She was a sales rep for a Colorado-based company trying to push hemp and CBD products in Texas. But customers were apprehensive. “No one wanted to touch [CBD]. No one wanted to talk about it. No one was interested in carrying this product in any sort of spa or retail space,” Kerver said. Today, the market for CBD, or cannabidiol, is exploding. Stores are popping up across the state selling tinctures and topicals. It’s being mixed into smoothies and coffee at cafes. Spas are

The two originally intended to operate the business
exclusively online but decided to open a brick-andmortar location in Austin after having difficulty with several online payment companies, from momand-pop merchants to giants like PayPal, that didn’t want anything to do with cannabis. “We were a business, but it wasn’t as functional as it could’ve been until the [Texas] law passed,” Sydney Torabi said. The Torabis started with a pop-up store and expanded to a permanent location last April, a month before Texas law changed. “We were operating in a gray area until the Texas bill passed,” Sydney said. “It did take away a little bit of the stigma. Like, ‘OK, now it’s legal in Texas. We can go to a CBD shop and not feel like we’re doing something bad.’

Sometime just after 3:00 am a fire broke out at Lakeview Apartments on beautiful Lake Holbrook. My wife woke me up saying someone was banging on our doors. I got out of bed and put my robe on to assess the situation and when I looked out our patio door to my right I saw flames raging out of control and I went back in to grab my wife who was grabbing precious family pictures. Michale (my wife) and Kim ( My Bonus Daughter) had prayed that the fire would stop at a pre-determined spot and glory to GOD, the fire department got the flames under control at that exact spot. We h a d n o r e a l smoke damager, h o w e v er the smoke s m e l l s t i l l l i n gers even after two weeks. As I write this on July 12, 2021, My Land Lord Johnny Wilson and I both concur it is our opinion that the fire was started by fireworks. We s t i l l a w a i t the fire investigators final report but I would be shocked if the fire weren’t attributed to fireworks. My wife would like to thank all the first responders who put their life in great peril to make sure the residents of the apartment were safe. I also want to thank Red Cross who helped all of my displaced neighbors. I also want to
thank all of the neighbors and former neighbors who came and offered compassion and care in the hours after the fire. This is why I don’t condone fireworks and I like to leave fireworks to the professionals. Just one spark can start a fire that will ruin s o m e o n e ’s life, or worse yet, take a life. Dear Dave, I have a question about self-banking with whole term life insurance. The way I understand it, you can accrue a cash balance, borrow against it, and then pay interest to yourself. Is this worth it, or should I stay away from it and continue using a bank? Kunal Dear Kunal, Actually, it’s a whole life policy, not a term policy. And it’s an absolute scam. Basically, with whole life you pay about 20 times more for the same amount of insurance that
you would with a term policy. The extra money goes into a savings account, and you earn next to nothing on it, even after you finally start to build it up. One of the ways they’re pitching it now is the self-banking concept, where you can use your own money. It’s nothing magical or anything, because with a regular checking account you use your own money. My advice is to stay away from the company that’s offering it and anything else they have. It’s a really bad product, and it’s a scummy way to sell whole life insurance—which is an awful product to begin with. No one, except for folks in that business, believes in it or talks positively about it anymore. Being able to borrow your own money? Really? Why on earth would anyone want to borrow their own money? the point of putting your family in financial danger. To the best of my knowledge, the Bible only addresses the topic of tithing by individuals—not businesses. Personally, I don’t give a tenth of my business gross or net until I receive my paycheck.
