Dallas Arboretum Is Having "Dollar Days" during August
Gardens are magical places that make us feel like all our problems have faded away. The Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden is an amazing place to spend the day and does just that. They have cafes, picnic areas, and a breathtaking view of White Rock Lake. Sometimes, however, it can get a little pricey to take a little walk around the gorgeous garden. Thankfully for the month of August, the Botanical Garden is offering $2 admission for their visitors. During this time, parking will only be $5 and entry to the Rory Meyers Children’s Adventure Garden will only be $2, which, trust us, is not only fun for the kids. Visitors are more than welcome to bring their own snacks and treats for a picnic but there will be food deals during the month as well. Terrace Café will offer $1 juice, sodas, and frozen treats. They will also have $4 brownie sundaes and $2 rootbeer floats. The normal entrance fee at the Botanical Garden can get up to $17 for adults, depending on the time of the year, and parking is normally $15
year-round. Visitors will be able to see everything the Arboretum has to offer including access to all the amazing hidden statues, displays, and their cafes. The cafe has free daily tastings and the pavilion has an outlook view of the lake that is perfect for picture taking and relaxation. The garden is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day of the week. Van ISD is hosting a Summer Food Program for children ages 1-18 that live within Van School District. The City of Van Community Library is hosting one of the feeding sites at the City of Van Community Center / Library from 11 am to 12 pm each Monday – Thursday beginning July 8, 2019 – August 8, 2019. Also beginning Wednesday July 10, 2019 and every Wednesday through the month of July from 10 am – 11 am the City of Van Community Library will be hosting its annual Summer Reading
program. The Summer Reading program is free to all that attend, thanks to donations and volunteers. There will crafts, snacks, and special guest. We encourage kids of all ages to attend. There will be a back to school clothing give away. The clothing give away will be Saturday August Third. The event will be from 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM. The event will be held at First Baptist Church of Van. There will be clothing and shoes for school age children from pre K

Dear Dave, When it comes to buying life insurance, should the coverage amount be based solely on current earnings? I have good reason to believe my income is going to increase significantly soon. Wesley Dear Wesley, The purpose of life insurance is to take care of your family if something unexpected happens to you. You don’t want to buy too much, but you should have enough to ensure that they’re well taken care of when you’re not here any longer. I usually recommend people have 10 to 12 times their annual income in a good, level term life insurance policy. However, if you have a solid reason to believe your income will be jumping significantly soon, there’s nothing wrong with basing your coverage amount on that figure—if you can afford it, of course. Understand that when I say, “solid reason,” I’m not talking about a hopeful attitude. I’m talking about something along the lines of finishing a medical
residency, then making the jump to a six-figure income. That’s the kind of logical thinking and planning I’m working with here. In that scenario, or something similar, a huge jump in income is virtually assured. You need to make sure your family is taken care of in the very best way possible, no matter how you die. You don’t want to suddenly lose coverage if you change jobs, or have to leave your place of work because you’re diagnosed with a major medical condition. MAVIS JAMES Mavis James, 53, of Grand Saline, passed away July 23, 2019, in Dallas. She was born September 23, 1965, in Dallas. She lived most of her life in Grand Saline and was a member of Round Flat Pentecostal Church. She loved her grandchildren, who called her "Gammy" and she enjoyed "dumpster diving", tinkering with found treasures and playing "Food Street" on her phone. She was preceded in death by her "DadDad", Glenn Beall. Survivors include her mother, Barbara Zink; grandmother "Granny", Elaine Beall; three
daughters, Tiffany Simpson and husband David Hagopian, Amber Simpson and Shauna Thomas; eight grandchildren, Gage Robinson, Jaden Moore, Damian Herring, Juniper Simpson, Atticus Hagopian, Leslie Gipson, Ivy Hagopian, Ezra Simpson; and numerous other relatives and friends. The family will plan services for a later date. Rev. Danny Boles officiating under the direction of Bartley Funeral Home, Grand Saline. Interment will follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Cooper, TX. Mr. Cockrum passed away August 4, 2019, at his home. He was born July 4, 1940 in Cooper to William Cullen & Orval Lee Nelson Cockrum. He spent his early years in Cooper, moved to Dallas where he spent most of his life before moving to Fruitvale in 1997. He was a member of Roundflat Pentecostal Church and was a truck driver. Billy is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Francis Stratton; and brother-in-law, Joe Wakefield. Survivors include his wife of 24 years, Raylene Cockrum of Fruitvale; daughter, Vickie Cockrum of Cooper; stepchildren, Jennifer Boles of Dallas and Jason Boles of Fruitvale; brother, Dan Cockrum of Canton; two sisters, Ann Wakefield of Tyler and Mary Bandy and husband James "Terry" of North Richland Hills; five grandchildren, Taylor Watkins, Stacie Latinis, Gary Latinis, Paige Costilla and Skylar Boles; five great-grandchildren, Jeremiah, Raigan, Austin, Madison and Jaden; and numerous other relatives and friends. The family will receive friends 1 p.m., Thursday, at Roundflat Pentecostal Church
