We asked, If elected what will you do to help stem the tidw of sex trafficking in East Texas?We can not ignore the facts. 25 million people are enslaved worldwide. 234,000 victims of labor trafficking in Texas, and 79,000 victims of youth sex trafficking in Texas. Attorney General Paxton formed the Human Trafficking and Transnational/ Organized Crime Section (HTTOC), tasked
with combating human trafficking across our state. There are four major types of human trafficking. Adult sex trafficking, adult labor trafficking, child sex trafficking, and child labor trafficking. There is no “look” for a trafficker. The scariest part is that it doesn’t always take force, fraud, or coercion. Children will be children. Traffickers know how to establish
relationships and take advantage of vulnerability. It is vital that we are aware of the warning signs and educate ourselves on what to do if put in a dangerous situation. Parents need to be aware of the applications their children use on their smartphones. Parents need to talk to their children about the importance of knowing their surroundings. Adults need to know the red flags. Below are a few offered by the Texas Attorney General: There are several red flags that someone is being forced into labor trafficking, including: Third-party control of schedule and social interaction Evidence of violence: bruises, swelling, scarring, etc. Works excessively long or unusual hours Living where the individual works Living in an area that is not zoned for residential Transported to and from work by employer Housing, food, and hy-
giene products all being supplied by the employer Not being paid on a regular schedule Recruited through false promises related to citizenship or working conditions Inability to speak English Identification documents or money are being held by a third-party Malnutrition, dehydration, exhaustion Untreated disease or dental and/or vision problems Chronic pain — e.g., back pain, muscle strains, respiratory issues, etc. Children can be victims of sex trafficking. Important red flags to look for include: Changes in school attendance, habits, friend groups, vocabulary, demeanor, and attitude Sudden appearance of luxury items — e.g., manicures, designer clothes, purses Truancy (absence) from school Sexually provocative clothing Tattoos or branding Refillable gift cards Multiple phones or social media accounts Lying about the exis-
tence of social media accounts Provocative pictures posted online or stored on the phone Unexplained injuriesSocial interaction and schedule being strictly controlled by someone else Isolation from family, friends, and community Red Flags for Adult Sex Trafficking Important red flags to look for: Contents of the vehicle/location Hotel receipts Drugstore receipts Lingerie Condoms, Female personal hygiene items in a place of business High-end clothing recently purchased, Hotel keys, Rolls of money Prepaid credit cards, Tattooing/branding, Lack of eye contact, Bruises, swelling, and/ or redness Third-party control of the person’s schedule, identifying documents, money, and/or travel. Sex ads linked to the individual’s phone number. Red Flags for Illicit Massage Parlors/Spas Permit or license for something other than actual business Male clientele
Location may have a guarded entrance Open at unusual hours compared to the businesses on either side Cameras both inside and outside Location storefront may be curtained off/ blocked, etc. Location may be locked and opened only when someone at the door with a phone “Employees” may be ferried to and from work by the “spa” or may live at the location Men walking through the parking lot, seem to be confused, and/ or talking on their cell phones Condoms in the parking lot, drains, or pipes. Be sure to share all actionable information you have — including descriptions of cars and people, when and where you saw the conduct, and take a picture if you can safely do so. you’re debt-free except for your home. You can’t tighten up your budget enough to save up an emergency fund? Stay out of restaurants, dude! There’s no law stating you have to eat out a lot just because there are kids in the house. I mean, you’ve got no emergency fund. That’s a pretty basic thing. You guys need to get on a written, detailed plan, and start hitting your goals. I’m talking about a strict, monthly budget. Now, I’ll admit your mortgage payment isn’t exactly what I would’ve signed you

up for. Your house payments, or rent, should be no more than 25 percent of your monthly take home pay. But your house payment isn’t what’s holding you two back. What’s holding you two back is the fact that you haven’t been willing to tighten up the finances in other areas of your life to offset biting off more than you could chew in terms of a home. No, I wouldn’t refinance. You’re fairly close where the mortgage payments are concerned, so I think you can make it through this by looking at ways
to increase your income and selling stuff you don’t need to build an emergency fund. lthough rare cancers don’t occur often, they can affect people of all ages and genders. A rare cancer is defined as fewer than 15 new diagnoses per 100,000 people per year, according to the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Additionally, as noted by the American Cancer Society (ACS), the 5-year survival rate is lower for people diagnosed with a rare cancer than for people living with more common cancers. Greater awareness of rare cancers may lead to earlier diagnosis and management, and potentially better survival rates. 1. There are more than 50 types of soft tissue sarcomas (STS). STS account for about 1% of all cancers and affect soft tissues such as muscle, fat, nerves, blood vessels and skin. Although STS can be found in any part of the body, they are often in the arms or legs, internal organs, the back of the abdominal cavity or in the trunk, head and neck area. If you have recently been diagnosed with STS, it’s important to ask your doctor for more information about the specific sub-type you have. For example, if you received a diagnosis of undifferentiated sarcoma, ask your doctor for an integrase interactor-1 (INI1) test to see if you have a rare STS called epithelioid sarcoma (ES). (See sidebar for more on ES.) 2. STS can be visible or invisible depending on location. STS may appear as painless bumps under the skin, usually on arms or legs. Some sarcomas begin in the abdomen and typically don’t show symptoms until they grow and press on nearby organs, nerves, muscles or blood vessels. When this occurs, symptoms may include pain and trouble breathing.

Learning More About Epithelioid Sarcoma A rare type of STS, epithelioid sarcoma (ES) accounts for less than 1% of all STS, which themselves account for approximately 1% of all cancers, according to research published in “Archives of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine.” ES can present as a lump or sore on the skin. Notably, more than 90% of ES tumors do not express the INI1 protein, which when present acts to suppress tumor growth. INI1
loss plays an important role in the diagnosis of ES, according to researchers with “The American Journal of Surgical Pathology.” Data from the NCI indicates that approximately 150-200 people in the United States are diagnosed with ES each year. Research published in “The Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology” found the disease often occurs in young adults in their 20s and 30s. Because most ES
patients are adolescents and young adults, there is a gap in the unique psycho-social needs for this patient population, including resources for patients who miss school while undergoing treatments, as well as fertility considerations later in life. 3. Early diagnosis can help inform disease management. As with other types of cancer, early diagnosis of STS is key, as earlier treatment may result in more favorable outcomes. Because other conditions can cause similar symptoms, it’s important to check with your doctor if you are experiencing any of the warning signs listed above. If your doctor decides it’s best to “watch and wait,” consider developing a six-week follow-up plan in partnership with your health care team if your symptoms have not improved. 4. Seeking care from a specialist is key. Given the rarity of STS, finding a sarcoma
specialist who understands the complexity of this rare disease and can help determine which treatment option is best for you is important. Treatment options depend on multiple factors, including your overall health, the location and type of tumor, its size and whether the disease has spread elsewhere in the body. STS are typically treated with a combination of options including chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery. How to Help Your Teens Reach Their Goals in 2020 By Anthony ONeal
I don’t know about y’all, but I am ready to crush some goals this year! Maybe you don’t feel so ready, and that’s okay. Maybe you’re ready, but you’re worried your high schooler isn’t. Don’t stress. No matter where you find yourself at the beginning of the year, it’s never too late to get on track and set yourself (and your teen) up for success. The most important thing you and your teen need to do is: Have. A. Plan. Here’s how I break down the goal-setting process in a way that not only helps me plan for the whole year, but also helps me create positive change in myself that lasts way after I’ve hit my goals. • The Vision Before there can be a goal, there has to be a big-picture vision. Encourage your teen to think about what kind of person they want to become and what they want to achieve as they learn and grow in their lifetime. Thinking through these things will give your teen the why behind their goals. Their why will really keep them motivated! ¶ The Goals Goals are what we set in order to help us work toward the vision. All goals should be SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-sensitive. For example, “save money for college” is vague, but “save $1,000 by graduation” is specific. It’s driven by a deadline and makes sense for your teen. • The Habits Help your teen build some smaller, consistent habits that help them achieve their goals. A habit for the example above could be setting aside a certain amount of money from each paycheck. That way, once they reach their goal, they’ve already formed a pattern that will help them stick with their smart choices over time. Boom! Now it’s time to start putting the goal-setting process into action! If you have a student in the family, chances are that college––or at least thinking about college–– is somewhere in their near future. If they’re interested in going to college (without student loans), here are a few examples of goals they could set for this year
that will help them get ready for that big step. • 9th graders should: Get solid grades by having healthy study habits and turning assignments in on time. Research three colleges that fit with the careers that interest them. Meet with their guidance counselor at least twice (this goes for all four years of high school). • 10th graders should: Consider getting a tutor or taking a prep class for the ACT or SAT tests. Research job shadowing or internship opportunities. Research scholarships every day. • 11th graders should: Take the ACT or SAT multiple times to boost their score. Make a list (resumé) of their grades, awards, organizations, volunteer time, and clubs (colleges look at this stuff!). Spend at least an hour every day looking for scholarships. • 12th graders should: Apply to the top colleges on their list. Plan to visit their top three colleges before making a final choice. Look for scholarships every day and apply for as many as possible. Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)!
