For the 1st time in 170 years, the City of Canton has decided to cancel the upcoming First Monday Trade Days, April 2-5, 2020. The emergency proclamation was declared and signed this morning by Mayor Louann Everett. BACK IN THE DAY After the building was

he picture you see was taken on a Wednesday not too long ago. The picture in and of itself is of no great consequence. However, I think the building is a shining example of positive thinking. The. Way I see it, the building was constructed sometimes in the 1920s or 1930s at the latest. Somebody had the vision to plan to erect what was probably a good place to get gas and probably a quick meal. The location is on Highway 80 between Grand Saline and Mineola. As I’ve pointed out before Highway 80 was this country’s first coast to coast highway. Somewhere along the way an enterprising fellow got the idea that would be a great spot for a business. So, he had plans drawn up and spent money on wood, bricks and all things needed for such a grand building.

By the time the depression came and went, the business went through some storms but still survived fairly solvent. When the big one , World War two hit it slowed down our business. remember gas was rationed as well as many
other items were hard to get. After that war ended the soldiers known as baby boomers headed home to live the good life of the 1950s in the good old USA. So, what finally did the little business in? During World War Two President Eisenhower then General Eisenhower saw the German Autobahn and it inspired him to create today’s highly developed highways we call the interstate system. Dear Dave, Should you still pay debts that are in collections, even if they have been dropped from your credit report? The one in question is from 2011, and I assume it isn’t showing on the credit report anymore because it’s nine years old. Sam Dear Sam, There are two good reasons to go back and deal with this debt. One, even if it’s off your credit report, you may still legally owe the money. Even if the statute of limitations has run its course, things like this have a habit of popping up and causing problems at the worst possible times. About the time you decide to buy a home, this is liable to raise its head again and mess things up. So, the fact that something doesn’t appear on a credit report doesn’t mean you’re not legally liable, or that they won’t bother
you about it later. The second thing to think about is a simple matter of fact—you owe the money. Regardless of what the legal system or credit report says, you morally owe the money. I’d contact the creditor, and begins negotiations to settle the debt. You might be able to reach an agreement where they’d accept less than the original amount owed. Regardless, get any type of settlement offer in writing. Sign the forms, and let them take the money out. Keep an eye on your HSA balance, though, and make sure they take out only amount they overpaid— not one penny more or less. Keep it simple, Ellie. You didn’t earn this money, and it wasn’t expected or agreed upon. It was a mistake, so just do the right thing. On Tuesday, Abbott said FEMA would soon conduct testing in Texas, in addition to current testing being done by hospitals, public health authorities and private operators. He did not specify how FEMA would conduct these tests. How much does it cost? The tests conducted by state labs are free, but that’s not necessarily the case with tests conducted by private labs. Last week, Abbott asked state-regulated insurance plans to waive the costs of testing for the new coronavirus. Nearly all of them agreed to do this, but uninsured Texans can still be billed for the cost of treatment, such as a hospital visit or physician’s fees. On Wednesday, a private clinic in Houston said it’s charging $150 to test people for the new coronavirus at its drivethrough testing site. State officials have encouraged Texans to call 2-1-1 to find nearby free or reduced-cost clinics. The U.S. House passed
legislation that will allocate money for free coronavirus testing, expand sick-leave provisions and bolster funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. The bill, passed Monday, is headed to the U.S. Senate for a vote in the coming days.
