Early voting is underway in Texas. Here's what you need to know. BY ALLYSON ORTEGON FEB. 18, 2020 12 AM Early voting starts Tuesday in Texas, with polls opening up across the state for voters to cast their ballots in the March primary. Early voting will last for 10 days, ending Feb. 28. For Texans who don’t want to cast their ballots early, the state’s primary election day is March 3. Texas is one of 14 states participating in the Super Tuesday primary. This year’s primary ballot includes much more than just the presidential primary, which is sure to be a top draw for Democratic voters.
Voters can cast ballots in either the Democratic or Republican primary, or go to third-party conventions later this year. Voters will weigh in on congressional, legislative, judicial and State Board of Education primaries. There are hundreds of candidates vying for positions across the state, so check out
The Texas Tribune’s primary election ballot guide for more. If a primary race ends in a runoff, the runoff election is on May 25, when voters will choose between the top two vote-getters. But in order to cast a vote at the polls, voters will need to be eligi-

ble and know where to go. The Tribune’s voter guide tells you how to find polling places nearby, what you need to take to the polls and answers to some quick questions. Important things to note: Voters need to take some form of ID, the last day to apply for a ballot by mail is Feb. 21, and wearing campaign gear at the polls is illegal. Here are some other resources before you vote: A long list of Democrats are running to challenge U.S. Sen. John Cornyn in November. We asked the top candidates 11 questions about their policy and politics stances to help differentiate them for Texas voters. The Tribune’s CEO and co-founder Evan Smith also sat down for hourlong conversations with those same candidates. Watch those interviews here. We have highlighted some of the most competitive and interesting races here. Add key 2020 election dates to your calendar here. “Early voting is underway in Texas. SHOPPING NEWS J.R. SIMPSON
Art and the kid
I know it’s hard to believe, but I too was once a kid. Growing up in Metairie, a suburb of New Orleans, I had access to some of the greatest symphonic and jazz known to man. My mother and sister how I envied them. Beautiful penmanship and what fabulous artists they were and are. My mom passed away quite a few years ago, but my little sister, yeah, even though she retired as a high school teacher but what a fantastic artist she is and best of all she was able to combine the music and art of New Orleans and believe me it is glorious and you can see some of her handy work at https://pattymcgehee-jukejointjunkie.blogspot.com/ As for me and art. I tried to draw hot rods and design subdivisions but I’ll never forget how crushed I was when a art teacher I had pleaded with our principal Mr. Russell not to let me take art again next school year. As a kid I even watched John Gnagy to see if I could paint by number, but alas and alac, had no art skills. Later on I found out I was partially color blind between blues and greens. Maybe that is partially what was wrong with me. However on we also found out I had no
hand eye cordination.I still Never the less I still ap preciate the fact that in grade school we went to the New Orleans Philharmonic every six weeks. and I even went on dates to the Delgado Museum of art in City Park. Delgado is now named New Orleans Museum of art and that is a bone of contention for another time and place. No, I never became an accomplished artist like my mother, or my sister, however I did teach my self some graphic design and started my first of two publications in 1995. Our first publication was the Sunny Shopper and our current publication Lone Star Shopper has been going strong since July of 2007. I guess I say all of this to parents who may be reading this. If you have a budding, or even a not so budding artist in your family, encourage him or her to keep trying to become the next Picasso, or Rembrandt. If they show an interest in a musical instrument encourage that. Remember, tomorrow’s artists artists will come from today’s students. Thank you for reading the Lone Star Shopper. Have a great week and remember, I’m pullin; for ya!

Think Of It As Murphy Insurance
THERE’S A BETTER WAY!
Dear Dave, My husband and I had our first child in December. We bought a house not long before the baby was born, and since then we’ve been getting mail and phone calls about buying mortgage protection insurance. We’re both 27, we have good jobs, and our mortgage is $105,000. Would it be a good idea to get this insurance? Rachel Dear Rachel, Mortgage insurance
is really nothing more than a life insurance policy with the word “mortgage” stuck on the front. They make it sound like a specialized product, and they jack the price up. The truth is it’s just a big rip-off in most cases. If you two are healthy, you both could easily get $250,000 on 20-year level term life insurance policies, for around $12 a month. Then, if something happened to one of you, the other could pay off the house with
the insurance money and still have a nice chunk left over. However, I recommend going a little further. My advice is for each of you to get good, level term life insurance—not just to cover your mortgage—but for 10 to 12 times your annual incomes. Both of you should have sensible plans in place to take care of your family now, and in the future, should something unfortunate happen. And Congratulations! God bless you two and your new baby! —Dave
Dear Dave, I was thinking about putting my emergency fund savings into a balanced mutual fund. Would this be a good idea? Trey Dear Trey, You should never put your emergency fund into anything that can go down in value, or anything that charges penalties for early withdrawals. I recommend putting it into a good money market account with check-writing privileges. Remember, your emergency fund is insurance. It is not an investment. That three to six months of expenses you’ve saved has one purpose and one purpose only—to protect you, your family, and your stuff against the unexpected. You know how Murphy’s Law says anything that can go wrong will go wrong? Think of your emergency fund as Murphy repellant. That’s one of the reasons
an emergency fund is so important. If you don’t have one, and something unexpected happens, you’re likely to end up borrowing money from the bank, or cashing out retirement savings to fix things. So, don’t worry about investing this money. Just park it, and think of it as an insurance policy for when Murphy comes knocking at the door! —Dave

4 Ways to Use Your Tax Refund to Get Ahead By Chris Hogan
D
www.lsshopper.com • 903-865-7002
MARCH 4, 2020
id you know that March is Asset Management Awareness Month? Let me put that for you in plain English: Asset is a fancy word for your stuff, and management means taking control of your stuff. Here’s a practical opportunity to try asset management: What should you do with your tax refund this year? Let’s look at four ways to make the most of it. Adjust your withholdings Sure, it’s fun to get a big chunk of change all at once, but tax refunds don’t come from Santa Claus! A refund means that you’ve been overpaying the government all year. If you’re getting a big tax refund, I want you to adjust your withholdings in the coming year. You could have been using that money, saving it on your own, or investing it all year long! Talk with a tax advisor about how you can have a bigger paycheck and stop giving the gov-
ernment an interest-free loan. Pay off debt Debt is a thief. It will steal your ability to build wealth—and your peace of mind too. If you have consumer debt from credit cards, big purchases, or student loans, I want you to attack it with all the energy you have. So, why not use your tax refund? If you don’t have any consumer debt but you do have a mortgage, then throw this money toward the mortgage. Move yourself one step closer to total debt freedom. Invest it If you’re out of debt, and you’ve built up an emergency fund that can cover three to six months of living expenses, you need to invest 15% of your gross income in retirement. You can just sweep that tax refund into an investment fund or your Roth IRA. And if you don’t have a Roth IRA, now’s a great time to get one!
Splurge a little It’s okay to have fun with the extra cash, as long as you’re debt-free with that emergency fund in place. If you’re married, y o u could use your tax ref u n d to go out for a special date night. Or maybe you could buy tickets to an event for your whole family. Take time to pause, breathe in, and enjoy the people in your life! Your refund is an opportunity to make a great financial decision, not just a good one. And remember: Progress doesn’t happen by accident. It’s not the big, one-time choices that will determine your financial future. It’s the habits you form and live out every day!
