QUITMAN ISD NEWS 2020 GRADUATION PLANS ANNOUNCED
F
rom A press release on social media Quitman Principal has announced Quitman High School’s graduating seniors WILL have the opportunity to walk across the stage and accept your diplomas this year; it will just look a little different. QISD has contracted the services of Chad Parish of Creative Edge Photography to create a virtual graduation which will be aired “live” on the original graduation date of Friday, May 22, 2020, via QISD’s newly created YouTube channel. Here’s how it’s going
LON E STAR SH O PP ER
From The Free State Of Van Zandt...
to work: On May 11 or 12, each senior and up to 4 family members will have a scheduled time to report to Bud Moody Stadium in cap and gown, where you will walk across the stage to receive your diploma, have 2-3 still photos taken and record a graduate video. Students who have been chosen for speaking parts will also record their speeches, and all parts of the graduation ceremony will be pre-recorded. Creative Edge will then edit the video into a full traditional graduation ceremony. The full video
GOOD GOSH! CALL JOSH! 903-865-7002
will be uploaded to our QISD YouTube channel (more on that later), and graduates and families will be able to tune in to their graduation together at the scheduled time of 7:00 PM on May 22, 2020. Parents will have the opportunity to purchase graduation photos after the event from Creative Edge Photography’s website. Graduates will receive a list of upcoming dates and deadlines for events that we are preparing for our graduates, as well as a scheduled time for each individual graduate to report to Bud Moody Stadium. This information will be mailed to each graduate by Thursday, April 23. A copy will also be sent to each senior’s school email. This school year is unique and one that will never be forgotten. While nothing takes the place of an actual “live and in-person graduation,” we believe that this is the next best thing and hope that we can honor our seniors in a special and unforgettable way. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email the Quitman Principal at hamrickd@ quitmanisd.net.
ICE to stop most immigration enforcement inside United States, will focus on criminals during coronavirus outbreak
United States immigration authorities will temporarily halt enforcement across the country except for efforts to deport foreign nationals who have committed crimes or who pose a threat to public safety. The change in enforcement status comes amid the coronavirus outbreak and aims to limit the spread of the virus and to encourage those who need treatment to seek medical help. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said late Wednesday that its Enforcement and Removal Operations will “delay enforcement actions” and use “alternatives to detention” amid the outbreak, according to a notification the agency sent to Congress. ICE told members of Congress that its “highest priorities are to promote lifesaving and public safety activities.” “During the COVID-19 crisis, ICE will not carry
out enforcement operations at or near health care facilities, such as hospitals, doctors’ offices, accredited health clinics, and emergent or urgent care facilities, except in the most extraordinary of circumstances,” according to the notification. “Individuals should not avoid seeking medical care because they fear civil immigration enforcement.” The agency, which is a part of the Department of Homeland Security, did not immediately respond to questions about how many of the approximately 37,000 detainees it has in custody will remain there. Nearly 20,000 in ICE custody have some sort of criminal history, but it remained unclear how many of those people have serious criminal violations in their past. As of Tuesday, there
were no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in ICE detention facilities, but the agency had suspended visits to detainees and taken other steps to prevent the spread of the disease. Advocates for immigrants had filed at least one lawsuit and had clamored for officials to release the detainees, saying they were at risk of infection because they were being held in close quarters. Detainees in such facilities are mostly adults, but the detainee population also can include the elderly and families with children. ICE’s Homland Security Investigations agents will continue to investigate criminal activity such as child exploitation, gangs and drugs, according to the agency. DID YOU KNOW?
These Are The Times That Try Men’s Mental Health!
At the beginning of this year, you would not convince me that by the end of March many people would be very ill from a virus that nobody knows how it got started. Even worse, there are multitudes of theories, some logical and some not so much. These theories range from mild to wild. some make no sense and some well. these options make me want to go out and look for little green men. Suposedly these beings would visit us from other galaxies far, far away. I like the description of one post on Facebook that the storyline was now being written by a precocious fourth grader. I’m convinced life is being written by a 4th grader even now. “And there was this virus, and everyone was scared. And then the world ran out of toilet paper. And then there was no school for like a month and then time went backward and spring changed to winter, then it snowed!! And the world had to close until everyone felt better. So they told everyone they could smoke weed and they all lived happily ever after.” I know that sounds like a bad twilight zone episode but a lot of people are scratching their heads and are wonder-
ing, What’s Next? I don’t know what to think, but I do have a few suggestions for you. I know it sounds trite and trivial, but washing your hands in warm soapy water is best. Don’t forget to use ample amounts of sanitizer. What about social distancing. Keep your distance six to ten people apart is preferable. Don’t forget to avoid big groups. Speaking of big groups, grocery shopping is not a family affair. It’s time to install a rule. ONE TO A BUGGY! Another thing about this virus and your family’s needs don’t hoard. It’s just not a nice thing to do. It makes no sense to hoard. As tempting as it is to believe anything and everything on the internet, check your sources and don’t rush to conclusions. Listen to local media for important information about your locale.
Your city officials including your police and fire department are wonderful sources to find out what is happening in your neighborhood. Right above that is your County Judge and Commissioners. You can call your local County Courthouse for information. At the State Capitol Call them on the phone or email them and the internet is our friend. If you don’t have web access then ask to borrow a neighbors WI-FI, Keep tuned to a local news radio station and check with your local television stations several times a day. Local newspapers and online news sources may be great spots to look for information. During these trying times. I like to remind others, It’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice. Have patience and we truly will get through this in no time with a shrug of the shoulders and a hearty well I’m glad that’s over.

THOSE CONVINCED AGAINST THEIR WILL
Dear Dave, I’m debt-free except for my home, and it is all because I started following your plan four years ago. I’m even on track to pay off my mortgage in eight years. With all the scary economic news out there, I’d love to talk to my family about following your advice, too. Do you have any suggestions for doing this without sounding like a know-it-all or that I am bragging? Lacey
Dear Lacey, It’s been my experience that when it comes to family, words don’t always do the trick. There’s an old saying that goes, “Those convinced against their will are of the same opinion still.” Some people have been brainwashed into believing credit cards and debt are an unavoidable part of life. They’re stuck in their ways, and nothing anyone can say or do is going to change that.
Page 5
www.lsshopper.com • 903-865-7002 I’ve been fortunate enough to help millions of people change their lives, get out of debt, and take control of their finances. But there are millions more who will never listen. They’ll just keep going deeper and deeper into debt, and never realize the real problem is the person they see in the mirror every morning. The truth is, you can make irrefutable arguments against credit cards. People who use them spend more than those who use cash or debit cards. Research has proven this. You don’t need one to rent a car, get a hotel room, or buy airline tickets. A debit card will do all those things without piling up debt. For an emergency fund, you can simply save up cash. It takes some discipline and hard work, but relying on credit when things go wrong is a really bad idea. It’s a trap. If they won’t listen to all these truths, try telling them your story. Let them know you understand from experience how hard breaking old habits can be. Emphasize how amazing your life has been since you made the decision to actively control your money, instead allowing a lack of money to control you. Congratulations, Lacey. I’m proud of you for working so hard and being disciplined. I hope you can be an influence on others in your family, and help lead them to a place of financial peace, too! — Dave

These Texas organizations are helping people during the pandemic — and here's how you can, too By Megan Menchaca
March 23, 2020
With schools closed and thousands of people across the country being laid off due to the new coronavirus pandemic, many Texans are finding themselves stuck at home with no income or access to necessary resources like food or medical supplies. In response to growing concerns around the nation, President Donald Trump recently signed a bill mandating 12 weeks of paid leave for people quarantining or experiencing COVID-19 symptoms that applies only to companies with less than 500 employees. The federal bill, which goes into effect Thursday, also provides $1 billion in emergency unemployment insurance to the states and requires free testing for the new coronavirus. \In Texas, the economic damage is amplified as local businesses are shuttered, the service industry is halted, and the oil and gas industry is hammered. But as state and federal leaders continue to respond, what can you do if you’re looking for assistance? And if you have the means to do so, what can you do to help others? Food banks, school districts and some local pantries are providing free meals for people and asking for donations and volunteers as they face a significant increase in demand. Texans also have access to a variety of other resources, including free internet and housing support. Here’s a list. Food near me: How can I get meals? Texans who meet certain income eligibility guidelines can apply for various federal benefit programs. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program provides money for food, and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children provides resources for pregnant women and people with children younger than 5. Feeding Texas has a website where people can find 21 member food banks that can provide free groceries and a place to sign up for SNAP benefits. The organization is also asking for donations for the COVID-19 Emergency Response Fund, and local organizations are looking for volunteers, food donations and monetary donations. Local chapters of the Salvation Army in Texas are also offering a variety of services, including shelter, addiction services and curbside pickup for groceries. Texans can donate directly to the Salvation Army Texas on its website
or to their local chapters, which can be found here. The Meals on Wheels Texas website allows Texans to search for local Meals on Wheels chapters that are providing meals to elderly individuals that can be picked up or home delivered. Local chapters are also looking for volunteers and certain items to be donated. Specific needs can be found on the local chapters’ websites. Little Free Pantry is a nationwide network of local pantries providing food and resources to people experiencing food insecurity. Texans can find a map of pantries in their area here or list their own pantry if they would like to start one. The Texas Education Agency launched the Texas Students MealFinder Map with a list of local education agency facilities serving meals in their communities. The map includes the address of each facility and dates and times meals will be served.
