QUITMAN ISD NEWS 2020 GRADUATION PLANS ANNOUNCED
F
rom A press release on social media Quitman Principal has announced Quitman High School’s graduating seniors WILL have the opportunity to walk across the stage and accept your diplomas this year; it will just look a little different. QISD has contracted the services of Chad Parish of Creative Edge Photography to create a virtual graduation which will be aired “live” on the original graduation date of Friday, May 22, 2020, via QISD’s newly created YouTube channel. Here’s how it’s going

to work: On May 11 or 12, each senior and up to 4 family members will have a scheduled time to report to Bud Moody Stadium in cap and gown, where you will walk across the stage to receive your diploma, have 2-3 still photos taken and record a graduate video. Students who have been chosen for speaking parts will also record their speeches, and all parts of the graduation ceremony will be pre-recorded. Creative Edge will then edit the video into a full traditional graduation ceremony. The full video

will be uploaded to our QISD YouTube channel (more on that later), and graduates and families will be able to tune in to their graduation together at the scheduled time of 7:00 PM on May 22, 2020. Parents will have the opportunity to purchase graduation photos after the event from Creative Edge Photography’s website. Graduates will receive a list of upcoming dates and deadlines for events that we are preparing for our graduates, as well as a scheduled time for each individual graduate to report to Bud Moody Stadium. This information will be mailed to each graduate by Thursday, April 23. A copy will also be sent to each senior’s school email. This school year is unique and one that will never be forgotten. While nothing takes the place of an actual “live and in-person graduation,” we believe that this is the next best thing and hope that we can honor our seniors in a special and unforgettable way. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email the Quitman Principal at hamrickd@ quitmanisd.net.
ICE to stop most immigration enforcement inside United States, will focus on criminals during coronavirus outbreak
United States immigration authorities will temporarily halt enforcement across the country except for efforts to deport foreign nationals who have committed crimes or who pose a threat to public safety. The change in enforcement status comes amid the coronavirus outbreak and aims to limit the spread of the virus and to encourage those who need treatment to seek medical help. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said late Wednesday that its Enforcement and Removal Operations will “delay enforcement actions” and use “alternatives to detention” amid the outbreak, according to a notification the agency sent to Congress. ICE told members of Congress that its “highest priorities are to promote lifesaving and public safety activities.” “During the COVID-19 crisis, ICE will not carry
out enforcement operations at or near health care facilities, such as hospitals, doctors’ offices, accredited health clinics, and emergent or urgent care facilities, except in the most extraordinary of circumstances,” according to the notification. “Individuals should not avoid seeking medical care because they fear civil immigration enforcement.” The agency, which is a part of the Department of Homeland Security, did not immediately respond to questions about how many of the approximately 37,000 detainees it has in custody will remain there. Nearly 20,000 in ICE custody have some sort of criminal history, but it remained unclear how many of those people have serious criminal violations in their past. As of Tuesday, there
were no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in ICE detention facilities, but the agency had suspended visits to detainees and taken other steps to prevent the spread of the disease. Advocates for immigrants had filed at least one lawsuit and had clamored for officials to release the detainees, saying they were at risk of infection because they were being held in close quarters. Detainees in such facilities are mostly adults, but the detainee population also can include the elderly and families with children. ICE’s Homland Security Investigations agents will continue to investigate criminal activity such as child exploitation, gangs and drugs, according to the agency.
