Governor Abbott and Attorney General Pax ton Provide Joint Guid ance for Houses of Wor ship Operating as Essential Services

G

overnor Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton have issued joint guidance regarding the effect of Executive Order GA 14 on religious services conducted in congregations and

houses of worship. The Executive Order GA 14 denies essential services to include “religious services conducted in churches, congregations, and houses of worship.” Orders given by state or local govern-

ments prohibiting people from providing or obtaining certain services must ensure that the orders do not violate the First Amendment of the United States Constitution, Article I of the Texas Constitution, and the Texas Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which protect the rights of Texans to freely exercise their religion.

UIL Announces Extended Suspension of All UIL Activities

AUSTIN — The University Interscholastic League (UIL) is extending its suspension of all UIL sanctioned activities due to the outbreak of COVID-19 in Texas. All contests, practices, rehearsals and workouts will remain suspended until further notice. At this time, the earliest games and contests may resume is Monday, May 4th. Prior to this date, the UIL will allow its member schools a reasonable acclimatization period for rehearsals and practices to occur. All decisions remain flexible and will be consistent with the advice of local, state and federal officials. The UIL Press release went on to say, “We

are working diligently on contingency plans to conduct state championships in each of the activities that have been suspended,” said UIL Executive Director Dr. Charles Breithaupt. “While the immediate future is unclear, we are committed to providing these much-desired activities to all Texas students and will prepare for all possible outcomes, including extended school closures.” The UIL will continue to provide timely, ongoing updates and is reassessing this ever-changing situation daily. Please continue to check the UIL website and social media accounts for further updates.

Beware of COVID 19 SCAMS

From Edgewood TX Police Department, Due to the ongoing circumstances COVID-19 and the school and business closures, we want to remind everyone to stay vigilant. We are seeing instances in other towns that people are going door to door “selling products/services.” As of this time with our city departments closed to the public, we will be suspending issuing any permits for people to sell their products/services door to door. With this being said, if you as a citizen have this happen at your house or a place of business within our city, please do not hesitate in notifying the police department. We will respond immediately as we want to keep our residents safe. The phone number to the Police department is: 903-8964100. During evening hours it will be forwarded to the sheriff’s dept and the will notify us. Always remember in the event of an emergency call 911.

How to protect yourself in times of crisis By Chris Hogan

I

f you’re feeling panicked about money in these uncertain times, I want you to hear me on this: You are not alone. You will be okay.

People all across the country are wanting to know how the COVID-19 virus will affect their finances. Here are some of the top questions I’m getting about how to handle money during this trying time. What should I do to protect myself and my family right now? Conserve your fincial resources. This means cutting unnecessary spending, like cable television, eating out, and subscription memberships. Focus on taking care of the Four Walls. I’m talking about the absolute necessities— food, shelter, utilities, and transportation. Should I cash out my investments or take my money out of the bank? Absolutely not! The stock market is like a rollercoaster, and you don’t jump off a rollercoaster in the middle of the ride. If you pull your money out now, you’re guaranteed a loss. But if you ride it out, you can bet the value will eventually go back up. Plus, bank deposits are insured by the FDIC and protected up to at least $250,000. How long will this last? Honestly, I don’t

be okay! *Chris Hogan is a two-time #1 national best-selling author, financial expert and host of The Chris Hoknow. What I do gan Show. For more know is the economy than a decade, Hogan will recover. WHAT WOULD WILL ROGERS SAY?? Live in such a way that you would not be ashamed to sell your parrot to the town gossip.

IS IT AN EMERGENCY? Dear Dave, ment is coming, My husband and I just completed Baby Step 3, and we have six months of expenses saved for an emergency fund. How should we determine when something is actually an emergency? Riley Dear Riley, Congratulations on doing the work, being disciplined, and saving like crazy! Now you’ve got peace of mind, and a pile of cash, that will help turn an emergency into nothing more than an inconvenience. There’s no shame in using your emergency fund if you really need to. That’s what it’s there for. Just remember to ask yourself a few questions anytime something pops up to make sure you’ve got a real reason to use it. Is the expense really unexpected? Christmas happens on December 25th every single year. You know your semi-annual car insurance pay-

too. Make sure things like this are part of your regular, monthly budgets. Some examples of unexpected expenses might be a job loss or pay cut. Emergency medical expenses and car accident repairs might fall into this category, as well. Is it absolutely necessary? Most people say they know the difference between a want and a need, but that’s not always the case. Replacing your only mode of transportation would be a need. Upgrading to a newer, fancier car is not. If your car goes down for the count, you need transportation. Use your emergency fund to buy something affordable and reliable you can pay cash for. But don’t dip into it just to upgrade your decent car for one with a million bells and whistles. Is it urgent? Practice the art of patience whenever possible. If your home’s

air conditioning unit goes out in the middle of summer, that’s probably an urgent fix. But hearing about the “sale of the century” at your favorite retail store? Grabbing the newest, hottest cell phone when yours works just fine? Nope! Your emergency fund is all about long-term security, not instant gratification. Don’t blow it impulsively, but don’t be afraid to use it when it’s really needed. Be wise, and ask those three questions. Check yourself so you don’t wreck yourself—or your budget! —Dave * Dave Ramsey is CEO of Ramsey Solutions. He has authored seven best-selling books, including The Total Money Makeover. time when people are motivated to start fresh. With reorganization often top of mind, it is also a time when many homeowners look for ways to update their homes with improvements that can increase aesthetics and functionality. From small changes to large-scale projects, these home design ideas from the experts at Dutch Boy paints are all about adding fresh appeal to your living space. Reorganize and reimagine Sometimes a space doesn’t require much investment at all, you just need a change of perspective. Reorganizing a room for better flow and eliminating unnecessary clutter can give it a brand-new, updated feel. Consider how adjusting the furniture placement might improve the space, whether it opens up a better walkway or lets in more light. Upgrades are often about adding, but don’t be afraid to take away unnecessary furniture that crowds the space. Also give attention to organization and stash away items that make the room appear untidy or uninviting. Artwork overhaul Furniture and architectural elements may factor heavi-

details that tell a space’s true story. If you like the major features of a room but have grown bored with its overall look and feel, swapping out the artwork may be just the solution. One notable benefit of this approach is that artwork is available at virtually every price point, making it easy to stay within your budget. From DIY pieces to gallery-quality hangings, there are nearly countless ways to achieve the look you desire. Color correction and odor protection Changing the wall color is often a style-driven decision. However, when it comes to eliminating stains and odors, paint can also be a functional solution that saves on heavy-duty renovating. For example, Dutch Boy Forever Paint and Primer, available exclusively at Menards, covers old stains, prevents new ones and helps knock back the odors that are particularly pungent during the winter months when everyone is cooped up indoors. The paint features Arm & Hammer Odor Eliminating technology, making it ideal for high-traffic areas and homeowners with pets and kids. Sold in easy-to-use plastic twist-and-pour containers, it offers an easy-touse alternative to traditional metal cans. Learn more at DutchBoy.com.
