Did you know each insect is a host to ten bacterial species? • There are around 2 billion species on Earth—with 6.8 million likely to be species of insects. And up to 10 types of bacteria lives inside of each of these insects! • Dr Pepper was invented in Texas in 1885. Created by Charles Alderton in Waco, Dr Pepper was first nationally marketed in 1904 and is now sold all over the world. The recipe is a secret and is kept in two halves in safety deposit boxes located in two different Dallas banks.

ial ER t n H e S LI id c B c U A P By: Michael T. “Josh” Fuller
THE BEAT GOES ON OR ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK (EONS) With apologies to the 60’s rock group Vanilla Fudge, I got to thinking about how when it comes to parents worrying about kid’s latest dance crazes I wondered if today’s parent has more to worry about with the over sexuialization of dance. Let’s take a time trip in our musical way back machine. We will come back to current dance trends a little later in this article. The year, 1993 and a Latin Group Los Dio Rios made it to the top of the musical charts with a ditty called Macarena. The song spawned a dance that swept the nation. Not too much to see here, let’s move along. Back in the ’80s, there were a plethora of dances in the ’80s, the most popular was Michael Jackson’s Moonwalk. There was The Prep. The Wop. The Biz. The Cabbage Patch. The Snake. The Sprin-
kler. The Robocop. Gosh, outside of Jackson’s moonwalk, I just don’t remember any others besides The Cabbage Patch. Nothing to see, let us go back another ten years. And pick up dance moves of the 1970s. In the ’70s The Hustle was the trendsetter. In 1975, singer Van McCoy told everyone to “Do The Hustle!” In his popular song of the same name. The Bump and the YMCA dance. Were very popular. Do you remember the Funky Chicken? The Disco Finger, I don’t even remember that one, How about The Bus Stop? Then there was The Robot and The Lawnmower. Time for another ten years back In the 1960s there was another dance craze every time we changed our socks. The biggest craze was The Twist, but there were plenty of others, For example The Freddie. Lift your right arm and leg Lift your
left arm and leg. ... The Frug. Hitch-Hike, The Loco-motion, Mashed Potato. The Shimmy, The Swim. Then, in the ’50s there was this one dance called jitterbug, or swing, Lindy, the rock’n’roll, boogie-woogie, or Bop. The word Bop was new then, so almost everything was called the Bop. But that word usually referred to a family of low swiveling Charleston-like steps danced in place, sometimes without a partner. This is where we set the way back machine to 2021. Many of the dances today don’t even involve a partner. Does anybody really know how to do the Dougie? Don’t get me started on the dance called,” Twerking” this being a family column means I won’t go into detail about how to accomplish this excuse for a dance. You don’t have to be Fred Astaire or Ginger Rodgers to do what is considered dancing and I kind of thing that’s a shame. Thank you for reading the Lone Star Shopper. Have a great week and as always I’M PULLIN’ FOR YA!

Dear Dave, My boyfriend is not very good with money, and he is in a bad situation right now. He has a huge car payment every month, plus about $30,000 in credit card debt. Create a Travel Buffer
When booking your trip, plan an extra day or two on the front and back ends of your travel itinerary. This provides you with optimal time to finalize preparations, organize your packing and avoid lastminute scrambles. On the return trip, the added day gives you some cushion so you don’t have to stress about getting back to work if there are travel delays. You’ll also have a chance to unpack, unwind and settle back into your home before diving back into your daily grind.
Get Smart About Saving
One easy way to take the stress out of vacation planning is to use digital resources to save time and money. An option like a sightseeing pass from Go City offers savings on attractions and activities. A single pass grants access to multiple iconic landmarks and unmissable experiences in more than 25 cities across four continents. For example, in San Antonio you can take advantage of a Natural Bridge Caverns discovery package, or in New York City, you’ll be able to access the iconic and family-friendly exhibits at the Empire State Building.
BE A PART OF THE WIRELESS INDUSTRY. Canton Boost Mobile Is hiring. Apply in person 222 West Dallas, Canton.
Know When Less is More
Overpacking may seem like a strategy for reducing stress, since you’ll be prepared for whatever comes your way. However, many travelers find the opposite is true. Packing light means you’re more agile when it comes to transportation and have fewer things to keep track of or worry about losing. An added benefit: with fewer wardrobe options, you can focus your attention where it really belongs – enjoying your destination.
Keep Plans Loose
littlest travelers (and sometimes the bigger ones, too). That doesn’t necessarily mean you have to take a nap every single day, but you might consider alternating extra busy days with more laid-back activities so you don’t find yourself running on empty.
A rigid agenda only causes angst. The reality of travel is that you’re likely to, somehow or someway, get off schedule and fall behind. The ripple effect can quickly throw off an entire day, so a better bet is to keep plans flexible. With Go City’s mobile-based passes and flexible plan-as-you-go capabilities, travelers have the freedom to set their own schedules. It's no problem if you decide to linger over breakfast on your visit to Los Angeles; the whale watching adventure will be there when you’re ready. If you decide to make a stop at the beach on your San Diego getaway, no worries. You’ll still be able to scan your pass for kayaking later that day or even following days.

Have Contingency Plans
At home, things don’t always go according to plan, so you shouldn’t expect them to when you’re on the road. While planning for your trip, do some research on backup activities you can do if your original plans fall apart. If rain hampers your day at the amusement park, knowing you can easily access tickets to the indoor aquarium or familyfriendly museum nearby can save the day. Use the same mindset when planning for your accommodations and meals. Overbooking and extended wait times won’t foil you if you have alternatives in mind.
Prioritize Sleep and Relaxing Activities
You may be tempted to make the most of every moment of your trip but allowing ample down time to rest and recharge helps keep everyone feeling fresh and ready to tackle each new activity with enthusiasm. Being tired takes the joy out of traveling, and it can lead to cranky meltdowns among the

a t First Taste e v o Tips for introducing solid foods to your baby
FAMILY FEATURES
hroughout a child’s first years of life, there are several milestones for marking growth, development and progress toward maturity. As many parents can attest, few of those milestones are as messy, imperfect and joyful as those associated with a baby’s first tastes of new foods and flavors. The 2020-25 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recognize that from 6-24 months is a key age range for building healthy eating patterns with a variety of foods such as vegetables, fruits and whole grains. Starting solid foods, such as oatmeal or pureed vegetables and fruits, is the first step. However, beginning this journey can often bring parents additional stress as they question what and how much is right to feed their child. Get your little one on the path to a lifetime of healthy eating habits with these tips from Dr. Whitney Casares, pediatric consultant for Gerber.
Photos courtesy of Getty Images
Let the journey begin
Check with your pediatrician before starting any solid foods. Most babies are ready for solid foods around 6 months, but it’s important to not offer solids before 4 months. Around the middle of the first year of life, it is important for your baby to get iron from the foods he or she eats, especially if breastfed. Iron-fortified baby cereal can help provide this important nutrient to support healthy growth and brain development. Some signs your baby is ready for solid foods are when he or she has good head control, sits up with help or support, brings objects to his or her mouth and seems interested in food others are eating. For the first attempts at feeding solids, pick a time of day when your baby is in good spirits, wide awake and mildly hungry. You can offer breastmilk or formula before solids, if necessary, so your child is not uncomfortably hungry. Make sure your baby is sitting up and secured in a highchair. Use a soft, rubber-tipped spoon and start by guiding the spoon to your baby’s mouth with both your hand and your child’s hand on the spoon.
Introducing first tastes
Purees and infant cereal are wholesome and developmentally appropriate options for discovering solid foods and can help your baby discover a variety of flavors. Baby cereal is a good starting point for most babies because you can mix it with breastmilk or formula, and it is fortified with iron. This familiar taste can help your baby accept the new taste and texture of cereal.

While stage-appropriate purees can be made at home, another way to make your transition to solids easy is with an option like Gerber’s My 1st Starter Kits that come with fruit and vegetable varieties making it simple for parents to introduce baby to high-quality, nutritious and appropriate foods.
Follow baby’s lead
Your baby’s first tries at swallowing solid foods may be awkward and will likely require practice. If food is rejected, offer a few more spoonfuls and gauge your child’s response to decide whether to continue or try again another day. Responsive feeding is an approach that helps set your baby up for healthy eating habits. Observing your child’s reactions can help determine if he or she is adventurous or cautious, hungry or full. All of this can help you feed in a manner best suited for your baby. Look for cues your child is interested in eating more – smiling or reaching toward the spoon – as well as those that indicate fullness such as turning away, pushing the spoon away, leaning away from the spoon, shaking his or her head or spitting food out. Alternatively, baby-led weaning emphasizes exploration – of tastes, textures, colors and smells – and encourages baby to self-feed whole pieces of food cut into strips or small pieces. Spoons can also be preloaded for him or her, and this approach also promotes the development of gross and fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and chewing. (NAPS)—Now is the time for all things pumpkin: From pumpkin spice lattes and candles to pumpkin patches and carving, there’s something pumpkin for everyone— including your four-legged friends. Now you can share your love of pumpkin with your pooch. Just like us, dogs go crazy over the taste of pumpkin,” says Ronna Krahl, Vice President of Marketing—Companion Pet, Manna Pro Products, maker of Fruitables pet treats. “But what many people don’t realize is that there are also a number of health benefits that come along with the tasty treat.” The Power of Pumpkin Pumpkin isn’t just a delicious treat. When fresh, it can be an excellent food for supporting digestive health and weight loss. Pumpkins are 90 percent water, which makes them naturally low-calorie. They’re also rich in soluble and insoluble fiber, which helps promote satiety. The high fiber content coupled with the low calorie content makes pumpkin a terrific food to help your dog cut calories while feeling full. Why is this so important? Well, according to the Association of Pet Obesity Prevention, 56% of dogs are overweight or obese. Since obesity leads to a decreased quality of life for pets, finding something as effective at supporting weight-loss as pumpkin can have exciting implications. To that end, Fruitables has canned pumpkin digestive and weight-loss supplements that can help support your pet’s digestive issues or weight-loss journey. The supplements feature fresh pumpkin and vitamins in an easy-to-feed format. Introducing your pets to the power of pumpkin can help them live their best lives. Share the Love of Pumpkin With the many benefits associated with feeding pumpkin, you can feel good about giving it to your dog. In fact, pumpkin is so beneficial for dogs that it’s the first ingredient in 18 Fruitables pet products, including canned pumpkin supplements and a variety of dog treats. “Our unique flavor combinations aren’t just delicious for your dog, but for you and your family too,” adds Krahl. “You can experience the same bold flavors with the

While your dog enjoys the irresistible flavor and aroma of pumpkin flavored treats, you can make delicious pumpkin cookies for yourself.
In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cornstarch, pumpkin pie spice, baking powder, baking soda, and salt; set aside. Add butter and sugar to bowl of stand mixer fitted with paddle attachment. Cream until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Add egg and mix for another minute. Add pumpkin, sour cream, vanilla and almond extracts. Mix until well combined. Detach the bowl from the mixer. Using a silicone spatula, fold the dough once or twice so all ingredients are well combined and no flour streaks remain. Refrigerate dough for one hour up to overnight. Prepare the frosting: In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with paddle attachment, combine butter, yogurt, milk, and confectioners sugar. Beat until creamy and soft. Refrigerate. Preheat oven to 350°. Line cookie sheet with parchment. Set it next to work area dusted with flour. Remove chilled cookie dough from refrigerator. With a medium (1½ tablespoon) scoop, divide dough into 24 even portions, rolling each in flour to keep it from sticking. Dust off excess flour. Place as many cookie dough balls on cookie sheet, about 2½ inches apart. Flour the bottom of a glass and press each ball flat, to about ¾” thickness. Bake for 12 minutes. Let cookies rest on cookie sheet 2 minutes. Transfer to wire rack to cool. Repeat with remaining cookie dough balls. Remove frosting from refrigerator about 10-15 minutes before using. Once cookies have cooled completely, frost each and cover with sprinkles. Serve immediately or store, with wax paper between each cookie, in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.

Poems That Can Help With Healing In Hard Times (NAPS)—You may be able to bring some comfort to your friends and family members who have been grieving a loss in these difficult days. Poetry And Emotion There’s a new book that can help heal the hearts and minds of people who have lost jobs, opportunities, homes, even loved ones. Called “Words for the Unbearable: A Journey Through Loss” (IngramSpark), it was written by psychologist Enid Sanders, who has had her own losses to deal with. When her first child, Keri, died, the young mother spilled out a series of poems and put them away in a drawer. Decades later, when her husband Andrew died, she took them out and started writing again. At first she wrote for herself, for Andrew and to Andrew. A poem would rise up out of nowhere and she’d jump up and scribble it down, not knowing how it would end until she wrote the last word. Little by little, she shared the poems with friends and fellow therapists who pushed her to turn them into a book. The title comes from a friend who read the poems and said, “These are words for me, words for the unbearable.” Because it is poetry, the book reaches people at a deep level, helping therapists, patients, hospice workers, clergy, and anyone who grieves. Yet the book is not really sad. It’s helpful, engaging and even rather funny in spots because it tells the truth about grieving without self-pity—including the fact that it can make everyone a little crazy. Dr. Sanders also brings 34 years of experience as a noted clinical psychologist and bereavement counselor to writing this book. Having trained with internationally renowned child abuse expert Eliana Gil and specialized in helping abuse survivors for 18 years, she now focuses on helping clients negotiate grief and transition. Doctor’s Opinions As Dr. Gil herself put it: “I am wiping tears so that I can write...I feel as though I’ve been seen and heard and understood. Each poem is a picture memory, a reminder, a suggestion, a loving gesture, words that attest to the author’s love. I thought only I loved so deeply and hurt so profoundly, but she’s

A new book—by a woman who’s been there—can, with empathy and even humor, help many people get through difficult times. captured and clarified grief so well, it was comforting to read her words, even though many hurt like hell…Enid Sanders’ words evoke strong feelings and encourage reflection, while providing the strange comfort that comes from being understood.” Added psychiatrist Daniel Kostalnick, MD: “It is rare that an author can capture both the emotional and intellectual experience of grief, but Dr. Sanders has succeeded...Most of us find it impossible to express that experience, but Dr. Sanders uses her work as a psychologist—and a poet—to help the reader identify, name, and deal with the profound and universal aspects of grief...a work of compassion and understanding that comes from the soul of someone who has loved deeply.” Many therapists recommend the book to grieving patients and it can inspire people to write their own poetry, or to paint or find another creative outlet for their feelings. Baby Boomers Still Playing Together Even “Party Gaming” on Zoom (NAPS)—Over 70 million Baby Boomers grew up playing board games and watching game shows together— and they still love doing both. A new pop culture trivia game is taking Boomers on a nostalgic road trip back to the ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s. Designed to be played by two teams, Boom Again features thousands of questions drawing upon Boomer’s memories of advertising slogans and jingles, politics and social movements, movies, music, television, and more. Groups of Baby Boomers are laughing their way through memories on a wide variety of their experiences: from The Twist to Disco; American Bandstand to Soul Train; Doris Day all the way to Janis Joplin, and on to Steve Martin; Hula Hoops to The Pill; and poodle skirts to mini-skirts. And they are singing their way through all the music of their youth, too. This game is clearly not an S.A.T. test with questions like: • Name three of the most popular episodes of “I Love Lucy.” • Name the original main courses from Swanson’s TV Dinners. • What did Silly Putty have to do with the Sunday comic strips? The wide array of material is organized into easily remembered categories: Things We Heard—Music, jingles, famous speeches, lyrics, catchphrases Things We Saw—TV shows, movies, commercials, magazines, sporting events Things We Learned in School—The “3 R’s,” clubs, dances, school yard games In The News—Politics, sports, world events, Sunday comics, murder, war Stuff We Learned On the Street—

The Boomer generation knows how to have fun—such as with a new pop culture trivia game about the days of their youth. Toys, Fashion, Cars, Social Movements, Dances, etc. A Box Full of Memories The game comes packaged in a “cigar box” familiar to Baby Boomers who stashed their stuff in those as kids. It has two boxes of cards with 2,244 questions, and Boomer era tokens including a Metal Skate Key, a “Students For Kennedy” Button, a center insert for a 45-RPM Record, and more. There’s even a “Boomers’ Little Helper” magnifier in case someone forgets their readers. An Antidote to Pandemic Isolation Apparently nothing can keep a social Baby Boomer from hanging out with their friends. Party games have always brought people together. Now, even when friends and families haven’t been together in person, they have been playing Boom Again together on Zoom. It’s become known as a Boom Zoom!
