Strategy ‘Guerrilla’ is a book that is a response to ‘a book about a film’ brief. My starting point was The Battle of Algiers by Gillo Pontecorvo it documents a reconstruction of the Algerian struggle for independence in 1954. Made from the memoirs of a captured FLN guerrilla fighter. I set about this project by researching the film and all of the historical context it is surrounded by, constant reference was made to how accurately the guerrilla struggle has been depicted by Pontecorvo. Giving examples of how the film had been used in subsequent studies of guerilla warfare. And has been quoted to be a document and handbook of modern guerrilla warfare, even being screened in the Pentagon as America went into Iraq. Cementing the legitimacy of Pontecorvo’s film. With this in mind I began to look at other modern guerrilla conflicts, mapping them on a world map as I went. I Studied current guerrilla conflicts in the media like the occupation of Iraq and Iran. The civil war in Syria, trawling through hundreds of news articles, media reports and critical commentators. As well as attempting to pinpoint the origins of guerrilla warfare, diving into historical texts and journalese to find the first written accounts. It was easiest to read about the more successful wellknown guerrilla movements as is it became very clear that history is truly always written by the victors like the Cuban revolution It emerged that the method of guerrilla warfare has always been a legitimate tactic used throughout human history. Guerrilla being the Spanish for ‘little war’ coined in the peninsular war against Napoleon in 1808. As my response turned into an in depth research project into guerrilla warfare the amount of research I had on the topic made the research its self naturally evolve into the final response. My book consists of an abridged, edited and typeset version of Che Guevara’s guide to Guerrilla Warfare.

I wanted to make this response the perfect ‘hand book’ for a guerrilla. My general aim was to make the actual book an object that is functional, durable, discrete, informative, useful and portable. I have included in my book an armoury, hidden blade, guerrilla history and guerrilla strategy amongst other things. I have chosen to encase the final book in a unassuming bland hard back cover to protect the book, house the hidden blade and to make the final design discrete and durable. The size of the book was chosen to make it portable as well as being able to house the hidden blade which is held in place with magnetic paper. The layout and design of the book has been produced to make it readable and informative while maintaining clarity and rational through historical case study. Shedding light on what has developed over the years.

My book is a mixture of image and text, four columns was enough to give me flexibility to hang all text and images while also creating enough rigidity to create a common theme.

ITC Giovanni I chose to use ITC Giovanni as my body text as it comes in a number of weights which helps differentiate the various different sections of text. I felt that this font fitted the content perfectly as the serif’s of the font gave it an official, bold, strong, serious and authoritative feel. Perfect for the topic. I find the font easy to read and sits nicely on the page. I have used five different weights of this font. ChunkFive ChunkFive was my chosen display font. I have used it in different titles using is in full caps and lower case. It is strong and powerful and compliments the body text nicely.

Red has been used to highlight and draw attention to detail as well as specific titles, and fits in with the theme of ‘revolution’. I nick-named this colour ‘revolution red’ while producing this publication. Black has been used for most of the body text as it is clear to read. It is a suitable colour in relation to the content and works with red nicely.
