ABOUT THE ARTIST Ross Wilson is one of Ireland’s leading artists and sculptors. He graduated with a First-Class Honours degree in Fine Art from the University of Ulster and went on to receive his Masters degree from the prestigious Chelsea School of Art, London. He has been a visiting speaker at Harvard, Wheaton, Oxford and Cambridge Universities and the National Portrait Gallery London. His commissions include Nobel Laureates Seamus Heaney and Derek Walcott for the National Portrait Gallery in London. Sculpture commissions include the CS Lewis Centenary Sculpture East Belfast, Titanic Yardmen Sculpture and most recently Amy Carmichael—A Life And Legacy of Grace Sculpture. His work is included in private and public collections worldwide including: The Fogg Museum Harvard, The Keats-Shelley Museum Rome, Tate Britain, The Ashmolean Museum Oxford, Jesus College Cambridge, St Lucien National Trust, The British Museum, Boston Museum of Fine Art, The Ulster Museum, The Burns Library Boston College, Museo Federico Garcia Lorca Spain, The Houghton Library Harvard. His work has sold both at Christies and Sotheby’s London. Ross Wilson believes strongly in community outreach, through creativity and educational interaction within marginalized communities both in Ireland and more recently in Rwanda. His aim is to encourage others to see with the soul of the eye.

ABOUT THE ART The New Beginning is one in a series of works inspired by the Gospel scripture of John, chapter 1, verses 1–14. The Word of God entering our world both in a universal sense and intimate personal sense. The particular in the universal. In verse 10 of John chapter 1 we are informed: He was in the world, and though the world was made through Him, the world did not recognize Him. Verses 12 to 14 relates: Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God—children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.

In this visual interpretation, the light reflected in Mary’s loving downward gaze, reveals her intimate recognition that through this one birth, that by this Christ child, the purpose and promise of redeeming grace will now be born in others. Light and salvation have now come down deep, into a dark lost world. And that by seeking, receiving, and believing this world will recognise that the light they were searching for, was all along searching for them, bringing them to a place of new beginning. Christmas Greetings! DearFriends,

WELCOME TO SING! AN IRISH CHRISTMAS!

The much-loved English hymn writer Isaac Watts first published “Joy to the World” 300 years ago in 1719. Based on Psalm 98 it was never originally intended to be used as a carol but over many generations it has grown to become a Christmas standard all over the world. Through three centuries scarred with the wounds of war and struggles of every kind this joy-filled carol marks a simple steady rhythm of the unchanging hope in the promise the true King brings. It is one of our family’s favorites to sing together! It is also one of the ten traditional carols we have woven into the concert tonight. The great carols sing to us and through us year after year...gathering us in to the real story of Christmas, redirecting our hearts and minds to the “wonders of His love,” bringing comfort because “He comes to make His blessings known.” We hope you can treasure the joy and privilege it is to sing them together tonight,

G R AC E A N D P E AC E TO YO U,

Keith and Kristyn

SPECIAL GUESTS Over the past three years, Kristyn and I have had the privilege of partnering with many of the world’s leading artists, Christian speakers and musicians, through the Sing! Conference. We are thrilled to introduce you to many of them through the Christmas tour.

Joni Eareckson Tada is founder and CEO of Joni and Friends, an organization that accelerates Christian outreach in the disability community. Joni is the author of numerous bestselling books and has her own daily radio program. Joni is one of the world’s leading international advocates for people affected by disability. A diving accident in 1967 left her, then 17, a quadriplegic in a wheelchair. After two years of rehabilitation, she emerged with new skills and a fresh determination to help others in similar situations. She founded Joni and Friends in 1979, which quickly grew to provide Christ-centered programs to special needs families, churches, and communities. Joni survived stage III breast cancer in 2010, and still keeps a very active ministry schedule. Joni has written over 50 books, including her best-selling autobiography, Joni, which was made into a feature film. Her new award-winning daily devotional, A Spectacle of Glory, contains fresh biblical insights from her battle with cancer and chronic pain. Joni also served as General Editor of the Beyond Suffering Bible, a special edition published by Tyndale for people who suffer chronic conditions and their caregivers. She and her husband Ken were married in 1982 and reside in California.

Ellie Holcomb Christian singer/songwriter Ellie Holcomb, a Nashville native, began her musical career by touring with her husband and his band Drew Holcomb & the Neighbors. After 8 years, and with the birth of their daughter, Emmylou, Ellie opted to step out of the role of heavy touring. From that space came her debut solo album As Sure As The Sun, which charted #1 on the iTunes Christian chart and helped deem Holcomb the “Best New Artist” at the 2014 Dove Awards. Her most recent album, Red Sea Road, was released in January of 2017. Ellie has performed with Third Day, MercyMe, Stephen Curtis Chapman, Amy Grant, Chris Tomlin, and more.

Phil Keaggy is perhaps one of the most admired guitarists in music today. His fans range from those who aspire just to be able to play Keaggy’s mistakes, to professional musicians who have been strongly influenced by his style. And in between are those who don’t play guitar, yet find solace in his beautifully penned lyrics and memorable melodies. Phil’s solo career has spanned more than 40 years, and has included over 60 solo albums, both vocal and instrumental, 8 releases with his band, Glass Harp, as well as numerous duets and trio albums. One of the most sought-after studio guitarists, Phil also continues to sell out concerts all over the United States, with his ever-changing style, ranging from rock-and-roll to fully orchestrated instrumental compositions. Phil Keaggy continues to delight audiences all over the US performing primarily acoustic shows, and occasional concerts with a band. He is aware that God gave him a calling to deliver the Gospel through his music, and for over 40 years, Phil Keaggy has been grateful to do just that, and will hopefully continue to do so for many years to come.

David Kim Violinist David Kim was named Concertmaster of The Philadelphia Orchestra in 1999. Born in Carbondale, Illinois in 1963, he started playing the violin at the age of three, began studies with the famed pedagogue Dorothy DeLay at the age of eight, and later received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from The Juilliard School. Mr. Kim appears as soloist with The Philadelphia Orchestra each season as well as with numerous orchestras around the world. He also appears internationally at festivals such as Brevard, MasterWorks (USA) and Pacific (Japan). Mr. Kim has been awarded Honorary Doctorates from Eastern University in suburban Philadelphia, the University of Rhode Island, and Dickinson College. Mr. Kim resides in a Philadelphia suburb with his wife Jane and daughters Natalie and Maggie. He is an avid runner, golfer, and outdoorsman.

Fernando Ortega In the early 1990s, young composer and pianist Fernando Ortega, classically trained and musically complex, entered the Christian music scene. His distinctively earthy sound perplexed and even defied the pop status quo. Descended from eight generations of Mexican weavers, this son of the Rio Grande entwined thoughtful melodies with Celtic, bluegrass, classical and Latin American influences to create something unique and rare. Today, Fernando is one of Christian music’s most respected artists, his works encompassing modern hymns, liturgical songs, and Inspirational and praise & worship favorites. With three Gospel Music Association Dove Awards and a Billboard Latin Music Award to his credit, Fernando’s Christian radio hits include “This Good Day,” “Jesus, King of Angels” and “Sleepless Night.” Renowned for his stirring arrangements of beloved hymns—“Give Me Jesus” and “Be Thou My Vision,” among others—his solo discography features 18 projects in a heralded career spanning more than 25 years. His latest offering, the much-anticipated The Crucifixion of Jesus, follows the same devotional trajectory of 2011’s Come Down O Love Divine, this time centering on the events of Holy Week. “Every aspect of our lives should be measured out by the narrative of Christ’s life,” Fernando says. “Year after year, through the journey of this Holy season, “Christ’s ministry starts again and again.”

Matt Papa is a songwriter and artist from Atlanta, GA where he lives with his wife Lauren, their five adorable children…and five chickens. He’s the ninja behind hymns like “His Mercy Is More” and “Come Behold The Wondrous Mystery” and more. You can learn more about him, stalk him, or book him for your next event, at www.mattpapa.com.

ABOUT

KEITH AND KRISTYN GETTY Keith and Kristyn Getty occupy a unique space in the world of music as leading modern hymn writers. In re-inventing the traditional hymn form, the Gettys champion a catalogue of songs teaching Christian doctrine and crossing musical genres. Their hymns are sung throughout the world, with “In Christ Alone” (penned by Keith and Stuart Townend) anchoring their canon of globally-sung songs. Their initial publishers, Integrity Music, have estimated that more than 100 million people around the world sing their hymns every year.

The Getty’s are passionate about educating the church with their “Sing” Conference welcoming almost 15,000 attendees this year, bringing together people from theology, artistry and the world of Church music. Additionally, they have also founded a publishing company, record & print label and online resource for a new generation of writers and church musicians. The couple also tour with their Christmas show playing annually at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center, and has featured as a Public Television Special. They have played their hymns at venues from the Grand Ole Opry House to the Royal Albert Hall, and have sung for presidents, prime ministers, the UK National Prayer Breakfast at Houses of Parliament, and recently began a season of SING! arena events across the world, starting in their home towns of Belfast and Nashville. Keith was recently awarded Officer of the Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) personally by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II— the first contemporary Christian musician to receive this honor. Together with their four daughters, Keith and Kristyn live between Northern Ireland and Nashville.

ABOUT Getty Music exists to create and curate hymns for the 21st century church. Our passion has always been to join rich theology, timeless artistry and vibrant singing for the whole family of God in churches around the globe, and the work is expressed through multiple endeavors. Getty Music Publishing, built initially on the catalogs of Keith and Kristyn Getty, is now home for a brand of hymns and a collective of songwriters who share the vision for richer congregational singing, including Matt Papa, Matt Boswell, Matt Merker and Jordan Kauflin. Getty Music is also deeply committed to educating the church. This includes the annual SING! Conference in Nashville, with more than 14,000 people attending its events this year and over 100,000 watching online as well as other resources including new online initiative Getty Music Plus to help churches throughout the world better prepare for worship each Sunday. Getty Music Touring produces two major tours each year. The hymns tour is presented in churches and now arenas,

ABOUT while the Christmas tour plays iconic concert venues, including annual dates in The Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall. Getty Music Label creates audio and video recordings by Keith and Kristyn Getty, Matt Boswell and Matt Papa, the Sing! Live brand, the Getty Kids Hymnal as well as a number of new hymn related products, along with songbooks and sheet music to help churches sing. The label works in partnership with Capitol Christian Music Group and with broadcasters and print publishers around the world from PBS and BBC to TBN. Getty Music is actively committed to global mission. In partnership with a range of mission agencies they resource church leaders and provide scholarships for education in the majority world. They also organize an annual Global Hymn Sing, the first of which featured their reworking of the stirring missional anthem, “Facing a Task Unfinished.” All of this serves the vision of encouraging deep believers through the songs they sing..

Inspired by the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, Sing! is an initiative of Keith and Kristyn Getty to help individuals, families and churches deepen their faith through singing. The core values of the Sing! movement are rich theology, timeless artistry, and vibrant singing in the lives of individuals, families, churches, and communities. Keith and Kristyn’s Sing! book was released in September 2017 at the inaugural SING! conference, the first of the annual gatherings in Nashville. The SING! Community grows as we continue to invest in the lives of people serving to lead congregations in singing. The conference live-streams to a growing number of countries, and the work extends around the corner and around the world with one-day city conferences and arena shows plus the development of a new online tool launched this year and a global foundation being prepared for 2020.

Sing! An Irish Christmas Live at the Grand Ole Opry House AND ALL GETTY MUSIC NOW O N YO U R FAV O R I T E S T R E A M I N G S E R V I C E !

THE HISTORY OF SING! AN IRISH CHRISTMAS Our first collaboration as a married couple in 2004 was a collection of Christmas songs based around John 1, and every year we’ve tried to write new carols and songs for the church to sing. Irish Christmas has become a wonderful opportunity to share this music as it has evolved and changed over the years.

17

2010 DECEMBER

2011 DECEMBER

2012 DECEMBER

As with many creative ventures, it begins with a phone call. For Joy—An Irish Christmas (the initial title of this Christmas tour), the call was an invitation from Tom Bledsoe to be part of a special Christmas celebration in 2010 with George Beverly Shea and Cliff Barrows (with Billy Graham speaking on the first evening). The 30 minutes of music we prepared for that first night was expanded to a fuller evening of music subsequently presented to a number of churches that year.

After a trip to Ireland to record the Joy—An Irish Christmas studio album (called after our first daughter, Eliza Joy), the first official tour kicked off with 18 performances and finished with a sell-out performance at Nashville’s Schermerhorn Symphony Center.

The second year of the tour played to more than 30,000 people over 18 performances combining church concerts and numerous concert halls, again finishing at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville. In addition, there were two special Grand Ole Opry performances at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville.

2014 NOVEMBER/ DECEMBER

2015 NOVEMBER/ DECEMBER

After taking a year hiatus due to the birth of Charlotte Juliana, the third year of the tour was attended by an estimated 50,000 people at 18 performances. With a combination of box office sell-outs and standingroom-only general admission concerts, the tour premiered in Ontario and was recorded by the BBC. The tour featured a return to the Grand Ole Opry, our soldout premiere at Carnegie Hall with special guest Ricky Skaggs, and again finishing with a sold out evening at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center.

In 2015, Joy—An Irish Christmas was presented in more than 20 cities, to an estimated 60,000 people across North America and in several prestigious concert halls with sold out performances including Carnegie Hall (New York), The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (Washington, D.C.), Roy Thomson Hall (Toronto), and The Fox Theatre (Atlanta). A live performance was also released on CD and DVD and broadcast across America on Public Television stations during the Christmas season.

2017 DECEMBER

2018 NOVEMBER/ DECEMBER

Following the launch of the Sing! conference initiative, the focus deepened toward congregational singing and the celebration of carols in particular. This tour featured some of the greatest memories in the history of Irish Christmas from Joni Eareckson Tada doing the readings at Carnegie Hall and sharing what Christmas means to her 50 years on from her accident, as well as Vice President and Second Lady Pence attending the Kennedy Center show and hosting the band to a private performance in their home. Kristyn was pregnant with their fourth child, Tahlia, and new special guests included David Kim (concertmaster of The Philadelphia Orchestra) performing Winter from the Four Seasons, and our friend David Platt sharing a Christmas message at two of the events.

2016 DECEMBER With both a deepening desire to clearly tell the Christmas story and a growing emphasis on carol singing, we developed the second half “lessons in carols” format akin to the traditional service from King’s College, Cambridge. We had four pieces of art commissioned, to represent the four songs of Christmas as told in Luke. We developed the Concert Hall Series with Alistair Begg at each event and new special guests including Heather Headley, David Kim, Blair Linne, Andrew Nemr, and Laura Story, as well as welcome returns from John Patitucci and Ricky Skaggs.

2018 saw more sellout performances including Carnegie Hall (with Phil Keaggy’s anniversary performance of “Silent Night” and Dr Timothy Keller preaching the Christmas story) and the Kennedy Center (which featured a line-up of brilliant young artists performing for the Vice President and Second Lady). We also took the show to the West Coast for the first time with a wonderful evening where Joni Eareckson Tada shared her memories of Christmas alongside guest performances from Matt Redman, Ricky Skaggs and Pedro Eustache. The guest line-up across the run of shows continued to diversify with appearances by some of the Getty Music songwriters. And we closed with a grand finale in Nashville where Alison Krauss duetted with Kristyn on “In Christ Alone” and “Joy To The World.”

SING! AN IRISH CHRISTMAS 2019 Live Television performance of Sing! An Irish Christmas from the Grand Ole Opry House airing on TBN, the release of Sing! An Irish Christmas album, the Getty Kids Hymnal—Family Carol Sing and the inaugural lifetime achievement award presentation.

SING! AN IRISH CHRISTMAS 2020 In honor of the 10th anniversary of Sing! An Irish Christmas, we are inviting many of the special guests who have been favorites over the past decade and putting together our most expansive national tour yet. Don’t miss it!

TRADITIONAL CHRISTMAS CAROLS EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW BY KEITH GETTY

T

hree years ago, during the Christmas tour, we were interviewed on national radio about the peculiarity of our Christmas show as a public television broadcast focusing on Christmas carols, when they claimed only one of the top thirty carols in America is actually Christian.

The longer we thought about it, the more we became convinced as hymnwriters, one of our main jobs with this event is to introduce people to some of the greatest hymns of the Christian faith—the greatest Christmas carols.

This year we’ve updated this article as an introduction to the program sheet music so you can enjoy singing in harmony and taking them home to share with family and friends. We hope you enjoy singing them and that you fill each of your homes and your churches with them…we’ve included these on the new Sing! An Irish Christmas album as well as the Getty Kids Hymnal—Family Carol Sing, so that your children can also grow up knowing them.

1

HARK! THE HERALD ANGELS SING was penned by Charles Wesley and included in his 1739 Methodist hymnal. This theologically rich classic was later set to music by Felix Mendelssohn. It began as “Hark, How All the Welkin Rings,” but George Whitefield did us all a favor by changing the words to “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.” We conclude the first half of our Christmas concert with this song, including an Irish reel and cultural Irish dance, which I suspect would have pleased neither Wesley nor Mendelssohn!

21

2

COME, THOU LONG EXPECTED JESUS appeared in Charles Wesley’s book of 18 Christmas songs in 1745, and it’s one of my three favorite hymns today. The song captures how centuries of waiting, longing, and weeping find ultimate resolution in Christ: “Israel’s strength and consolation / Hope of all the earth thou art / Dear desire of every nation / Joy of every longing heart.”

3

O COME, ALL YE FAITHFUL is a Christmas call to worship, mostly likely written by John Francis Wade, a artist who created beautiful manuscripts decorated with exquisite floral images. His hymn “Adeste Fidelis” remained a Latin masterpiece for 100 years before being translated into English by Frederick Oakeley. For congregational and a cappella purposes, this carol sings beautifully.

4

IN THE BLEAK MIDWINTER is among our most plaintive carols, partly because of the haunting melody by Gustav Holst. Penned by English poet Christina Rossetti, the lyrics first appeared in 1872. The last stanza says it all: “What can I give him, poor as I am? / If I were a shepherd I would bring him a lamb; / If I were a wise man I would do my part, / Yet what I can I give him? Give my heart.”

5

JOY TO THE WORLD, with its triumphant cadence and rousing spirit, was written by the man commonly called the “Father of the English Hymn,” Isaac Watts. This hymn was published in 1719 and wasn’t even originally considered a Christmas carol. Check out Matt Boswell’s article in this program.

6

O COME, O COME EMMANUEL is a medieval Latin hymn dating from the 800s. It was one of a series of antiphons sung each December, and it isn’t hard to imagine the mystical beauty of this hymn echoing off the walls of remote monasteries during the Middle Ages. This particular antiphon was discovered by an English minister and musician named John Mason Neale, who rendered it into English and published it in 1851.

7

SILENT NIGHT was a carol written to convey hope in the gospel for ordinary people at Christmas time. Whereas much music had been previously written in the context of sustaining the power of the King in church, Silent Night cut across class distinctions and reminded people of the universal hope Christ’s birth brings. Inspired by a Christmas play he had just seen, Joseph Mohr, a young priest, wrote a poem about the night when angels announced the birth of the long-awaited Messiah to humble shepherds on a hillside. Franz Gruber had only a few hours to write the melody for the service that same Christmas Eve and famously had to perform on guitar as the church organ was broken.

8

ANGELS WE HAVE HEARD ON HIGH is one of the most joyful and well-written choruses ever composed. The lyrical journey shines a light on the reality of incarnation in a way that refreshes the soul each time you sing it.

9

O LITTLE TOWN OF BETHLEHEM was inspired by Philadelphia pastor Phillips Brooks’ visit to Bethlehem. Around 1867, Brooks wrote the lyrics and passed them along to the church’s worship leader, Lewis Redner, who composed the melody. It was first sung by a group of six Sunday school teachers and 36 children.

10

ONCE IN ROYAL DAVID’S CITY might be the least known of these 10 carols, but we mustn’t lose its message or music. Cecil Frances Alexander was an Irish pastor’s wife who published this carol for children in 1848. Today, many consider her works too deep to sing in adult congregations. If ever we needed empirical evidence that the Irish actually did save civilization, this may actually be it.

These 10 carols—among many others—are treasures that remind us that hope has dawned in the little town of Bethlehem, in royal David’s city, and that we should all join the triumph of the skies.

300 Years of JOY TO THE WORLD BY MATT BOSWELL

PHOTO, GILBERT LENNOX

I

magine going through the Christmas season without the familiar lyrics and jubilant tune of “Joy to the World” pronouncing the birth of Christ. It would be near impossible. This year marks the 300th anniversary of one of the most beloved carols that adorn the celebration of the both of Christ. The text now known as ‘Joy to the World’ was written by Isaac Watts (16741748), who is heralded as the ‘father of English hymnody’. While the hymn is often featured during the Christmas season, it was originally written to be sung throughout the calendar year as a metrical version of Psalm 98.

Let us recognize that the glad theme running through this hymn is two-fold: it is a joy that looks back to the incarnation and finds joy in the coming of the Messiah. At the same time, it is also a hopeful joy which looks forward to the second coming of Christ. From the first time this hymn was published in 1719, to the pews of our churches today, its powerful call to “repeat the sounding joy” has been a mainstay. This text has carried the church through these three centuries through the rise and fall of nations, expansive enterprise, and much suffering for the global church. So, as we think of this beloved hymn this year, let us recognize that the glad theme running through this hymn is two-fold: it is a joy that looks back to the incarnation and finds joy in the coming of the Messiah. At the same time, it is also a hopeful joy which looks forward to the second coming of Christ.

JOY LOOKING BACK Isaac Watts understood all of Scripture as pointing to Jesus Christ, (Luke 24:44) so when it comes to his version of Psalm 98, he wants to ‘make David sing like a Christian’ by showing how Christ is the fulfillment of the passage. One of themes in verses one and two explore nuances of the story of the birth of Christ. In the line ‘let every heart prepare him room’, we hear an echo of the innkeeper who had no room for the mother of Christ while labor was nearing. (Luke 2:7) We rightly sing this lyric as an invitation to prepare room in each of our hearts for the good news of the Savior’s birth.

The second verse is replete with the reminder that the praise of God is commanded to be in our hearts and on our lips. We are to employ our songs of the Savior and his rule and reign. The Gospel of Luke records four specific songs that each provide a unique contribution to the songs of the savior’s birth. Mary magnifies and rejoices in the mercy of God. (Luke 1:46-55) Zechariah sings a song of prophecy that Jesus would fulfill God’s promise. (Luke 1:68-79) The angels “sing” the pronouncement of the coming of Christ. (Luke 2:14) Simeon sings a prayer confessing he can depart in peace now that his eyes have seen the coming of the Christ. (Luke 2:29-32) Each of these accounts show the resounding joy of singing the gospel of Christ.

JOY LOOKING FORWARD The third verse of this text is often passed over because of its imagery of the curse, but without the presence of the curse (Gen. 3:16-19), the promise of deliverance loses its power. (Gen. 3:15) These lines rightly point us to the day that will come when God’s blessing (Gen. 3:17) flows as far as the curse is found. We rejoice looking back on the faithfulness of God, and we also rejoice looking forward to what God has promised in the future. We sing between what is and what will be; the already and the not yet of God’s great story of redemption. With this glorious vision in sight, we see all of the earth called to come and make a joyful noise of praise to God. While the sting of sin is great, there is a hope that is greater: Jesus Christ who rules the world with truth and grace. It is this grace that causes hearts dead in sin to come alive in Christ. (Eph. 2:8-9) The final two lines of our hymn do not tie up our story neatly with the end of a story, but with a call to continue marveling in

The glories of his righteousness, And wonders of his love. May we be a people who love and sing and wonder with this kind of unflinching joy! (Phil. 4:4) We rejoice in Christ by looking back and remembering his great faithfulness and love. We rejoice by looking forward to his coming again where on the shores of forever there is an even greater joy to come.

Day 2 JOY HAS DAWNED UPON THE WORLD, PROMISED FROM CREATION/GOD’S SALVATION NOW UNFURLED, HOPE FOR EVERY NATION.

Kristyn has written a 25-day advent devotional based on three carols for her kids this Christmas. To read and sing along visit gettymusic.com/ gettykids.

‘In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God...In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.’ (JOHN 1:1,4 & 5)

Do you find it hard to sleep on Christmas Eve? It’s dark and you just can’t wait for the morning! I still find it hard to sleep on Christmas Eve even though I’m all grown up because I’m so excited! Before the very first day there ever was it was dark. The earth had not been made yet. God was there and He had an exciting plan to make something. He said ‘let there be light’ and there was! And it was sparkling without a smudge. The earth was completely safe and there was nothing to fear. When Adam and Eve disobeyed God sin and fear and trouble like night fall came into the world. For thousands of years people waited for God to rescue them, to take away the darkness. Then suddenly like the sun rising in the sky Jesus came into the world. The story of Christmas is the greatest rescue story—God comes to save us. We do not need to fear the dark. We can be excited for the morning to come because of the greatest gift Christmas brings to us—Our Savior, the light of the world, has come!

Father in heaven, Thank you for sending the Lord Jesus, the Light of the world to save us. Help me to remember that you are always with us through every night and day, Amen

Isaiah 9:2, 6 2

The people walking in darkness have seen a great light;

on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned. 6

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given,

and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Luke 2:8–14 8

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby,

keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” 13

Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host

appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, 14

“Glory to God in the highest heaven,

and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

Tho u Wh o Wa s t R ic h Be y o n d All S p l e n d o r Thou who wast rich beyond all splendor, All for love’s sake becamest poor; Thrones for a manger didst surrender, Sapphire-paved courts for stable floor. Thou who wast rich beyond all splendor, All for love’s sake becomes poor. Thou who art God beyond all praising, All for love’s sake becamest man; Stooping so low, but sinners raising Heavenwards by thine eternal plan. Thou who art God beyond all praising, All for love’s sake becamest man. Thou who art love beyond all telling, Saviour and King, we worship thee. Emmanuel, within us dwelling, Make us what thou wouldst have us be. Thou who art love beyond all telling, Saviour and King, we worship thee.” In 1934 a young American missionary couple called John and Betty Stam were martyred in China. During this dangerous time Frank Houghton, the editorial secretary for China Inland Mission (now called OMF), decided he should travel throughout the country meeting with the missionaries and encouraging them at their posts. During his journey he was inspired by the words of 2 Corinthians 8:9 ‘though He was rich yet for your sake He became poor’ and he penned this Christmas carol. The lyrics are as beautiful as they are challenging and reach to each of us wherever we are and whatever we have with the incomparable riches of Christ.

Give your friends and loved ones more than gifts this Christmas. Give comfort to a survivor of trafficking with a warm blanket. Give joy to a widow when you help her start her small business. Give rescue to a child trapped in cybersex trafficking; all in honor of someone you love. While most gifts last only a moment—they’re broken, lost or forgotten—these gifts last a lifetime.

Give Rescue this Christmas.

NEW FROM

JONI EARECKSON TADA

As Joni writes in this updated and expanded edition, she is much closer to heaven than she was when she first wrote about it. It is from this vantage point that she reflects on how we can live for Jesus as we look forward to our real home.

In Denmark a Different Drummer WHERE MUSIC WAS A SIGNAL OF TRANSCENDENCE! BY JENNY GUINNESS

A

rriving in Denmark as an eleven-year-old Californian, I was filled with an odd sensation of coming home. That was partly the relief of emerging from an 8-year nightmare of a severely broken and violent home. But there was something more. Back in California, I had been just about to cross the threshold from childhood into the beckoning teenage culture. Copenhagen, by contrast, was full of teenagers who walked arm-in-arm with their parents, animated, breathtakingly courteous, with an inimitable beauty of innocence shining in their faces. I watched them listen to Bach, Mozart and Chopin in Tivoli Garden concerts—with their parents. These Danish counterparts to the bored and blasé teenagers I’d left behind in California seemed to exult in what it meant to be a family. I longed to get to know these people.

school during the holidays, to join them for Christmas!

My longing to know the Danes was realized through our asking directions of a passing family who invited us for tea! This family of five—the Stilbos: three teenagers and their parents—lived in a third floor walk-up of a post-war, ‘purpose-built’ concrete block. But inside, their tiny flat became like heaven to me.

First came the beautiful hymns, then the uproarious carols, b`efore we extinguished the candles, and exuberantly bid each other “God Jul!” Song can reach places in a battered heart that nothing much else can. The harmony flowing from their souls and the worship shining in their faces made me feel God’s reality. It was not that their singing was about God—it was itself the carrier of His immediate Presence. Another word I didn’t know the meaning of at eleven was transcendence. But I learned at eleven that singing can melt a frozen heart, say the otherwise unsayable; dismantle, disarm and penetrate hearts that are turning to stone; to release in a heart what God had originally put there and free it to one day connect with Him. Later as a Vogue cover girl in NYC, listening to Billy Graham—through whom at that time I became a Christian—I realized that all the beauty of song long ago in Denmark was a critical signal of transcendence awakening my heart and pointing forward to the goal of all my later searching...to Jesus Himself!

By LA standards, they might have been considered poor; yet as I surveyed their immaculately-kept home, I was struck by how rich it was with love and laughter, walls of books, gorgeous needlepoint, and above all else, their music. Every member of the Stilbo family played a musical instrument. Their music was exquisite and filled their world with joy...joy that penetrated to the very marrow. It was the first time I was struck with the force of moral beauty. Although such words were yet unformed in my adolescent mind, nevertheless, this was the first dawn-light of my awakening to something far bigger than the darkness that previously engulfed our lives. At the end of our time in Copenhagen the Stilbo’s invited me to return from boarding

63

The New York Met currently houses a painting by Johan Christian Dahl, titled “Copenhagen Harbour By Moonlight”. It captures exactly the luminous scene waiting for me in December as I stood on the ferry deck, long before first light, to see all five Stilbos waiting at the dock to meet me with a bouquet of flowers, embracing me as if I were their very own. “Let us tell you about the Danish Christmas... it lasts many days!” The centerpiece of everything turned out to be a nightly gathering of friends and neighbors to light all the candles on the Christmas tree (real candles lit with real fire), and join hands in a ring around the tree to SING! All ages singing their hearts out together as one. This was Christmas to them! Christmas had nothing to do with what was under the tree but with who was around the tree sharing in the songs of Jesus Christ the coming King.
