East MACLEAN Coast CEO and Founder of Lifestyle Exclusive Interview

withALEX

H

alifax’s famous East Coast Lifestyle brand has had quite a year, and so has owner and founder, Alex MacLean! Between opening a newwaterfront location, meeting the President of the United States and launching lots of new product, it’s evident this brand only continues to thrive and grow with the determination and ambition of MacLean and his team. Not to mention, ECL was awarded the 2015 Halifax New Business of the Year by the Halifax Chamber of Commerce. MacLean, a loyal Halifax-resident started East Coast Lifestyle for a school project at Acadia University in his entrepreneurial class. Then, in 2013 and after receiving an $800 loan from his father, the brand took off. Expanding from 30 hoodies, East Coast Lifestyle has launched an array of products including toques, tank tops, toddler apparel, socks, necklaces, sweatpants and more! What is new with East Coast Lifestyle? We’re excited to launch our new fall/winter collection of a lot of custom products that we’ve never made before. 2016 is going to be our biggest year yet and we’re stoked!

Tell us about your new store on the waterfront: It’s been an amazing summer with our new flagship store that opened in June. We will be keeping the store open all year round as it has been a great success. With so many new people coming in through the Halifax port we love meeting new East Coasters.

East Coast Lifestyle feature Do you see East Coast Lifestyle opening more permanent stores in Atlantic Canada? 100%. We hope to open several more across Canada for next year. How has East Coast Lifestyle grown in the last year? We have now climbed to 250,000 Facebook followers. We’ve also acquired a new retailer called Below The Belt with 35 stores west of Ontario. We also opened our new headquarters office in Halifax as well. What is the biggest difference from East Coast Lifestyle from when you first opened to now? We’ve gained a lot more celebrity endorsements than we had in the start and still haven’t paid anyone to wear the gear. Everyone is just happy to support a brand they love and for that we are very thankful. What has been your biggest challenge? Our biggest challenge has been having international knockoffs all around the world. Thankfully we have a great trademark lawyer who has had to shut down stores in Spain, France and across Canada.

Australia and the United States. In the next 5 years I hope to have these two countries carrying ECL and start a social entrepreneurial organization to help young business people in our community to achieve their dreams. What has been your favourite design/product so far? My favourite product so far has been the provincial toques we made for each province in Atlantic Canada. They are 100% Canadian made

and allow customers to rep not only the East Coast but their province as well. What do you wear the most from ECL? I’ve been wearing our new fall collection a lot which releases this September. Tell us about your recent trip to Washington, DC: I placed 2nd in the world at the Global Student Entrepreneur awards out of 2,500 applicants. This was a huge honour as I was the only person representing Canada. After the competition I was invited into the Whitehouse with President Barack Obama and the sharks of Shark Tank. This was a great networking event and a very cool experience. What has been your most memorable moment? My most memorable moment was definitely opening our first ECL flagship store and having a 4 hour line up in a rainstorm to wait for the grand opening. I couldn’t believe the support.

The East Coast Lifestyle brand started from an $800 loan from my father. Anything is possible with hard work, big dreams and ambition.

What is it like seeing people around you wearing East Coast Lifestyle? It’s an amazing feeling to see the support and I couldn’t be more proud and thankful for everyone who is reppin’ worldwide. Still puts a smile on my face when I see someone wearing the clothing – especially outside of the East Coast. You’ve expanded to toques, toddler apparel, accessories and more – do you see yourself continuing to expand and grow? Absolutely! We have a lot of new gear coming out which is very exciting. Stay tuned for jackets, boxers, hockey jerseys and more coming soon! Where do you see East Coast Lifestyle in 5 years? We are currently speaking with retailers in

What do you want people to take away from this article? This brand started from an $800 loan from my father. Anything is possible with hard work, big dreams and ambition.

Interested in purchasing one of East Coast Lifestyle’s many products? You can purchase the apparel and accessories online at http://eastcoastlifestyle.ca/ and also at their permanent store next to the Halifax Seaport Farmers’ Market. Visit their website’s store locator for other stores such as Pseudio that also carries a variety of their products.

Top10 September 10. Thrift Store Shopping : Not only will this be cheaper than most shops, there is also something novel about rummaging through funky clothes and trying on worn in sweaters with your friends. There are thrift stores all over Halifax such as the row of second hand shops on Queen Street, Make New on the up-and-coming Agricola Street, Crimson Clover on Birmingham and for really inexpensive clothes try the Salvation Army off Green Street! You will be sure to come out with some statement items!

4 .Have a beer at the Beer Garden : This summer, downtown Halifax finally got its first ever waterfront beer garden where you can have a cold bevy, snack and the perfect view. Fortunately, it will be staying open until October so you can still enjoy this location throughout the perfect month of September! 3. Take in some HOCKEY! The NHL Preseason: : The New York Islanders vs Carolina Hurricanes is coming to Halifax on September 26th at the ScotiaBank Centre! If you are a fan of the NHL, hockey or either of these teams, I highly suggest you head on over for an evening of GREAT hockey!

9. Check out the Atlantic Film Festival : If you are a big movie buff, this is the event you need to be at this September with a first look at some of the best international, national and local films of the festival season. With over 150 films from Atlantic Canada and around the world, there will be no shortage of entertainment!

8.Head to the new Halifax Central Library : If you are headed back to school, this new library is really something to look forward to. The new Halifax Central Library on Spring Garden Road has amazing architecture, delicious café drinks and snacks and top of the line technology that will actually motivate you to get your school work done!

DO THIS SEPTEMBER

1. Apple picking in the valley: Just outside of Halifax, about a 45 minute drive is the beautiful Valley with tons of orchards where you can go apple picking! September is the perfect time for this kind of activity: it’s just cooling down, you can finally breakout your chic scarf and start getting excited for fall. It’s also the ideal outing for a date, family time or even with your girlfriends. Once you have all those apples you can bake with them or just eat them as is on your way to work or class!

7. Go to the Halifax Seaport Farmers’ Market : Whether for breakfast, lunch, dinner, grocery shopping or socializing, the Halifax Seaport Farmers’ Market is a great place to stock up on local produce, wine, products and more. The market is open every day and yearround. The best days to go are Saturday and Sunday, as that’s when the most vendors are open! 6.Halifax Urban Folk Festival : Need plans for the first weekend of September? This annual music festival promotes songwriters from across Canada in the Halifax downtown core and parts of the North End. Enjoy amazing music at some of Halifax’s best urban venues such as The Carleton and The Seahorse Tavern

5. Go to the Halifax Public Gardens : Surprisingly, September is one of the best months to go to the gardens in downtown Halifax, not to mention, it’s free! With ponds, fountains, statues, wildlife, over 140

2. Take the ferry to Dartmouth and go to TIBS : – If you like coffee and croissants, you NEED to go to Two If By Sea in Dartmouth (or the Halifax location, but I prefer the novelty of their first location) for the best croissant you will ever have. The chocolate one has always been my favourite, but other popular flavours are plain butter, Prosciutto & cheese and the flavour of the week!
