All About Surfing with

Scotty and Logan! Photography by Scott Sherin

WRITTEN by KATIE CONKLIN

Nova Scotia and Atlantic Canada as a whole have been pegged as ideal surfing destinations for a while now. With our high tides, coastal access and friendly people it’s no wonder people travel across the world to surf on our many Nova Scotia beaches. Pro surfer Logan Landry and photographer Scotty Sherin know about Nova Scotia’s surfing scene all too well and can’t get enough of its year-round beauty. Although Scotty didn’t grow up in Nova Scotia like Logan did, they both seem to have a deep appreciation for the city and the amazing surfing both from a photography standpoint and a sport standpoint “Myself and Scotty met years ago before Scotty was even a photographer. We met through a mutual friend and have been hanging out ever since” said Logan. Logan started surfing when he was roughly 11 years old and got into the sport because of its uniqueness compared to other sports. “I thought it was an exciting thing to try and as I got older I found out that Nova Scotia really had a lot to offer a surfer,” said Logan. Scotty started surfing before he got into photography. When

he graduated from Dalhousie University he took a year off to travel and surf. “Over that year I started shooting photos, documenting the surf and my travels. When I returned to NS, I started exploring the coast with my friend Nico Manos who is a professional surfer. I managed to get a few images published early on and that kind of just set the tone.”

PHOTOGRAPHER

SURFER

Career Highlights: I’m starting to get paid to travel to amazing places and shoot photos. I’m counting that as a career highlight. Biggest career highlight to date is working as a photo intern at Surfing Magazine in California. Favourite Nova Scotia location to photograph surfers: I can’t tell you, I’d be shot. Weapon of Choice: I’m a Cannon guy. My go to is a 1D Mark 4. I’m making a serious effort to shoot more film. I never leave home without my Pentax MX. Lenses I’m mostly using a Cannon 100-400L and 24-70L. Favourite Halifax Photo Shop: Henry’s . What do you miss the most about nova scotia when on road: My girl, donairs and my dog. Favourite surfer term/slang: “Shoots Brah.” This isn’t surfing specific, it’s Hawaiian. I like it because every time I hear it used, it’s in a different context.

Career Highlights: Member of both junior and men’s Canadian national surf team, published in multiple surf publications and was featured in a few corporate commercials and a number of successful web videos. Weapon of Choice: In surfing, in order to adapt to the ever changing conditions you have to have a board for every situation. The best way to describe that would be to say a golfer wouldn't try to play a round of golf with just a driver. I ride for a surfboard company out of California called Chemistry Surfboards and they make really great boards. Favourite Halifax Photo Shop: Pro Skates on Qunipool Road would be my shop of choice. They have a great staff that know their product and can help you make an educated purchase so you’re not out there on the wrong equipment.

When asked “what do you want our readers to take away from this” Scotty mentioned that he’d be happy to see more people getting out and exploring Nova Scotia and the rest of the Maritimes. ”I’d like to hope my images help promote this movement.” Interested in learning more about surfing or taking lessons? Check out East Coast Surf School or Visit Nova Scotia for more information.

10. Break out the board games: It can get pretty gloomy and cold during Halifax winters, so sometimes it’s nice to just stay inside and keep warm with some fun activities like board games! Invite some friends over and have each friend bring their favourite game and have a tournament. Pair this with some rainy day snacks like popcorn, fruit platters or even some wine or beer! 9. Bake or cook something epic: Long winter days (where going outside is just not an option) calls for baking and cooking! This is the best time to make something epic in the kitchen because time is on your side and there is no need rush! Put on some music, make some tea and get chopping! You could bake some amazing cookies or muffins (good for freezing) or make a huge hearty soup! The options are endless. 8. Read a book: This happens to all of us. You asked for a ton of books at Christmas, it’s already February and a page hasn’t been turned! Now is your chance. No excuses. Put on your cozy clothes, make a snack and curl up with that book you are dying to read but just couldn’t find the time. 7. Epic bubble path with all the fixins’: There aren’t too many people who don’t love a nice warm bath for optimal relaxation, but this winter why not step it up a notch. Light some candles, add Epsom salts, bubbles, dim the lights, turn on the music and now you have the epitome of relaxation. Enjoy. 6. Have an at home spa day: Going to the spa is fun, but can definitely get expensive, especially when you can usually make everything at home for a bargain! Deep condition your hair with a DIY treatment consisting of olive oil, coconut oil and honey (or whatever recipe you find online!). You could also make a homemade

face mask, body exfoliator and other skincare treatments. This way, you have the whole day to be covered in ingredients from your cupboard and no rush to get out the door! You’re glowing skin and hair will thank you. 5. Rearrange your house or apartment: Looking to spruce up your apartment? All you need to do is rearrange some of the furniture or house accessories and your place will look like new! You could even add some DIY items to make it extra fresh! 4. Host a tea party: How cute is that? Go to a vintage or second hand shop, purchase some dainty tea cups and invite your friends over for some tea! Serve with biscuits or cookies and have a good old fashion conversation that doesn’t involved technology! 3. Host a wine or beer and cheese pairing gathering: Get your roommates together or invite a group of friends and have your own cheese pairing party! Have each friend bring a bottle of wine, a case of beer or a block of cheese! Make sure to do your research and find out which cheeses go with what type of alcohol. Have fun! 2. Scrapbook: A fun snow day activity is scrapbooking! Print off a bunch of photos from a certain occasion or even give it to someone as an anniversary gift, for example. You will have so much fun going through old photos, using cute stickers and writing about your memories. You could also do a family cookbook for yourself or another family member! 1. Whip out the old school Nintendo console: We all have one of those old school game consoles, and if you don’t, just buy one off Kijiji with a friend or roommate! You will have so much fun playing Mario Cart or Donkey Kong that you’ll forget about the blistery outdoor weather and the guilt of being inside all day won’t even phase you!
