01 NEXT OFFICE Makeup Company | New York, NY | Steelcase Competition
NEXT is a start-up clean beauty cosmetics company located in New York City. NYC is often referred to as the “melting pot” because of its wide range of cultures. Makeup is an integral part of every culture. Similar to the workplace industry, the makeup industry is becoming more diverse and inclusive. Both the makeup industry and the NEXT office are embracing the new, or the NEXT. The NEXT office design derives from the elements of lipstick. Lipstick is one of the most popular and well known makeup products in the world. The form of lipstick is similar to the form of the skyscrapers in NYC. A tube of lipstick and an NYC skyscraper display elements of stacking, layering, hierarchy, evolution, and scale. These principles can be seen throughout the office design and in the parti diagram. Lipstick comes in a variety of types, textures, and colors and is packaged in many different ways. All of these elements inspire the design of the NEXT office.

PARTI DIAGRAM Four rotated rectangles create the parti diagram. Each rectangle represents a different zone on the floorplan. Within each of these zones there are smaller rotated rectangles that create focus points or desintations within the office. This is similar to when you walk down the block in NYC, there are many different focus points and destinations.
Project Development Meeting Room
The project development meeting room is equipped with the technology needed for zoom calls and presentations. It also includes white boards, pin-up space, and display shelving. The wall and drop down ceiling are covered with felt for acoustic control. This open work space utilizes felt paneled ceilings to control acoustics. It is located near windows because natural views have been proven to increase productivity and wellness. A celebration board is placed near the open work space and the private offices in order to inspire the employees and inform them about important things going on within the company.

Monumental Stair + Small Meeting Room The monumental staircase highlights a feature wall that is used for branding. Lots of glass is used throughout the office to make it feel more open. The glass displays the varying textures of lipstick while also relating to the materiality of the skyscrapers in NYC. The Steelcase VIA wall system is used to create meeting rooms and private offices and still have a balance between open and enclosed.

Drop Down Space + Open Work In this perspective the open work area and drop down space are separated by 3form glass panels. This allows daylight to come through but creates some visual and acoustical privacy. Acoustic sound baffles can be seen over the open work area. The 8th floor is used primarily by employees. The outside terrace can be used for work or employees can easily walk up from the cafe to rejuvenate.
02 PERSIST SPA MS Spa | Breckenridge, CO | Bienenstock Competition
Persist is a spa for multiple sclerosis patients. It is located in the small ski resort town of Breckenridge, Colorado. The design concept derives from the contrast between the delicate wildflowers and the rigid mountains of Breckenridge. Specifically the design references the Colorado state flower, the Columbine. It symbolizes endurance and perseverance and was often used by Native Americans for medicinal purposes. Similar to Columbine flowers, Persist aims to be a healing environment for MS patients. Design principles and elements such as repetition, line, contrast, and radial symmetry are utilized throughout the space. Contrast is seen within materials, textures, and colors that reflects the contrast between the mountains and the flowers. Materials that are thought of as heavy, such as wood and stone, are used in a way to make them feel light and airy instead. Spaces that are more private and have lower noise levels have less contrast to create less stress. Spaces that are public and have higher noise levels have more contrast to encourage high energy.

PARTI DIAGRAM The parti diagram started as a circle representing the Columbine flower, and a square representing the mountains. Combined together they create the diagram to the left. The spa is the flower of Breckenridge, surrounded by mountains. The diagram references radial symmetry similar to the symmetry seen within the Columbine flower.
The reception and hallways represent the transition between soft and hard spaces. They have a balance of contrasting materials, colors, and textures. Within the space planning, the repetition of curves allows for smooth transitions between spaces to not overstimulate the users and make the spa easy to navigate. Curtain walls surround the center pool space to create clear sight lines. The acoustic wood panel ceiling feature serves as a wayfinding technique while also highlighting the symmetry of the space.

Exercise Room
MASSAGE ROOM ELEVATION: NTS
The massage room has low contrast to create a calming space for the users. It still uses heavy materials such as wood, but in a way that allows it to feel more light and airy.
The exercise room has high contrast to create a more high energy environment. The walls are textured with acoustic panels as well as the ceiling with wood acoustic baffles and a green ceiling. While being meant to feel like a more rigid space, acoustics are still considered.
Living Room
The residential space utilizes universal design and follows ADA requirements. The public areas such as the living room and kitchen have higher contrast than the private areas such as the master bedroom and bathroom. Stone, wood, and textured wallpapers are used throughout this space as well.
