The word ‘kampong’ means “compound’’ in Malay, while ‘glam’ refers to the long-leaved paperbark tree, commonly found in the area and used for boat-making. The district has a history that dates back to Singapore’s colonial era. Today, the area has evolved into a hub for hip travelers and connoisseurs of culture alike. The hotel is near Haji Lane, a street known for its many shops and restaurants. It is also near public transportation to make traveling around the city easy for guests.

hotel URBAN CONCEPT STATEMENT

Hotel Urban is located at 269 Beach Rd, Singapore in the neighborhood of Kampong Glam. Kampong Glam includes Haji Lane, a street lined with restaurants and boutiques covered with colorful murals. Singapore is known for being a very clean and organized city. While maintaining that cleanliness, this area allows for people to showcase their creativity. The vibrant street art scene is eclectic and bold in nature, yet still maintains a level of organization. The design of the hotel aims to follow that same concept, fun yet organized. Color and lighting that reference the murals and consider the culture in Singapore are used throughout the hotel to delegate various spaces and create various moods. The hotel is aimed mainly towards business travelers since Singapore is one of the most traveled places for business. Because of this, a work cafe is included on the second floor for guest use. The parti diagram follows the organization of the columns to create zones that follow a central path, similar to the path of Haji Lane. The murals of Kampong Glam are geometric, bold, and create points of emphasis. These principles are maintained throughout the design of the hotel.
