Passion, innovation and Swedish craftsmanship In 1979, Kenneth Andersson and Dan Bavholm established Lab.gruppen while working out of a cramped electronics repair shop in Kungsbacka, Sweden. With a knack for creative circuit design and a passion for better sound, they set about developing new audio products – beginning with guitar amplifiers – that soon evolved into highly regarded professional power amplifiers. Within a remarkably short time, Lab.gruppen had built a loyal customer base among leading Swedish sound rental companies. Not content with merely refining existing designs, the founders continually pushed the envelope of audio amplifier design. New technologies boosted output power while at the same time reducing weight and improving reliability under stress. Noteworthy among these developments were the patented Class TD® output stage, Regulated Switch Mode Power Supply™ (R.SMPS), the Intercooler® heat dispersion system, and innovative limiter circuits that tailor amplifier output parameters for optimum performance with the connected load. Unrelenting quality standards Within a decade, Lab.gruppen had expanded to become a major supplier of power amplifiers throughout Europe, and started making significant inroads into the world market. Demand often threatened to outstrip supply, but quality control standards never were compromised in order to increase production levels. With every new product, and at every stage of expansion, Lab.gruppen took pride in maintaining the highest levels of traditional Swedish craftsmanship. Only after a larger and highly efficient manufacturing facility still in Kungsbacka - came online was product distribution fully expanded worldwide.
First drawing of Class TD circuit by Kenneth Andersson
Lab.gruppen continued to build on its foundation in touring sound applications with the pristine sound and bulletproof reliability of the fP Series. With introduction of the FP+ Series Lab.gruppen dramatically boosted power density and added compatibility with NomadLink® network control. Responding to increasing demand from the systems integration market, Lab.gruppen introduced the C Series, a range of multi-channel units designed and fitted for installation applications - also featuring NomadLink control. Lab.gruppen + Lake ®: The ultimate in power and control In 2006, Dolby® Laboratories and Lab.gruppen announced an agreement to incorporate Lake Processing into the forthcoming PLM Series of Powered Loudspeaker ManagementTM systems. The first Lab.gruppen product to incorporate Lake Processing, the PLM 10000Q, was introduced in 2007. When Dolby decided to exit the live sound market, Lab.gruppen acquired both the Lake trademarks and exclusive rights for use of Dolby Lake Processor technology for the touring and permanent sound reinforcement markets. Both divisions are now headquartered in Kungsbacka.

On Tour or Fixed Installation:
Leveraging Advanced Amplifier Technologies The world’s premier touring sound companies rely on Lab.gruppen amplifiers to power massive loudspeaker arrays that blanket audiences of 100,000 and more with high SPL concert sound. At the same time, discerning system integrators rely on Lab.gruppen amplifiers to deliver reliable and costeffective performance for a high energy dance system in a night club or for high-quality speakers beside the video screen in a corporate conference room. Regardless of the scale or application, Lab.gruppen amplifiers draw on a deep reservoir of leading-edge technologies. Following are some key proprietary advancements* that have made Lab.gruppen amplifiers the world standard for sonic excellence, long-term reliability, application flexibility and energy efficiency. Class TD output stage A patented breakthrough that occupied co-founder Kenneth Andersson for two years, Class TD combines the efficiency of Class D topologies with the sonic purity of Class B designs. Because the audio path remains outside the switching portion of the circuit, the signal is free from any filtering ripple effects. Class TD is bridgeable and maintains a flat response with complex loads as low as 2 ohms nominal.
Proprietary Class D output stage For applications demanding less power output, Lab.gruppen developed a patented variant of the Class D output stage. Inherently bridged, the unique design allows asymmetric loading to maximize efficient use of all available output power. Intercooler heat dissipation Thousands of tiny copper cooling fins optimize heat dissipation, while output devices are mounted transverse to air flow to prevent “end of tunnel” heat buildup. Regulated Switch Mode Power Supply (R.SMPS) R.SMPS boosts power output, reduces amplifier size and weight, and ensures full output and undistorted sound even with significant drops in mains voltage. Load optimizing All Lab.gruppen amplifiers incorporate a proprietary limiter circuit to optimize output characteristics for the connected load impedance and type. Although all share the same principle, the implementation and description varies with the amplifier platform, and limiting is in the digital domain in DSP-equipped amplifiers. Fail-safe protection Features to protect both the amplifier and connected loads include DC at output, short circuit, excessive output current, sustained Very High Frequency (VHF) and open load. In high-power models, a Power Average Limiter (PAL) monitors the relationship between the power supply and the mains inlet to prevent service interruptions. *Not all technologies are incorporated in all Lab.gruppen amplifiers.
3
Protect Your Planet; Lower Your Costs Greener into the box Lab.gruppen amplifiers are made with Earth’s future in mind. Our factory in Kungsbacka, Sweden is a model for both energy efficiency and near 100% waste recycling. Lab.gruppen’s environmental practices meet or exceed all Swedish standards, among the strictest in the world. Energy Star ® certification Lab.gruppen’s newest installation amplifier platforms, E Series and LUCIA Series, have been awarded Energy Star certification in recognition of their energy efficiency and innovative design. Both models go into standby mode – drawing less than 1 W – when no audio signal is present for a defined interval; fullpower operation resumes within two seconds after signal is detected at the inputs. The proprietary power supply and output stage technologies achieve overall operating efficiencies of greater than 80%. Matching outputs to loads A power amplifier performs more efficiently when key amplifier parameters are optimized for connected loads. All Lab.gruppen amplifiers feature proprietary technologies that tailor the outputs to the load, either automatically or by hardware or software selection switches. Power output-to-current-draw A meaningful way to evaluate power amplifier efficiency is to look at the ratio of peak output power to AC mains current draw. New Lab.gruppen amplifiers are remarkable in this respect, with the ratio for both the E Series and PLM 20000Q at 400:1 – equivalent to 400 W of output with only 1 A drawn from 110/115 V mains. Lower current draw translates into reduced power distro needs on tours and fewer – if any – backup generators. For installers, it means more amplifiers can be connected to each mains circuit. Avoiding the “energy penalty” With energy costs spiraling upward in most parts of the world, the amount of electricity consumed by an amplifier over its service life must be factored into the total cost of ownership. When electricity costs are factored into the equation, Lab.gruppen amplifiers usually recoup any marginally higher initial costs in a few years when compared to other amplifiers using conventional technologies. Depending on the specific application and on/off cycle periods, many conventional amplifiers will incur electricity costs that exceed the purchase price, where Lab.gruppen amplifiers will avoid this “electricity penalty.”
6
Future Amplifiers Now: Intelligent. Networked. Versatile. At Lab.gruppen, R&D engineers are working with passion and perseverance to keep our amplifier designs one step ahead of future trends. Whether it’s distributed DSP intelligence or networked control and signal distribution, Lab.gruppen are defining future trends with today’s products. DSP amplifiers for all In 2007, we pioneered a new product category when we coupled Lake Processing with a refined power amplifier to create the PLM Series of Powered Loudspeaker Management systems. Now we’ve brought the same concept to a wider market with IPD Series amplifiers. Even our small and highly affordable LUCIA amplifiers have a firmware-controlled DSP input section. Network ready Lab.gruppen’s NomadLink network introduced a higher level of networked monitoring and control for C Series and FP+ Series amplifiers. And with the PLM Series, Lab.gruppen became the first major audio manufacturer to adopt Audinate’s DanteTM audio networking, now the dominant standard for pro audio production applications. And with LUCIA, Lab.gruppen technology anticipates a trend toward decentralized AV systems where streaming digital AV signals are broken out into analog audio only at the location of the video screen or local loudspeaker zone. In such scenarios, LUCIA’s readiness for positioning low-impedence amplification, processing and flexible routing close to the loudspeakers in each zone will result in enhanced audio performance, greater energy efficiency, and overall cost reduction.
7
Lucia: Smaller, smarter, greener
9
Decentralize: Power and features right where you need them Lab.gruppen’s innovative LUCIA (Localized Utility Compact Intelligent Amplification) brings superior audio performance and extraordinary flexibility to a decentralized approach in AV systems design. Power, processing, control and matrixed I/O can be conveniently placed precisely where they are needed, giving you a cost-efficient and scalable solution that often eliminates the complications (and costs) of a centralized equipment room. In many applications, LUCIA also offers an alternative to the sonic compromises of 70/100 V distributed systems with transformers.
Installation savvy LUCIA amplifiers install quickly and easily, with a supplied wall-mount bracket enabling discreet placement behind video displays. Input connectors are both RCA jacks and Euroblock screw terminals, and level setting is available on front-panel potentiometers. An advanced protection scheme safeguards the amplifier and connected loudspeakers from potential damage caused by clipping, thermal overload, or extreme low line voltage. The universal power supply plugs in anywhere in the world. And, finally, standard GPIO connections enable remote control of channel switching and output level as well as integration with paging systems.
Lab.gruppen sound, intact All LUCIA amplifiers incorporate a digital, firmwarecontrolled DSP front end coupled to a robust, durable and highly efficient Lab.gruppen output stage – making them the best-sounding compact amplifiers in this category. The DSP includes a multi-band compressor and look ahead limiter to prevent audible clipping while the proprietary Auto Load Sense™ (ALS) feature ensures optimum performance regardless of load impedance. In sum, the Lab.gruppen philosophy hasn’t changed, only the size of the package.
Green credentials All LUCIA amplifiers are Energy Star qualified, making them an ideal choice for installation in projects seeking ‘green building’ certifications. The amplifiers automatically enter standby mode after a 20 minute period with no signal input, consuming less than 1 watt. Automatic power-up occurs within two seconds after an input signal is sensed, resuming operation of the highly efficient (and patented) Class D output stage. Intelligent fan control further limits power draw and also ensures silent operation at lower power levels.
LUCIA M: All this and more In addition to the above features, the LUCIA 240/2M and 120/2M incorporate significantly enhanced DSP features along with additional I/O flexibility. The DSP adds Automatic Dynamic Loudness ContouringTM (ADLC) (for a fuller sound at lower listening levels) along with per-channel presets for high-pass filters and parametric equalization. Two additional inputs are provided (Euroblock connectors only) which may be routed internally to the amplifier or to the two line-level outputs, also on Euroblock connectors. In many applications, these additional features eliminate the need for outboard processors or matrix mixers. The advanced DSP features are easy to set up using a software wizard, and presets can be quickly configured offline using software editor for loading into amplifiers via the USB port.

E Series: Simple economics, brilliant IDEEA A brilliant IDEEA In designing the new E Series, Lab.gruppen engineers drew upon the cutting-edge amplifier design philosophies developed for the flagship PLM 20000Q, evolving these to create new circuit topologies and control features to meet the demands of 21st century AV installations. The result is a new amplifier platform called IDEEA: IntelliDrive Energy Efficient AmplifierTM. The principal design challenge was maintaining Lab.gruppen’s impeccable sonic performance and robust power output while meeting - or exceeding – the rigorous efficiency requirements of Energy Star 3.0 certification. The challenge was met on two fronts: reducing current draw during operating cycles with vigorous program material and high output levels, and reducing power consumption during non-operational cycles. New power supply and output stage For peak operating efficiency, the E Series incorporates a new high-headroom universal power supply accepting any mains voltage from 70 to 265 V at 50 or 60 Hz. A higher storage capacity
in the power supply prevents excessive draw on the mains inlet during repeated peak bursts, maintaining extra headroom on the supply rails for sustained maximum output with minimal distortion. The Class D output stage is highly efficient (above 90%), while the inherently bridged topology allows up to twice the rated power output on one channel when the other channel is unused or driving a low power application. RSL: Mix, match and balance loads The new Rail Sensing LimiterTM (RSL) is the latest refinement of Lab.gruppen’s proprietary approach to optimizing amplifier output characteristics to match the connected load. Each channel has a two-position switch that sets the output for driving either low impedance or high impedance (70 V) loudspeaker systems, with a +4 dBu sensitivity regardless of load type. RSL works in conjunction with the high headroom power supply and inherently bridged output stage to allow asymmetric loading. Power resources in the amplifier can be utilized to maximum advantage, with one channel producing far beyond its rated output when the other channel has lesser power requirements.
Flexible mode power control To conform with Energy Star requirements, E Series amplifiers offer auto-power-down, which activates when no signal is detected for 20 minutes. Autopower-on is triggered when signal is again present at the input. The GPI-type contact closure can also be used to control the power state as well as external power sequencers if desired. Target: Installation E Series amplifiers are designed for ease of installation and reliable service, with notable features including a 35 Hz high-pass filter (switchable per channel), inputs and outputs on detachable Phoenix-type screw terminals, and a temperature controlled fan that turns off for low-level signals. Comprehensive circuit protection and fault indication also included.

NomadLink: Know all, control all Lab.gruppen’s NomadLink Network offers a bulletproof system for comprehensive monitoring and control of many as 960 FP+ Series or C Series amplifiers with a total of 3840 output channels. To create a NomadLink network, you simply daisy-chain the In and Out network ports of your amplifiers by snapping in standard Cat-5 cables. Then connect the first and last amplifiers to an NLB 60E NomadLink Bridge & Network Controller, forming a loop. That’s it. You’re done. Failure: Not an option In this closed loop topology, NomadLink forms a robust and fully redundant network that is essentially fail-safe. Phantom powering through the loop makes it possible to maintain uninterrupted network communication even when an amplifier in the system is powered off or has AC current disconnected. The NLB 60E functions as a stand-alone unit when needed to provide basic monitoring and control. Large front-panel keys and displays let you power-up
and power-down all networked amplifiers, and also provide “in-the-rack” notification of warnings or faults. However, most users will also use the NLB 60E as an Ethernet-to-NomadLink bridge to remotely access the enhanced feature set of DeviceControl software DeviceControl is a powerful tool for real-time monitoring and control as well as offline system configuration. The flexible GUI allows multi-level monitoring of amplifier status, from at-a-glance fault monitoring of an entire complex to detailed status reports on a single channel. Lake Controller software provides a unified interface for control and monitoring of PLM functions. In addition to controlling all parameters of Lake Processing, the software also provides control and monitoring of exclusive Lab.gruppen features: digital input gain and attenuation, and comprehensive load verification and monitoring via LoadSmart and SpeakerSafe. The Lake Controller software is optimized for a touchscreen tablet PC, and operates on any newer
WindowsŽ PC equipped with an Ethernet interface. Lake Controller v6 has been developed to take full advantage of the current hardware, namely PLM Series and LM Series. A legacy version (5.8) is available for operation of older devices such as Dolby Lake Processors, Lake Contour Pro 26 and Lake Mesa Quad EQ™ processors. The Lake Analyser Bridge also allows seamless integration with third-party, real-time sound system measurement tools, enabling you to perform comprehensive measurement routines and adjust your system EQ at the same time, using the same user interface. This measurement plug-in feature is currently implemented for Smaart as well as Live-Capture Light and Pro.
The PLM Series provides a full range of connectivity for Dante network, AES digital, and analog signals
The global standard for digital processing in live sound In the history of live sound reinforcement, few products stirred as much industry excitement as did the original Lake Processors when they were first introduced more than a decade ago. Simply put, both the core digital processing technology and the graphical user interface represented a quantum leap beyond other systems available at the time. Today, the legacy continues, with Lake Processing incorporated into Lab.gruppen PLM Series of Powered Loudspeaker Management Systems as well as two LM Series stand-alone Lake processors.
Two decades, three continents , one goal In the early 1990’s, three Australian engineers – David McGrath, Brian Connolly and Marcus Altman – formed a new enterprise to develop advanced digital signal processing applications. The Lake name was inspired by a modest pond near their offices in Adelaide. Lake quickly expanded, and following relocation to Sydney, soon developed the Huron Digital Audio Workstation. The DSP architecture of Huron contains advanced proprietary algorithms that were adapted for sound reinforcement applications in future generations of products. In the mid-1990s, the late, great Bruce Jackson – renowned technical innovator and tour sound engineer (Elvis Presley, Bruce Springsteen, Barbra
Streisand) – joined with Lake’s David McGrath to develop a new digital processor for sound reinforcement applications. They set up shop in Santa Monica, California. Renowned tour sound company Clair Brothers, headquartered in Lititz, Pennsylvania decided to back development of the promising new technologies. Clair Technologies LLC was formed in 1997 by Clair, Jackson, McGrath and Ed Meitner to produce the new live sound processors, initially built exclusively for Clair. In 2001, Lake re-acquired the technologies, made further refinements, and introduced them to the wider industry as Lake Contour Pro 26™.Dolby Laboratories (San Francisco, CA) acquired Lake Technologies in 2004. worldwide resources, the Dolby Lake Processor was soon established as the premier DSP platform across the full range of live sound applications. In 2006, Dolby and Lab.gruppen announced an agreement to incorporate Lake processing into the forthcoming PLM Series of Powered Loudspeaker Management systems. The first Lab.gruppen product to incorporate Lake processing, the PLM 10000Q, was introduced in 2007. Early in 2009, Dolby decided to exit the commercial live sound market. Lab.gruppen of Sweden acquired both the Lake trademarks and exclusive rights for use of Dolby Lake Processor technology for the touring and permanent sound
reinforcement markets. Both divisions are now headquartered in Kungsbacka, where intensive research and development efforts have produced refinements to Lake Processing as implemented in the PLM Series as well as two new products, the LM 26 Digital Audio Loudspeaker Processor and more recently the LM 44 Digital Audio System Processor. Today, the pairing of Lab.gruppen amplifier platforms with Lake Processing opens new pathways for the development of completely integrated systems for powering loudspeakers. At the same time, Lake is committed to continued development of stand-alone products that can be seamlessly integrated into any sound reinforcement system.

LM Series processors:
Power and flexibility for any application Lake LM Series digital audio processors offer an unprecedented combination of core processing power, user-friendly control interfaces, and multiformat connectivity. Exclusive LM Series features include proprietary filter algorithms for Lake Mesa and Contour modules along with standard I/O connectivity on analog, AES3 digital and Dante network with programmable automatic failover.
frequency and a 32-bit internal data path. And a universal power supply with detachable locking mains cable allows worldwide use. LM Series processors provide seamless compatibility with Lab.gruppen PLM Series Powered Loudspeaker Management Systems as well as Dolby Lake Processors* and all legacy Lake processors*, with simultaneously accessible from the same Lake Controller Windows-based user interface.
Singular performance, two configurations The Lake LM Series comprises two models, the LM 26 and the LM 44. Other than their different analog and AES3 input/output configurations, both models are essentially identical in performance and features. Both can accommodate either Lake Contour modules for crossover and delay functions, or Lake Mesa EQ for the industry’s most precise, flexible and sonically impeccable equalization functions. Also, both incorporate proprietary Lake processing algorithms for Raised Cosine Equalization, LimiterMax peak and RMS limiters, and linear phase and classic crossovers. Maximum available delay is two seconds.
All connected, all the time LM Series processors are the only products of their kind to offer – as standard – analog, AES digital and dual redundant Dante networked connectivity. There are no separate versions requiring choice of analog or digital, and no extra-cost optional cards to order. With all three connectivity types fully integrated into the core design, LM Series processors can easily function as a Dante break-in/break-out unit while also offering a programmable failover feature and extensive signal mixing and matrixing facilities.
The LM Series’ easily programmable EQ and delay capabilities allow quick reconfiguration for use with either self-powered loudspeaker applications or in multi-way systems using separate power amplifiers. Audio performance is impeccable in every respect, with 24-bit AD/DA conversion, 96 kHz internal sampling

LM Series units also include a 9-pin General Purpose Input/Output (GPIO), configurable via the front panel or Lake Controller. GPIO facilitates external triggering of mute, power control and preset functions as well as reporting of fault and status conditions. * Legacy devices can only be used with Lake Controller 5.8 or older. Not compatible with V6.
Hardware stacking/linking and software cross-configuration Both LM Series processors support stacking/linking of multiple units that enables them to function as a single processor with expanded I/O, for example a 4 × 12 analog I/O configuration (2 x LM 26) or an 8 × 8 I/O configuration (2 x LM 44). Both models can be combined to offer further flexibility. Essentially, this enables users to duplicate functions of now-discontinued Dolby Lake Processors with the same analog I/O configurations – although now enhanced with greater flexibility and redundancy thanks to upgraded Dante connectivity. I/O interconnections between stacked/linked units can be realized using either spare AES or Dante channels. Front panel interface The front panel interface includes dedicated input and output metering for each processing channel, plus dedicated mute buttons (with integral LED status indication) for each processing channel. Parameters are easily adjustable using soft keys and a rotary encoder. The daylight-readable display switches functions for comprehensive metering or to facilitate signal routing or parameter adjustment.
The powerful LM 44 provides Mesa EQ filters and Linear phase crossovers with AES3 connectivity, 4 x 4 analog I/O with Iso-Float and Dante digital audio.
