Ultra-Triathlete Vincenzo Catalano and “Sport Science” Moderator John Brenkus faced off with the challenge of the “Environmental Chamber”. Brenkus, wearing a traditional technical sport shirt, dared to be first. As a part of the trial, he swallowed a tiny high-tech pill to measure his body temperature during the run. Then John Brenkus began to run, although it was extremely difficult since the heating elements made sure the chamber stayed above 50 degrees C. It only took seven minutes for his body temperature to reach 37.8 degrees. Still, he continued to run while his body attempted without success to cool itself with sweat. For running he didn't have much left. After 12 minutes his body temperature reached 38.9 degrees. He was sweating but his shirt didn't do a thing except dissipate the sweat rather than allowing his body to use it effectively. What was next was unavoidable: in the 14th minute of the trial, Brenkus tripped and fell off the treadmill. Powerless and completely drained.

But of course he is a a well-trained extreme athlete while John Brenkus is “just” a decently trained recreational athlete. Would X-BIONIC ® work for him too? To find out, John Brenkus put himself to the test in the environmental chamber one more time. 4,500 watts. More than 50 degrees. John ran. And his body didn't even reach 37 degrees. John Brenkus had also passed the test the second time. And X-BIONIC ®? X-BIONIC® now has one more piece of proof that the technology functions even in extreme situations.

Could X-BIONIC® prove itself? The next trial in the environmental chamber had Vincenzo Catalano outfitted with X-BIONIC®. Vincenzo Catalano ran. And ran and ran and ran. Despite a temperature of 53 degrees Celsius in the chamber, his body core temperature remained under 37 degrees. Vincenzo Catalano could have perhaps kept running for a long time since he, and X-BIONIC ®, passed the test without effort.

Migidio Bourifa waas born in Casablanca in 1969 and grew up in Italy's Bergamo. As a distance runner he started out with distances of 5,000 metres to the marathon, but it was the marathon that awakened his passion. He is coached by Italian runner Massimo Magnani. Bourifa's personal best marathon is 2:09:07, which he achieved at the 2002 Paris Marathon.

Trailrun worldmasters Dortmund, Germany

X-BIONIC does its job in Death Valley, in the Himalayas, and also in Dortmund.

The X-BIONIC® Worldmaster Team for the Trailrun Worldmasters event in Dortmund, Germany, consisted of 37 runners from the X-BIONIC® community. X-BIONIC® outfit the team from head to toe with X-BIONIC® Speed Shirts, Running Pants, Spykers, X-SOCKS® and arm warmers. And that sure came in handy: the race with three demanding stages was held on three days in November with plenty of elevation gain whilst also passing by industrial landmarks as well as covering forest trails. The events began on the first day with a 4.2 kilometer sprint along muddy trails. The very next day the distance race covered 35.2 kilometres and, on Sunday, it covered another 20.5 kilometres. It rained often, the ground was soft, and the temperatures hovered around only 352 | X-BIONIC®

X-BIONIC® protected the runners and kept them strong. The X-BIONIC® products even convinced some sceptics on the team. Some were surprised of the value for runners of the right materials. We were pleased to earn all their positive comments. But honestly? We also kind of expected it.

Every runner on the X-BIONIC® Worldmaster Team was completely outfit with X-BIONIC®. That served them well on the difficult stages with large elevation gains.

0 degrees Celsius. That did nothing to the motivation of the X-BIONIC® Worldmaster Team though. The three days were a hard test for the runners and the X-BIONIC® products. Both however withstood the challenges brilliantly.

On the first night in our bivouac the temperatures dropped to just 6 degrees Celsius. In order to keep myself warm, I pulled on my X-BIONIC ® leg and arm warmers. After the first two stages, the longest of the stages at allegedly 80 kilometres lay before us. But race management decided to lengthen the stage by 11 kilometres to 91 kilometres to make up partly for the the first stage that didn't happen. On Checkpoint 5 I changed out of my X-SOCKS® Speed Metal Energizer for the Run Evolution model. The first ones I valued for their graduated compression and, because of the xitanit, their ability to reflect the sun and disperse excess body warmth outwards. The X-SOCKS® Run Evolution were a good choice due to their double-sock technology. They protected my feet from blisters on the longer section.

On the next day the last 42.195-kilometer stage of this 24th Marathon des Sables was pending. As had happened to the first stage, the actual last stage had been cut. At first everything went great. But then I felt a light twinge in my ankle that by the second checkpoint had developed into a painful swelling. At any other marathon I would have dropped, but at this one I wanted to keep going. I wanted to cross the finish line. Josef stayed by my side because he didn't want to leave me alone in this condition. My ankle hurt like hell. “Everybody has a bad day at the Marathon des Sables”, it's said. But why did mine have to be of all things on the last day of the run? Onward. Step by step I kept running, and the finish line banner got closer and closer. The last metres were now a

reality, and the bitter feelings I had had were gone. We desert foxes beamed. Josef and I crossed the finish line after 200 kilometres. We did it!

What are you left with after such an extreme endeavour? You are left with the realisation that all of the participants were in fact competitors but you nevertheless developed an unbelievable solidarity with each other. And that every single piece of your gear is vital. Would I have been able to master the last stage of the Marathon des Sables without X-BIONIC®? I don't know. But if I had experienced a total depletion on top of the swollen ankle, the finish would have been unattainable. X-BIONIC® had perhaps given me that decisive bit of energy. Many of us became dedicated desert foxes in the desert of Morocco. As an X-BIONIC® Desert Fox, everything goes by far much better.

Monday, 10 a.m.: we started ... finally. On the first day of this athletic challenge I had gotten to know Josef. I had shared a room with him the first night, and he would be staying in my neighbor's tent in the coming days. Just as I was, Josef was fully dressed in X-BIONIC®.
