SLINKY(BOT)

Biogenic Organizational Taxonomies Spyropoulos Design Lab The slinky(bot) behavioural system is an autonomous self-assembly and self-aware design system. It aims to provide an alternative approach for living, that extends on the ideas of materially and geometrically elastic, endless and ever-evolving architecture. The slinkybots are companions in the house that are emotive, and have their independent life cycles that are symbiotically intertwined with the human lifecycle creating an environment that grows and adapts with its users. The system consists of poly-scalar relationships for reasons for functionality and experience. It initiates from the lowest level of organization, the unit scale. Within this scale, concepts of singular entity morphology were researched resulting in a dual-state slinkybot, a compact state and an extended one. The compact state explores mobility and structuring mechanisms, while the extended state introduces concepts of spanning, transparency and a higher level of complexity. The slinkybots are designed to be aware of each other, their surrounding environment, and the human and are able respond at the level of an individual unit and a collective one.

At the aggregation scale, the units collectively work together through different modes of communication to achieve different organizational taxonomies. Across the lifecycle of the slinkybot system, more complex body plans are developed and differentiated for reasons of specialization. They specialize to create functional landscapes, lighting organizations, and sensory habitable spaces that are interactive and playful, living in parallel with the human. At a high population scale, the system addresses space making strategies and reconfigurable frameworks inspired to create an ecology within the Eames House, that represent its original values of playfulness, surprise, iteration, adaptability, and sustainability. These values are reinterpreted, to what we think, corresponds to the technological advancements of our current time.

REDEFINING EDGES Computing Matter PROJECT BRIEF: Through a series of physical model experimentations using plaster and fabric stitching, the relationship between geometry and material behaviour was explored. Getting acquanted with the fabrication and familiarizing with the plaster behaviour was the main aim in the first phase of the workshop. The folds that ocurred several times in the physical models caused the models to become structurally weak. To solve this, the idea of redefining edges emerged.

prototype. Using Rhino and Maya, the module started from the basic form which is plane. The plane was bent to create the fold and replicated to create the structure. (82, M.arch Architecture and Urbanism Course Guide) The model was simulated on grasshopper to identify the expected water flow, and hence the pattern stitching logic. Furthermore, the model was simulated on maya to predict he correlation between the stitching pattern and plaster behaviour.

PROJECT CONCEPT: The logic behind the design was to create the pattern stitching in a way that will strengthen the folds and edges, through directing the plaster through those edges. In the series of final models we created a Team Project with Yuan Yao and Hanbing Zhao

SWARMING AGENCY Encoded Matter PROJECT BRIEF: This workshop involved the use of Processing to create digital simulations related to the swarm behaviour of agents, which were later milled either from images, 3D models, or the actual code (in real-time) using a Roland MDX CNC machine. To translate the designs from digital form to physical model form, programs like ArtCAM and Processing were utilised to produce a string of numbers (coordinates) to send as input as well as allow the control of the CNC milling machine. Initial experimentation involved milling images and 3D models that were produced in Processing and manipulated through ArtCAM, which facilitated the control of the depth of the cut based on color assignment. Later experimentation focused on creating a direct relationship between the digital realm and the physical realm, which meant milling directly from Processing a series of scripts with single or multiple agents being cut in real-time or semi-real-time. This was taken a step further by adding an arduino setup with light sensors that facilitated a feedback-loop between the machine and the digital script. BETWEEN THE LINES PROJECT BRIEF: The following design is an Architecture school, which extends to an existing building in the American University in Cairo campus. PROJECT CONCEPT: The current design of the architecture school in (AUC) doesn’t have an identity. The concept of this project is to shape up the identity of the school and make it stand out. The design breaks into the existing science building to gives a statement. It expresses the uniqueness of the architecture students. The complexity of the form aims to signify the struggle that the architecture student goes through during the years of study, and the sculptural design represents creativity. Moreover, the open plan shows the necessity for interaction and freedom between the students and their studio spaces.

URBAN RESTITCHING GRADUATION PROJECT MASTER PLAN DESIGN

CONCEPT & VISION: PROJECT BRIEF: The following master plan was developed as part of the urban restitching agenda. PROJECT CONCEPT: The location of Mogamaa El Adyan/ old fustat city was chosen because it was detached from the rest of Cairo, and there was a strong need for it to become a historical district due to the value of the different monuments in the area. A full research was done on the area and its surrounding to develop a master plan EXISTING SITE IMAGES VS RENDERS OF VISION that will connect all the different heritage sites together through reviving the lost intangible culture. The master plan was designed by a group of 6, and 6 different projects were proposed.

Master plan designed with Rana Swellam, Norhan Tarek, Amr Tawfik, Karim Abdelrehim, and Youssef Noureldin

“A VIBRANT WALKABLE

DISTRICT, RESTITCHING THE FRAGMENTED TANGIBLE HERITAGE OF MOGAMAA AL ADYAN. THE DISTRICT WILL ACT AS A CATALYST BY INTEGRATING THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES TO RESTORE THE LOST INTANGIBLE CULTURE OF MOGAMAA AL ADYAN.”

EXPERIENCING FOLDS STRUCTURAL DESIGN

PROJECT BRIEF: The following is an architectural exhibition space that represents the architecture school. The model was a scale of 1:1 using only cardboard as a structural element without glue. PROJECT CONCEPT: The exhibition space conveyed the experience of stress through the folds being overpowering in the space where they slowly increase in height to give the user a sense of relief as they experience the space.

A PLACE TO REMEMBER Sustainable Energy Design PROJECT BRIEF: This project aims to tackle the issue of sustainability and create a complex next to the media city which is influenced by it and is accessible to everyone. Team Project with Amr Tawfik & Sarah Salim

PROJECT CONCEPT: The main drive of this project is the people. You should get a different feeling everytime you experience a building. this will help encourage social sustainability along with environmental sustainability. The complex was designed to contain some buildings that move. the main spine in the center is inspired by the nile and the buildings move to represent 2 scenes, the first is the regular scene and the second represents when the nile floods. The movement mechanism will also have an environmental impact. the buildings move to be selfshading, the sustainable trees open and close when they need to, the photovoltaic panels in the mesh store light energy etc..

ELEVATION REDESIGN CONTEXTUAL DESIGN PROJECT CONCEPT: After the full analysis of Klot Beik Street, a modern elevation which didn’t fit in with the old khedivian architecture of the street was selected to be redesigned. Three alternatives were created, one to completely blend with the context, by using the same patterns and proportions. Another to contrast with the existing, however still using the same architectural language and grid. The last was the one that harmonizes with the surrounding by creating

MOOD BOARD OF ARCHITECTURE IN STREET:

something in between the 2 other options. The three elevations were tested and the contrasting one was chosen to be the most appropriate because it fits the culture of today and explains all the layers of history through its unique design.

BLENDING ARCHITECTURE Library and Research Center PROJECT CONCEPT: The library and research center is the transition and link between the community and culture. Therefore it is located between the musuem, opera house and community center. The project is inspired by “SOUR AL AZBAKIYA which was a cultural book fair that took place around azbakiya garden. Therefore, the library aimed to revive this book fair and to create a library that is underground. This will allow minimal effect on the garden, The library is not a traditional one to encourage people to visit it.

The Master plan:

RE-IMAGINING AN URBAN SET UP Urban Design PROJECT CONCEPT: The project is located in an island in

cairo called al warrak. The concept is to created a mixed use project that emphasizes the importance of form generation. The landscape plays a major role in generating the pedestrian walkways which revive the pedestrian culture along the nile. This also creates social interaction.
