I have acquired almost 5 years of professional experience in urban design with exposure to several major projects across the UK, US, and the MENA region where I managed to achieve some remarkable results. Polyblock Gouna, Egypt Sandbox Festival Polyblock aimed to promote unconventional computational architecture in Egypt. Polyblock was showcased in Gouna during sandbox music festival. Sandbox music fetival is an international music festival which takes place every year in May. It attracts people from many different backgrounds. Hence, it was important to introduce an interactive and playful art installation that communicates with all kinds of users. The idea was not only to create a pavilion that stands out but also to educate the users on the whole design, fabrication, and assembly process. One of the main challenges was to create a design that people would relate to and question. Design Concept: Polyblock is a prototypical design. It is made of 2 basic blocks “dodecahedrons�. The design has a bottom up approach to allow maximum flexibility and response to real-time site conditions. The design was developed by a grasshopper algorithm inspired by Frei Otto’s soap bubble experiments and (the weaire phelan algorithm developed) from these experiments. The basic blocks were fabricated initially seperately. Each block with its own unique set of faces which were labeled hollow, patterned, or solid. The solid units used for support were tested for structural stability first and braced. Later on the units were transported on site to be assembled. The installation was designed to have a raw aesthetic using only wood to blend with the desert and beach surrounding. The geometric shapes and patterns were inspired and derived from the culture of the festival in specific and the vibe and culture of Gouna and Egypt in general.

For Jayda Hany, Cairo, Egypt A Concept table designed to convey the strength of Jayda Hany’s shoes. The idea was to create a digitally fabricated playful display to attract passersby in the exhibition to check out the design ofConnector: the shoes. Therefore the table also had to stand out and conConcept Display vey the message of a strong material that has been broken by the strength of the shoes. For FLINC, Cairo, Egypt

THE FACE OF EGYPT JN//DL collaborated with FLINC to represent Egypt in the maker faire Cairo event. The concept was to combine layers of history with design and technology to represent Egypt. Moreover, the idea was to create an educational platform for visitors to understand and learn more about simple fabrication technologies. The concept was to recreate nefertiti’s bust (which is a very familiar symbol) using simple digital design and fabrication tools as shown in the images below.

For Nacelle, Gouna, Egypt VOXELLIZED Voxellized’s idea is simple design a prototypical pod out of personalized cubes for the sandbox festival attendees. The users can personalize their cube and build their units based on instructions on site. Lighting Fixture for Private Resort Abu Dhabi, UAE A lighting fixture with an arabic inspired pattern created using generative tools. The pattern fades out as it approaches the lighting source to create a more ambient light and an interesting shadow patterns.

SLINKY(BOT)

Biogenic Organizational Taxonomies Spyropoulos Design Lab

The slinky(bot) behavioural system is an autonomous self-assembly and self-aware design system. It aims to provide an alternative approach for living, that extends on the ideas of materially and geometrically elastic, endless and ever-evolving architecture. The slinkybots are companions in the house that are emotive, and have their independent life cycles that are symbiotically intertwined with the human life cycle creating an environment that grows and adapts with its users. The system consists of poly-scalar relationships for reasons for functionality and experience. It initiates from the lowest level of organization, 1. the unit scale. The slinkybots are designed to be aware of each other, their surrounding environment, and the human and are able respond at the level of an individual unit and a collective one. At the aggregation scale, the units collectively work together through different modes of communication to achieve different organizational taxonomies. At a high population scale, the system addresses space making strategies and reconfigurable frameworks inspired to create an ecology within the Eames House, that represent its original values of playfulness, surprise, iteration, adaptability, and sustainability. These values are reinterpreted, to what we think, corresponds to the technological advancements of our current time.

The computational communication model which allows slinkybots to communicate and assemble was developed using a particle spring system. The communication model allows the units to form different taxonomies based on the local rulesets specified by the system.

Within this scale, concepts of singular entity morphology were researched resulting in a dual-state slinkybot, a compact state and an extended one. The compact state explores mobility and structuring mechanisms, while the extended state introduces concepts of spanning, transparency and a higher level of complexity.

REDEFINING EDGES Computing Matter PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Through a series of physical model experimentations using plaster and fabric stitching, the relationship between geometry and material behaviour was explored. Getting acquainted with the fabrication and familiarizing with the plaster behaviour was the main aim in the first phase of the workshop. The folds that occurred several times in the physical models caused the models to become structurally weak. To solve this, the idea of redefining edges emerged. PROJECT CONCEPT: The logic behind the design was to create the pattern stitching in a way that will strengthen the folds and edges, through directing the plaster through those edges. In the series of final models we created a prototype. Using Rhino and Maya, the module started from the basic form which is plane. The plane was bent to create the fold and replicated to create the structure. (82, M.arch Architecture and Urbanism Course Guide) The model was simulated on grasshopper to identify the expected water flow, and hence the pattern stitching logic. Furthermore, the model was simulated on maya to predict he correlation between the stitching pattern and plaster behaviour.

SWARMING AGENCY Encoded Matter PROJECT BRIEF: This workshop involved the use of Processing to create digital simulations related to the swarm behaviour of agents, which were later milled either from images, 3D models, or the actual code (in real-time) using a Roland MDX CNC machine. To translate the designs from digital form to physical model form, programs like ArtCAM and Processing were utilised to produce a string of numbers (coordinates) to send as input as well as allow the control of the CNC milling machine. Initial experimentation involved milling images and 3D models that were produced in Processing and manipulated through ArtCAM, which facilitated the control of the depth of the cut based on color assignment. Later experimentation focused on creating a direct relationship between the digital realm and the physical realm, which meant milling directly from Processing a series of scripts with single or multiple agents being cut in real-time or semi-real-time. This was taken a step further by adding an arduino setup with light sensors that facilitated a feedback-loop between the machine and the digital script.

JORDAN NEW CITY PROJECT DESCRIPTION: To alleviate Amman’s congestion and embrace the country’s growing economy and population, the birth of a new Jordanian City, a growth pole, is required; A city defined by strong communities and a high standard of living for all inhabitants. A city that drives investment, invigorates economic growth and generates new employment opportunities. A city that is resourceful, resilient, smart, and looks to the future. The intended relocation of government administrative entities to the new city will act as a nucleus to stimulate economic growth and job creation in related and complementary activities including; ICT, Education, Research and Development (RandD), Health Sciences, Logistics, Retail and Entertainment. DESIGN CONCEPT: The design of the city was built on a poly-centric city design approach which guides an easy phasing strategy for the city. The city was designed with the bottom up approach strategy. The centres acted as attractor points which helped defined the grid. Through various benchmarks of successful cities a unified grid was identified to be the best alternative for a smart city growth pattern. The city is designed with a highly efficient transportation corridor that connects all centres together. QATAR HORTICULTURE EXPO 2021/ Concept Design Only

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A horticulture expo in the heart of Qatar to celebrate the green desert concept and also to invite countries from all around the world to participate in the sustainability themed expo. It will also become a Fifa Fan village in 2022 and later on become a legacy green family park/ lung in the heart of Doha. DESIGN CONCEPT: The initial concept was built around the 10 main components of the program. The model was computational designed to create a grid based on these components which were presented as nodes. A grid of repellers and attractors helped formulate the lines of the grid. The concept design was later on adjusted to fit the client requirements.


Canopy Design for Central Park in The New Administrative Capital of Egypt

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The central park of the New Administrative capital stretches along 10 km. Generative furniture options to create harmony throughout the park were generated. DESIGN CONCEPT: The design of the canopy was driven by the lotus flower which is an ancient Egyptian symbol. The different configurations were designed to provide different shading patterns at different locations and different times showing different canopy configurations of the day. The model was generatedLayout using a grasshopper script and the angles used were used specifically to provide maximum shade.

BETWEEN THE LINES PROJECT BRIEF: The following design is an Architecture school, which extends to an existing building in the American University in Cairo campus. PROJECT CONCEPT: The current design of the architecture school in (AUC) doesn’t have an identity. The concept of this project is to shape up the identity of the school and make it stand out. The design breaks into the existing science building to gives a statement. It expresses the uniqueness of the architecture students. The complexity of the form aims to signify the struggle that the architecture student goes through during the years of study, and the sculptural design represents creativity. Moreover, the open plan shows the necessity for interaction and freedom between the students and their studio spaces.

Socio-cultural Center ‘Inspired by the people, for the people.” PROJECT BRIEF: The following design is a Sociocultural center, designed within a master plan developed to bridge the gap between the community, heritage, and culture. PROJECT CONCEPT: The Sociocultural center serves both the community and the cultural visitors of the fustat area. It serves as a medical center, a library, wedding hall, civic service center, and many adjustable spaces for workshops. It also contains specific cultural corners such as “Beit El she’r.
