It's a Celebration — 57 Years

Special Supplement to The Journal Oct. 7, 2015

Why is there a King George Fall Festival? The Fall Festival is held annually in King George for county organizations (civic, service, religious, fraternal and others), small businesses, crafters and more to work together for the county and its people. Much has changed in the emergency services throughout the years. What started as a Vol. Fire Dept., added a separate Vol. Rescue Squad, combined the two as one volunteer dept. and is now a combined volunteer and full-time department. Donations from the Fall Festival committee continue to be essential to ensure a safe and effective EMS/Fire/Rescue system in the county. These donations

supplement funding from King George County, federal and state grants, ambulance fees for service, memorials, and other donations. Fall Festival donations provide funding for operational costs, such as uniforms for members and help enable volunteers to maintain the emergency equipment, to purchase firefighting protective gear, pagers, building repairs and other costs. The Fall Festival Committee tries to supply a little extra money for these operational cost. In 1959 KGVFD and Dahlgren Rescue Squad received $500. In 1960, they received $650. apiece. So far, over $200,000 in proceeds have been raised and donated to “It’s a Celebration for 57 Years of the King George Fall Festival”

the volunteer Fire and Rescue Departments. All Fire & EMS and Rescue members are forever grateful for the generosity and support of the King George Fall Festival over the years and for its continued sup-

port. As the county has grown, so has the Fall Festival. New ideas are sometimes argued against, but in the long run, new ideas and new events can only make the event grow. From an event that was for the good of fire and rescue, has come an event that is for the good of the county. Parking and fair en-

trance is free. There are food vendors, crafters, small businesses, fun games for kids, live music and best of all a PARADE down mainstreet. (Route 3 through King George). A great day to enjoy the nice weather (held even if it rains), see old friends, make new friends and support our volunteer fire/rescue/ EMS.

Our solutions aren’t off the shelf. They’re from the heart. It seems like so long ago that you could expect great service from your bank…and get it. But in this quantity-over-quality world, most people have given up on expecting more. That’s really what makes Community Bank so special. Here, banking starts with a relationship. So don’t hesitate to expect more here. We’ll be glad to deliver.

Parade Marshal Grant Paulsen

Grant Paulsen is a nationallyrenowned sports broadcaster and journalist who has spent 17-years covering the DC sports scene for various television and radio outlets. He currently hosts a daily sports-talk radio show on CBS Radio's 106.7 THE FAN in DC and provides regular analysis and sports segment for Fox-5 on local television. He also hosts national baseball shows on Sirius XM's MLB Network Radio. Paulsen was born and raised in King George, County. A 2006 graduate of King George High School, Paulsen moved to Fairfax as a teenager to attend George Mason University. After spending four seasons studying communication and focusing on Journalism, the former Foxes football public address announcer was hired by WJFK-FM to cover the Redskins. He worked the daily beat, covering all Redskins practices and flying to all of the team's games. After four years of reporting on the team in the field, Paulsen was promoted to the studio role he currently executes, as the host of the "Grant And Danny" show, which can be heard daily on 106.7 FM locally between 10 am and 2 pm.

On television, Paulsen's current work can be seen exclusively on Fox-5 but in years past the King George native has been seen on WUSA-9 and NBC-4 as well. Paulsen is one of the lead analysts on Fox-5's Sunday morning Redskins pregame shows. He also joins the Fox-5 news programs for reports from all around DC several times a week, routinely broadcasting from Nationals Park, the Verizon Center and Redskins Park. Baseball fans may have heard Paulsen's work on MLB Network Radio, a satellite radio channel which provides baseball content 24 hours a day. Paulsen has long hosted a weekend morning show called "Minors and Majors," while also helping to anchor SiriusXM's baseball coverage from the All Star Game and the League Championship Series in recent seasons. The award-winning broadcaster still comes home to King George to visit family and friends. Currently living in Alexandria, Paulsen's ultimate goal is to become a play-by-play broadcaster on a national level, calling NFL and MLB games for a major network.

Fall Festival Guest of Honor Sue Coleman Susanne Fitzpatrick Coleman came to King George in 1968 with her husband, Howard. She and Howard reside at Cedar Hill and there they raised two children, Scott and Kelly. Sue began working with dogs and training them in the early 1970’s She founded Fancy’s Friends 4-H dog club which recently celebrated its 30th year. Fancy’s Friends Therapy Dog Program was also started years ago and continues to touch the lives of many at Heritage Hall, Mary Washington Hospital, and several King George schools. Sue is a very busy enthusiastic community leader. Sue is an honorary member of the King George Women’s Club, and a member of Saint Anthony’s Church. She and Howard enjoy traveling and visiting with family and friends. Her 4-H students learn a great deal about res-ponsibility, trustworthiness, and respect for themselves as well a others. Sue’s personal dogs have been used throughout the years as project dogs for club members who did

not have a dog. These dogs included the original Fancy, Tucker, Charlie, Clancy, and her latest, Cedar. Dogs are her passion but people are at the heart of her service.

“I would like your vote for King George Commissioner of Revenue”

CAROL WILLIS, MANAGER TOMMY COX, OWNER 540-775-0236 OVER 20 YEARS IN THIS LOCATION 7157 KINGS HIGHWAY, KING GEORGE

COMMISSIONER of the REVENUE Authorized by Judy S. Hart

• I am a dedicated public servant for 25 plus years, first as a bus driver who safely transported young people to school. I’m uniquely qualified to be Commissioner of the Revenue based on my ten years in the King George Commissioner’s office and more than a year in the Spotsylvania’s Commissioner’s office. In both localities I learned the intricacies of supporting local business in areas of Business Licensing, Meals and Lodging Tax, Real Estate, Personal Property and State Income Tax issues as well as the day to day operation of a successful commissioner’s office. • I’m a long time resident who graduated from King George High School in 1977. My husband, David and I have two children. We are active members of Potomac Baptist Church in King George for more than 34 years where I am the Financial Secretary and work each summer with children in Vacation Bible School. • King George County is my home. I know the county well and many of the residents are my friends. I intend to lead the Commissioner’s staff in the highest possible standard of professionalism. I appreciate your support and vote.
