About the Book The environment is made up of everything that surrounds us. It is everything that you can see, touch, hear and smell. Each person is an important part of his/her environment. The things we do in the environment can affect our weather pattern. Our actions therefore; can cause to changes in the climate. This book, ‘Clover Climate Change Handbook’ is designed to expose children 5-8 years to their environment, agriculture and the effects of climate change. The content may be used as a workbook in the class room and used to educate older youth about climate change. These activities are aimed at improving the skill-set of youth and future farmers in a bid to improve agricultural production and productivity.

WHAT IS CLIMATE ?
Ben: What is climate?
Teacher: Climate is the pattern of weather conditions of a location or country (place) for about thirty (30) years. It is the weather that is expected at a special place at a special time of the year. Climate maybe Tropical, Dry or Polar

Weather is what you SEE, HEAR, or FEEL right now. Therefore, it is the day to day changes in the weather pattern. Climate however, is more than just one (1) or two (2) rainy days. Climate is the pattern of weather conditions of a location or a country (place) for about thirty (30) years. It is also the weather that is expected at a special place and at special time(season) of the year.

28 NEW 4H CLUBBOOK.indd 30
Circle the things that are different in pictures 1 &2. The picture shows how the CLIMATE differs over thirty (30) years. This is called CLIMATE CHANGE
12/8/21 7:18 AM
What is CLIMATE CHANGE? Climate Change describes the changes in the earth’s climate pattern. This change creates new weather patterns that last for many years. Climate Change also refers to the rise in temperatures on the earth’s surface, which shows that the earth is getting warmer. Changes in the climate shows that we will have more weather events, less rain (more droughts), heat, heavy storms, or even a lot of rainfall causing floods and rising sea levels. These events will pose new risks/problems which will affect living things (people, plants and animals) in all parts of the world.
Activity 5
The primary cause of climate change is the burning of oil and coal, which sends off gases into the air, one of which is called carbon dioxide. Other human activities, such as agriculture and cutting down of trees (deforestation), also causes Climate Change.
Look at the picture and write 2 sentences to describe what you see.
29 NEW 4H CLUBBOOK.indd 31
12/8/21 7:18 AM
What are the effects of Climate Change?
The effects of climate change include: 1. a change in rain and snow patterns, 2. stronger storms, 3. less rainfall (causes drought) 4. hotter days (higher temperatures) , 5. wildfire, 6. rising sea levels, 7. damages to coral Small increases in the earth’s temperature has gone up over the past 30 years and is expected to continue to rise over the years. This may affect health, habitats, homes, and lives; heat waves may cause some things to die. This may result in less food for humans and animals to eat.
30 NEW 4H CLUBBOOK.indd 32
12/8/21 7:18 AM
CLIMATE CHANGE AFFECT LIVING THINGS?
Plants
Animals
Humans
The earth gets warmer, as the temperature rises. This may cause some, 1. plants and animals to die due to hot spells and little or no rainfall, and, 2. animals also move away to cooler areas for survival. Sometimes you will also see pests crawling around, eating up fruits and vegetables. When plants/crops and animals die; humans are left with little or no food to eat, so they too may die.
NEW 4H CLUBBOOK.indd 33
31 12/8/21 7:18 AM
Whenever there is less rainfall than normal it can causes a shortage of water in homes or on the farms. This is called a drought. A drought can last for weeks, months or years. If there is no rainfall for fifteen (15) days or more, you can say we are having a drought. Crops and or plants and animals need water to grow, and some animals need it for their habitat/home.
Heavy rainfall is the amount of rainfall gathered in one (1) day. Whenever the land starts to hold all the water on the ground, the water starts to build up in one place, which may cause rivers to rise over their banks. This is called a Flood. A Rain Gauge is used to measure the amount of rainfall at a specific location.
32 NEW 4H CLUBBOOK.indd 34
Rain Gauge
12/8/21 7:18 AM
Plants, Animals and People need special climate conditions that will allow them to survive.
Climate change also affects our environment and natural resources and affects the way people live. For example: • Warmer temperatures may cause heat waves, which can pose health problems for young children and the elderly.
Plants
•
Climate change can also affect human health by damaging the air and water quality, increasing the spread of certain diseases.
• Rising sea levels may also Humans
affect people living near the sea and plants and animals in wetlands (ecosystem).
•
Changes in rainfall patterns and the amount of rainfall can affect water supplies and water quality. This can also affect living things.

Yes, I know our environment has changed Teacher
How do you know?
Ben
If you look around you can see a lot of different things happening. Remember, a lot of trees were across the road and Mr. John cut them down to build his supermarket; it makes the place look different. That is why I know that our environment is changing.
Changes in the Environment Some changes in the environment happen because of the way people live and the things they do to the environment. These are called man-made activity. Some changes are however natural. These activities can range from the gradual erosion of rocks to form caves by the seas, to greater occurrences like Natural Disasters. Whether they be gradual or forceful, we cannot do anything about Natural activities.
34 NEW 4H CLUBBOOK.indd 36
12/8/21 7:18 AM
NATURAL ACTIVITIES that affect the environment (somethings we cannot control)
Flood
A Flood is an overflow of a large amount of water beyond its normal limits, especially over what is normally dry land. This is usually the result from days of heavy rain which sometimes causes houses to be destroyed, rivers overflowing their banks and roads and bridges being completely covered.

Volcano
Volcanoes are like small mountains. There is a hole at the top called crater. A volcano is caused when a mountain opens downwards to a pool of molten rocks below the earths’ surface, from which molten rocks and gas becomes active. This is called Lava.
37 NEW 4H CLUBBOOK.indd 39
12/8/21 7:18 AM
Effects of Natural Disasters on the Environment Floods, Earthquakes and Volcanoes are all Natural Disasters; they may cause damages to: Non-Living things such as roads, bridges, buildings (homes, shops) thereby disrupting the lives of people, causing them to become homeless or have no jobs. Living things such as plants and animals and humans. Poisonous gases from a volcano for example, can kill living things (animals, plants and human) or make crops/plants unhealthy for animals or people to eat. Natural disasters can also cause death to humans and animals and wipe out plants and crops needed for day to day living. Both Man-Made and Natural Disasters causes our environment and our Climate to Change.

outside is very hot.
Ben:
But last week we had PE outside. Do you remember what Mrs. Brown said in 4-H Club last week about Climate Change?
No, what did she say? She said, “our climate is changing, that means the time is going to get very hot.”
So, what is going to happen to our garden? The plants are going to die, and we will not have enough food to eat.
Teacher Mrs. Brown
Let us go and talk to Mrs. Brown to see what we can do to protect our garden

Lets’ Talk about Climate Change and how it can affect Agriculture/ Farming
12/8/21 7:18 AM
Climate Smart Agriculture Agriculture is the practice of farming. Farming is when a person plants crops and raise animals. This person is called a Farmer. The farmers plant crops to provide us with food and other materials such as wool for us to survive.
As the earth gets warmer it means there will be less rainfall than normal. This type of climate will affect the plants and animals. Some crops or plants cannot live or survive in a warm climate so they may die. Warmer climates will also affect the type and quality of food and the amount of food we will have to eat. During Climate Change we will see more insects and pests crawling around eating our crops leaving us with little or no food to eat.
41 NEW 4H CLUBBOOK.indd 43

We can practice “ClimateSmart Agriculture”.
Teacher
Mrs. Brown
Tess:
What is Climate- Smart Agriculture?
What is Climate-Smart Agriculture? Climate-Smart Agriculture is a set of different activities that farmers can use to help them to better take care of their farms and animals so that people can get more food to eat. These activities help farmers change their actions and behaviours in agriculture/farming in response to the changing climate. Some farmers may use simple or complex machines or technology on their farms. These simple machines will help to make the work easier and take less time, and the farmer will also get more food from his/her crop. Some machines may also help with providing much needed water during times of drought, while others may help with preventing the washing away of soil during times of flooding. Also, some farmers may consider switching to crops that can survive in the changing climate.

Drought- is when an area gets less rainfall than normal, Plants - are living things that cover much of the land. over months or even years. If there is no rainfall for fifteen (15)days or more you can say we are having a Drought.
Earth - is our home, it is the third planet from the sun.
It is the only planet known to have air (oxygen), water (ocean) on its surface and, of course, life. Earth is the fifth largest of the planets in the solar system.
Environment - All our surroundings on Earth are
called the environment. It is all you can see, hear, feel and smell. It includes Living things (people, animals and plants) and Non-living things. Living things rely on the non-living parts of the environment to survive.
Farm - is a piece of land used to grow crops and/or
raise animals. People who grow these plants or raise these animals are called farmers. This type of work is called farming.
You see them everywhere. They include grass, trees, flowers etc. Plants do not move from place to place like people or animals do.
Rain Gauge - a Rain Gauge is used to measure the amount of rainfall at a place.
Recycle - is an activity to collect waste or garbage and use them to make useful products. Glass, paper, plastic, dead plants, fruit and vegetable scraps can be recycled through composting.
Temperature - tells how hot or cold a person or place
is.Weather Temperature - tells how hot or cold a place is. A thermometer is used to measure temperature.
Volcano - a Volcano is caused when a mountain opens

Summary Jamaica and the world are affected by Climate Change activities. Climate Change affects our environment and natural resources and affects our way of life in many ways. Increased weather conditions expose us to new risks, which will affect all living things (people, animals and plants/crops). Climate Change also affects the amount of food that humans and animals will have to eat. It is our duty to prepare for some of the likely climate change impacts to reduce their effect on plants, animals and humans. We can start by adapting to Climate-Smart Agricultural activities. Plant crops that can survive during hot weather conditions, save more water, protect our rivers, sea and gullies and eat more locally grown foods. Cubbies, Youth and Adults must become Agriculture Smart (Agri-Smart) to reduce the effects of weather/climate change on our crops/plants, animals and humans.
Plant a tree today!
