There is something sinister and disturbing in the ambiguous beings that are born from the pencil of Jill Tegan Doherty, yet it is hard to look away from her canvases, as if a magnetic force was pushing us to ask ourselves what the images could mean. A fox in the guise of a baby, a horse with the doll’s body, a wooden-eared hare that supports the weight of a thousand coloured pencils.

It is from the real mental short-circuits and the fascination with the reflections of the human subconscious that this young British artist, not yet thirty years old draws her inspiration. She grew up in Nottingham, graduated from Chelsea College of Art and Design in London, and in just over year projected onto the art scene in Berlin, where her second solo exhibition entitled “Nothing was put in place to stop the growth” is now taking place.

Until 8 February it will be possible to see the artist and her works live in the Porcelaingres showroom space, where twelve paintings and two series of drawings explore the concept of growth in psychological terms: the growth of feelings, the growth of expectations, the growth of fears and uncontrolled thoughts that undermine the certainties of the human being, bringing up all its frailty.

The aesthetic of Jill for naive traits is expressed by means of hybrid creatures, in which the animal form becomes a metaphor for the primary instinct in each of us, that grey area of our personality that remains largely silenced, and to which the artist gives a voice through a zoomorphic imaginary, imprinting it on the canvas like a mirror of our own idiosyncrasies.

C’è qualche cosa di sinistro e inquietante negli esseri ambigui che nascono dalla matita di Jill Tegan Doherty, eppure è difficile distogliere lo sguardo dalle sue tele, come se una forza magnetica ci spingesse ad interrogarci su che senso abbiano quelle immagini. Una volpe con le sembianze di un bebé, un cavallo con il corpo di bambola, una lepre dalle orecchie di legno che sorregge il peso di mille matite colorate. È proprio dai cortocircuiti mentali e dalla fascinazione per i riflessi del subconscio umano che nasce l’ispirazione di questa giovane artista inglese non ancora trentenne, cresciuta nella contea di Nottingham, diplomata al Chelsea College of Art and Design di Londra, e da poco più di un anno proiettata sulla scena artistica berlinese, dove è ora in corso la sua seconda mostra monografica dal titolo “Nothing was put in place to stop the growth”. Fino all’8 febbraio sarà possibile conoscere dal vivo l’artista e le sue opere nello showroom dello spazio Porcelaingres, dove dodici dipinti e due serie di disegni esplorano il concetto di crescita in termini psicologici: crescita dei sentimenti, crescita delle aspettative, crescita delle paure e dei pensieri incontrollati che minano le certezze dell’essere umano portando a galla tutta la sua fragilità.

L’estetica di Jill dai tratti naïf si esprime per mezzo di creature ibride, in cui la forma animale diventa metafora dell’istinto primario di ognuno di noi, di quella zona d’ombra della nostra personalità che rimane per lo più in silenzio, e a cui l’artista dà voce attraverso un immaginario zoomorfo, imprimendolo sulla tela come specchio delle nostre idiosincrasie.

The completely personal vision of Raphael Hauber, in constant balance between geometrical rigour and a lively Dadaist verve.

La visione tutta personale di Raphael Hauber, in costante equilibrio tra rigore geometrico e una verve vivacemente dadaista.

A surreal background made up of graphical mazes, flying fish and giant botanical posters.

In the foreground, the Avatar creatures of Raphael Hauber, fallen into a dreamlike dimension and stripped of the stereotypes of contemporary dress.

Man or woman, there is no difference, their clothing is hybrid, exchangeable, decomposable, conceived as an idea to wear. The aesthetic of this German designer is, in fact, out of the ordinary and dedicated to maximum originality, driven by the belief that fashion is in a perpetual state of flux, the result of the singular sensitivity of an individual who creates it and who wears it. The extreme linearity of the silhouettes contrast with patterns teeming with colour, with flocks of pink flamingos and tropical birds ready to upset the most classic of shirts or casual five-pocket trousers.

Because the intent is not to reinvent the individual garments, but rather develop unique combinations by associating seemingly dissonant form and content.

Not surprisingly, then, you can generate the most beautiful harmony from the union of discordant notes.

Uno sfondo surreale, fatto di labirinti grafici, pesci volanti e gigantografie botaniche. In primo piano, le creature Avatar di Raphael Hauber, calate in una dimensione onirica e spogliate dagli stereotipi del vestire contemporaneo. Uomo o donna, non c’è alcuna differenza, il loro abbigliamento è ibrido, scambiabile, scomponibile, concepito come un’idea da indossare. L’estetica di questo designer tedesco, infatti, è fuori dall’ordinario e votata alla massima originalità, mossa dalla convinzione che la moda sia in perenne divenire, frutto della singola sensibilità di chi la crea e di chi la veste.

All’estrema linearità delle silhouettes si contrappongono fantasie brulicanti di colore, con stormi di fenicotteri rosa e uccelli tropicali pronti a sconvolgere la più classica delle camicie o il pantalone informale a cinque tasche. Perché l’intento non è reinventare i singoli indumenti, quanto piuttosto sviluppare combinazioni uniche associando forme e contenuti apparentemente dissonanti. Non a caso, infatti, dall’unione di note discordi si genera la più bella armonia.

Due mondi oggettivamente estranei, due culture radicalmente distanti, un giovane designer che fa tesoro di queste peculiarità proponendo uno stile inedito, fresco, che potremmo definire “urban-zen”.

Laend Phuengkit nasce a Zurigo, ma il suo sguardo dagli occhi a mandorla rivendica con orgoglio origini asiatiche.

Un patrimonio infinito di tradizione e concettualità che lo stilista riversa a pieno nelle sue creazioni, fatte di impeccabili drappeggi, tagli a kimono, volumi over e tessuti raw dalla mano consistente, eco delle uniformi da lavoro orientali di un tempo.

Two objectively unfamiliar worlds, two radically distant cultures, a young designer who takes advantage of these features, proposing a new, fresh style, that we might define as “urban-zen.”

Laend Phuengkit was born in Zurich, but his almond-eyes proudly claim his Asian origins. An infinite wealth of tradition and conceptuality that the designer pours in full into his creations, made with flawless drapes, kimono cuts, oversize volumes and consistent raw materials, an echo of the former Eastern work uniform. The cosmopolitan style of Laend overlaps with this matrix zen background, a Nordic taste in the choice of colours and unusual combinations between shades, a clear passion for graphics and shapes with a contemporary appeal.

“Silent city of...” is the title of his SS/2013 collection, a choice that once again denotes the urban component of his fashion, but at the same time exhibits a thoughtful understated style. After the dazzling debut at Berlin Fashion Week in 2011, the success of Studio Laend Phuengkit was legitimised by the “Swiss Design Award” and seems destined to a promising rise beyond the borders of the continent.

by Closed. Not that the brand needs any introduction, given its illustrious curriculum and the pioneer in the creation of the first stone washed jeans in history, over thirty years ago. But long gone are the years when this company was simply known for its jeanswear: today Closed is in fact the symbol of a lifestyle, a way of understated and refined dressing, a connoisseur of the minimal taste and spokesman for an easy, wearable style, which focusses entirely on the quality of the materials and on the know-how able to take advantage of both the richness of its own archives, and the innovative power of a communication that always finds itself at the forefront.

From this DNA, the women’s SS/2013 collection comes to life, freely inspired by the Mod style and youth subcultures that used to animate the coolest areas of ‘60s London. Polo collars, tapered trousers and the essential parka are the hallmarks of the typical Brit look that can be found in the Closed wardrobe offered to women, brought up to date in the choice of new combinations of material, with floral prints and well-balanced flashes of bright colour. Three new creations make their entrance into the sector from the waist down, including retro items such as the high waist and stronger details like the zip at the calf. The slogan “Adopt, Adapt, Improve” was once the concept of reference for the Mod culture, and today it is the perfect paradigm that guides Closed towards the constant search for new inputs and increasingly ambitious goals.

Non che il marchio abbia bisogno di presentazioni, visto il suo illustre curriculum e il primato nella creazione del primo jeans stone washed della storia, oltre trent’anni fa. Ma sono ormai lontani gli anni in cui quest’azienda veniva connotata semplicemente per il suo jeanswear: oggi Closed è infatti simbolo di uno stile di vita, un modo di vestire understated e raffinato, cultore del gusto minimal e portavoce di una moda portabile, easy, che punta tutto sulla qualità dei materiali e su un know-how capace di sfruttare tanto le ricchezze del proprio archivio, quanto la forza innovativa di una comunicazione sempre all’avanguardia.

Da questo dna prende vita la collezione femminile PE/2013, liberamente ispirata allo stile Mod e alle subculture giovanili che animavano i quartieri più cool della Londra anni ’60. Fairy tale and Noir meet in the dream world of the line designed by Ilaria Nistri, between dark atmospheres and volatile asymmetries.

Fiaba e Noir si incontrano nel mondo onirico della linea disegnata da Ilaria Nistri, tra atmosfere dark e volatili asimmetrie.

It is the nocturnal atmosphere of the films of Tim Burton that permeates the Roque line by Ilaria Nistri, the spin-off collection born from the hand of the designer who cleverly combines the dark taste of printed leather with the fluidity of the lines, favouring the textures of impalpable, ethereal fabrics, ready to rest on the body with the lightness of a feather. Owls and ravens, symbols par excellence of mystery and darkness, are the graphics that accompany the collection, in a mash-up of placed prints that recall eyes, feathers, wings, networks and wire cages with their macro magnification.

T-shirts and oversized dresses speak the language of versatility: like pieces of a surrealist mosaic to be all assembled, the pieces of the Roque wardrobe play with the geometry of square shapes, with square corners and rounded edges, to create imponderable asymmetries and unexpected overlapping in a neo-grunge style. Neutral and dusty, the base notes of this total look live in complete harmony with its twilight appeal, interrupted by vibrant bursts of orange and fuchsia ready to strike the torrid summer skies with their electric charge. È l’atmosfera notturna delle pellicole di Tim Burton a permeare la linea di Ilaria Nistri intitolata Roque, la collezione spin-off nata dalla mano della designer che coniuga sapientemente il gusto dark della pelle imprimé con la fluidità delle linee, prediligendo le textures di tessuti eterei, impalpabili, pronti a poggiarsi sul corpo con la leggerezza di una piuma. Gufi e corvi, simboli per eccellenza di mistero e oscurità, sono gli elementi grafici che accompagnano la collezione, in un mash-up di stampe piazzate che richiamano, con i loro macro ingrandimenti, occhi, piumaggi, ali, reti e gabbie metalliche. T-shirt e abiti oversize che parlano il linguaggio della versatilità: come tessere di un mosaico surrealista tutte da assemblare, i pezzi del guardaroba Roque giocano con la geometria di forme squadrate, con angoli retti e spigoli smussati, fino a creare imponderabili asimmetrie e inattese sovrapposizioni di gusto neo-grunge. Neutre e polverose, le note di fondo di questo total look vivono in piena sintonia con il suo appeal crepuscolare, interrotte da vibranti fiammate di arancio e fucsia pronte a folgorare i torridi cieli estivi con la loro carica elettrica.

From work wear to… work of art. The denim’s path to consecration is a one-way trip made of craftsmanship, tradition, glory, dark years, unexpected and lucky repêchages combined over time to bring about its icon status in past and present wardrobe; symbol of rebellion par excellence, “democratic” garment playing the main role in the stylistic imagination of entire generations.

Denim has endless transforming possibilities and it’s like no one else capable of embodying modernity through both evolutional and involutional metamorphosis, though maintaining its own identity.

Free from the work wear boundaries, denim gains today new worthiness and renovated appeal which make it lead the most important textile fairs and be the favourite subject for fashion conferences, academic events and specialized publications. A special mention is owed to one among the most recent books – “Denim: una storia di cotone e arte” (“Denim: a history of cotton and art”), an essay on this fabric’s genesis and transformation written by the journalist Giulia Rossi. The story grows through the author’s words and Roman photographer Viviana Berti’s pictures; moreover, curator Melissa Proietti’s choice of giving to the whole project an itinerant feature makes it even more up-to-date. This little precious pamphlet, published by Fashion Illustrated, points not only towards fashion- and photojournalism, but speaks to the ensemble of creativity world, also thanks to those eminent participations feeding the project at every stage of its life; the most recent being, chronologically speaking, Elio Fiorucci’s during the book launch at W Concept Store in Milan.

The increasing interest from the fashion system’s side towards denim seen as a mass and lifestyle phenomenon is the strongest attraction for thousands of people visiting the “Blue Jeans” exhibition, held at the Utrecht Centraal Museum until March, 10th 2013. The whole show is aimed at celebrating jeans from the origins up to today in whatever shape, from creative to social and commercial, moving along luminous installations, 3D pictures and memorable patterns which contributed in making this garment an absolute evergreen, or perhaps we should better say an “everblue”.

There obviously needs to be, then, besides XVII century work uniforms, some iconic items taking an active part in glorifying the fabric, like the first-ever laser engraved pants by maison Marithé et François Girbaud, as well as Elwood jeans, a G-Star bestseller. The Dutch group itself, undisputed leader in denim clothes production, has also conceived a travelling museum dedicated to jeans, launched on May at the new flagship store in Cannes, which migrates from nation to nation and stops over the brand’s most illustrious stores.

The leading role in the exhibition is played by the Raw Art Series, a collection of high level craftsmanship items presented as collectible art objects, true must-haves for that denim community which seems to attract new enthusiastic followers every day.

Da capo da lavoro a… capolavoro. Il percorso del jeans verso la consacrazione è un viaggio di sola andata, fatto di artigianalità, tradizione, gloria, anni bui, ripescaggi fortuiti e fortunati che, di epoca in epoca, hanno contribuito a renderlo icona indiscussa del guardaroba di ieri e di oggi, simbolo per eccellenza di ribellione, indumento ‘democratico’, protagonista dell’immaginario stilistico di intere generazioni. Un tessuto dalle mille anime, il denim, capace come nessun altro di farsi interprete della modernità, mutando e cambiando pelle attraverso evoluzioni e involuzioni, pur mantenendo sempre la propria identità. Sdoganato dall’ambito workwear, oggi il denim acquista nuove valenze e un rinnovato appeal che lo portano a diventare il leader delle più importanti fiere del settore tessile, oltre che il tema prediletto di simposi di moda, eventi accademici e pubblicazioni specifiche. Tra i volumi più recenti spetta una menzione particolare al libro “Denim: una storia di cotone e arte”, saggio sulla genesi e la metamorfosi di questo tessuto scritto dalla giornalista Giulia Rossi.

Un racconto che si sviluppa attraverso le parole dell’autrice e le immagini della fotografa romana Viviana Berti, reso ancora più attuale dalla connotazione itinerante scelta per l’intero progetto dalla curatrice Melissa Proietti. Questo piccolo e prezioso pamphlet, edito da Fashion Illustrated, non si rivolge solo al giornalismo di moda e di fotografia, ma al mondo della creatività a tutto tondo, grazie anche agli autorevoli interventi che arricchiscono il progetto ad ogni nuova tappa; ultimo, in ordine cronologico, il contributo di Elio Fiorucci durante la presentazione del libro al W concept store di Milano.

L’interesse crescente da parte del fashion system nei confronti del denim come fenomeno di costume e lifestyle è la scintilla che sta muovendo l’interesse di migliaia di visitatori verso la mostra “Blue Jeans”, in scena al Centraal Museum di Utrecht fino al 10 marzo. Un’intera esposizione per celebrare il jeans dalle origini ad oggi in tutte le sue forme, da quelle artistiche a quelle sociali e commerciali, tra installazioni luminose, quadri in 3-D e modelli storici che hanno contribuito a rendere questo indumento un evergreen assoluto, o forse sarebbe opportuno dire un “everblue”.

Non potevano mancare, quindi, oltre alle divise da lavoro risalenti al XVII secolo, alcuni esemplari iconici che hanno contribuito alla glorificazione di questo tessuto, come i primi pantaloni lavorati al laser dalla maison Marithé et François Girbaud e i jeans Elwood diventati uno dei best-seller in casa G-Star. Proprio il gruppo olandese, leader incontrastato nella produzione di capi in denim, è anche l’ideatore di un museo del jeans itinerante che ha visto il suo lancio nel mese di maggio all’interno del nuovo flagship store di Cannes e che migra di nazione in nazione facendo tappa nei punti vendita più prestigiosi del brand. Protagonista dell’esposizione, la Raw Art Series, una raccolta di pezzi ad alto tasso di artigianalità presentati come oggetti d’arte collezionabili, pezzi ‘must have’ per quella denim community che sembra acquisire ogni giorno nuovi entusiasti followers.

Last November 16 more than a thousand people attended the prémière of a store determined to change the face of Milan forever: the first space for Deus Ex Machina. Presented during the week of EICMA, the motorcycle fair, this event gave the opportunity to people of the star system, experts, journalists and fans to get to know one of the coolest new meeting places in the city, within the Isola neighbourhood, in via Thaon of Revel. Deus Ex Machina is a brand born in Australia in 2006, specialised in the production and sale of motorcycles, surfboards and bicycles. Apparently very disparate worlds, but united by a common thread: the inclination for life “en plein air”, as well as a certain instinct towards thrill-seeking.

A passion for creativity and uniqueness of the products, together with a constructive ability with an artisan taste has meant that these workshops in the world of Deus, known as the “Temples of enthusiasm”, have met with sensational results on a global scale. The infectious enthusiasm has contributed to the success of sales outlets born out of the Australian experience: Bali and Los Angeles. Now, for the European debut, it will be the turn of Milan to show that it cannot be outdone by its renowned predecessors. The Milan space, created in the first Italian “Moto-Town”, will aim to establish itself not only as a selling point but also as a social phenomenon, identifying itself as a meeting point for people with different styles, but with the same idea of life. For this reason, “Deus Café” has been set up as a meeting place and beating heart of the initiatives within the structure. At the D.E.M. store you can admire and buy the products of the brand, motorcycle icons such as “Grievous Angel” or “Street Tracker”, as well as the bikes fitted out with a surfboard carrier and huge fat tyres, next to with the more radical fixed gears on the Cinelli frame.

Last but not least, the beautiful surfboards made in Bali for lovers of the highest and longest waves on the planet. The project also includes a line of clothing and accessories that enjoyed immense success on the opening night, thanks to the uniqueness and impact of the creative graphics. With a visit in January, after the opening, make sure it will not be the only one.

Più di mille persone sono accorse, lo scorso 16 Novembre, alla prémière di uno store deciso a cambiare per sempre il volto di Milano: il primo spazio Deus Ex Machina. Presentato durante la settimana di Eicma, il salone del motociclo, questo evento ha dato la possibilità a personaggi dello star-system, addetti ai lavori, giornalisti e semplici appassionati di conoscere uno dei nuovi punti d’incontro più cool della città, all’interno del quartiere Isola, in via Thaon di Revel. Passione per la creatività e unicità delle produzioni, insieme ad un’abilità costruttiva di gusto artigianale hanno fatto sì che questi laboratori del mondo Deus, conosciuti come i “Templi dell’entusiasmo”, abbiano riscosso risultati clamorosi a livello planetario. L’entusiasmo contagioso ha contribuito al successo dei punti vendita nati dopo l’esperienza australiana: Bali e Los Angeles. Adesso, per il debutto europeo, toccherà a Milano dimostrare di non essere da meno rispetto ai suoi blasonati predecessori. Lo spazio milanese, nato all’interno della prima Moto-Town italiana, punterà a radicarsi non solo come punto vendita ma anche come fenomeno sociale, identificandosi come il punto di ritrovo per persone diverse nello stile, ma con la stessa idea di vita. Per questo è stato allestito il “Deus Caffè”, luogo aggregativo e cuore pulsante delle iniziative realizzate all’interno della struttura. Al D.E.M. store si potranno ammirare e acquistare le produzioni del marchio, icone motociclistiche come le “Greivous Angel” o la “Street Tracker”, nonché le bici dotate di porta tavola da surf ed enormi copertoni fat, accostate alle più radical fixed su telaio Cinelli. Dulcis in fundo, le splendide tavole da surf realizzate a Bali per gli amanti delle onde più alte e lunghe del pianeta.

Il progetto prevede anche una linea di abbigliamento e accessori che hanno riscosso immenso successo nella serata inaugurale, grazie all’unicità e all’impatto creativo delle grafiche.

THE ENERGY IS GOOD

Rory Wykes and Michael Smith draw their inspiration from the post-punk/New Wave of David Bowie and the Police for their men’s collection for Spring / Summer 2013, called THE Energy Is Good.

The sharing of values such as creative independence and a generous spirit has guided these two bright individuals to conceive the brand Smith-Wykes, whose refined aesthetic and extreme attention to details, in the words of Rory Wykes, “compliment, rather than obscure the nature of the individual”. Wykes refines the skills of designers in the most prestigious fashion houses of Paris (Lacoste and Carven), Berlin (Aem’kei) and the United Kingdom (Baracuta); Smith develops his strong propensity for business between New York and Paris. Both are fascinated by the liaison between music and fashion, and arrive through an image, a song, at the creation of a “film” world in which to animate their creations. Presented last summer in the most important city of fashion, as well as in Florence during Pitti Uomo, the collection starts from the base tones of white, black and lunar grey, proceeding on to aqua blue and bright pink. The shirts are made, printed, and worn under an unconstructed double-breasted blazer; the classic Tshirt is updated with over-dyeing faded by the sun and contrasting details in flatlock stitch. For the evening, classical textures such as honeycomb intertwine with modernity in a soft double-breasted cardigan. The whole collection reflects a sense of light and simplicity, interrupted and enhanced by dark contrasts and graphic patterns.

Presentata la scorsa estate nelle più importanti città della moda, oltre che a Firenze durante Pitti Uomo, la collezione parte dai toni base del bianco, nero e grigio lunare per svolgersi nei blu acqua e rosa brillanti. Le camicie sono operate, stampate, e si indossano sotto blazer doppio-petto decostruiti; le T-shirt classiche si aggiornano con sovratinture scolorite dal sole e dettagli contrastanti in punto flatlock. Per la sera, trame classiche come il nido d’ape s’intrecciano con la modernità nel morbido cardigan doppiopetto. Tutta la collezione rispecchia un senso di luce e semplicità, interrotte ed esaltate da contrasti scuri e fantasie grafiche.

Nella speranza di aver soddisfatto le vostre aspettative non resta che consigliarvi due proposte molto diverse tra loro: il giovane e spregiudicato tempio street che porta il nome di Patta, per concludere con il lussuosissimo store Van Ravenstein, dove soddisfare l’ultimo capriccio prima del fatidico check out.

Imparando dagli errori creativamente: questo il concept alla base del nuovo portale Mistake e del collettivo di giovani creativi che lo sostiene.

The Mistake project is the brainchild of Luca Rufini, a young, Umbrian creative talent who, thanks to his region and EU funds to start-ups, has been able to realise a dream that we will now tell you about.

Mistakeproject.com is a portal designed to give space to young designers who have espoused the inspiring philosophy behind the entire project: DO more than talk! An attempt to disrupt the static idea that, until now, everything has focused on the product, but too little on who is selling it. Mistake is an infinite space accessible from all parts of the world, and can be used to propose all the genius and creativity that the Italian workforce is still able to generate, thanks to the beauty of imperfection and non-uniformity of each brand.

It will give space to young creative talents, designers, artists, craftsmen and musicians who will want to submit their work, fruit of craftsmanship and creativity, exploiting the immense potential of the web. It ranges from Semiserie, a graphic workshop of fantasy to Ozona eyewear, a line of tailored eyewear by designer Sandro Gonnella, with proposals from Mondofragile, in a perfect balance between fashion and art. But there are also activities related to the world of vintage, with the clothing of Vintage Room and the passion for vinyl records from Music Box. And if art is a passion for only a few, physical activity on the other hand concerns many of us, finding a new resource in the formula Urban Personal Trainer proposed by the online portal.

The site will also be a group blog where young urban reporters, the Mstkers, touring Italy will hunt for news and trends. The project started in Perugia, Rome and Milan with the idea of expanding nationally and, why not, Europe-wide? In the end, dreaming does not cost anything, and trusting in the philosophy of the creative young people involved in the project, if the business fails, it will all have been just a really beautiful mistake.

Si va da Semiserie, laboratorio grafico di fantasia, a Ozona eyewear, linea di occhiali sartoriali realizzati dal designer Sandro Gonnella, insieme alle proposte di Mondofragile, in perfetto equilibrio tra moda e arte. Ma non mancano le attività legate al mondo del vintage, con gli abiti di Vintage Room e la passione per i dischi su vinile di Music Box. E se l’arte è una passione per pochi, l’attività fisica riguarda invece molti di noi, trovando una nuova risorsa nella formula dello Urban Personal Trainer proposta dal portale online.

Il sito sarà inoltre un blog collettivo dove giovani urban reporter, i Mstkers, girando l’Italia andranno a caccia di novità e tendenze. Il progetto è partito da Perugia, Roma e Milano con l’idea di espandersi a livello nazionale e, perché no, europeo. Alla fine sognare non costa nulla e, confidando nella filosofia dei giovani creativi coinvolti nel progetto, se l’impresa non dovesse riuscire, sarà stato solamente un gran bello sbaglio.

No excuses: Spring / Summer 2013 sees the personality of the GAS man defined by a sophisticated look, casual, linear but never predictable, offered in the times of Denim. In a nutshell, GAS reinterprets one of the classics of men’s clothing with new modern and sophisticated combinations. A tribute to the blue: the deep and intense shades of the denim enhanced by the effects of treatments and washes, from raw to strong, with shades from lime green, to teal, mauve, wisteria. The trend takes on an ultra tight fit, offered in a skinny look in the models by Sax, Albert and Anders, and in the most eccentric “carrot” by Sax Low and Norton Carrot. The Funny Dandy taste of the collection emerges with the appearance of the shiny new Noley chino matched with a soft shirt and rugged jacket in yarn dyed striped cotton, or combined with a mélange raw-edged T-shirt and reverse cardigan. Summer is devoted to dusty neutral tones in blue and grey, combined with pastel coral, peach and aquamarine. The dandy has moved to California, and has made the slim fit chino the king of his look. Shirts rich in details: button downs become mandarin collars thanks to an opposite button on the inside; T-shirts that reinvent subjects with tropical colours assaulted by the sun. The relaxed mood of the outerwear clarifies once and for all the desire for elegant understatement for this season. And the lifestyle of the brand is embellished through the complete new line of underwear for him and her. A true Essensual collection, marked by sensuality, practicality and comfort, thanks to the super-soft cotton jersey and seductive details. The line is part of a brand extension along with activewear, loungewear and beachwear, and will be available in a taste of a few functional pieces from next spring. The flip book, do you remember that? The term, borrowed from the publishing of U.S. comics, refers to a block of cartoons.

Each sheet contains an illustration or a frame representing a phase of movement. By flicking quickly through the pages, one after the other, you get a short film. The idea of a portable mini-cinema that can be operated with only the help of the thumb, has the effect of a Proustian synesthesia, causing remote memories of childhood games to resurface, the smell of the paper, its rustling, the tickling of the fingertips. After having rediscovered the flip book almost by accident, by watching an old movie, the German designer and director, Sabine Klar relaunched it in Berlin in collaboration with Fingerfilm Verlag, the specialised publishing house that took care of production, manufacturing and distribution. In addition to flip books of all kinds, largely self-produced, book holders are also for sale, following the same rigourous path of hand-made. The mission declared by the authors of the project is to “bring a little analogue to the daily life.” In a first experimental model, “Bügeln mit Pupinta,” we find Sabine Klar in a ‘20s version of a pin-up in the role of the sensual character, struggling with the iron. An original gift idea which, it seems, has become a bestseller.

Every fleeting, but significant moment, such as the exchange of rings or a dance step can be captured in the pages of the pretty block. In short, we are all invited to create our very own film.

Il flip book, ve lo ricordate? Il termine, mutuato dall’editoria ai fumetti statunitensi, si riferisce ad un blocchetto di disegni animati. Ogni singolo foglio contiene un’illustrazione o un fotogramma che rappresenta una fase del movimento.

Facendo scorrere velocemente le pagine, una dopo l’altra, si ottiene un breve film. L’idea di un mini-cinema portatile che si può azionare con il solo aiuto del pollice ha l’effetto di una sinestesia proustiana, facendo riaffiorare alla memoria remoti giochi d’infanzia, il profumo della carta, il suo fruscìo, il solletico sotto ai polpastrelli. Dopo aver riscoperto il flip book quasi per caso, guardando un vecchio film, la designer e regista tedesca Sabine Klar lo ha rilanciato a Berlino in collaborazione con Fingerfilm Verlag, la casa editrice specializzata che ne cura produzione, manifattura e distribuzione.

Oltre a flip books di ogni genere, in gran parte autoprodotti, sono in vendita i porta-libretto, allo stesso modo rigorosamente fatti a mano. La missione dichiarata dagli ideatori del progetto è quella di “riportare un po’ di analogico nel quotidiano”.

In un primo, sperimentale esemplare, “Bügeln mit Pupinta,” ritroviamo Sabine Klar in versione pin-up anni ‘20 nel ruolo della sensuale protagonista, alle prese con il ferro da stiro. Un’ idea regalo originale che, a quanto pare, si è trasformata in un bestseller.

Ogni attimo fuggente, ma significativo, come lo scambio di anelli o un passo di danza può essere catturato nelle pagine del grazioso blocchetto. Insomma: siamo tutti invitati a realizzare il nostro personalissimo film.

Walking is certainly the most natural of ancient human activities, the first thing you learn even. The human being has always worked, travelled and conquered the highest peaks in the world, using only legs and strength, both physical and willpower. You move around so many times in a single day, so often, that you do not even notice, satisfying the inner drive that leads to keeping up with the pace and constant speed needed to move through the “modern world”, that always seems to elude us. But I defy anyone not to recall with pleasure a time when they were “forced” by events to resort to this form of motion (underground train door that closes a second before our arrival or the car that simply does not want to start); and in the end, after having got over our initial anger, were happy to have taken a different route from the one imposed by our normal routine, as a slave to technology. This is because walking, preferably as slowly as possible allows you to reclaim those spaces and those glimpses of the world that, even if you’ve seen them over and over, approached slowly seem new and unknown.

A moment that gives us the precious ability to be amazed by things from which we never expected anything, conditioned only by the speed and frenzy, used to the honking of the cars trapped in traffic.

The desire to slow down, it is appropriate to call it that, has helped to increase from year to year, the number of people who decide to move themselves and organise their time and holidays in this direction. Slow Life has a number of addicts with very different characteristics from each other, but whether it is walking in city parks doing a demanding multi-day trek, the common denominator is the regaining of an activity that modern lifestyle was relegated to a corner of our lives. The practice of Nordic walking for example is very much in vogue, even in urban areas or on longer trips like the Camino de Santiago de Compostela in Spain and the GR20 in Corsica.

This has also pushed the big international brands in the industry to invest in research and development to enable walkers comfort levels not even conceivable just a few years ago.

Each season the overseas giants Vibram and Gore-Tex (top of the range respectively in the production of technical and waterproof soles), renew their challenge to the more famous European competitors, most notably Italian and German.

Even urban fashion has not stood by watching while this technological mood that characterises the whole wardrobe tramples over them, with backpacks with ergonomic finishing and performance apparel, increasingly more oriented towards the use of these materials stolen from the ‘active’ world. Whether you to do it out of passion, to get closer to nature or just to keep in shape, there is nothing else to do but to wish you “bon voyage”, strictly step by step.

Camminare è sicuramente la più naturale quanto antica attività umana, la prima che si impara addirittura. Da sempre l’essere umano ha lavorato, viaggiato e conquistato le più alte cime del pianeta, utilizzando unicamente le proprie gambe e la propria forza, sia fisica che di volontà. Ci si muove e ci si sposta talmente tante volte nell’arco di una sola giornata che ormai, molto spesso, lo si fa anche senza accorgersene, assecondando la spinta interiore che porta a farlo, per tenere il passo di quel ritmo e della incessante velocità con la quale si muove il “mondo moderno”, che sembra sempre sfuggirci. Ma sfido chiunque a non ricordare con piacevolezza un momento in cui è stato “costretto” dagli eventi a ricorrere a questa forma di locomozione (porta della metro che si chiude un secondo prima del nostro arrivo o l’automobile che, semplicemente, non ne vuol sapere di partire); e alla fine, dopo aver smaltito la rabbia iniziale, siamo stati felici di aver intrapreso una strada diversa da quella che ci avrebbe imposto la nostra normale routine, ormai schiava della tecnologia.

Questo perché il camminare, meglio se più lentamente possibile, consente di riappropriarsi di quegli spazi e di quegli scorci di mondo che, anche se già visti e rivisti, avvicinati con lentezza sembrano nuovi e sconosciuti. Un momento che ci dà la possibilità preziosissima di stupirci di ciò da cui non ci saremmo mai aspettati nulla, condizionati solo dalla velocità e dalla frenesia, condite dai clacson delle automobili intrappolate nel traffico.

La voglia di lentezza, è proprio il caso di chiamarla così, ha contribuito a far incrementare di anno in anno il numero di persone che decidono di spostarsi e organizzare tempo e vacanze in questa direzione. La Slow Life ha un numero di addicted con caratteristiche molto diverse tra loro, ma che si tratti di camminate nei parchi cittadini piuttosto che di trekking di più giorni, anche impegnativi, il comune denominatore è il riappropriarsi di un’attività che la stile di vita moderno aveva relegato in un angolo della nostra vita. Molto in voga ad esempio la pratica del nordic walking anche negli spazi urbani o nelle lunghe direttrici come il Cammino di Santiago di Compostela in Spagna e il GR20 in Corsica.

Questo ha spinto anche i grandi brand internazionali del settore ad investire in ricerca e sviluppo per consentire ai viandanti 2.0 livelli di comfort nemmeno ipotizzabili anche solo pochi anni fa.

A colpi di Vibram e Gore-Tex (top di gamma rispettivamente nella produzione di suole tecniche e materiali impermeabili), ogni stagione i grandi colossi d’oltre oceano rinnovano la sfida ai più blasonati competitors europei, primi fra tutti italiani e tedeschi.

Anche la moda urban non è rimasta a guardare facendosi travolgere da questo mood tecnologico che contraddistingue tutto il guardaroba, con zaini dalle finiture ergonomiche e capi performanti, sempre più orientati verso l’utilizzo di questi materiali rubati al mondo ‘active’ delle discipline outdoor. Che lo facciate per passione, per riavvicinarvi alla natura o semplicemente per tenervi in forma, non ci resta che augurarvi buon viaggio, rigorosamente step by step.

The New York Fashion Week is still very much dominated by womenswear except on Sunday afternoon at Milk Studios. Unpredictable designers Laurence Chandler & Joshua Cooper for Rochambeau were inspired by the dark folklore surrounding water through history.

Summer collections are usually inspired by the beach, fun energy and intense colors but in this case it was replaced by dark hues and a mystifying mood. Specifically, their inspiration was the image of a beach on the southern coast of Iceland, where in place of light and soft sand they have black beaches darkened from volcanic ash.

Big round of applause to their dropped rise pants, almost like harem but keeping a fitted leg, long button down shirts and beautifully tailored jackets. Contrasting the dark side of summer, Antonio Azzuolo’s presentation room had a bright light, exposing an amazing sunny view of new York. The details and characteristics of his clothes are classic, signature, hand-tailored blazers with contrast trim sidewalks and long wrap vests. Fine gauge sweaters as layering pieces and shirts worn partially buttoned. Hand-tailored long bermudas in chic cool wool fabrics. One of the most memorable pieces was a fancy folk jacket in neon colors and a two piece Bermuda suit with a bright red pattern.

Carlos Campos chose simplicity and elegance to present his line.

His designs are inspired by the modern designs of Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. The Honduran-born designer says: “Calatrava is known for taking a minimalist approach, creating impressive spaces and structures while keeping those spaces open and clean. These vast open spaces yield the perfect ‘clean canvas’ to showcase the energetic bursts of color that this collection offers”. Last but not least we go back to school… Designers Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne for “Public School” continue the good momentum since receiving great reviews for their Fall/Winter 2012 collection. Composition was the key message at this season’s presentation. Every piece in the collection could be combined to create a fabulous look. Double breasted suits with peak lapels, leather vests and jackets, and tonal camouflage.

Definitely the perfect uniform for a young, contemporary world citizen.

La Fashion Week di New York è ancora territorio incontrastato della moda donna, eccezione fatta per la domenica pomeriggio ai Milk Studios.

Gli imprevedibili designer Laurence Chandler & Joshua Cooper del marchio Rochambeau hanno tratto ispirazione dal lato oscuro dell’elemento acquatico. Generalmente, le collezioni estive sono ispirate alla spiaggia, alla vitalità, al divertimento; in questo caso, invece, tutto ciò è sostituito da tonalità scure e da un mood dark.

La loro idea è riconducibile all’immagine di una spiaggia nelle coste meridionali dell’Islanda, dove al posto di luce e sabbia morbida si trovano spiagge nere, rese scure dalla cenere vulcanica. Un grande applauso ha salutato le loro creazioni, come i pantaloni dal cavallo basso quasi in stile harem, ma che mantengono una vestibilità slim, le lunghe camicie button down, le giacche squisitamente confezionate. In contrasto con il lato oscuro dell’estate, la sala adibita alla presentazione di Antonio Azzuolo era vivacemente inondata dalla luce che rivelava la straordinaria vista di una New York piena di sole. Segno caratteristico dello stile di Antonio Azzuolo sono i blazer dal taglio sartoriale, abbinati in contrasto a mocassini e lunghe canotte tagliate al vivo.

Maglioni sottili da indossare a strati e camicie abbottonate parzialmente, bermuda lunghi in elegante fresco di lana. Tra i pezzi da ricordare, il bomber di gusto folk in tinte al neon e l’abito bermuda a due pezzi, dalla fantasia rosso vivo. Carlos Campos si è affidato invece alla forza espressiva della semplicità per presentare la sua linea. I suoi modelli si ispirano ai progetti moderni dell’architetto spagnolo Santiago Calatrava. Il designer honduregno descrive il tema così: “Calatrava è noto per il suo approccio minimalista, che crea spazi e strutture di grande effetto pur lasciando gli stessi spazi e strutture aperti e puliti. Questi vasti open space sono per me come una tela bianca su cui presentare le vivaci esplosioni di colore che questa collezione offre.”

E in ultimo, ma non per questo meno importante, ci aspettava un ritorno a scuola… i designer Dao-Yi Chow e Maxwell Osborne per Public School puntano su una collezione scomponibile. Ogni singolo pezzo della linea è abbinabile a piacere per creare un look ibrido e attualissimo. Abiti a doppio petto con revers a lancia, gilet e giacche di pelle, stampe camou ton sur ton. Senza alcun dubbio la perfetta uniforme per un giovane cittadino del mondo.

The GAIA Spring / Summer 2013 collection wants you to cast your heart and your glance beyond the surface. Having left behind the camouflage inspiration, Gaia Brandt goes for a new beginning with boldness and eclecticism. “The silhouettes sway, elegant and whimsical through excesses of colours and contrasting shapes of delicate yet dazzling patterns, that enchant the senses of the observer.” The basic palette is borrowed from the space between sky and sea, the indigo blends with the powder pink, bottle green fades into white, and everything plays fearlessly with contrasting details in rusty brown and burnt orange in the name of optical illusion. The entire collection continues the never-ending research of GAIA in the world of the finest knitwear, colours and textures. The contrasting stripes, geometric shapes, austere collars and square necklines are there to increase the definition of the style of this brand of Danish origin. The figure is slender, agile, filled with a shade suffused with melancholy. The soft knee-length shorts; tops, dresses and jackets are moulded in the finest worked knitwear. On the subject of knitwear, a distinguished recipient of the made in GAIA creativity, is the lovely juxtaposition of lush yarns and impalpable fabrics like georgette silk, cotton poplin and lace inserts. The collection reveals a fascinating mix of elegance and frivolity, balance and excess, boldness and shyness: a journey into the impeccably unbridled talent of this versatile Danish artist.

Gettare il cuore e lo sguardo oltre la superficie, questo vuole la collezione GAIA Primavera/Estate 2013. Dopo essersi lasciata alle spalle l’ispirazione camouflage, Gaia Brandt tinge di audacia ed eclettismo il suo nuovo inizio. “Le silhouette ondeggiano eleganti e capricciose attraverso eccessi di colori e geometrie contrastanti, di fantasie delicate e tuttavia abbaglianti, che incantano i sensi dell’osservatore.” La palette di base è presa in prestito dallo spazio tra cielo e mare, l’indaco si fonde con il rosa cipria, il verde bottiglia sfuma nel bianco, e tutti giocano impavidamente con dettagli contrastanti marrone ruggine e arancio bruciato, nel nome di sua maestà l’illusione ottica. L’intera collezione continua la ricerca mai conclusa di GAIA nel mondo del più raffinato knitwear, dei colori e delle texture. I contrasti di strisce, forme geometriche, colletti austeri e scolli quadrati altro non fanno che aumentare la definizione dello stile di questo brand di origine danese. La figura è slanciata, agile, pervasa da un’ombra soffusa di malinconia.

I morbidi shorts si allungano al ginocchio; i top, gli abiti e le giacche sono plasmati nella più fine maglia operata.

E sempre in tema di knitwear, illustre destinatario della creatività made in GAIA, è incantevole l’accostamento di filati rigogliosi e tessuti impalpabili come le georgette di seta, i popeline di cotone e gli inserti in merletto. La collezione si rivela un affascinante mix di eleganza e frivolezza, equilibrio ed eccesso, audacia e timidezza: un viaggio nel talento impeccabilmente sfrenato di questa versatile artista danese.

Social networks and blogosphere have greeted the new collection of sweatshirts named Botanical Layers, just out in a limited edition on the online shop of SNDCT with a wave of enthusiasm. Syndicate, the street brand from Kiev, influenced by American heritage clothing and Scandinavian minimalism, as well as its inclination towards sustainability, is distinguished by its creative collaboration with underground artists from all over the world. This time, however, with Masha Reva, it is playing at home. The eclectic Ukrainian designer and filmmaker uses fashion as a language to experiment with new forms of visual communication. The result is astonishing: a mini series of fine quality sweatshirts, handcrafted at kilometre zero, reproducing a visionary botanical garden, winking an eye to the oversize taste of Martin Margiela. To complete the look, there are matching head pieces: couture accessories to be worn as a mask or blinkers. Streetwear made in Ukraine, in short, is as fresh as a just picked rose. But beware: in the blaze of floral motifs, from the most exotic to the most traditional and vintage, the download bars of the Photoshop program are forcing themselves in! It is a metaphor of our time, which, dominated by the increasingly pressing and neurotic rhythms and digital communication, a look of unfulfilled desire turns to nature.

Social network e blogosfera hanno accolto con un’ondata di entusiasmo la nuova collezione di felpe Botanical Layers appena uscita in edizione limitata sullo shop online SNDCT.com. Syndicate, lo street brand di Kiev, influenzato dall’heritage clothing americano e dal minimalismo scandinavo, oltre che per la sua inclinazione alla sostenibilità, si distingue per la collaborazione creativa con artisti underground provenienti da tutto il mondo. Stavolta però, con Masha Reva si gioca in casa. L’eclettica disegnatrice e cineasta ucraina utilizza la moda come linguaggio per sperimentare nuove forme di comunicazione visiva. Il risultato è sorprendente: una mini serie di felpe di finissima qualità, prodotte artigianalmente a kilometro zero, che riproducono un visionario giardino botanico strizzando l’occhio all’oversize di Martin Margiela.

A completare il look, ci sono gli head pieces coordinati: accessori couture da indossare come maschera o paraocchi. Lo streetwear made in Ukraina, insomma, è fresco come una rosa appena colta.

Ma attenzione: nel tripudio di motivi floreali, dai più esotici ai più tradizionali e vintage, si insidiano le barre di caricamento del programma Photoshop! È una metafora del nostro tempo, che, dominato dai ritmi sempre più incalzanti e nevrotici e dalla comunicazione digitale, volge alla natura uno sguardo carico di desiderio inappagato.

The only event of its kind in the United Kingdom, The Ledge successfully provides an essential platform for these sectors to come together under one roof. Not since the heady days of TBC has London been able to boast a tradeshow that has the potential to rival the big European shows, but this last year has seen The Ledge stake a claim to being the show that just might step up to the plate. Growing from season to season, the show now has over 250 action, streetwear, sport, skate and lifestyle brands exhibiting including internationally known names such as DC Shoes, Osiris, Etnies, Element, Nike, Hurley, Analog and Rip Curl.

The Ledge uniquely offers smaller stalls at a cost effective rate so that emerging UK and European brands have the opportunity to sit along side the internationally established ones and get out to the buyers. As with previous shows, the brands will be exhibiting within their natural habitat alongside the Osiris and Sidewalk sponsored mini ramp with shop teams going head to head for money prizes as well as a 12-month Osiris Show Sponsorship deal. As well as exhibiting a throng of the very best of action sports brands, September 2012 saw the launch of the highly anticipated ‘Streetwear Village’. Providing a swish upmarket feel, comfortable and stylish settings, soft hip-hop vibes and plenty of order writing space, the Village is rapidly becoming the must go place for streetwear brands looking to thrive within their own environment whilst still benefiting from a retail crossover with action sports brands. This season will once again see the very best of streetwear brands come together including King Apparel, Dickies, Huff, Diamond Supply Co and DGK to name a few. The reaction from buyers, visitors and exhibitors has been extremely positive. Robin Fairweather the UK Distributor of Makia, Sitka and SLVDR reports: “The Street Village has worked really well as its separated from the skate side but also works well in conjunction with it”. Visitors can also enjoy the plethora of entertainment available including breakdancing, live graffiti and live Tattoo artwork. The hype surrounding The Ledge is once again enormous and the January show will not fail to deliver over above all expectations.

Dal 25 al 27 gennaio 2013 presso il monumentale centro fieristico di Olympia situato a Londra, nel distretto diWest Kensington, lo skateboard e i suoi affini la faranno da padrone, in un salone interamente consacrato allo skate, allo sport d’azione e alla street culture. Evento unico nel suo genere per il Regno Unito, The Ledge è riuscito a portare sotto lo stesso tetto i marchi più significativi di questi settori. Era dai giorni di TBC che la città di Londra non presentava un evento di questo tipo, capace di competere con gli altri grandi saloni europei, ma l’ultimo anno ha visto crescere le potenzialità di The Ledge fino a candidarlo come nuovo competitor di tutto rispetto in questo specifico segmento.

Crescendo di stagione in stagione, la piattaforma annovera ormai 250 espositori che toccano i mondi dell’azione, dello sport, della moda e del lifestyle urbano, tra nomi internazionalmente noti come DC Shoes, Osiris, Etnies, Element, Nike, Hurley, Analog e Rip Curl.

La fiera è inoltre l’unico evento di questa fascia che offre spazi di dimensioni minime a costi contenuti per favorire l’ingresso di piccoli marchi emergenti sia locali che europei, che hanno così modo di presentare i loro prodotti al fianco di grandi brand affermati a livello internazionale ottenendo visibilità agli occhi dei buyer partecipanti. Come di consueto, i prodotti saranno calati nel loro habitat naturale, accanto alla rampa sponsorizzata da Osiris e Sidewalk dove si svolgeranno competizioni testa a testa tra i diversi brand-team per vincere premi in denaro a colpi di tricks , oltre a un contratto di sponsorizzazione di un anno offerta da Osiris. A fianco della pletora di marchi dedicati agli sport di azione, ritroveremo le atmosfere rilassate e le vibrazioni hip hop dello Street Village, la sezione lanciata nell’edizione di settembre e subito divenuta l’imprescindibile punto d’incontro e d’intersezione tra l’aspetto più tecnico dello sportswear e quello più fashion dello streetwear. Questa stagione vedrà riunito il meglio del settore con presenze quali King Apparel, Dickies, Huff, Diamond Supply Co e DGK, solo per citarne alcune.

Il riscontro da parte di buyer, espositori e visitatori è più che positivo. Nelle parole di Robin Fairweather, distributore UK di Makia, Sitka e SLVDR: “lo Street Village funziona davvero bene sia come dimensione a sé stante, sia in congiunzione alla sezione dello skateboard”. I visitatori potranno inoltre godersi il vasto programma di intrattenimento a base di breakdancing, sessioni di live graffiti e dimostrazioni di Tattoo art. Il clamore attorno a The Ledge, quindi, non accenna a diminuire e siamo certi che l’edizione di gennaio ancora una volta non deluderà le aspettative delle più esigenti streetwear-victims.
