Dr Joyce Logan is a U S Army veteran, recording artist and songwriter, author, magazine publisher, and streaming television producer She is an online bookstore owner She is a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She started her professional music career with gospel singing group, James Bignon and Gods Children in 1975 while enlisted in the US Army. As a current member of the City of Refuge based in Los Angeles, under the leadership of Bishop Noel Jones, Dr. Logan is an active member of the Ministerial Alliance. In 1982 James Bignon and God’s Children recorded their second album As one of the lead singers in the group, her lead song When He Calls Me on the Savoy Record label, received nationwide airplay and top Billboard charting. She penned songs for artists such as Cleophus Robinson, Dorothy Norwood, The BC& M Mass Choir, Mildred Clark, as well as James Bignon and God's Children. After ten years she returned home from Atlanta to California “I thought I would live out my life singing and songwriting for the Lord, but God had other plans for my life ”

Between concert touring and working for the Columbia School of Broadcasting she completed her degree in Broadcasting and Continuity Writing from the prestigious school, graduating with honors. The school was grooming her as an anchor for CNN but her passion was in the gospel music community. She was invited to start a gospel column in a national radio trade magazine, Black Radio Exclusive (BRE), where she would give gospel music and its artists broader exposure in a secular publication for the first time in history. BRE’s readers got a chance to meet artists and VIPs and get tidbits of who was doing what, when, and where in and around the gospel music industry within the magazines pages. She also launched the first gospel music radio/retail reports within the publication, later incorporating the feature into her Gospel International magazine where hundreds of radio stations and retail outlets reporting was featured.

Before Gospel International was initially launched in 1993, Dr. Joyce Logan was Marketing Director for then California based Word Records She worked directly with each music division to ensure a strong team effort that gained successful long-range visibility for each artist In addition, Dr Logan developed extensive tracking reports by tracking national radio stations and retailers to gauge the rate of product rotation and sales. She incorporated that same method of tracking in her initial issues of Gospel International.

As Marketing Director she was the keynote speaker during major music conference dates regarding the label’s new product releases. While developing and implementing marketing strategies, she also worked hand in hand with the A&R department Her repertoire of artists included Richard Smallwood, Shirley Caesar, The Clark Sisters, The Thompson Community Singers (aka the Tommies), The Winans, Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir, The Mighty Clouds of Joy, Albertina Walker, and many others Many of her WORD artists had previously performed in major concert venues with her group, James Bignon & God's Children.

When Word relocated to Nashville, Tennessee Dr. Logan could not leave because she wanted to be close to her mother who was very ill at the time in California. After leaving Word she was asked by CGI Records to develop their marketing and promotion efforts and for six months she flew back and forth from Los Angeles to Chicago each week to accomplish the task. CGI achieved top ratings on major music charts for the label’s artists which included Danniebelle Hall, Evelyn Turrentine-Agee, Calvin Bernard Rhone, and others

In 1984, only 8.2% of households in the US owned a personal computer, and the World Wide Web had yet to be invented By 2000, 54 million households, or 51% of US households had owned one or more computers In 1993 Dr Logan created the first-of-its-kind website on the Internet called Gospel International The initial Internet address was listed as gospelweb.com because hosting servers could not process website addresses with names over 10 characters at that time. She developed the framework for a multimedia Gospel enterprise combining traditional “street level experience” with “technology” based delivery systems

Shirley Caesar
The Clark Sisters
The Mighty Clouds of Joy

Her ability to respond to the changing marketplace using technology was an example of why Ms. Logan remains “cutting edge”. The site featured free email accounts for its users (for example jlogan@gospelweb.com). Gospel International featured one of the first chat rooms on the Internet (prior to Facebook) whereby users chatted in real-time with other users in the GI-Chat Room During this time Ms Logan was a beta tester for a new website called Facebook

As CEO of Gospel International Trade Magazine in print and online she worked directly with each department to ensure strong team effort and to gain successful results in the areas of subscription sales, ad revenue, and increased distribution sources She hired and trained staff members in the administrative, marketing, and sales local office; International staff who displayed great skills in print design, web design, and digital skills management; and editorial staff who researched and submitted articles and key commentary relevant to the Gospel music community.

On Christmas Eve 1999 during a routine monitoring of the Gospel International website and chat room she found a message instead of the website on the screen that said “Happy Holidays.” The website had been hacked and the web address was sabotaged Joyce Logan was unable to retrieve the addresses for the website The printing company had also been paid a substantial amount by someone not to print the next issue of the magazine. Dr Logan fought for years to retrieve the web address. In the meantime she was able to put a website up using another URL GospelInternationalVideoMagazine which emulated TV's Entertainment Tonight in its presentation. It was the first of its kind online. By today’s standards it would be called live streaming.

In 2006- 2007 she experimented with the then-new medium of presentation for online magazines, called flipbooks. Internal challenges and lack of funding prevented the video magazine from going forward and she dropped the format In 2010 she released her first book Seeds Become Trees on Amazon The book shares her personal life’s journey as she faced extreme challenges, from abuse to the loss of her four children, to homelessness, to keeping her vow to be a benefit to others within Gospel International no matter what her valley or mountain top experience was/is. She states, “during this season I never told anyone what I was going through. I kept silent. Often times people have a hard time receiving a message if their perception of you has been altered. Unfortunately, perception is everything I kept going to church I kept going to Bible study. I believed God would bring me through, and he did ”

As a veteran in the music industry, she is often called upon to speak to new artists and entrepreneurs regarding best practices and character in the industry. She continues to encourage, motivate, and educate men and women on how best to serve God in their daily walk, whether it be in the music field or simply living life.

In 2010 Joyce Logan returned to college and completed her Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology; MBA in Marketing; and earned her Doctorate in Management with a concentration in Executive Leadership by 2018 While working on her Doctorate she also attended Bethany Bible College simultaneously and received her certificate of completion in Evangelism with a concentration on Christian Counseling. She released her second book DIGITAL STRATEGIES 4 MUSIC INDUSTRY SUCCESS in 2018.

The book reveals where music industry personnel and artists currently stood, at that time, regarding new technology and digital strategies It chronicles how new technology affected the music industry over the decades and how technology used strategically can propel companies and artists towards success in the music industry. It shows how many old-school practices for marketing and promoting new music are still being implemented, and how today’s digital standards coupled with some old-school practices still get recorded projects miles ahead of the game by using the blueprint in the book. The book provides marketing insight and resources that will allow music industry leaders, artists, and personnel to become more skilled and successful in the music business, utilizing digital skills, strategies, and techniques shared within its pages The book foretold the coming of the streaming age which is now commonplace

In addition to Gospel International Dr. Logan currently manages artist, Dave Shirley, who is known for his strong vocals and key casting roles in stage plays across the country. His single “Let’s Help One Another” was labeled by Billboard Magazine as "bridging the gap between musical genres and cultures as well as bridging generations"

In 2021 Gospel International acquired channels on the ROKU TV Network and Amazon Fire TV. The TV channels went LIVE simultaneously on both platforms. In 2024 the channel became available via the Gospel International mobile app for Android and iOS, giving the brand greater visibility globally.

“This has been a lifelong dream from the moment we hit the street with the print magazine in 1993, to going online in 1994, to becoming a tabloid-sized music trade publication in 1999 with worldwide distribution. "I've seen many gospel industry magazines come and go in print and online since then, but we’ve stayed the course even when adversity knocked us down for a season It knocked us down, but it didn’t knock us out GI was never about fortune or fame for me but about the ministry of the gospel and the people who make it happen This is a ministry for me". In August 2021 in Chicago, Illinois, Dr. Logan was presented with a Trendsetter Award and honored by the Gospel Industry Network (G.I.N.) inducting her into the G.I.N. Hall of Fame. She has retired a few times over the years but her passion for this ministry keeps bringing her back to it. In 2022 she was presented with A Living Legend Award by the Texas Gospel Music Excellence Awards.

In 2023, she launched Prayze N Prayer Books, online, which specializes in adult coloring books she personally designed primarily for mental wellness. The coloring books are designed to reduce stress and have a calming effect on the user. Many of her books include prayers that have further strengthened and/or encouraged those using the books. She shares, “For one year, seven days a week, every morning, I shared (text) prayers with approximately 150 people individually and not in a group text, for their privacy and protection. The responses were testimonies of victory and healing and peace and joy. Many forwarded those prayers to friends, family and co-workers This is why I chose to incorporate prayers into some of my books ”

With the increased popularity of online print-on-demand distribution and flip books, Gospel International print magazine now returns with the ENCORE edition of the print magazine, available for sale and subscription online. It carries the Gospel International message to an even broader market nationwide. There are over 40 million on Amazon Fire TV (national) and 62+ Million on ROKU (international) as millions are ditching cable TV and opting for live streaming television channels such as Paramount, Amazon Prime, Netflix, and other streaming services. Gospel International gives greater exposure and a louder voice to the gospel music industry and its varying ministries. As a result, Gospel International is simultaneously in print, online, on TV, and mobile app. We have mobilized to globalize”

Tia Rachelle

After a three-year break from recording music, singer and songwriter Tia Rachelle returned to release a new single, "Get The Glory." The short hiatus granted her the needed and poignant personal time with herself and her family and focused time with God.

The time taken to reset has ignited new passion, which is heard and felt in "Get The Glory " The song gently flows with an R&B vibe, supporting inspiring lyrics with an undeniably clear message influenced by Isaiah 42:8: "I am the Lord; that is My name. And My Glory will I not give to another."

It is with a great deal of gratitude that I get this opportunity to reconvene with my contribution to this great publication Thank You and congratulations to, Publisher and Editor and Chief, Dr Joyce Logan, for stepping into this era with media that changed lives and gave Gospel Recording Artist and so many others the opportunity to make their gifts and talents known. This was the Hub, and it is once again.

Thank you for embracing “A Spiritual Connection” as we utilize this profound space to connect with people in various disciplines We will talk food, fashion, ministry, testimonies, music, podcast, and people There is absolutely no limit to who we will connect with as we learn and grow in grace and knowledge together as someone empowers us, inspires us, or reminds us of something magnificent. Because “every good gift and every perfect gift is from above…” (James 1:17), I am so excited about the gifts we will unwrap in this column.

My inaugural gift and connection is with culinary artist and entrepreneur Brandi Burks Kesselman. I hope my words come together well enough to articulate her excellence This lady wears so many hats and she sports them all very well.

In addition to her cooking expertise, she writes and directs productions for stage and television. Stay tuned while the studios put final edits on her masterpieces, or should I say, the Master’s Pieces?

Brandi is resourceful and the absolute go-to girl when it comes to making things happen. One of her most fascinating works of art is the Charcuterie Board where she paints with food like Picasso does with his brush. While the French typically serve this appetizer on a wooden board or stone slab, Brandi will serve it on a table that extends from one end of the room to the other.

She designs these works of art not just as an appetizer, but as a spectacular smorgasbord illustrating the theme of your choice. This lady knows food, how to build flavors and how to lay it all out in the most tasteful and artistic fashion.

So here is the thing that resonated with me when I made a spiritual connection with Brandi: She said, “Everybody is talking about the mustard seed, but nobody is eating it”. Of course, she was illuding to the scriptures when Jesus said, “…If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.” (Matthew 17:20). And then in the Book of Luke, it goes like this, “And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you.” (Luke 17:6)

I understood the scripture, and I hope I have at least that much, but I had no idea what the big deal was about eating mustard seeds. Brandi proceeded with a bland accusation about our cooking. She said most of us use salt, pepper seasoning salt, garlic salt, and then we repeat I thought that was a fair statement. Besides, when I think of nutrition, seasoning does not come mind, and surely mustard seeds do not. Well, it is time to change our mindset.

Brandi shared with me that in addition to being packed with flavor, the mustard seeds are loaded with vitamins like vitamin C, vitamin K, and B vitamins including thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, and folate.

The minerals in this tasty little tidbit are calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, and potassium. Can you believe that this powerful little seed contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agent This is a good opportunity and reason to venture away from the salt and pepper repeat regiment. When I asked about some of the ways to use this little miracle seed, Brandi knew all about it. She suggested putting them in oil until they pop and then adding them to vegetables or grinding them in salad dressing or how about adding them in soup for a nice pop of flavor. Wow, you can even make your own fresh mustard with a little vinegar and spices.

So, I ran to my spice rack just knowing there must be overlooked mustard seeds along with all the other unused seasonings that colorfully decorated the rack. I found coriander seeds (the manna was like those) but there were no mustard seeds for me to find. They were now at the top of the grocery list. They were the only things on the grocery list to pick up the next day, I found yellow ones and brown ones and black ones and until I figure out what to cook, if I cook, I will just eat a spoon full of the miraculous mustard seeds, make sure my faith measures up, and invite you to do the same Thank You, Brandi Burks Kesselman!

We are quickly approaching the fall season which happens to be my second favorite season of the year. With the fall season comes those savory dishes that resonate and satisfy the soul. I can't help but get excited about the delightful dishes that warm the soul What could I possibly be referring to? Today, I invite you on a culinary journey featuring two of our favorites: chili and gumbo! Chili just makes your insides feel cozy and satisfied with every spoonful. Now I’m a southern diva and in our area real chili doesn’t have pasta in it AT ALL! I whip mine up with ground turkey instead of beef and a medley of beans which allows me to maximize the amount of protein I can get from one meal and keep it delicious The beauty of it all is that this one meal can make multiple meals to create diversity for you and your family. First you can just enjoy a hearty bowl of chili. Then you can grill some franks and create mouthwatering chili dogs (I LOVE me a chili dog with cheese and chopped onions!)

Feeling adventurous? Try making a salad layered with your favorite chips, chili, jalapenos, lettuce, cheese and onions. Last, if you’re watching your calories – serve your chili on top of a bed of lettuce for a healthy twist. Now for me, when I eat chili, I find no need for crackers or cornbread. If it’s made right the chili is all that I need at that moment unless I’m making one of the aforementioned delicious variations I feel the same with gumbo. When you make gumbo and you have the roux to perfection, there’s no need for any enhancements. Some people like rice under their gumbo but I prefer mine without the rice The staple ingredients for gumbo are shrimp, okra, tomatoes, sausage, corn, peppers, onions and spices The beauty of it is you’re not limited to just those ingredients! Feel free to drop in some chicken, green beans, potatoes – YOU NAME IT! Now the southern diva part of me will make cornbread to go along with the gumbo, because my southern roots dictate that I make it as an accompaniment. Let’s face it, cornbread is a southern staple! When I make my cornbread, I will elevate it by chopping up a jalapeno and mix it in the batter before baking it The first time my mother saw me cutting up a jalapeno for cornbread, she was truly baffled. “Why would you ruin the cornbread?” she exclaimed, convinced it would ruin the flavor. She also proclaimed that it was going to make the cornbread nasty. I patiently explained to her that the jalapeno didn’t make it spicy, it just enhanced the overall taste

The jalapeno actually ends up tasting like bell peppers in the cornbread. When the cornbread came out of the oven, who was the first person cutting and eating a piece? MY MOTHER! Then she had the nerve to come back for another piece proclaiming that I was right it did add a delightful savory note to the cornbread So, the next time that you make some cornbread, I encourage you to give it a try, chop up a jalapeno and add it to your batter before you put it in the oven. Let me know how much you like it after you give it a try. I can’t wait to hear how much you love it! I know you’re going to thank me! You’re welcome!

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name ' s sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

Building Your Company’s Finances on Faith and Godly Principles

As a Christian entrepreneur, we need to integrate our faith into all aspects of our business, especially in our financial practices

Having biblical values can shape how we run and make decisions for our company. God’s word guides our choices while ensuring our practices align with Godly principles. Obedience, faith, discipline, and timing combined with administrative, operational, marketing, and financial strategies also play a big part in our business success

I’ve found that God goes to great lengths to set up systems and strategies early in the business development stage designed to help us win. He often gives us business ideas and different approaches to launch and run our business, but he leaves managing our finances up to us.

In this article, we cover practical strategies for integrating faith into our everyday business practices We discuss accounting, cash flow management, budgeting, and investing strategies (to help keep the doors open) while strategically building wealth. This article also touches on tithing and giving back to the community.

Laying the Foundation for Building Our Company’s Finances with Faith and Godly Principles at the Helm

As a Christian business owner, how we run our business should be strategically interwoven with how God wants us to represent him in the marketplace Faith inspires us, but our day-to-day actions are what causes God to respond to our acts of faith Because faith without works is dead (James 2:26), our actions show God that He can trust us with running our business. And since promotions come from the Lord (Psalm 75: 6-7), it is God who we should please and rely on for our success. We should also seek Him first (so the things we desire for our business) can be added to us according to his word (Matthew 6:33).

Faith in God, discipline, and stewardship ultimately shape how we run our business and reap its rewards. Our relationship with God reflects how we lead, manage, and treat people and how quickly we respond to God as he speaks to us throughout the day

While we operate our businesses - typically taking the lead and making decisions, surrendering to God’s voice helps us make some of the best business decisions possible. When we allow God to become the lamp unto our footsteps, he will lead us to take the proper steps for our business growth and success. Steps that lay a solid foundation while creating financial stability. Since God holds the blueprint for our company, it’s to our advantage to follow it and run it his way, not our way or in our own might Why? As it says in Psalms 127:1, “Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it”. According to Proverbs 14:12, “There’s a way that seems right to a man, but the end thereof is the way of death”. So, we may have a plan, but God has the master plan.

We can trust God to send us clients (although marketing and advertising helps too) Satisfied customers will share their experiences with others Since our “good” reputation precedes us (Proverbs 22:1), our satisfied clients will likely become repeat customers and refer others to us. Good customer service builds traction that causes our business to grow and scale, creating longevity and financial stability. (More on this below.)

How to Build Stability in Our Company’s Finances

God will lead and guide us in multiple areas based on what’s best for our business He will send us customers to keep our pipeline full, lead us to get the education and the certifications and meet the regulations needed to run our business, but he won’t manage our finances. Since we are laborers together with Christ (1 Corinthians 3:9), managing our finances is our responsibility. He is faithful to his part and expects us to be faithful to ours. Once we prove to God that we can manage what he has entrusted unto us, he’ll trust us with more (Mathews 25:23): more clients, more responsibilities, and ultimately more revenue

Practical Strategies for Financial Management

As our business grows, we should have well-maintained financial records that can serve as a barometer to measure its financial health. Financial statements are a tell-tell sign of our business’s performance. Ongoing accounting, cash flow management, budgeting, and investing techniques help manage and ultimately grow our business

Accounting and Cash Flow Management: Strong accounting practices should be established as early as possible – including keeping personal finances separate from business finances. Regularly monitoring cash flow statements helps identify potential pitfalls before they occur. It provides an opportunity to put funding strategies in place in advance. See Luke 14:28- 30, which talks about the importance of financial planning by first counting up the costs.

Budgeting: Developing a budget establishes financial boundaries and reduces overspending. Regularly reviewing budgets and variance reports lets us see if our business operates within or over budget These reports also show us where we are overspending and where to make cutbacks.

Investing: Christian business owners can use various investment strategies that generate extra revenue streams. Seeking God for wisdom and getting wise counsel from advisors can put us on the right track to wealth investment opportunities.

Tithing and Giving Back to the Community

Tithing reflects our relationship with God It is a biblical practice that reminds us to honor Him with our increase (Malachi 3:10). By tithing on our business profits, we show gratitude by acknowledging God as our source Giving back to the community is a great way to become a beacon of hope in the neighborhoods that support our business.

But blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in Him.

He is like a tree planted by the waters that sends out its roots toward the stream.

It does not fear when the heat comes, and its leaves are always green.

It does not worry in a year of drought, nor does it cease to produce fruit.…
