ABOUT BALLET TECH FOUNDATION, INC. In 1974, choreographer Eliot Feld founded Ballet Tech as a professional ballet company, known then as the Eliot Feld Ballet, serving principally as an instrument for his choreography. Three years later, sharing a crowded subway car with a gaggle of giddy kids on a field trip, Mr. Feld had an aha! moment. He thought: Sprinkled among the elementary school students in NYC there must be an untold number of children with an inborn gift for dance who have little or no opportunity to receive the early training required to transform themselves into classical dancers – ballet dancers. Addressing this alarming neglect was imperative for parity of opportunity, to provide a valuable resource for classic dance, and a requirement for an evolving democracy. Pursuing this aspirational endeavor, in 1978, Ballet Tech established its tuition-free ballet school dedicated to identifying and training public school children in classical dance. Each school year, Ballet Tech sends audition teams to elementary schools throughout the city to identify children of incipient gift and a fervor for dance. After those auditions, children are invited to an Introduction to Ballet program at Ballet Tech’s studios at 890 Broadway. Each year, 40-50 students are then invited to enter the full time Ballet Tech school as incoming 4th graders. The Ballet Tech school is a cooperative venture of the NYC Department of Education and the Ballet Tech Foundation. For students in grades 4-8, the school is a full service institution, integrating a comprehensive curriculum of academic courses provided by the Department of Education with intensive balletic and broad-based dance instruction provided by Ballet Tech, all under one roof. It’s a unique and dynamic educational ecology. Absolutely and completely tuition-free! In the fall of 2014, Ballet Tech and Professional Performing Arts School (PPAS) allied their complementary programs. This partnership enables selected Ballet Tech students to attend the highly regarded PPAS High School where they receive their academic education in a rigorous and sympathetic environment, while continuing, indeed intensifying and expanding, their dance training at Ballet Tech. Complementing the school’s day in and day out operations, Ballet Tech presents annual seasons of Kids Dance at The Joyce Theater, performing past dances and new ballets choreographed by Eliot Feld, other distinguished choreographers, and this year members of the Ballet Tech faculty. In addition, Kids Dance has performed at City Center, the Delacorte in Central Park, the New Victory, and Symphony Space. Ballet Tech Foundation has, singularly, brought together the often adversarial realms of New York real estate and the performing arts. Ballet Tech conceived and directed the renovation of The Joyce Theater. Also, in partnership with American Ballet Theatre, Ballet Tech’s intercession saved 890 Broadway from commercial development. Known as the Lawrence A. Wien Center for Dance and Theater, the building continues to serve as home for Ballet Tech, American Ballet Theatre, and Gibney Dance, as well as one of New York’s primary rehearsal complexes for the performing arts. Ballet Tech’s ability to conceive and carry out these real estate projects attests to its understanding of the need to create an infrastructure that supports its more poetic enterprises. Find out more about Ballet Tech at www.ballettech.org. If you would like to be on our mailing list, or are inspired to support Ballet Tech, please contact us at 890 Broadway, New York, NY 10003, (212) 777-7710, or at questions@ballettech.org.
ABOUT BALLET TECH FOUNDATION, INC. BALLET TECH'S COMMISSIONING PROJECT For aspiring piano students there are Bach’s two and three-part inventions and Bartok’s Mikrokosmos, both designed to develop skills and refine evolving sensibilities. With that model in mind, Ballet Tech has resolved to build a library of new choreography imagined for and designed on emerging dancers. This will be a repertory of original dances, dreamed up and composed by boffo dance makers, for fledgling dancers to hone their skills and whet their imaginations. And, of course, intended to delight the eye and enchant the fancy of audiences of all ages. Our 2022 additions include Men Ca’s Guardians, John Heginbotham’s Manhattan Research, and Michael Snipe Jr.’s Infrastructure. The library includes works by Julia Eichten, Brian Brooks, Stephanie Terasaki, Conner Bormann, and Riley O’Flynn, Laura Careless, and Eliot Feld.

WHO'S WHO IN THE COMPANY ELIOT FELD (Founder of Ballet Tech) was born in Brooklyn, NY and studied dance at the School of American Ballet, New Dance Group, High School of Performing Arts, and with Richard Thomas. At 16, he joined the Broadway cast of West Side Story and appeared as Baby John in the movie version, and later danced on Broadway in I Can Get It for You Wholesale and Fiddler on the Roof. With DTH, Figgins performed leading roles in Agon, Serenade, Four Temperaments, and Concerto Barocco. When the company went on a two-year hiatus in 2004, Ms. Figgins turned her sights to Broadway, and was eventually cast in the original Broadway company of Hot Feet, where she understudied the leading role. After Hot Feet, Ms. Figgins moved to LA where she appeared in Smokey Joe’s Cafe, which garnered her an Ovation Nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Musical. She returned to NY to perform in the original casts of Memphis, and Motown: the Musical. She served as assistant choreographer for 2012’s Leap of Faith on Broadway. Her television credits include Flesh and Bone, The 80th Annual Academy Awards, and House, and her film credits include Across the Universe, Walk Hard, Louis, and Bolden.

Some of his noted accomplishments are designing costumes for Dance Theatre of Harlem’s school and Summer Intensive performances. From 1991 through 1999, he designed costumes for Dance Institute of Washington, formerly known as Reflections Dance Company. He designed the costumes for DIW’s inaugural Kwanzaa performance, which is still one of the company’s signature productions. He gives continuous gratitude and recognition for having the opportunity to work firsthand with Ms. Zelda Wynn, renowned African American fashion and costume designer who was the first wardrobe supervisor for Dance Theatre of Harlem. ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION The Joyce Theater Foundation ("The Joyce," Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for over three decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther’s clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 400 U.S.-based and international companies. The Joyce has also expanded its reach beyond its Chelsea home through off-site presentations at venues ranging in scope from Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, to Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center, and to outdoor programming in spaces such as Hudson River Park. To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (K–12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists. The Joyce’s annual season of about 48 weeks of dance now includes over 340 performances for audiences in excess of 150,000 patrons. Visit Joyce.org for more information.
FUNDERS Many Thanks to The Joyce's Institutional Funders for Keeping Us Moving Forward An abundance of gratitude to Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Representative Jerrold Nadler, and Representative Nydia M. Velázquez for their visionary leadership that established the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant program, which has helped make the reopening of The Joyce Theater and the reemergence of many dance companies possible.

ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION VISION STATEMENT
LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
The Joyce Theater Foundation is committed to fostering and supporting a diverse and inclusive environment, both on and off stage. We embrace and celebrate diversity in all its forms, and value the rich experiences and perspectives that arise from differences in race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, religion, age, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and cognitive and physical ability.
The Joyce Theater operates on the Lenape island of Manhahtaan (Mannahatta) and acknowledges that it was founded upon the stolen land and erasure of many Indigenous communities. This acknowledgement demonstrates our institution’s commitment to the process of dismantling the legacies of colonialism and cultural imperialism.
We strive to counteract the social injustices and racism that exist within our communities, our nation, and our world. Our aim as an organization is to embody the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice. To achieve this, we will:
We acknowledge the ongoing violence towards Indigenous people through systemic inequality. We pay our respect to the Indigenous peoples who lived and continue to live upon this land, and whose rich history, artistic practices, and spirituality are tied to this land. It is within our responsibility as a cultural institution and our commitment to diversity and inclusion to embody a commitment to Indigenous rights and cultural equity.
• Create and implement proactive diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice initiatives; • Establish and maintain a culture of safe sharing, intentional listening, learning, and growth; • Engage with and support disenfranchised communities by sharing information and resources and ensuring accessibility; • Develop metrics and conduct regular reviews of our programs and policies to hold ourselves accountable and shift as neededs.
We sincerely invite you as an audience member to take a moment to reflect on the history and legacy of displacement, migration, and settlement. It is our intention to work with local Native American arts councils to better inform our land acknowledgment practices and anticipate that it will evolve over time.
With these goals in place and our Vision Statement in mind, we are dedicated to the continued learning and growth needed to foster an inclusive environment for all. This is an ongoing process and by nature will be an evolving statement.
