WHO'S WHO IN THE COMPANY

CARLOTA SANTANA (Founder/Artistic Director), hailed as “The Keeper of Flamenco” by Dance Magazine and honored by the King and Government of Spain with La Cruz de la Orden al Mérito Civil for “all the years of passion, excellence and dedication to the flamenco art,” is an internationally-renowned flamenco and Spanish dance artist and educator. In 1983, she co-founded Flamenco Vivo with Roberto Lorca; following his death from AIDS in 1987, she was determined to continue their work. In the decades since, she has led Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana’s growth with a mission to promote flamenco as a living art form and a vital part of Hispanic heritage.

Ms. Santana created the company’s innovative arts-in-education program, integrating Spanish dance and culture with academic curricula, and has pioneered bilingual education initiatives targeted to immigrant populations, as well as other programs addressing the special needs of disabled youth. Beyond the company’s on-going work, she has also been the driving force behind a series of unique special projects, including two flamenco symposia produced in collaboration with Duke University’s Dance Department (2012 and 2015), and the 100 Years of Flamenco in New York exhibit mounted in partnership with The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. The first-ever curated museum show on flamenco in the US, 100 Years ran for five months (March-August 2013) in The Vincent Astor Gallery at Lincoln Center; in his review, The New York Times chief dance critic Alastair Macaulay praised the “vitality and pride” of the show, noting: “This vivid collection enriches our ideas of both this genre and this city.” Ms. Santana has been on the faculty of Duke University for ten years and has taught at Long Island and New York Universities.

MARÍA BERMÚDEZ (Guest Dancer), aka ‘Chacha,’ Artistic Director, Dancer, Choreographer, and Teacher, has helped shape the flamenco communities of Los Angeles, CA (where she was born and raised) and Jerez de la Frontera, Spain (her adopted residence of 30+ years). She’s introduced the greatest artists from Jerez to countless audiences through her company Sonidos Gitanos (Gypsy Sounds) touring stages like the Hollywood Bowl and John Anon Ford Amphitheater in Los Angeles, Lincoln Center outdoors NY, Festival de Beaucaire, France, and the Palacio Das Artes, Brazil. After a successful show as part of the legendary Fiesta de la Bulería in Jerez in 2019, María realized an unprecedented collaboration between the Jerez Festival and famed Walt Disney Concert Hall to present in LA, as Artistic Director & performer, the Fiesta de la Bulería on Tour. That same year her work was honored by the city of flamenco, Jerez de la Frontera, officially naming María Bermudez “Embajadora del Flamenco de Jerez” (Ambassador of Jerez Flamenco) 2022. As a Guest Artist she appeared with the Australian Guitar Festival (dedicated to Paco de Lucia) at The Teatro Villamarta, Spain, and with Los Angeles’ Santa Cecilia Orchestra, Sonia de Leon conductor, and many more. Currently María divides her time between Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, where the María Bermudez Flamenco Performing Arts Studio nurtures and expands a strong flamenco culture; and Jerez, evolving there as an artist with her traditional company ‘Sonidos Gitanos’ and her Jazz Flamenco Project Chicana Gypsy. María's Flamenco journey began in the late 80’s and Carlota Santana’s was one of the first Companies she toured with. “It was the best experience for a dancer getting a start, and I remain in awe of her past and present accomplishments. I am honored and grateful to be part of

this celebration. ¡Viva Carlota Santana y Gracias!”. Maria first appeared with the Company in 1988.

ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION

The Joyce Theater Foundation ("The Joyce," Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for over three decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther’s clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 400 U.S.-based and international companies. The Joyce has also expanded its reach beyond its Chelsea home through off-site presentations at venues ranging in scope from Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, to Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center, and to outdoor programming in spaces such as Hudson River Park. To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (K–12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists. The Joyce’s annual season of about 48 weeks of dance now includes over 340 performances for audiences in excess of 150,000 patrons. Visit Joyce.org for more information.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The Joyce Theater operates on the Lenape island of Manhahtaan (Mannahatta) and acknowledges that it was founded upon the stolen land and erasure of many Indigenous communities. This acknowledgement demonstrates our institution’s commitment to the process of dismantling the legacies of colonialism and cultural imperialism.

We acknowledge the ongoing violence towards Indigenous people through systemic inequality. We pay our respect to the Indigenous peoples who lived and continue to live upon this land, and whose rich history, artistic practices, and spirituality are tied to this land. It is within our responsibility as a cultural institution and our commitment to diversity and inclusion to embody a commitment to Indigenous rights and cultural equity.

We sincerely invite you as an audience member to take a moment to reflect on the history and legacy of displacement, migration, and settlement.

It is our intention to work with local Native American arts councils to better inform our land acknowledgment practices and anticipate that it will evolve over time.
