ABOUT GARTH FAGAN
GARTH FAGAN (Founder/Artistic Director/President) has been called “a true original,” “a genuine leader,” and “one of the great reformers of modern dance.” Garth Fagan is the founder and artistic director of the multi award-winning Garth Fagan Dance, Garth Fagan Dance School, and the Fagan Institute East. Celebrating 52 years with this home season at The Joyce, the internationally acclaimed company is taking its rightful place as a Black Legacy dance company with a message that shows people of color are worthy, capable, and interested in telling stories that affect people of all colors and backgrounds. As an “Irreplaceable Dance Treasure” Tony and Olivier Award winner, Fagan used the dance vocabulary born of Garth Fagan Dance- Fagan Technique, to create the movement that helped build Disney’s The Lion King on Broadway to its towering heights. Over 100 million audience members have become part of one global community he helped create on stage. Fagan Technique continually renews a distinctive dance vocabulary, which draws on many sources: a sense of weight in modern dance, torso-centered movement and energy of Afro-Caribbean, the speed and precision of ballet, and the rule breaking experimentation of the postmoderns. “Originality has always been Mr. Fagan’s strong suit, not least in his transformation of recognizable idioms into a dance language that looks not only fresh but even idiosyncratic,” writes Anna Kisselgoff of The New York Times. For his path-breaking choreography for Walt Disney’s The Lion King, Fagan was awarded the prestigious 1998 Tony Award for Best Choreography. He also received the 1998 Drama Desk Award, 1998 Outer Critics Circle Award, 1998 Astaire Award, 2000 Laurence Olivier Award, 2001 Ovation Award, and the 2004 Helpmann Award for his work on the Broadway musical, which opened in Fall 1997 to extraordinary critical praise. Fagan’s distinguished work in the theater also includes the first fully staged production of the Duke Ellington street opera, Queenie Pie, at the Kennedy Center in 1986 and the opening production of Joseph Papp’s New York Shakespeare Festival’s Shakespeare Marathon: A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1988), set in Brazil and directed by A.J. Antoon.
In the world of concert dance, Fagan choreographs primarily for his company. “An evening spent with Garth Fagan Dance is a humanity-affirming event” (Victoria Looseleaf). His work, Mudan 175/39, was named by The New York Times as the third of the top six dance watching moments of 2009. The company continues to be cited for its excellence and originality: ”Consider the Fagan program a prime example of the versatility and sophistication of concert dance in this new century” (The Los Angeles Times).
Fagan has also produced commissions for a number of leading companies, including his first work on pointe, Footprints Dressed in Red, for Dance Theatre of Harlem, Scene Seen, a solo for Judith Jamison for the debut of the Jamison Project, Jukebox for Alvin for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Never No Lament for the José Limón Dance Company, and Ellington Elation, part of a triad of pieces commissioned by New York City Ballet in honor of Duke Ellington’s centenary and New York City Ballet’s 50th anniversary. In 2012, Lewis Segal wrote: "...it was American master Garth Fagan who best fused technical virtuosity with conceptual depth... soul-deep conviction and spectacular flair….the indispensable dance experience of the year.”
Fagan began his career when he toured Latin America with Ivy Baxter and her national dance company from Jamaica. Baxter and two other famed dance teachers from the Caribbean, Pearl Primus and Lavinia Williams, were major influences on Fagan. In New York City, Fagan studied with Martha Graham, José Limón, Mary Hinkson, and Alvin Ailey, who were all central to his development. Fagan was director of Detroit’s All-City Dance Company and principal soloist and choreographer for Detroit Contemporary Dance Company and Dance Theatre of Detroit. In October 2001, Fagan, a native of Jamaica, was presented with the Order of Distinction in the rank of Commander: A national honor bestowed upon him by the Jamaican government. In August 1998, he received that country’s Special Gold Musgrave Medal for his “Contribution to the World of Dance and Dance Theater,” and at Prime Minister P.J. Patterson’s Independence Gala, Fagan was presented with the Prime Minister’s Award, a plate bearing the signatures of all the prime ministers of Jamaica, acknowledging his achievements.
In 2012 Garth Fagan was selected as an “Irreplaceable Dance Treasure” by The Dance Heritage Coalition, an irreplaceable dance treasure has made a significant impact on dance as an art form, demonstrated artistic excellence, enriched the nation's cultural heritage, demonstrated the potential to enhance the lives of future generations, and shown itself worthy of national and international recognition. In 2011, the Institute of Caribbean Studies, which celebrates excellence in literature, science, technology, community service, and corporate leadership, presented Fagan with the Marcus Garvey Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2012, the University of Rochester and its Frederick Douglass Institute for African and African-American Studies awarded The Frederick Douglass Medal to Fagan to acknowledge his scholarship and civic engagement that honor the Douglass' legacy. In Fall 2017, Garth received A Lifetime Achievement award from the American Dance Guild. He is a Chancellor’s Award-winning Distinguished University Professor Emeritus of the State University of New York, and taught for over three decades at the State University of New York at Brockport. In the Fall of 2003, Fagan received the George Eastman Medal from the University of Rochester for “outstanding achievement and dedicated service.” He holds honorary doctorates from The Juilliard School, the University of Rochester, Nazareth College of Rochester, and Hobart and William Smith Colleges. In 2001, he was the recipient of the Golden Plate Award and was inducted into the American Academy of Achievement. In 1996, he was named a Fulbright 50th Anniversary Distinguished Fellow. Fagan received the 2001 Samuel H. Scripps American Dance Festival Award. He is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and a prestigious three-year choreography fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. In recognition of his contribution to modern dance, Fagan has received the Dance Magazine Award for “significant contributions to dance during a distinguished career” and a Bessie Award for Sustained Achievement. Other awards include the Monarch Award from the National Council for Culture and Art, the Lillian Fairchild Award, and the Arts Achievement Award from his alma mater, Wayne State University. On October 1, 2021, Fagan received the distinguished Eastman Luminary Award for his extraordinary service to music and the arts at both local and national level.

WHO'S WHO IN THE
WILLIAM (BILL) J. FERGUSON II (Executive Director), Executive Director of Garth Fagan Dance, is a thought leader navigating the future of a global dance treasure, a person of distinction nationally providing insight and advice for a number of Boards and Initiatives, and is founder of Bilbilravago LLC, a jewelry & sculpture company where he also maintains artistic insights as one of the lead designers of fine jewelry and installation creations. Mr. Ferguson spent his formative years, six to 17, in Turkey and Germany, and is a U.S. Air Force veteran; he was a crew chief on OV-10a light attack and observation aircraft. Mr. Ferguson joined Garth Fagan Dance in 1989 and became a senior company member in 1996. While teaching and growing administratively and artistically, William has worked at every level within the Garth Fagan Dance School since 1990. In an effort to share more fully, Bill created and began directing the Garth Fagan Dance Student Ensemble in 2000. For 20 years, the ensemble has become a nurturing ground for the next generations of Fagan experts and off-book thinkers. William has choreographed and executive produced performances of the Ensemble at venues across the middle region of New York State and at noted places including The MAG’s Clothesline Festival, preserved Sonnenberg Gardens, the Susan B. Anthony House; home of one of the mothers of women's suffrage, and, most recently, at the City of Rochester Black Heritage Performance at the Hochstein School of Music.
The Garth Fagan Dance Student Ensemble was chosen in collaboration with Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and Trumpeter Herb Smith as one of five arts organizations awarded $100,000 by The Max and Marian Farash Charitable Foundation. The Ensemble provided local at-risk teens with an intensive, innovative introduction to dance, complete with culminating free public performances that helped realign the lives of several participants and their families. The program included after-school classes in Fagan Technique, specialized workshops in topics that included anti-bullying, street safety, and nutrition. The initiative exemplified the role that music, visual arts, and dance could play in the life of those most vulnerable. Additionally, field trips for students and parents to local cultural institutions developed into an evening of original works performed by the students with original choreography by Mr. Ferguson and music by Herb Smith.
Mr. Ferguson, who was also a noted compositional intellect before joining Fagan, has also taught Technique, dance composition, and repertory classes at the Garth Fagan Dance Summer Movement Institute since its inception in 2004. After retiring from the concert stage in 2008, Mr. Ferguson embraced the position of Executive Artistic Liaison for Garth Fagan Dance and Personal Assistant to Garth Fagan. Through the years, his roles have included Company Manager, Production Manager, and Facilities Manager. He also contributed to the curation and archival digitizing of Garth Fagan and Fagan Dancers history and origin story, including maintaining archival video, producing television and radio commercials, national and international ads, and marketing and grant peripherals for Garth Fagan Dance. Currently, he is the lead in the development of a Cooperative-Creative connection with Rochester Institute of Technology/ National Institute for the Deaf and creating a national Fagan Technique department at the lauded university.
COMPANY
Paying it forward, William serves as Vice President of the Board of the Joseph Avenue Arts and Culture Alliance, is a member of the George Eastman Museum board, and has served in an Advisory role for the New York State Council of the Arts. A prostate cancer survivor, William’s greatest joy is being husband to Nicolette Depass and father to his sons, William Donovan and Nicholas Lamond.
NORWOOD PENNEWELL (Rehearsal Director/Choreographer/ Principal Dancer) joined Garth Fagan Dance in 1978. He is the quintessential Garth Fagan dancer and is Fagan's assistant and muse. Pennewell is a recipient of a 1988 New York Performance Award "Bessie" and has had several major works created for him, including Passion Distanced, Time After Before Place, and Moth Dreams, among others. Pennewell's dancing has been seen all over the world as well as on Great Performances, The Tonight Show, and in Duke Ellington's Queenie Pie. In 1994, he was invited to perform in the 66th Annual Academy Awards. Pennewell teaches company and master classes for Garth Fagan Dance. He assisted Mr. Fagan during his work on Broadway’s The Lion King and the NYC Ballet 50th anniversary Ellington project.
Norwood “PJ” Pennewell has a 44-year performance history as a world-class dancer, and a decades long understanding of Fagan Technique. Over the past 11 years, Mr. Pennewell has choreographed 11 new works on Garth Fagan Dance and is the only choreographer that has set works on the company other than Fagan himself. Nine of these works held their world premiere at The Joyce Theater in New York City to rave reviews: “As you'd expect, Pennewell's movement and formal acuity are rooted in his mentor's style. But right away, there's a smart quirk…” (Village Voice); “Mr. Pennewell knows how to organize bodies. And he knows these bodies: their strengths, their weaknesses, their inclinations, in relation to a very particular way of moving” (The New York Times). Each work uses the Fagan Technique as a foundation and deftly shows Mr. Pennewell developing his craft by taking risks with musical choices and movement phrases in relationship to the music, lighting, and costuming. Pennewell’s work demonstrates his abillity to incorporate each dancer’s individual strengths into his choreography. Mr. Pennewell also has a critical understanding of Garth Fagan Dance as a cutting-edge contemporary modern dance company; he successfully combines his creative process and the unique elements of the Fagan Technique with sophisticated concepts and movement invention.

To his sons Lucien & Ellington, Love & Peace!
ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION
The Joyce Theater Foundation ("The Joyce," Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for over three decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther’s clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 400 U.S.-based and international companies. The Joyce has also expanded its reach beyond its Chelsea home through off-site presentations at venues ranging in scope from Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, to Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center, and to outdoor programming in spaces such as Hudson River Park. To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (K–12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists. The Joyce’s annual season of about 48 weeks of dance now includes over 340 performances for audiences in excess of 150,000 patrons. Visit Joyce.org for more information.
FUNDERS
Many Thanks to The Joyce's Institutional Funders for Keeping Us Moving Forward
An abundance of gratitude to Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Representative Jerrold Nadler, and Representative Nydia M. Velázquez for their visionary leadership that established the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant program, which has helped make the reopening of The Joyce Theater and the reemergence of many dance companies possible.

VISION STATEMENT
The Joyce Theater Foundation is committed to fostering and supporting a diverse and inclusive environment, both on and off stage. We embrace and celebrate diversity in all its forms, and value the rich experiences and perspectives that arise from differences in race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, religion, age, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and cognitive and physical ability.
We strive to counteract the social injustices and racism that exist within our communities, our nation, and our world. Our aim as an organization is to embody the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice.
To achieve this, we will:
• Create and implement proactive diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice initiatives;
• Establish and maintain a culture of safe sharing, intentional listening, learning, and growth;
• Engage with and support disenfranchised communities by sharing information and resources and ensuring accessibility;
• Develop metrics and conduct regular reviews of our programs and policies to hold ourselves accountable and shift as neededs.
With these goals in place and our Vision Statement in mind, we are dedicated to the continued learning and growth needed to foster an inclusive environment for all. This is an ongoing process and by nature will be an evolving statement.
LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
The Joyce Theater operates on the Lenape island of Manhahtaan (Mannahatta) and acknowledges that it was founded upon the stolen land and erasure of many Indigenous communities. This acknowledgement demonstrates our institution’s commitment to the process of dismantling the legacies of colonialism and cultural imperialism.
We acknowledge the ongoing violence towards Indigenous people through systemic inequality. We pay our respect to the Indigenous peoples who lived and continue to live upon this land, and whose rich history, artistic practices, and spirituality are tied to this land. It is within our responsibility as a cultural institution and our commitment to diversity and inclusion to embody a commitment to Indigenous rights and cultural equity.
We sincerely invite you as an audience member to take a moment to reflect on the history and legacy of displacement, migration, and settlement.
It is our intention to work with local Native American arts councils to better inform our land acknowledgment practices and anticipate that it will evolve over time.
