Olivier Tarpaga Dance Project

“An extraordinary, distilled piece of dance and music”

- The New York Times

Olivier Tarpaga is a dynamic artist who divides his time between Burkina Faso and the United States. For Dust, choreographer and composer, Tarpaga finds inspiration in his ancestral home, the north of Burkina Faso, now occupied and living under the shadow of jihadists. Womenface abductions and with their children seek refuge from the violence and abuse. Dust takes the audience through the complicated journey of resistance, empathy, and courage. Created and performed to live score with five musicians and seven dancers gives voice and body to the stories of these uprooted lives. Dust chronicles both the horror of this human tragedy, the strength and beauty of resilience, and the promise of hope.

STATEMENT OF INTENT

This was not the intention I had for my next piece. I had been planning to explore my interest in how African names of places or people tend to resonate with things that happen in the course of the place or the person’s life, causing me to question our ability to see into the future. For example, my brother is named Sararé Pasaloum, which means “rain has a purpose.” His name rang like a bell when he died on rainy day in the middle of the dry season. I was getting ready to travel to the district where my father is buried, which is called “Zink Zugu,” which means “hold your head up.” However, I was told it was too dangerous to visit my father’s grave, because jihadists have taken over the region. Since I could not do my original research, I turned my attention to what is really going on there, which is that there is now a refugee camp for women and children in the city of Kaya, my birthplace. So the whole concept of the piece changed. Now the necessity is to give voice to those displaced people. In the midst of this ideological and political chaos, the women cannot bloom. This project reflects on our routine disregard of tragedy, death, and displacement; our misconceptions of motherhood, womanhood, and feminism. This work looks beyond the horror and tragedy by channeling the strength and beauty of this displaced population. I want to take audiences on a long dusty journey of courage, empathy, and timeless hope. This project is responding to globally-impactful political situations, touching on religious extremism, that are developing in real time. This project will focus on the matter as it affects the women of Burkina Faso, specifically—but it is a matter for global consideration. I hope that by giving voice to the struggles of Burkinabe women this will bring a recognizable and personal humanity to the issues, raise empathy, and contribute to greater understanding among audiences around the world.

ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION

The Joyce Theater Foundation ("The Joyce," Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for over three decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther’s clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 400 U.S.-based and international companies. The Joyce has also expanded its reach beyond its Chelsea home through off-site presentations at venues ranging in scope from Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, to Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center, and to outdoor programming in spaces such as Hudson River Park. To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (K–12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists. The Joyce’s annual season of about 48 weeks of dance now includes over 340 performances for audiences in excess of 150,000 patrons. Visit Joyce.org for more information.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The Joyce Theater operates on the Lenape island of Manhahtaan (Mannahatta) and acknowledges that it was founded upon the stolen land and erasure of many Indigenous communities. This acknowledgement demonstrates our institution’s commitment to the process of dismantling the legacies of colonialism and cultural imperialism.

We acknowledge the ongoing violence towards Indigenous people through systemic inequality. We pay our respect to the Indigenous peoples who lived and continue to live upon this land, and whose rich history, artistic practices, and spirituality are tied to this land. It is within our responsibility as a cultural institution and our commitment to diversity and inclusion to embody a commitment to Indigenous rights and cultural equity.

We sincerely invite you as an audience member to take a moment to reflect on the history and legacy of displacement, migration, and settlement.

It is our intention to work with local Native American arts councils to better inform our land acknowledgment practices and anticipate that it will evolve over time.
