The SERGIO BERNAL DANCE COMPANY, globally celebrated as “exhilarating and enchanting” (The Guardian), was formed with the purpose of ensuring Spanish Dance and flamenco continue to evolve. The company melds the bravado and speed of Spanish flamenco with the grace and precision of ballet, pushing both forms to a new frontier.
SERGIO BERNAL began his dancing career in 2002 at the Real Conservatorio de Danza de Madrid, where he graduated with top marks. His professional career began when he joined Rafael Aguilar’s company as a principal dancer and later joined the Workshop of the National Ballet of Spain. In 2009, he was part of the Carlos Saura company and toured internationally with Flamenco Hoy. In 2012, he joined the National Ballet of Spain as a soloist, becoming a principal dancer in 2016. In recent years, he has traveled the world dancing in the most renowned international star galas with Plisétskaya, Rojo, Somova, Obraztsova, Nuñez y Polunin among others. In his repertoire, he dances The three cornered hat, Fantasía Galaica, Puerta de Tierra, Zapateado de Sarasate, Eritaña (Antonio Ruiz Soler); Bolero (Rafael Aguilar); Bolero (Granero); The Swan, The last encounter and Concierto Andaluz (Ricardo Cue); Electra (Antonio Ruz); Apollo (Balanchine). He dances his own choreographies: Overture, Ser, Folia of gentlemen, Orgia, Bolero, Histoire du soldat, and Petrushka In September 2019, he left the National Ballet of Spain to form his own company together with Ricardo Cue. His first production, A Night with Sergio Bernal, premiered in Sochi, Russia, along with Joaquín de Luz and Miriam Mendoza. In January of that year, he was a special guest artist at the English National Ballet’s 70th anniversary celebration directed by Tamara Rojo at the Coliseum Theater in London. In October 2020, he opened his second production, SER, at the Teatros del Canal, Madrid. Sergio has been touring both productions around Europe since January 2022 and is thrilled to introduce them to US audiences.
Ricardo Cue is a dance director, dancer, choreographer, coach, and impresario. Ricardo studied in Havana, Madrid, and New York where he lived for fifteen years and studied dance and history of dance with Doris Hering at NYU. There, he worked with Balanchine, Tudor, Graham, and Ailey. In Madrid, in 1982, he joined the team of direction of Ballet National de Espana, Classical, and Flamenco and presented this company at the NY MET with Medea. In 1986, he became adviser of the Ministry of Culture of Spain. As a private impresario, he presents in Spain the leading dance companies of the world. Ricardo works and presents the world’s most important ballet and flamenco companies all over the world and is an artistic advisor and entrepreneur for Maya Plisetskaya. In 1992, he founded his own Flamenco Company ”Les Geants du flamenco” at the Champs Elysees of Paris, creating and directing Cibayí with J. Cortés, Lola Greco y Adrián which turned into J. C. Ballet Flamenco and toured the world. He discovers, instructs, and directs the careers of the ballet greats in Spain such as Trinidad Sevillano, Arantxa Argüelles, Joaquín Cortés, Ángel Corella, Tamara Rojo, Igor Yebra and Sergio Bernal. Ricardo Cue has choreographed Cibayí premiered at the Theater Champs Elyseès in Paris, Alexei in San Petersburgo, Antínoo in Merida’s Roman Theatre, Carmen in Palermo, Zambra at the Bucharest Opera, The Swan at the Bolshoi Theatre, Snow White, 1 hour ballet 30m for Tamara Rojo, (DVD en Deutsche Gramaphone), The Last Encounter for Greco and Velasco, and Concierto andaluz for Greco and Sergio Bernal, Preciosa and the wind in the Granada`s Festival, the opera El Greco in Athens and Salomé for the Wilde play. He lectures about dance in the universities of Madrid, Oviedo and Seville. The Museum Reina Sofia, Madrid, Ateneo of Madrid and the Vaganova School of Saint Petersburg. In 2005, he presented the candidacy for Maya Plisetskaya and Tamara Rojo for the Prize Principe de Asturias and it was granted to both in the Award for the Arts.
Cristina Cazorla was born in Madrid in 1997. She trained at the Mariemma Royal Professional Dance Conservatory and graduated in 2015 with the extraordinary award of her class. She continued her higher dance studies at the Maria de Ávila Higher Conservatory of Dance specializing in Spanish Dance Choreography, graduating in 2020. In 2021, she obtained the Professional Certificate in Dynamization, Programming and Development of Cultural Actions from the Aspasia group. In 2016, she danced with the Spanish National Ballet in the production Tribute to Antonio Ruiz Soler under the direction of Antonio Najarro. Throughout her career, she has been part of the best companies: Sergio Bernal Dance Company, Antonio Najarro Cía, Sara Cano Cía, Aída Gómez, Antonio Márquez, Carmen Cortés, Enclave Español and Ibérica de Danza. In many of these companies, she developed soloist and leading roles directly linked to the Bolera School. Her career specializes in this style, being a guest artist at different galas, concerts, and events, highlighting her participation in the Campaigns for World Tourism Day 2020 and International Flamenco Day 2021 at the Museo Del Prado alongside Jesús Carmona, Patricia Guerrero, Olga Pericet, Eduardo Guerrero, among others. As a choreographer, she received various recognitions in choreographic competitions, including a 2019 special mention for "making visible, recovering and maintaining the technique of academic language and the stylistic forms that are characteristic of the traditional Bolera School." She was a guest choreographer at the Maria de Ávila Conservatory of Dance in 2022 and at the Meeting with the Masters 2021.
Carlos Romero graduated with Honors and Extraordinary Prize from the Mariemma Royal Professional Dance Conservatory in Madrid in 2011. After six years at the Spanish National Ballet performing soloist and principal dancer roles and having performed in the best companies in Spain, Carlos Romero decided to take a leap forward in his career and create his own brand. In 2018, he premiered his first show MuDanza Show which was programmed for four months at the Teatro Arlequín on Gran Vía, moving on, in 2019, to the Teatro Fígaro in Madrid of the Smedia group and with which he toured Spain. Carlos has participated as a choreographer and guest artist in different shows at several Madrid Fashion Weeks (MBFW Madrid) alongside designers Maison Mesa, Oteyza and Duyos. He choreographed Sara Hurtado and Kirill Khalyavin. The main roles of the play The Millers in the play The Three-Cornered Hat are played by the Antonio Marquez Company in 2019. During quarantine he created the music video A World Without Artists together with Víctor Elías and
Antonio Najarro (former director of the National Ballet of Spain) joins the Company as principal dancers in the show Alento and as soloist dancers in Querencia. He is also a Principal Dancer and choreographer for Aaron Vivancos’ show Woman. He choreographed and participated as a guest artist in the show Sounds of Spain by pianist Manolo Carrasco. Currently, Carlos Romero directed the EDP (Professional Dance Studio) and directs the CDE (Spanish dance company).
Desiré Paredes is a singer from Madrid in love with music, the emotional journey, and the beauty of sounds. Currently, she is working as a writer and composer on her next EP, breaking the ice with her first single and video clip La tapa. An active, fresh and danceable song that invites us to review our essence and authenticity as individuals, affirming that difference makes us unique.
Daniel Jurado was born on March 3rd, 1972, in the city of Seville (Spain). He was raised in a musical environment where musicians from different disciplines always flowed into his house, from rock to flamenco. This confluence of artists, such as Rafael Riqueni and Raimundo Amador, had an inspiring influence on the decision to dedicate himself professionally to music. His professional career began at an early age. Parallel to his studies at the Conservatory, he joined different rock and flamenco groups. In 1996, he joined the contemporary flamenco musical group Cañadú, with which he toured the country with countless performances. Moreover, he performed the music for the emerging Madrid ballet Nuevo Ballet Español, touring around the world and taking part in the musical composition of eight shows at the time very successful. When he moved to Madrid, he had the possibility of creating music for a wide variety of shows and renowned artists, such as Emilio Ochando, Jesus Carmona, Sergio Bernal, and was required for different international tours of flamenco artists, such as Patricia Guerrero, Juana Amaya, Karime Amaya, Olga Pericet and Antonio Canales. In 2011, he received the award for Best Music for Dance at the XX Spanish and Flamenco Dance contest, as well as for Talent Madrid as composer of the winning piece by Emilio Ochando. He graduated from the Arturo Soria Professional Conservatory of Flamenco and Classical Guitar and received a Specialist Music Degree from the UNIR university, The International University of La Rioja. He currently alternates between his studies and touring with various companies like Companīa Carlos Rodriguez (Eterno), Sergio Benal Dance Company (A Night with Sergio Bernal, SER, Rodin); with Ana Agraz, on a project conceived with her (Sinestesia), and Emilio Ochando (Clásica Tradición, Sirocco).
Javier Valdunciel was born and raised in Madrid. He is a specialist in flamenco percussion and folklore from the Iberian Peninsula. He is a professor at Casa Patas and currently at the Centro Superior Músic. Creativa, both in Madrid. He works as a session musician in different tablaos in Madrid (where tablaos are either the venues where flamenco shows are performed than the platform floors on which a flamenco dancer performs) and on national and international tours with the companies of Antonio Márquez, Belén López, Antonio Najarro, Casa Patas Foundation, José Porcel, Flamencos en route, and with Sergio Bernal Dance Company in A Night with Sergio Bernal, SER, and Rodin

The Joyce Theater Foundation ("The Joyce," Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for more than four decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther’s clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 475 U.S.-based and international companies. The Joyce has also expanded its reach beyond its Chelsea home through off-site presentations at venues ranging in scope from Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, to Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center, and to outdoor programming in spaces such as Hudson River Park. To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (1st–12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists. The Joyce’s annual season of about 48 weeks of dance now includes over 300 performances for audiences of over 100,000. Visit Joyce.org for more information.
An abundance of gratitude to Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Representative Jerrold Nadler, and Representative Nydia M. Velázquez for their visionary leadership that established the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant program, which made the reopening of The Joyce Theater in 2021 and the reemergence of many dance companies possible.

The Joyce Theater is a member of APAP, Dance/NYC, and Dance/USA.
The Joyce Theater operates on the Lenape island of Manhahtaan (Mannahatta) and acknowledges that it was founded upon the stolen land and erasure of many Indigenous communities. This acknowledgement demonstrates our institution’s commitment to the process of dismantling the legacies of colonialism and cultural imperialism.
We acknowledge the ongoing violence towards Indigenous people through systemic inequality. We pay our respect to the Indigenous peoples who lived and continue to live upon this land, and whose rich history, artistic practices, and spirituality are tied to this land. It is within our responsibility as a cultural institution and our commitment to diversity and inclusion to embody a commitment to Indigenous rights and cultural equity.
We sincerely invite you as an audience member to take a moment to reflect on the history and legacy of displacement, migration, and settlement.
It is our intention to work with local Native American arts councils to better inform our land acknowledgment practices and anticipate that it will evolve over time.
