Originally commissioned by the American Dance Festival in 1988, State of Darkness challenges Stravinsky’s cacophonous “Le Sacre du Printemps” (The Rite of Spring) with an intense 35-minute solo performance of relentless fervency, technical precision, and fearless abandon. Fenley reimagined the commanding score as the sonic landscape for a solo journey, rather than the usual ensemble interpretations.
A NOTE FROM THE CHOREOGRAPHER by Molissa Fenley "The title State of Darkness was taken from a line from Marcel Proust's Remembrance of Things Past. The writer (the reader in imagination) is awakened in the night after having fallen asleep before realizing that he was ready for sleep - as he awakens he finds himself in a state of darkness: 'I would be astonished to find myself in a state of darkness, pleasant and restful enough for my eyes, but even more, perhaps, for my mind, to which it appeared incomprehensible, without a cause, something dark indeed.' And I thought to myself, incomprehensible indeed, what causes a state of darkness? For me, in October 2020, it is the state of the environment, the increase in the amount of endangered species, the amount of land lost through fire, through fracking, the loss of environmental laws and regulations that guard against the corporate state, rules that protect the land, the water, the air. It is the state of the eroding of democracy, the deterioration of laws that have guarded and protected all human rights, it is the condition of a state that continues to allow racism to remain within its founded systems. It is the condition of the state that fractionally questions yet its majority quells change. It is the condition of the state that allows for death because of not responding to scientific knowledge of how to curtail a pandemic. State of Darkness is a rite of passage: at the end of the work, the dancer steps forward into the light, into a state of insight, illuminated by intuition, imagination, and revelation. To work on State of Darkness, with this wonderful group of dancers, to embody the movement again myself in order to teach them, to watch how they have considered the dance within their own sensibilities, from their training, with their humanity, with their beliefs has been very fulfilling. Our rehearsals have been of discovery, of each dancer surmounting the necessary energy, of revealing themselves. Each dancer an individual and each committed. But let’s go back a moment and put together a timeline of this particular occasion of State of Darkness at The Joyce: On April 30, while sheltering in place on the Mills College campus where I was teaching my very last semester after 21 years, I received an email from a person named Ross LeClair with a subject heading: "Joyce Theater - State of Darkness idea." Of course, I immediately opened the email! Ross outlines the idea by saying, 'Our Executive Director Linda Shelton had the idea to present your work State Of Darkness, performed by a rotating group of New Yorkbased dancers in August/September. We feel a connection between the work and The Joyce (your performance, Pacific Northwest Ballet, etc), but also feel that it would be quite powerful and resonant in this moment.' Ross continues to explain that the dance would be performed for an audience of a tenth of the size of their seating capability, socially distanced within the theater. Would I be interested? Of course my response was a resounding YES! I choreographed and premiered State of Darkness in 1988. Subsequently, I danced the work many times throughout the United States, Korea, and Australia until 1993. There were previously eight dancers that knew this work, and now there are seven more! The original eight are: Peter Boal, Rebecca Chaleff, Rachel Foster, Angelica Generosa, James Moore, Jonathan Porretta, Matthew Renko, and myself.
A NOTE FROM THE CHOREOGRAPHER To prepare for teaching the dance to the new Joyce dancers (Jared Brown, Lloyd Knight, Sara Mearns, Shamel Pitts, Annique Roberts, Cassandra Trenary, and Michael Trusnovec), I started re-learning State of Darkness in June while in residency at the Dance HUB in Santa Barbara California. I traveled to San Diego to complete the reconstruction of the dance with Rebecca Chaleff during a one-week rehearsal period. We continued to rehearse together through digital platforms once I returned to Santa Barbara, with Rebecca serving as the co-reconstructor and rehearsal director. Rehearsals started with the New York dancers here in NYC on August 17, 2020. One or two of the dancers would be with me at The Joyce Theater, the other five would be in their own spaces (some in studios, some in their living rooms, some in their bedrooms), but all connected and able to communicate with one another through Zoom. The dancers present on the stage changed each day so that everyone had both personal time and stage time. Rebecca Chaleff joined all of our rehearsals via Zoom, bringing both insights into the work’s meanings and forms as well as offering personal knowledge of the execution of the dance’s movement vocabulary. Her help has been invaluable!"
THANK YOU: To Jared Brown, Lloyd Knight, Sara Mearns, Shamel Pitts, Annique Roberts, Cassandra Trenary, and Michael Trusnovec for their dedication and commitment to this project! The prospect of learning State of Darkness from video, on Zoom, with a few in person rehearsals at first seemed insurmountable – and now we are ready for performance! To Rebecca Chaleff for her conscientious rehearsal direction from the very beginning ensuring that all of us are experiencing the choreography and dancing to our utmost potential. To Ross LeClair for his constant belief in this project and amazing abilities to getting us all together and carrying us through. To Linda Shelton for initiating the project, for imagining that State of Darkness should once more be seen and experienced. To Meghan Rose Murphy for her excellent stage management. To Jimmy Ortiz and David Matos for taking care of us as we all navigated through COVID-19 protocols! To Jeff Segal and Kelly Atallah for taking care of the stage and being sure we are always comfortable. To David Moodey for bringing forward his original lighting design from 1988 to 2020. To Marc Happel for dressing us in comfort and style. To Janice Braun, Director of Special Collections, Olin Library, Mills College for sending the State of Darkness choreography and music notes (1988) and the original costume (1988) from the Molissa Fenley Archive.
ABOUT THE CHOREOGRAPHER by Molissa Fenley "I have choreographed and performed my work since 1977. My work has been choreographed for ensembles, (my own dance company as well as for others by commission) and as solo works created in collaboration with contemporary visual artists, composers, and poets. Many of the works, although not in my current repertoire, are still foremost in my mind and personal body memory. State of Darkness, choreographed in 1988, was the first solo choreographed to Igor Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du Printemps. The work was commissioned by and premiered at the American Dance Festival. I subsequently performed the work throughout the world for five years after its completion. One of my most memorable performances was at the Brisbane Biennial in 1991 where I danced the solo work with the Brisbane Symphony Orchestra, one dancer with 114 musicians! And as I write this, I am once again in rehearsal teaching the dance to seven new dancers. The Joyce Theater has gathered a stellar cast of modern and ballet dancers to learn the work to present a series of live streamed performances at the theater as part of The Joyce’s reopening plans. It is a wonder to be involved in this project: the revival of one of my seminal works now 32 years later. I was born in Las Vegas, Nevada in 1954. I grew up in Ibadan, Nigeria traveling there with my family in 1961, completing all of my early education there in International Schools and my last two years of high school in Spain. Growing up in Nigeria surrounded by and daily exploring the dense tropical rain forest began my love for the natural world. I returned to the US in 1971 to study dance at Mills College in Oakland, California. Upon graduation in 1975, I moved to New York and founded my dance company in 1977. We have performed throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, South America, Europe, Australia, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Performing throughout the world has been an honor, each performance a chance to experience a different cultural response. My work has been commissioned by the American Dance Festival, the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Next Wave Festival, the Dia Art Foundation, Jacob’s Pillow, The Joyce Theater, Lincoln Center, The New National Theater of Tokyo, National Institute of Performing Arts in Seoul, The Kitchen, and Dance Theater Workshop/New York Live Arts. Both Cenotaph and State of Darkness were awarded a Bessie for Choreography in 1985 and 1988 respectively. In 2008, I was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship and named a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome. The experience of the AAR was eye-opening, both in being in conversation with scholars from many different disciplines, and from being physically present in front of the history of the Etruscan and Roman civilizations through place, through sculpture, through frescoes. My visits to Japan, through travel/ research awards from the Asian Cultural Council, primarily to Tokyo, Kyoto, and Nara, have been also very illuminating. Being introduced to the traditional aesthetic of Noh, Kabuki, and Gagaku have led to many of my dance explorations. Finally, as Professor of Dance at Mills College, from 1999-2020, I have been active in the mentorship of younger artists, a pleasure and privilege certainly. Rhythm Field: The Dance of Molissa Fenley published by Seagull Press/University of Chicago in 2015 is in the libraries of most universities and colleges in the US. In continuing to work, my most recent commission is to participate in the UCLA CAP project of presenting Choreographers’ Scores, drawings and writings of work created while sheltering-in-place. I have just sent the movement phrases created for a new piece: Pipes Going Nowhere."

ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION The Joyce Theater Foundation ("The Joyce," Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for over three decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther’s clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 400 U.S.-based and international
companies. The Joyce has also expanded its reach beyond its Chelsea home through offsite presentations at venues ranging in scope from Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, to Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center, and to outdoor programming in spaces such as Hudson River Park. To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (K–12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists. The Joyce’s annual season of about 48 weeks of dance now includes over 340 performances for audiences in excess of 150,000 patrons. Visit Joyce.org for more information.
