ABOUT THE PROGRAM What does it mean to be out in front of you tonight, to show up for you after so long? SPC has been coming to The Joyce each spring for almost 40 years— a rite, a contract as celebration. To have that interrupted by COVID is like having our oxygen taken away. WE ARE BACK and breathing now! We come before you tonight to show you that we have survived, that we are still here, in some ways stronger than ever, and that dance is a kind of social glue that keeps all us connected. We want to remind you of what we can do and of the possibility that we can challenge you and lift you up with dance and our collaborations. When I was plotting the “comeback", it was natural to turn to Bloom, a work I originally made in 2006, in collaboration with Rufus Wainwright and the Young People’s Chorus of New York City (YPC). Rufus and YPC are singing songs of possibility and transformation through the poetry of Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson. I've modified Bloom for this moment, but this is but a dance of regeneration and hope and my guess is that we all need a good dose of that right now. New New Prayer For Now started as a pandemic film made up at the Petronio Residency Center in a “bubble residency”, isolated and protected, when dancing in the world at large was impossible. I started the Petronio Residency Center in Round Top, New York a few years before as a lab for the next generation of dance makers. As it turned out, it was a vital and singular resource for many of us to maintain a practice through this impossible time. Being able to work there, even intermittently, was literally lifesaving mentally and physically. When we were able to rejoin the world again, we completed this work and transformed it into a live performance meditation on connection: connection to space, to each other, and to you. Monstah Black, who composed the score for New New Prayer For Now has been one of the gifts of the shutdown. During our isolation, I got to connect with him while he devised this score that also employs songs of hope and care (Balm in Gilead and Bridge Over Troubled Water). We needed these songs and his music during the lockdown. I hope you will understand why and enjoy them with us. And finally we have a homage to my mentor Trisha Brown, a legendary choreographer of her time. Working with Trisha in my early career was such a formative experience and we all miss her deeply (see her Trisha Brown Dance Company here at The Joyce next week). Her dance Group Primary Accumulation (1973) is a master class in the accumulation of simple gestures on the female body. This re-staging is part of our Bloodlines initiative now in its eighth year, a way to reexamine some of the artists that have touched me so personally and deeply at the outset of my own career. While Trisha is no longer amongst us, her work is, and for me personally, she is never far away. - Stephen Petronio

Lyrics in Bloom Unseen Buds by Walt Whitman Unseen buds, infinite, hidden well, Under the snow and ice, under the darkness, in every square or cubic inch, Germinal, exquisite, in delicate lace, microscopic, unborn, Like babes in wombs, latent, folded, compact, sleeping; Billions of billions, and trillions of trillions of them waiting, (On earth and in the sea — the universe — the stars there in the heavens,) Urging slowly, surely forward, forming endless, And waiting ever more, forever more behind. One's-Self I Sing by Walt Whitman One’s-Self I sing, a simple separate person, Yet utter the word Democratic, the word En-Masse. Of physiology from top to toe I sing, Not physiognomy alone nor brain alone is worthy for the Muse, I say the Form complete is worthier far, The Female equally with the Male I sing. Of Life immense in passion, pulse, and power, Cheerful, for freest action form’d under the laws divine, The Modern Man I sing. “Hope” is the thing with feathers by Emily Dickinson "Hope" is the thing with feathers That perches in the soul And sings the tune without the words And never stops - at all And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard And sore must be the storm That could abash the little Bird That kept so many warm I’ve heard it in the chillest land And on the strangest Sea Yet - never - in Extremity, It asked a crumb - of me.
ABOUT THE COMPANY The mission of Stephen Petronio Company (SPC) is to support the vision of choreographer Stephen Petronio, which includes the creation and presentation of his existing and new works, alongside legacy initiatives meant to preserve the history of postmodern dance lineage, while also advancing its future through new works that honor and extend the history and offer a platform for a greater inclusivity of artistic voices. Founded in 1984, Stephen Petronio Company has performed in 40 countries throughout the world, including numerous New York City engagements with 25 seasons at The Joyce Theater. The Company has been commissioned by Dance Umbrella Festival/London, Hebbel Theater/Berlin, Scène National de Sceaux, Festival d’Automne à Paris, CNDC Angers/France, The Holland Festival, Festival Montpellier Danse, Danceworks UK Ltd, Festival de Danse–Cannes, and in the U.S. by San Francisco Performances, The Joyce Theater, UCSB Arts & Lectures, Wexner Center for the Arts, Walker Art Center, and White Bird, among others and is the recipient of a Dancing Lab residency at the National Center for Choreography at the University of Akron (NCCAkron). The 2014–15 season marked the first incarnation of Bloodlines, a project of Stephen Petronio Company to honor and embody a lineage of American postmodern dance masters. Distinguished for creating original languages that exemplify the highest level of artistic excellence displayed through extreme physical and conceptual rigor, these artists have had a profound impact on Petronio’s own artistic path. To date, the Company has restaged 12 works, by Merce Cunningham, Trisha Brown, Anna Halprin, Yvonne Rainer, Rudy Perez, and Steve Paxton, receiving two New York Dance and Performance “Bessie” Award nominations for the 2017 Bloodlines season. The juxtapositions of Bloodlines repertory alongside Petronio’s works offers audiences an experiential insight into the evolution of this strand of creativity in American choreography. This season is the third iteration of Bloodlines (future), looking towards future generations of artists and heirs to the Bloodlines lineage and how these historical masters frame the future of modern dance. In 2017, Stephen Petronio Company expanded its focus on American postmodern dance to explore the meaning of legacy and its impact on the future and sustainability of this most ephemeral art form, establishing the Petronio Residency Center (PRC) which provides a safe haven for intensive developmental choreographic research. Located in the Hudson Valley, PRC supports future choreographic invention in the field with artist residencies and education initiatives. The program has since served over 100 artists, becoming part of a growing ecosystem in the U.S. dedicated to fostering a new model for the future of contemporary dance. In 2021, with the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, PRC established a permanent conservation easement for 77 acres of the 172-acre property, designating The Doris Duke Preserve at Round Top, Greene County as a preserve in perpetuity, putting PRC at the forefront of regional conservation efforts. Sheltered in and enlivened by the restorative and inspirational power of the natural world, artists at PRC are invited to immerse themselves in a pristine natural environment, benefitting from a residency and a retreat with unconstrained time and resources to make new work, with no deliverables required, and unfettered access to an extraordinary natural landscape. YOUNG PEOPLE’S CHORUS OF NEW YORK CITY (YPC) (Choir) is a multicultural youth chorus internationally renowned for its superb virtuosity, brilliant showmanship, and innovative model of diversity. YPC’s spectacular artistry has been showcased in award-winning performances around the world. With repertoire that spans Renaissance and classical traditions through gospel, folk, jazz, pop, contemporary, and world music, YPC also continually invigorates its catalogue of music for young voices by commissioning pieces of diverse music from many of the most distinguished and emerging composers of our time. The
chorus frequently inspires invitations from a wide range of cultural institutions and festivals, and recently performed in front of a national televised audience during the 9/11 20th Anniversary Memorial, at the renowned Global Citizen Live festival this fall, at the Saks Fifth Avenue Holiday Light Show alongside guest speaker Michelle Obama, and at the 95th annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Among YPC’s many awards is America’s highest honor for youth programs, a National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award, which was presented to members of YPC at the White House. Under the direction of YPC’s Associate Artistic Director, Elizabeth Núñez, YPC also earned the distinction of “Choir of the World” in July 2018 at the International Choral Kathaumixw (Powell River, British Columbia), marking the first time a North American chorus has ever won this title in the 34-year history of Kathaumixw. YPC has received a Chorus America Education Outreach Award, two Chorus America/ ASCAP Awards for Adventurous Programming and a 2017 Margaret Hillis Award for Choral Excellence.

ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION The Joyce Theater Foundation ("The Joyce," Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for over three decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther’s clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 400 U.S.-based and international companies. The Joyce has also expanded its reach beyond its Chelsea home through off-site presentations at venues ranging in scope from Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, to Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center, and to outdoor programming in spaces such as Hudson River Park. To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (K–12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists. The Joyce’s annual season of about 48 weeks of dance now includes over 340 performances for audiences in excess of 150,000 patrons. Visit Joyce.org for more information.
FUNDERS Many Thanks to The Joyce's Institutional Funders for Keeping Us Moving Forward An abundance of gratitude to Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Representative Jerrold Nadler, and Representative Nydia M. Velázquez for their visionary leadership that established the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant program, which has helped make the reopening of The Joyce Theater and the reemergence of many dance companies possible.

ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION VISION STATEMENT
LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
The Joyce Theater Foundation is committed to fostering and supporting a diverse and inclusive environment, both on and off stage. We embrace and celebrate diversity in all its forms, and value the rich experiences and perspectives that arise from differences in race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, religion, age, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and cognitive and physical ability.
The Joyce Theater operates on the Lenape island of Manhahtaan (Mannahatta) and acknowledges that it was founded upon the stolen land and erasure of many Indigenous communities. This acknowledgement demonstrates our institution’s commitment to the process of dismantling the legacies of colonialism and cultural imperialism.
We strive to counteract the social injustices and racism that exist within our communities, our nation, and our world. Our aim as an organization is to embody the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice. To achieve this, we will:
We acknowledge the ongoing violence towards Indigenous people through systemic inequality. We pay our respect to the Indigenous peoples who lived and continue to live upon this land, and whose rich history, artistic practices, and spirituality are tied to this land. It is within our responsibility as a cultural institution and our commitment to diversity and inclusion to embody a commitment to Indigenous rights and cultural equity.
• Create and implement proactive diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice initiatives; • Establish and maintain a culture of safe sharing, intentional listening, learning, and growth; • Engage with and support disenfranchised communities by sharing information and resources and ensuring accessibility; • Develop metrics and conduct regular reviews of our programs and policies to hold ourselves accountable and shift as neededs.
We sincerely invite you as an audience member to take a moment to reflect on the history and legacy of displacement, migration, and settlement. It is our intention to work with local Native American arts councils to better inform our land acknowledgment practices and anticipate that it will evolve over time.
With these goals in place and our Vision Statement in mind, we are dedicated to the continued learning and growth needed to foster an inclusive environment for all. This is an ongoing process and by nature will be an evolving statement.
