Prophet The Hatmaker’s Son

by Douglas Gillies

Margaret Mead called him “the most brilliant man in the UN.”

Robert Muller experienced the devastation of two World Wars. One night while standing in a dark battle field weeping for all the young people whose lives had been squandered, he swore that he would devote his life to peace. Robert left everything behind and joined the UN in its third year and spent the next 40 years following that dream he never abandoned. His enthusiasm and optimism led him to became known as a prophet of hope.

This book is a treasure-chest of largely unknown events based on extensive interviews with Robert and his experiences with world leaders.

Taking one of the eleven chapters each month, this book club will have time to savor Robert’s development from intern to the Assistant Secretary-General, his philosophy, as well as the early development of the United Nations.

To bring this book alive, the weekly discussions will be led by people intimately familiar with Robert and his work, including his wife, Barbara Gaughen-Muller, the author, Douglas Gillies, and the Hon. Douglas Roche, O.C., former Canadian Senator, parliamentarian, diplomat, author, and long-time friend and associate of Robert’s. (Click here for podcast with Douglas Roche.)

“Dream always of a peaceful, warless, disarmed world.” – Robert Muller

“Since the beginning of time, knowledge, culture and wisdom have been handed down through the generations using story and song, an oral tradition. “Before the written word, humanity gathered around the fire to hear music and the news of the day. Songs were sung and tales were told to inform and entertain people everywhere. “We come together now in the tradition of story keepers to bring attention to the condition of our planet, bring your curiosity and gather around this new digital campfire. “When we stop and listen to the people who have been here the longest, we gain a new perspective on our relationship with mother earth.”

Art: A Trojan Horse for Peace

“Art has considerable potential in peacebuilding, not only in the conflict resolution field but also in post-conflict reconciliation.

“Defying all linguistic boundaries, it is considered a universal language and therefore an ideal resource to understand the perspectives of others, particularly their perspective on a given conflict. Art can also directly nurture a peace process by providing a voice to marginalized or oppressed groups, whilst enhancing the relevance and legitimacy of the process. “The use of art can be strategic, particularly during negotiations and mediation processes when verbal communication reaches its limits.” Read the rest of this article by Celia Chambelland.
