Sherecentlystated, "Thisdiagnosishas onlymadememoredeterminedthaneverto continuetoendthedeadlyeffectsoffossil fuels.Whilemostofusknowthatfossilfuels aretheprimarycauseoftheclimatecrisis, manymaynotknowthatfossilfuelemissions alsocausecanceraswellasothermajor healthproblemslikebirthdefects,childhood leukemia,heartattacks,strokes,lungdisease andpretermbirth.

Inherfirstweekas President-electofRotary International, JenniferJonesreceivedanearly morningcallfromaRotarianwhowantedafavor, admittedlyalong-shotfavor.Itwasthe desperatedaysofevacuationfromKabulandthe callerwastryingtohelpanendangeredyoung womanscholargetonaplane.Theurgencyof removingpopulationsvulnerabletotheTaliban hadcreatedachaoticcrisiswithover122,000 peoplebeingevacuatedinelevendays.

Ineverwantedtobeabusinessman.Istarted asacraftsman,makingclimbinggearformy friendsandmyself,thengotintoapparel.Aswe begantowitnesstheextentofglobalwarming andecologicaldestruction,andourown contributiontoit,Patagoniacommittedtousing ourcompanytochangethewaybusinesswas done.Ifwecoulddotherightthingwhilemaking enoughtopaythebills,wecouldinfluence customersandotherbusinesses,andmaybe changethesystemalongtheway.

Westartedwithourproducts,usingmaterials thatcausedlessharmtotheenvironment.We gaveaway1%ofsaleseachyear.Webecamea certifiedBCorpandaCaliforniabenefit corporation,writingourvaluesintoourcorporate chartersotheywouldbepreserved.More recently,in2018,wechangedthecompany’s purposeto:We’reinbusinesstosaveourhome planet.

Whilewe’redoingourbesttoaddressthe environmentalcrisis,it’snotenough.Weneeded tofindawaytoputmoremoneyintofightingthe crisiswhilekeepingthecompany’svaluesintact.

OneoptionwastosellPatagoniaanddonate allthemoney.Butwecouldn’tbesureanew ownerwouldmaintainourvaluesorkeepour teamofpeoplearoundtheworldemployed.

Anotherpathwastotakethecompanypublic. Whatadisasterthatwouldhavebeen.Even publiccompanieswithgoodintentionsareunder toomuchpressuretocreateshort-termgainat theexpenseoflong-termvitality andresponsibility.

Truthbetold,therewerenogoodoptions available.So,wecreatedourown.

Insteadof“goingpublic,”youcouldsaywe’re “goingpurpose.”Insteadofextractingvaluefrom natureandtransformingitintowealthfor investors,we’llusethewealthPatagoniacreates toprotectthesourceofallwealth.

Here’showitworks:100%ofthecompany’s votingstocktransferstothePatagoniaPurpose Trust,createdtoprotectthecompany’svalues; and100%ofthenonvotingstockhadbeengiven totheHoldfastCollective,anonprofitdedicated tofightingtheenvironmentalcrisisanddefending nature.The fundingwill comefrom Patagonia: Eachyear, themoney wemake after reinvesting inthe business willbe distributed asa dividendto helpfight thecrisis.

Despiteitsimmensity,theEarth’sresources arenotinfinite,andit’sclearwe’veexceededits limits.Butit’salsoresilient.
