Media Services Coverage Ozarks maintains a comprehensive official athletic department web site. Up-to-date information, including schedules, statistics, rosters and news releases for all ten varsity sports are provided. Biographical information for players and coaches provide in-depth coverage found only on www.eagles.ozarks.edu. In-game Live Stats from Stat Crew has been added to help fans follow games on Ozarks’ web site. Live video streaming is done for most home games. Media guides for all ten sports along with general department news, baseball-related links, Aerie Club and Hall of Fame information are found on the site. Credentials Media or photo credentials are not required for admittance to Ozarks games for working media. However, it is requested that media seeking to cover a game contact the Sports Information Director prior to the game to ensure seating at press row. Requests for seating in press row can be made at 479.979.1483 or via e-mail at jpeppas@ozarks.edu. Press Services Media guides, game programs, rosters, up-to-date results, and statistics are available to working members of the media prior to each Eagles home game. Josh Peppas is in his eleventh year as Sports Information Director at Ozarks. He additionally serves as the Assistant to the Director of Athletics. Peppas is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Sports Information Office, including maintaining the athletic web site and promoting Ozarks’ ten sports. He is an active member of College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). Peppas has had a combined twelve media guides earn “Best in the Nation” citations from CoSIDA the past four years. The cover of the 2008 women’s soccer media guide was named the nation’s best in its category, and the baseball media guide has been voted the top NCAA III guide the past three years, including earning the top award for all NCAA II and NCAA III schools in 2011. The 2010 men’s soccer media guide was voted second in the nation in its category. Peppas also produces Eagle Insider , a quarterly alumni E-Magazine for the athletic department. A native of Ozark, Ark., he earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Ozarks in 2000. He and his wife, Kelli, are the parents of Brant, Brayden and Brenden.

She is majoring in marketing and is hoping to turn her passion for sports into an eventual career. Zach Doty Chief Photographer Zach Doty is in his fourth year as the chief athletic department photographer. Doty, of Robinson, Texas, is a senior marketing/ strategic communications major. Doty is a member of the cross country team, coordinator of advancement in SCM Studio and named to the Dean’s List. Doty has been a member of the ASC All-Academic Team for both cross country and sports information. He received the American Southwest Conference Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year for men’s cross country in 2011. Prior to Ozarks, Doty worked at a Waco, Texas, ABC television affiliate and operated his professional freelance studio in Waco. While at Ozarks, Doty has interned with several nationally renowned independent advertising agencies and organizations.

Kaitlyn Williams Student Assistant Kaitlyn Williams begins her second year in the Sports Information Office as a student assistant. Williams, a senior from Clarksville, is a member of the soccer team, where she has been on the American Southwest Conference All-Academic Team for three years. She is majoring in strategic communications. Her campus involvement includes Alpha & Omega Ministries, Baptist Collegiate Ministries, the skeet shooting club, and the student foundation board. Additionally, she has served as a peer mentor. Emily Black Student Assistant Emily Black begins her first year as a student assistant. Black, a native of Clarksville, was the editor of the Clarksville High School Panther newspaper the past two years. Black was valedictorian of the 2011 graduating class at Clarksville and was also an active member of the CHS

Jimmy Clark is in his sixth year as the Athletic Director and his eleventh year as head baseball coach. As Athletic Director, he is responsible for all aspects of the athletic department, with oversight of 19 staff members. Clark was named the 2005 American Southwest Conference East Division Coach of the Year after leading the Eagles to their first winning season in nearly a decade. Clark’s 2007 club earned a spot in the playoffs for the first time since 1996. During the 2007 season, Ozarks won their first-round playoff series and advanced to the championship round of the conference tournament. It was the program’s first-ever appearance in the four-team championship round. Nine of his players earned All-Conference honors that season. Clark followed the 2007 season with even better results. The 2008 team went 32-11, the best record in school history, and made its second straight playoff appearance. The team showcased some of the most outstanding individual players in school history, with three receiving All-America honors and four receiving ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Team honors. Pitcher Curt Dixon was named Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week and signed with the Sioux City Explorers at the conclusion of the 2008 season. Clark’s 2008 team received national recognition too, earning the program’s first top-25 ranking from D3baseball.com. Ozarks was ranked as high as #14 in the poll and remained in the top-25 for most of the year. The 2009 team made its third consecutive trip to the playoffs under Clark. A former baseball standout at the University of Central Arkansas, Clark has had seven players on the prestigious Academic AllAmerica team during his tenure and numerous others on the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Team. Under Clark’s tenure, his teams have rewrote the school’s record book, as they own nearly every team offensive, defensive and pitching record. Assistant coaches/Lonnie R. Qualls Field Robert Mummey - Assistant Coach Robert Mummey is in his fourth season as an assistant coach. Mummey started for Ozarks during the 2008 season and earned All-Conference honors. Mummey was an integral part of the Eagles record-setting season in 2008. Behind Mummey’s offensive prowess, the Eagles were ranked as high as #14 in the nation and qualified for the post-season. He was among the team’s top hitters as the starting first baseman, ranking third in homers (12) and fourth in RBI (46). His steady glove in the field produced a .978 fielding percentage. The Flower Mound, Texas, native played two seasons at Cedar Valley College in Texas where he helped the team to a third-place conference finish his sophomore campaign. He graduated from Ozarks with a degree in physical education. He and his wife, Tiffany, were married in 2009. They are the parents of one son, Brantly. David Ross - Assistant Coach David Ross enters his second season as an assistant coach for Ozarks. Ross served as the head baseball coach at Clarksville High School for most of his 30-year career, producing a number of conference and district championships and leading the Panthers to the state tournament nearly every year in the 1980’s. His 1988 team captured the state title. He retired in 1991 after starting the program in 1978. Following his successful coaching career at Clarksville, the baseball field was named in his honor. He is a graduate of Ozarks. Ross and his wife, Claudine, are the parents of two - Bryan and Cindy. John Johanson - Assistant Coach John Johanson, a native of Medford, Mass., served as the head assistant coach at NCAA III Newbury College in Boston from 2009 and 2010 under current Boston College assistant coach Greg Sullivan. Johanson played at NCAA III Colby-Sawyer College in New London, N.H., where he was a three-year starter in the middle infield. In 2004, Johanson was selected to play in the Steve Buckley Oldtime Baseball game. His other coaching experience includes three years with IHB baseball. He was named the Boston Globe and the Boston Herald team Most Valuable Player his senior season at Arlington Catholic. Johanson graduated with a degree in exercise and sport science from Colby-Sawyer.

Lonnie R. Qualls

In the early 1950s, Lonnie Qualls starred in three different sports at Ozarks, including football where he earned All-Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference honors for four years and conference Back of the Year in 1953. After graduating from the university, he went on to coach at Clarksville High School and led the Panther football team to an undefeated season in 1961. In 1962, Qualls was hired to coach football at Ozarks. He coached the football program from 1962 until the college dropped the sport in 1965. Over the next 30 years, Qualls coached baseball, tennis, cross country, soccer and bowling as well as taught in the physical education program. He was named NAIA District 17 Baseball Coach of the Year in 1976 and was elected to the Ozarks Sports Hall of Fame in 1990. He retired from Ozarks in 1995 after a 33-year career at the university. Qualls and his wife Levada are both 1955 graduates of Ozarks. In 2005, the baseball field was named Lonnie R. Qualls.

Eagles Year Older; Return Nearly Every Starter A young Eagles team took their lumps throughout a frustrating season in 2011, but things are looking up as that team is now a year older and return nearly every starter for the 2012 campaign. With the 2011 season behind them, Ozarks is prepared to right the ship and make a run at the playoffs. Fueling the comeback will be a key contingent of sophomore players that saw significant action last season. It is that experience combined with a large number of starters back that has head coach Jimmy Clark believing the team can engineer a turnaround. “We played a lot of young guys and I think we will be better this year,” said Clark. “By the end of last year, we didn’t treat them like freshmen. They were playing every day. Some of our guys have talked about how they have taken their lumps and this is the year we break through.” Eight of the team’s top 11 hitters return, all of which have starting experience. On the mound, Clark will rely on the sophomore class for its three-man conference rotation. Around the infield, the Eagles return all four starters. Ozarks, which finished 8-32 last season, must improve its run production and hit for a higher average. The Eagles ranked last in the American Southwest Conference in batting (.264) and runs (189). “The college game has changed for everyone as a result of last year’s bat rule,” said Clark. “Guys with bad technique didn’t have a lot of success. We have to manufacture runs using the bunt, and the hit and run. You need to try to score one run an inning.” Leading the charge to improve its offensive production is All-Conference performer Mitchell Powers. Powers, a shortstop, led the team in nearly every offensive category, including hits (46), home runs (5), RBI (32), doubles (9), total bases (72), slugging percentage (.471) and at-bats (153). He finished the year hitting .301 while scoring 23 runs. Powers also excelled in the Atlantic / 2012 Baseball Media Guide /

Baseball Confederation Collegiate Summer League where has was named an All-Star. “Mitchell is an outstanding hitter and can hit the ball from gap to gap,” said Clark. “He can score runs and steal bases. He also has potential to hit home runs. And, he plays the game the right way.” Sophomores Tony Morales and Freddy Prince were among the top three hitters on the team. Morales, a smooth hitting left-hander, led the team in batting (.353), walks (21), on-base percentage (.451) and sacrifice hits (7). As the first baseman, Morales finished second on the team in hits (42), doubles (7) and total bases (49). Prince, who played behind the plate and in the outfield, ranked third on the team in batting (.313) and doubles (6), while finishing second in RBI (17). It is perhaps on the mound where Prince can have the biggest impact. Clark believes Prince could be special there. He posted a 1-2 record and struck out 21 in 34.0 innings of work. Centerfielder Chris Driedric returns for his senior season after hitting .287 in 29 starts. The standout defensive player did not commit an error last season. Michael Prusator, a senior, can play in the outfield, but will likely be the designated hitter. Prusator drove in 13 runs and hit two home runs a year ago. Junior second baseman Nick Brill hit .222 with three homers and 14 RBI in 28 starts and junior Ian Bryan hit .257 with 16 walks in 21 starts from his third base position. “Tony and Mitchell are as good as hitters that I’ve coached here,” said Clark. “Chris is very good, too. Michael has not been healthy, but has a lot of potential. Nick has been a part-time guy and I hope with every day reps he can take over that position. He has some pop. I think Ian has the ability to drive in runs.” Clark can choose from a bevy of players for the outfield. Driedric, Prince, senior Jonathan Cox, junior Drew Clark, sophomore Brandon Brewer and freshman Tyler Hydrick are battling for a spot in the outfield. John Singler is another freshman that Clark sees potential in

season preview as an outfielder. “They are all pushing each other and making each other better,” said Clark. “This is the area where we have the most depth. We have six guys that are competing for playing time. We would like to be able to steal some bases and inject some speed into the lineup with this group.” Cox and Hydrick are back after injuries. Prince could be a starter when he is not pitching. Brewer played in 19 games, and like Driedric, did not commit an error, while Clark is a versatile player. “Jonathan can run and steal bases and create havoc on the bases,” said Clark. “He has a different skill set than some of the others. I am hoping he can be a table-setter. He will be competing with Brandon in leftfield.” In 2010, Cox hit .265 with four doubles and saw significant action on the mound. “Brandon is a solid all-around player and can give you good at-bats and go deep into counts,” said Clark. “Tyler is coming off surgery and could play in right field. He can run and steal some bases and is aggressive. Freddy ended up hitting in the middle of the order last year so he’ll need to be getting at bats. Chris is as good a defensive player as there is in the conference. Drew is a wild card and could play any of those outfield positions. He is athletic and has potential.” Defensively, Clark believes his club is strong up the middle. “We are strong up the middle and that is a starting point,” he said. “Chris is an outstanding defensive centerfielder and Mitchell will be as good as any shortstop in the conference. Nick or whoever emerges at second will be solid. The catcher position is Chris Driedric one that is a bit of a question mark right now.” Calling signals behind the plate could be senior Chris Young or a trio of newcomers. Young started in 20 games last season and produced five doubles and a .222 batting average. “Chris is a guy that has played,” said Clark. “Sam Shook is good defensively. He will push Chris for all he is worth. Billy Easley and Peyton Johnigan will compete there, too. I think we will have some guys that eventually can be pretty good. We just need someone to emerge. We need more offensive production behind the plate, too.” At the corners, Morales and Bryan are back at first and third, respectively. Junior Zac Mitchell will be competing for time at third base. “I think Ian is in better shape and has an opportunity to be good,” said Clark. “Zac could also be productive there.” The pitching staff will be made up mostly of the heralded sophomore class. Prince, Bo Thomas, Tyler Erickson, Jeffrey Works and Adam Waynick will be expected to carry the

load. “You can look at our youthful pitching staff as a strength or a weakness,” said Clark. “But this sophomore pitching staff is as good as I’ve had here.” Erickson led the team in innings pitched (62.0), and tied for the team lead in wins (2), complete games (1) and games started (9). He finished second in strikeouts with 33. He owned a 6.68 ERA in 12 appearances. Thomas led the team in ERA (3.18) and appearances (18). He earned one save in 22.2 innings of work and finished with a 1-4 record and 17 strikeouts. Works posted a 1-1 record in 22.0 innings and appeared in 12 games. He recorded ten strikeouts and had a 4.91 ERA. Waynick threw 3.0 innings a year ago. “Tyler was very good last year,” said Clark. “He will be a conference starter and I Freddy Prince hope he can go deep into games. Freddy could be a game three starter. He has more upside than anyone I’ve ever coached. He has a very good breaking ball and when he throws it for strikes he is almost unhittable. He could be a two-pitch pitcher and be outstanding. Bo could go as a starter or reliever. He had a strong fall as a starter. Jeffery could be a starter or come out of the bullpen.” Newcomers Casey May, Nathan Cedor, Josh Stoffregen and Rodger Montano will see time on the mound as will lefty Jacob Nall, who is returning from an injury. “Casey, Nathan, Josh and Rodger will figure in somewhere,” said Clark. “We just have to figure out what their roles are.” Clark also has high hopes for senior righthander Robert Smith. The fiercely competitive Smith has the potential to be the closer. “He is potentially a closer because he has the mental makeup,” said Clark. “He gives people fits because he is a strike thrower. He keeps the ball down and will figure in the bullpen.” Clark believes the pitching staff will need to define itself as the season goes on. “We need to have some guys emerge and assume some roles on the mound,” he said. “There are good arms in the freshmen class. We just need to figure where to utilize their strengths.” As Clark sizes up his club, the veteran coach is aiming for improvement as the season progresses. “I think we can be a team that shows improvement over the course of the year,” said Clark. “I think we may have some ups and downs while we are trying to figure out roles for our pitchers. There is potential with this club and I think we will be in the hunt for a playoff spot. Ultimately, our pitching will decide a lot of that.”

season review Five Honored For Academics Five baseball players were named to the 2011 spring American Southwest Conference All-Academic Team. To be eligible for ASC All-Academic honors, studentathletes must have lettered in the 2011 season, be in at least their second academic year at their institution, and carry a career grade-point average of 3.00 or better. Included on the team were Ian Bryan, a sophomore management/ business administration major from North Little Rock, Ark.; Chris Driedric, a junior biology major from Little Rock, Ark.; Arturo Perez, a senior management/ marketing major from Caracas, Venezuela; Mitchell Powers, a sophomore physical education major from North Little Rock, Ark.; and Michael Prusator, a junior chemistry major from Ochelata, Okla. Four players made the team in 2010, including Driedric and Prusator. The Eagles have had 45 players on the team under the tenure of head coach Jimmy Clark. Ozarks has also had seven Academic All-Americans since 2002. The baseball program had the first studentathlete from Ozarks to earn national First Team Academic All-America status when Robby Finnell did it in 2008.

Mitchell Powers Among Top ASC Players Sophomore shortstop Mitchell Powers was named to the American Southwest Conference All-East Division Second Team following a standout season in 2011. Powers, a 6-foot, 195-pound native of North Little Rock, Ark., led the team in nearly every offensive category, including hits (46), home runs (5), RBI (32), doubles (9), total bases (72), slugging percentage (.471) and at-bats (153). A starter in all 40 games, he finished the year hitting .301, while scoring 23 runs and recording one triple. He also set the new single season school record with 130 assists. He produced a team-best six three-hit games and 15 multiple-hit games. Additionally, he led the team with 11 multiple-RBI games. He posted back-to-back-to-back three-hit games in February and hit safely in 25 contests. Against Texas-Dallas March 11, he went 3-for-5 with four runs and two RBI. Powers earned Honorable Mention All-Conference his rookie season after hitting .359 with 24 RBI and 12 doubles. Powers produced an All-Star season in the Atlantic Baseball Confederation Collegiate League over the summer.

Mitchell Powers Breaks School Record Sophomore shortstop Mitchell Powers broke the school record for most assists in a season. Powers recorded 130 last season, breaking Cory Briggs previous record of 127. Briggs, an All-American shortstop had that number in both 2007 and 2008. Powers posted a .928 fielding percentage last season in 40 starts. He owns a career .962 fielding percentage and has 205 careers assists, ranking him fifth all-time in program history. Briggs owns the school record with 382. Ozarks Betters In-State Rivals Ozarks and Hendrix College have battled over the years as the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s only two NCAA III colleges. Ozarks took three of four last season behind solid pitching from freshmen Sam Brownwood, Tyler Erickson, Freddy Prince, Jeffrey Works and Bo Thomas. All four games were close, with Ozarks delivering a 4-3 win in the season-opener. Hendrix won game two, 18-12, on April 5 in Conway. The Eagles registered a double-header sweep in Conway April 12, with a 3-1 and 4-3 win, respectively. Ozarks owns the all-time series record over Hendrix since 1998 with a 21-10 win-to-loss record.

Freshmen Standouts Nine freshmen played during the 2011 season, many of which saw significant action. Six of those started in at least one game, while the others saw plenty of time during their rookie campaigns. Nearly all of them return for the 2012 season and are expected to again make major contributions to the team. First baseman Tony Morales started in 36 games and led the team in batting (.353), walks (21), on-base percentage (.451), sacrifice hits (7) and putouts (315). He finished second on the team in hits (42) and doubles (7), and third in slugging percentage (.412) and atbats (119). Pitcher/outfielder/catcher Freddy Prince started 25 games as a position player and made 12 appearances on the mound. He ranked third on the team in batting (.313), RBI (17) and doubles (6). He finished fourth on the team in hits (30) and slugging percentage (.396). On the mound, he posted a 1-2 record in 34.0 innings of work and struck out 21 while owning a 5.03 ERA. Pitcher Tyler Erickson led the team in innings pitched (62.0), and tied for the team lead in wins (2), complete games (1) and games started (9). He finished second in strikeouts with 33 and owned a 6.68 ERA in 12 appearances. Pitcher Bo Thomas led the team in ERA (3.18) and appearances (18). He earned 1 save in 22.2 innings of work and finished with a 1-4 record and 17 strikeouts. Pitcher Jeffrey Works posted a 1-1 record in 22.0 innings of work and appeared in 12 games. year-by-year results Amy Carlton ASC Commissioner Amy Carlton is the Commissioner of the American Southwest Conference with oversight of the league’s long-term and daily administration and operations, including member and NCAA relations, compliance, scheduling and championships. Carlton was appointed Interim Commissioner July 1, 2006 after serving as ASC Assistant Commissioner/ Director of Media Relations. Carlton joined the ASC office in January 2002 after 13-1/2 years in sports information at NCAA Division I institutions, including 10 years as Assistant Director of Athletic Media Relations at the University of Michigan (1990-2000). She was Assistant Sports Information Director at Northern Illinois University (1989-90) and a graduate intern at both Western Illinois University (1987-88) and Michigan (1988-89). Carlton began her career at Division III institutions as an assistant in the news bureau at Franklin College (1981-82) and Director of News and Sports Information at Manchester College (1982-87). Carlton is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), National Association of Division III Athletic Administrators (NADIIIAA), National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA), and the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). A native of Greencastle, Ind., Carlton is a 1981 graduate of Franklin College (Ind.), where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism.

Greg Weghorst ASC Media Relations Assistant Commissioner Greg Weghorst was named Director of Media Relations of the American Southwest Conference in February 2007 after serving in an interim role since August 2006. He was also promoted to the Assistant Commissioner position in 2010. Weghorst is the fifth media relations director of the ASC. He provides an oversight of the conference’s media relations operation, including compilation of league statistics and standings and NCAA reports, production of the ASC weekly sport reports, maintaining the ASC web site and assisting with conference issues and tournament administration. A sports writer with the Temple Daily Telegram prior to coming to the ASC, Weghorst provided coverage of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, Central Texas Blackhawks/Marshals of the North American Hockey League and Templearea high schools. He was part of the coverage team for the 2005 EV1.net Houston Bowl and the 2004 Major League Baseball All-Star Game. A native of Waco, Texas, he is a 2003 graduate of Mary Hardin-Baylor with a Bachelor of Arts degree in mass communications/ journalism.

American Southwest Conference The American Southwest Conference, one of the largest intercollegiate athletic conferences in NCAA Division III, is in its second decade of providing quality athletic experiences for its student-athletes, coaches and administrators. Founded in May 1996 to provide a structure for intercollegiate athletics among member institutions, the American Southwest Conference includes former members of the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association (TIAA) and other institutions from outside the Texas borders. From the eight founding institutions to today’s present group of 16 college and universities, the ASC encompasses institutions sharing similar educational and athletic philosophies. Spreading across the 422,060 square miles of the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas, the ASC offers student-athletes competition in 16 sports with opportunity for advancement to conference and NCAA Division III championships. The roster of American Southwest Conference members includes Centenary College, Concordia University Texas, East Texas Baptist University, Hardin-Simmons University, Howard Payne University, LeTourneau University, Louisiana College, University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, McMurry University, Mississippi College, University of the Ozarks, Schreiner University, Sul Ross State University, University of Texas at Dallas, University of Texas at Tyler, and Texas Lutheran University. ASC championships are conducted in 16 sports (8 men, 8 women). Men’s championships are offered in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis and track and field. Women’s championships are offered in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field and volleyball. The American Southwest Conference is headquartered in Richardson, Texas.
