Head Coach Brian Hull Head Coach Brian Hull begins his sixth year as the Head Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Coach. Hull, a native of Eureka Springs, Ark., was the assistant men’s and women’s cross country coach at Ozarks from 2001-2003. Hull has quickly transformed the men’s and women’s cross country teams into competitive regional programs. In 2012, he had one women’s runner win the individual title at the Arkansas D-III Championships and another named to the Capital One Academic All-District Team. On the men’s side, the team posted three top-5 finishes in five of their races. In 2011 and 2010, the men’s team finished second at the American Southwest Conference championships, its highest finish since 1996. In 2011, four of his runners earned All-Conference honors and another was named Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year. That same season, two of his men’s runners earned ASC Runner of the Week honors. Hull’s program continues to receive regional and national recognition. Two runners made the USTFCCCA All-Region Team in 2011. Jeremy Provence earned two separate national awards - Capital One Academic All-America honors and USTFCCCA All-Academic honors - following the 2011 season. In addition, Provence was named the ASC Scholar Athlete of the Year for cross country. And, David James was voted the Ozarks’ Male Athlete of the Year for the 2011-2012 school year. As a team and for the first time in program history, the Eagles broke into the top-10 at the NCAA III South/Southeast Regional. The men also posted wins at the Arkansas D-III Championships and the Ozarks Invitational during the year. The women’s program had an outstanding 2011 season, finishing seventh overall at the ASC Championships, its highest finish since 2006. Ashley Teague was named ASC Runner of the Week twice and earned a spot on the Capital One Academic All-America Team for the second straight year. The women’s program posted a win at the Arkansas D-III Championships and finished second at the Ozarks Invitational. A combined runners 13 made the ASC All-Academic Team in 2011. Hull’s men’s

2

and women’s team received another first when it was awarded the team academic award from the USTFCCCA, an honor given to teams with at least a 3.10 grade point average. In 2010, Hull coached three All-Conference runners, the ASC Freshman of the Year and the ASC Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year. Six of his men’s runners received conference All-Academic honors. Two of his runners were named to the USTFCCCA All-Region Team and one of his runners was voted the school’s Male Athlete of the Year. On the women’s side, Hull’s program produced a member of the Capital One Academic All-America Team, the only ASC school to do so, and a pair of conference All-Academic honorees during the 2010 campaign. In 2009, he had four runners compete at the NCAA III regionals in North Carolina, with one of his runners earning USTFCCCA All-Region Team honors there. Two of his men’s runners were named to the ASC All-Conference Team and he had a combined six runners earn ASC All-Academic Team status following the 2009 season. Hull coached the men’s ASC Freshman of the Year in 2008. Hull’s success at Ozarks began as a student - he was a four-year cross country letterman at Ozarks and was named All-Conference in 1997. He was ASC Runner of the Week twice during his career. He graduated from Ozarks in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in marketing. He earned his master’s degree in college student personnel from Arkansas Tech University in 2007.

2013 Outlook The U of O men’s and women’s cross country teams will rely on a large group of experienced runners for the 2013 season. The men’s team will be led by three-time AllConference performer Matt Friant. Friant, a senior from Conway, was the American Southwest Conference Freshman of the Year in 2010 and owns the ninth-fastest 8K time in program history with a 26:40. Friant will be joined by fellow seniors Calvin Jones, Max Hilgendorf and Trent Ueunten. Ozark native Robert Elder returns for his junior season. Freshman Ryan Holt is expected to have an immediate impact on the team. “I am impressed with the role my upperclassmen have taken,” said head coach Brian Hull. “They have taken the initiative in working with the new runners. Matt has had a lot of competition from his teammates in the past and is a proven All-Conference runner. He is a good example to the younger runners and has shown them what it takes to be successful. Ryan will be solid for us. He will have an impact on the team, too.” Senior Kara Willbanks leads the women’s team after posting one individual title last season. Hull will rely on a number of other experienced runners - including Sara Sisemore, Cindy Henriquez and Shelby Baker - to continue to build the program. “We have a solid group of girls,” said Hull. “We could have a potential pack running mentality. I think Kara has come back in good shape and she has taken on a leadership role. She has developed into a good runner. We also have newcomers that have the potential to develop into solid collegiate runners.” U of O will host two races this season, including the Ozarks Invitational September 28. The Arkansas D-III Championships will be hosted by U of O October 23. The Eagles and Lady Eagles open the 2013 season at the Arkansas Tech Invitational September 14.

American Southwest Conference The American Southwest Conference, one of the largest intercollegiate athletic conferences in NCAA Division III, is in its second decade of providing quality athletic experiences for its student-athletes, coaches and administrators. Founded in May 1996 to provide a structure for intercollegiate athletics among member institutions, the American Southwest Conference includes former members of the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association (TIAA) and other institutions from outside the Texas borders. From the eight founding institutions to today’s present group of 12 colleges and universities, the ASC encompasses institutions sharing similar educational and athletic philosophies. The roster of American Southwest Conference members includes Concordia University Texas, East Texas Baptist University, Hardin-Simmons University, Howard Payne University, LeTourneau University, Louisiana College, University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, Mississippi College, University of the Ozarks, Sul Ross State University, University of Texas at Dallas and University of Texas at Tyler. ASC championships are conducted in 16 sports (8 men, 8 women). Men’s championships are offered in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis and track and field. Women’s championships are offered in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field and volleyball. The American Southwest Conference is headquartered in Richardson, Texas.

University of the Ozarks UNIVERSITY OF THE OZARKS has approached education with an unyielding search for truth. That search led our founders to establish the first co-educational college west of the Mississippi. It set the stage for the first Arkansas woman to receive a college degree. And because truth often defies convention, ours was the first historically white college in the state to admit AfricanAmericans. Every day, our history inspires Ozarks students to discover their own individual truths.
