Men’s & Women’s Cross Country Head Coach

Jeremy Provence Head Coach Jeremy Provence returns to his alma mater for the 2014 season to serve as the head men’s and women’s coach after a record-setting career. Provence is the only runner in men’s program history to earn Capital One Academic All-District honors and one of only two runners to be a member of the US Track & Field & Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team. Provence, a native of Bidville, Ark., ran four years at Ozarks, and owns the second-fastest 8K time in school history with a time of 25:54. Provence participated in four NCAA III Regional races during his career at Ozarks. He was named to the USTFCCCA All-Region Team and All-Conference Team in 2011 and was a member of the American Southwest Conference All-Academic Team three times. Following his standout running career, Provence served as a volunteer assistant for the men’s and women’s cross country program at NCAA II University of West Florida in 2012 and then was a graduate assistant during the 2013 season at UWF. Provence holds a USA Track and Field Level One certification. Provence received his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Ozarks in 2012. He received his master’s degree in health, leisure, and exercise science with an emphasis in exercise science from UWF in 2014. In addition to coaching, Provence is an adjunct instructor for the health science program at Ozarks. jprovence@ozarks.edu 479-979-1411

Men’s & Women’s Cross Country 2014 Outlook

Tradition-Rich Program Under New Coach Under the leadership of new head men’s and women’s cross country coach Jeremy Provence, each program is expected to continue its strong running tradition. For the 2014 season, Provence will inherit a young, but hungry group on both the men’s and women’s side. The 2014 men’s team will need to replace four lettermen, while the women will need to replace three. Provence’s challenge to compete with a young group will be determined by how fast the new runners adjust to the collegiate level. On the women’s side, Provence can rely on senior Emily Gorham to be the team leader. Gorham is expected to make even greater strides in year two in the program. Fellow senior Lynette Pina is among the most experienced runners on the team. Freshman Stephanie Alderson has the ability to make an immediate impact for the Lady Eagles. Alderson could make up for the loss of graduated standout runner Kara Willbanks, who left with a pair of top-20 records. Other key runners for the Lady Eagles in 2014 include Megan and Amy Wallace and freshman Madison Sherrer. While being the underdogs, Provence can expect a hungry and willing women’s team for the 2014 season. On the men’s side, recent success has been the norm, but Provence will need to replace recordsetting Ryan Holt from last year’s team. Provence does have seniors Robert Elder, Bryant Ford and Todd Turner to build around. Elder has been a steady and gritty runner during his collegiate career, but will need to raise his running level even higher for the upcoming season. Ford has been in a number of races in the past and will help form a solid senior class. In the mix will also be sophomores Samuel Binns and Trevor Lister, who each have shown flashes of potential. Newcomer Cade Edwards is Provence’s prize incoming freshman. Edwards has the ability to give the Eagles an extra push towards conference prominence. The men’s program has been among the top programs in the American Southwest Conference the past several seasons, and if this group can meld together, the Eagles are likely to finish high at the ASC Championships.

Discover University of the Ozarks student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their interests and passions beyond the classroom and field of play...to discover themselves. Develop University of the Ozarks provides an environment that encourages student-athletes to develop into well-rounded adults. Small class sizes, the ability to participate in more than one sport, and an emphasis on participating activities outside of the classroom are all hallmarks of the NCAA Division III experience.

University of the Ozarks is a member of the NCAA Division III and the American Southwest Conference. We are a small, private, nationally acclaimed and accredited university with a “whole-student” focus. We consider athletics a huge part of developing potential for our student-athletes. Men’s & Women’s Cross Country American Southwest Conference The American Southwest Conference, one of the largest intercollegiate athletic conferences in NCAA Division III, is in its second decade of providing quality athletic experiences for its student-athletes, coaches and administrators. From the eight founding institutions to today’s present group of 12 college and universities, the ASC encompasses institutions sharing similar educational and athletic philosophies. The roster of American Southwest Conference members includes Concordia University Texas, East Texas Baptist University, Hardin-Simmons University, Howard Payne University, LeTourneau University, Louisiana College, University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, McMurry University, University of the Ozarks, Sul Ross State University, University of Texas at Dallas and University of Texas at Tyler. ASC championships are conducted in 16 sports (8 men, 8 women). Men’s championships are offered in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis and track and field.
