Hull Raises Expectations Of Cross Country Teams Men’s and women’s head coach Brian Hull has high expectations for his cross country teams this season. Hull expressed his excitement for the veteran status of several runners and plans to use that to the team’s advantage in the upcoming season. He expects his upperclassmen to take on a leadership role and work with the four men and two women that joined the program to help Ozarks improve and continue development within the program. The experience of the older runners combined with the excitement of the younger runners is expected to create promising results. While the older runners continue to work hard and improve, Hull states “the incoming class can have an opportunity to have a pretty solid impact right away for the men and women.” On the men’s side, junior David James earned First Team All-Conference and junior Tristan Cooper earned Second Team All-Conference last season. James also picked up a Runner of the Week title last season. Cooper had the team’s top 8K time last season, running a 28:02 at the Rhodes College Invitational. “We hope to continue to have that conference recognition with a runner of the week title or through a First or Second Team All-Conference runner,” said Hull. Hull reveals that the women’s team has some high impact runners that will help the program receive more recognition. The last few years both teams have went to the NCAA III South/Southeast Regional and received some high recognition. Two years ago the Eagles sent three men and last year they sent the same three men along with one woman to the meet. Junior Tadera Garland, who posted the team’s top 5K time with a 23:57, was the first female runner in program history since U of O joined the ASC to represent the women’s team. James, Cooper, and Jeremy Provence represented Ozarks in the regional meet the previous two years. The men showed immense improvement on the national stage last year from their first experience. James placed in the top 35 runners at the meet, qualifying him for the All-Region Team.
A solid incoming class hopes to move Ozarks up the conference ladder for each team and an incredible amount of excitement coming from the men and women will fuel the efforts of the teams in training and meets. 2010 Schedule Friday, September 3 Arkansas Tech Twilight Run @ Russellville, AR 6:30 p.m. Saturday, September 11 University of Texas-Tyler Invitational @ Tyler, TX 7:30 a.m. Saturday, September 25 Memphis Twilight @ Memphis, TN 8:30 p.m. Saturday, October 2 Rhodes College Invitational @ Memphis, TN 9:30 a.m. Saturday, October 30 ASC Championships @ Tyler, TX TBA Saturday, November 13 NCAA Division III South/Southeast Regional @ Memphis, TN TBA

American Southwest Conference Amy Carlton ASC Commissioner
American Southwest Conference The American Southwest Conference, one of the largest intercollegiate athletic conferences in NCAA Division III, will celebrate its 15th championship season of competition with the 2010-2011 academic year. Founded in May 1996 to provide a structure for intercollegiate athletics among the member institutions, the American Southwest Conference includes former members of the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association (TIAA) and other institutions outside the Texas border. From the eight founding institutions to today’s present group of 15 college and universities, the ASC encompasses institutions sharing similar educational and athletic philosophies. Spreading across four states — Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi — the ASC offers student-athletes competition in 16 sports with opportunity for advancement in both conference and NCAA Division III championships. The roster of American Southwest Conference members in 2009-2010 includes Concordia University Texas, East Texas Baptist University, Hardin-Simmons University, Howard Payne University, LeTourneau University, Louisiana College, University of Mary HardinBaylor, McMurry University, Mississippi College, University of the Ozarks, Schreiner University, Sul Ross State University, University of Texas at Dallas, University of Texas at Tyler, and Texas Lutheran University. ASC championships are conducted in 16 sports (8 men, 8 women). Men’s championships are offered in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis and track and field. Women’s championships are offered in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field and volleyball. The American Southwest Conference is headquartered in Richardson, Texas.
Amy Carlton is the Commissioner of the American Southwest Conference with oversight of the league’s long-term and daily administration and operations, including member and NCAA relations, compliance, scheduling and championships. Carlton was appointed Interim Commissioner July 1, 2006 after serving as ASC Assistant Commissioner/ Director of Media Relations. Carlton joined the ASC office in January 2002 after 13-1/2 years in sports information at NCAA Division I institutions, including 10 years as Assistant Director of Athletic Media Relations at the University of Michigan (1990-2000). She was Assistant Sports Information Director at Northern Illinois University (1989-90) and a graduate intern at both Western Illinois University (1987-88) and Michigan (1988-89). Carlton began her career at Division III institutions as an assistant in the news bureau at Franklin College (1981-82) and Director of News and Sports Information at Manchester College (1982-87). Carlton is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), National Association of Division III Athletic Administrators (NADIIIAA), National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA), and the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
