Men’s Basketball Coaching Staff David Ferrell Head Coach David Ferrell begins his second season as the head coach at U of O. In year one, Ferrell improved the team’s conference win total by two from the previous season, as well as posting more overall wins. Ferrell’s uptempo style proved to among the most potent in the American Southwest Conference as it averaged 78 points per game. With his fast-paced philosophy and a strong recruiting class, the program demonstrated quick success, winning three of its first five games. The program also had a signature win over Concordia University Texas late in the season to stay in playoff contention. A number of players ranked among the top offensive players in the conference. Guard Josh Ferrell was named ASC Freshman of the Year and received a spot on the All-Freshman Team. Guard Ricky Allen led the conference in assists and earned national accolades when he made the D3Hoops.com Team of the Week. With a solid foundation in place, Ferrell’s program aims for even more success in year two with three starters returning. Prior to Ozarks, Ferrell spent 21 years as the head boy’s basketball coach at West Fork High School where he posted a 458-176 (.733) record and made eight trips to the state tournament. He compiled a 510-202 (.716) career record in 24 years as a head coach at Shiloh Christian, Lincoln, Gravette and West Fork. Ferrell won six conference championships and two regional championships at WFHS. He led the 2010-2011 Tigers to its best season in school history with a 34-3 record and an appearance in the state championship game. Over his final three seasons, Ferrell owned the school’s best three-year run with an 87-18 mark. Ferrell was voted the head coach of the Arkansas High Coaches Association (AHSCA) AllStar Game in 1994 and 2011. Ferrell, who has worked alongside Gus Malzahn, Mike Anderson and Jimmy Dykes during his coaching career, served as the Vice-President of the Arkansas High School Basketball Coaches Association during his High School tenure. During his career at WFHS, his teams won 27 different tournaments over 21 years. Men’s Basketball 2014-2015 Outlook MORE IMPROVEMENT EXPECTED IN YEAR TWO UNDER FERRELL U of O head men’s basketball coach David Ferrell took positive steps in year one, winning more games overall and in conference play than the previous season, and now looks for even more improvement in year two. The Eagles improved their conference win total by two from 2013-2014. Additionally, the Eagles won more overall games, finishing 8-17. The veteran coach, however, understands much more still has to be done in order for the Eagles to be a playoff contender. “Last year we got to the point where we were competitive every night,” said Ferrell. “We were close late in some conference games and could have won a few more. Last year, everybody probably overlooked us a little bit. It is a tough league. The league is really talented and really well coached. There is not a lot of separation among the teams.” Even though there is an improved mindset, the Eagles will still need to overcome a lack of experience. “We are really young,” said Ferrell. “We only have a few upperclassmen. There will be four or five freshmen that will have to play for us. It is a talented freshmen class. Overall, we are probably a little deeper than we were last year. Our whole team attitude is great. We have guys that will come to work hard every day.” Returning starters include senior forward Ted Beard IV, sophomore guard Josh Ferrell and senior forward Kelby Robinson. Beard IV was second on the team in scoring (12.8), while hitting 33 percent of his three-point attempts. Beard IV plays much bigger than his 6-foot3 frame. He finished seventh in the conference in rebounding (7.8) and posted eight double-doubles. “Ted is just a good all-around player,” said Ferrell. “He plays well wherever we put him. He is a very versatile player.” Josh Ferrell was named the American Southwest Conference Freshman of the Year and earned a spot on the All-Freshman Team after averaging 11.8 points per game. He hit 48-of-151 (31%) of his threepoint shots. “Josh can shoot it from deep,” he said. “He was unknown last year, but that won’t be the case this season. It will be harder for him to get an open look. He has his work cut out for him.” The 6-foot-5 Robinson provides Ozarks with a presence inside. Robinson averaged 8.8 points and 5.0 rebounds per game.
Ted Beard IV “Kelby is an undersized post player, but is real crafty around the basket,” said Ferrell. “He can produce. He has to have a big year for us.” Ferrell’s troops will again play an up-tempo brand of basketball. Ozarks launched 524 three-point shots and averaged 78 points per game, fourth-highest in the league. The Eagles will push the ball in hopes of offsetting the team’s lack of size. “We want to play fast, but still be organized and take a good shot,” he said. “We want to press a lot and trap a lot. We don’t have a lot of size. I’m not sure we have a true post player. Those guys are mainly power forward type players. Hopefully, we can offset our lack of size with an extra shooter in the game. That may give us a mismatch.” Providing depth inside the paint will be junior Adam Geller and sophomore Ricky Scott. Roaming the perimeter will be a number of players including sophomores Josh Berard and Cade Niswonger, as well as freshmen Ben Grice and Jace Richardson. “Adam and Ricky are battling to backup Kelby,” said Ferrell. “Josh is a player that we can put anywhere. He will play a major role this season. At the point guard position, we have competition among Cade, Ben and Jace.”
