Coaching Staff John Cossaboon Head Coach Veteran coach John Cossaboon begins his fifth season at Ozarks. In his first season at Ozarks, Cossaboon led the Eagles to the conference playoffs, their tenth straight time to qualify for post-season play, where they advanced all the way to the semi-finals. Cossaboon had six players named to the All-Conference Team, including the ASC’s Offensive Freshman of the Year, and another who earned NSCAA All-Region honors that season. In 2010, the veteran coach had two players earn ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America honors and four players were voted to All-Conference Team. Additionally, six of his players made the ASC All-Academic Team in 2010. The 2011 season saw more honors for the program as ten players earned ASC All-Academic honors, the most since 2007, while five earned All-Conference status. Three players have earned district honors from the Capital One Academic All-America program. In 2012, his program was given the NSCAA team academic award. Cossaboon, a native of Rochester, New York, has head women’s coaching stints at NCAA I Southern Methodist University and University of San Diego. Cossaboon also spent two years as the assistant women’s coach at Gonzaga University. Cossaboon joined Gonzaga from Southern Methodist University where he coached four seasons and earned Conference USA Coach of the Year twice. SMU won conference titles in each of those seasons, including 2006 when SMU went 17-5-1 overall and 8-1-0 in Conference USA for its seventh straight regular-season title. The Mustangs, tied for 24th in the final SoccerTimes.com poll, and received an at-large bid into the College Cup, advancing to the second round in their sixth straight College Cup appearance that year. In his first season at the helm, SMU recorded a 17-3-2 mark, finished 22nd in the nation and won the Western Athletic Conference. Prior to SMU, Cossaboon spent six years at University of San Diego, guiding the Toreros to four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances (1999-2002) while compiling an overall record of 7144-9. His West Coast Conference mark was 25-15-2. Additionally, Cossaboon served as the women’s
2
head coach at UC Santa Barbara from 1995-1996. With a United States Soccer Federation “A” License, he has been a National Staff Coach for the National Soccer Coaches Association of America since 1983. From 1983 to 1985, he was a National Staff Coach for the USSF. A 1977 graduate of State University of New York-Cortland, Cossaboon earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education with an emphasis in sports psychology and exercise physiology. Cossaboon earned his master’s degree in physical education in 1978 from the University of North Carolina. Matt Torok Assistant Coach Matt Torok is in his fifth season as the assistant men’s coach. Torok, a native of Reading, Pa., was the assistant coach at Southwestern University for three seasons, helping the Pirates to their three most successful finishes in school history. In 2008, the Pirates went 12-6-2 overall and 7-3-0 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, marking the third straight year the team finished among the top two teams. Prior to Southwestern, Torok served as the assistant men’s and women’s soccer coach from 2003-2005 at Defiance College and was then promoted to interim head men’s coach. He spent one year as the assistant men’s coach at Albright College. Torok played at Syracuse University four seasons and then played two seasons professionally with the Reading Rage. He holds a NSCAA Advanced National Diploma, a NSCAA Goalkeeping Level 2 Diploma, as well as a USSF National “D” License. Torok received his bachelor’s degree in sociology and psychology from Syracuse University in 2001. He has a master’s degree in education from Defiance College. He and his wife, Carol, were married in 2008 and have one son, Jaxen.
2013 Outlook John Cossaboon’s men’s soccer team enters the 2013 campaign with high hopes after a disappointing year in 2012. Cossaboon’s optimistic attitude for the upcoming season stems from returning nearly every starter, and the fact that a number of talented new players joined the program. Cossaboon, who enters his fifth season at Ozarks, believes the talent level has increased dramatically since last season. “The thing that sticks out most to me is we have some players,” said Cossaboon. “We have six or seven players that were not on the field last season who will contribute immediately. I think this is a year we can surprise some teams. If we can keep it together and keep injuries minimized, the sky is the limit.” The Eagles finished 4-10-1 overall in 2012, but Cossaboon’s team appears ready to make drastic improvements from last season. Marcus Aldaba, Josh Duncan, Adrian Nunez, Patrick Shoulders, Cole DeVoss and Eloy Salgado form a talented senior class for the Eagles. Mixed with the senior class will be other experienced players, including defensive standouts Tony Ramos, Shaun Keane, Travis Leach and Junior Sandoval. “It is a veteran team in the sense there is a big group of older players, but it is not a veteran team in terms of them playing together,” said Cossaboon. Salgado, a forward, is back from an injury. In 2011, he scored nine goals and tallied six assists. Both Aldaba and Duncan scored two goals and recorded four assists apiece. Keane and Leach scored three and two goals, respectively. “Eloy has a gift in terms of talent,” said Cossaboon. “Having him out there makes us a much better team. Marcus is a gifted player, too. He’s had moments of playing at a high level and he has had periods where he has not been consistent. Adrian is the hardest working guy in practice and leads by example. He is a captain along with Josh. Josh works hard and is very intelligent with the way he makes the play move. My hope is to have those two be major contributors in what we are doing both ways. Cole is a player that will help us, too.” Newcomers Thomas Mills and Gage Merritt are expected to provide the team with an even more offensive flare. Additionally, the speedy Matt Weaver returns for his sophomore season. With a diverse range of scoring options, Cossaboon hopes to see his team put the ball in the back of the net in a variety of ways.
“We need to get numbers in the box and score,” he said. “I’ve told the team we should score from width, score from taking opponents on in the middle and score off our re-starts. I want us to be attackminded. We have the players to play that way.” Keane, an All-Conference defender, returns to roam the back for the Eagles, and transfer Austin Benner is set to take over in goal. Keane scored three goals and can play in a number of spots on the pitch. The talented Leach was impressive as a freshman and even bigger things are expected this season. Ramos was a standout defender a year ago and Sandoval has solid skills to make an impact. Benner will provide the Eagles with length in goal with his 6-foot-4 frame. Fellow sophomore Jarret Sadler has proven to be valuable in goal, too. “Shaun is a go-to guy in the back,” said Cossaboon. “The back four could be young because Shaun may be moved because of his versatility. Tony was one of our top defenders and is an anchor in the backline and Junior is a steady defender. Austin has been phenomenal and Jarret has made tremendous improvement since last year.” Meshing the unit together and figuring out roles are the team’s biggest question marks going into the season, according to Cossaboon. “We need to get accustomed to playing with each other,” he said. “We have some good individuals, but we need them to blend together and function as a unit. The general concept is to attack, defend hard in the attacking third if we lose a ball, and then have the players do their job when we are in transition.”

American Southwest Conference The American Southwest Conference, one of the largest intercollegiate athletic conferences in NCAA Division III, is in its second decade of providing quality athletic experiences for its student-athletes, coaches and administrators. Founded in May 1996 to provide a structure for intercollegiate athletics among member institutions, the American Southwest Conference includes former members of the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association (TIAA) and other institutions from outside the Texas borders. From the eight founding institutions to today’s present group of 12 college and universities, the ASC encompasses institutions sharing similar educational and athletic philosophies. The roster of American Southwest Conference members includes Concordia University Texas, East Texas Baptist University, Hardin-Simmons University, Howard Payne University, LeTourneau University, Louisiana College, University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, Mississippi College, University of the Ozarks, Sul Ross State University, University of Texas at Dallas and University of Texas at Tyler. ASC championships are conducted in 16 sports (8 men, 8 women). Men’s championships are offered in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis and track and field. Women’s championships are offered in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field and volleyball. The American Southwest Conference is headquartered in Richardson, Texas.

University of the Ozarks UNIVERSITY OF THE OZARKS has approached education with an unyielding search for truth. That search led our founders to establish the first co-educational college west of the Mississippi. It set the stage for the first Arkansas woman to receive a college degree. And because truth often defies convention, ours was the first historically white college in the state to admit AfricanAmericans. Every day, our history inspires Ozarks students to discover their own individual truths.
