Men’s Soccer Coaching Staff Matt Torok Head Coach Matt Torok was promoted to Head Coach in 2014 following a five-year stint as the assistant coach. Torok, a native of Reading, Pa., quickly went to work as the head coach and hauled in a talented freshmen class for the 2014 season. Torok brought in 13 new players that will be added to an already seasoned group of players to build his foundation. As an assistant, Torok helped the Eagles to a pair of postseason appearances and worked with all aspects of the program, including serving as the recruiting coordinator, goalkeeper coach and player development. Under his guidance, Ozarks’ goalkeepers were among the most productive in the American Southwest Conference as three of his goalkeepers earned All-Conference honors. Ozarks has also boasted one of the top offenses in the conference with Torok as the assistant. Since his arrival, 21 players have been All-Conference and another 39 have made the ASC All-Academic Team. The Eagles have earned the NSCAA Team Academic Award twice in five years. Prior to Ozarks, he was an assistant coach at Southwestern University for four seasons where he helped the Pirates to their three most successful finishes in school history. The Pirates went a combined 24-11-5 in conference matches during that span. Torok served as the assistant men’s and women’s soccer coach from 2003-2004 at Defiance College. He was later promoted to interim head men’s coach. He helped the team to a school record 14 wins during the 2003 season. He also recruited and coached a pair of conference Freshmen of the Year as well as the conference Goalkeeper of the Year. Previous to Defiance, he spent one year as the assistant men’s coach at Albright College. At Southwestern, Defiance and Albright, Torok coached numerous NSCAA All-Region and All-Conference players. Torok has served as an Arkansas ODP Head Coach working at academy camps and training sessions for boys and girls and taken multiple ODP teams to the Region 3 camp in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Torok played at Syracuse University four seasons and then played two seasons professionally with the Reading Rage. He holds a NSCAA Advanced National Diploma and a NSCAA Goalkeeping Level 2 Diploma. Torok received his bachelor’s degree in sociology and psychology from Syracuse University in 2001. He has a master’s degree in education with a concentration in sports science from Defiance College. He and his wife, Carol, who is the Associate Head Volleyball Coach at the University of Arkansas, were married in December 2008. The couple welcomed their first child, Jaxen, in January 2013.

Wilson Jones Assistant Coach Former Ozarks’ soccer player Wilson Jones enters his first season as the assistant men’s coach. Jones, a native of Sulphur Springs, Texas, comes from NCAA Division II Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas, where he served as an assistant coach and goalkeeper coach in 2013. MSU posted a 12-4-2 record and finished No. 13 in the final National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll last season. MSU also qualified for the NCAA II Tournament making it all the way to the Sweet 16. Jones mentored two NSCAA All-American players while at MSU, including the Mustangs’ record-setting goalkeeper. Prior to MSU, Jones served as the assistant men’s and women’s coach and recruiting coordinator at NCAA Division II Ouachita Baptist University. In his one season (2012) at OBU, Jones oversaw training sessions, off-season weight training and conditioning and player development. With Jones on the bench, the women’s program advanced to the championship match of the conference tournament. From 2010-2011, Jones was the assistant men’s coach and recruiting coordinator at Howard Payne University. Jones helped HPU to the American Southwest Conference playoffs in 2010 and coached four NSCAA All-Region players in two seasons. Jones’ overall record as a men’s and women’s assistant coach is 51-36-4. Jones owns a NSCAA Advanced National Diploma. Jones played at Ozarks from 2005-2008, helping the program to a 58-18-10 record and four playoff appearances. He twice received ASC All-Academic honors. He received his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Ozarks in 2009. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in exercise physiology from MSU. He and his wife, Rachel, were married in 2012.

Men’s Soccer 2014 Outlook TOROK FOCUSES ON THE BUILDING PROCESS Under the direction of new head coach Matt Torok, the University of the Ozarks men’s soccer team will rely on six returning starters and a bevy of freshmen to keep the program among the American Southwest Conference’s strongest. Torok, who was hired in April after spending five seasons as the assistant, inherits a program that has qualified for post-season play 11 times since it joined the ASC in 1996, including last season when it went 7-7-5 overall. On paper, the Eagles appear ready for another playoff run, but Torok is focused on the process of building a successful team rather than wins and losses. “I haven’t talked to the guys about the playoffs,” he said. “I think that they know the ultimate goal and that is to not only make the playoffs, but to finish better than we did last year. Obviously we want to win, but I am more concerned about the process and what we are doing to be successful.” Among the six starters back are All-Conference selections Shaun Keane, Travis Leach and Austin Benner. Keane, a senior forward, scored seven goals and had two assists last season. The three-time All-Conference player has 12 career goals to his credit. Leach, a junior defender, provides Ozarks with stellar play in the back line. Leach was also an offensive threat scoring three goals and tallying one assist in 2013. Benner, a junior goalkeeper, led the ASC in saves (90) and ranked sixth in goals against average (1.50). Benner, who finished with a 7-6-5 record, posted four shutouts. “Travis, Austin and Shaun are the upperclassmen and they need to lead,” said Torok. “I have told them it is their team.” Torok believes his team will need to improve on the defensive end, and has emphasized that during preseason training sessions. Senior Daniel Garcia, junior Tony Ramos and sophomore Luke Byrne will play a big role on improving the team’s defensive efforts. “We have given up too many goals in the past,” he said. “I am an attacker at heart so I love scoring goals, but I know when you give up four goals in a game it is really hard to be successful. I think we need to clean that up. We have emphasized defending early and worked on our defensive shape. The attacking stuff is coming naturally with some of the talented guys we have.” Torok’s first recruiting class was impressive as he hauled in 13 freshmen, many of whom will see action this season.

“I have asked the freshmen to grow fast and mature faster than normal,” he said. “We have some seniors in the fold, but we are asking a lot out of the freshmen. The question will be how quickly they adapt to the bigger, faster and stronger collegiate game.” Besides Keane, the Eagles have sophomore forward Thomas Mills and junior midfielder Matt Weaver who can score goals. Mills had a sensational freshman year netting seven goals, while Weaver added four more in 2013. Additional scoring threats will come from the freshmen class, according to Torok. “My expectations will be to compete and get the guys to be the best they can be,” he said. “I do not want to concern them with wins and losses. I want them to be worried about the process, how to prepare and how to work hard. If we do things the right way, success may come. I don’t know what that success will be, but I think if we are trying to be the best we can be each day and improve, then I think we will have some success.”

Men’s Soccer NCAA Disivion III

Discover University of the Ozarks student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their interests and passions beyond the classroom and field of play...to discover themselves. Develop University of the Ozarks provides an environment that encourages student-athletes to develop into well-rounded adults. Small class sizes, the ability to participate in more than one sport, and an emphasis on participating activities outside of the classroom are all hallmarks of the NCAA Division III experience.

University of the Ozarks is a member of the NCAA Division III and the American Southwest Conference. We are a small, private, nationally acclaimed and accredited university with a “whole-student” focus. We consider athletics a huge part of developing potential for our student-athletes. We’ll offer you the support you need to win, both academically and competitively. At U of O, you’ll play the sport you love while finding the direction you need.

20

Dedicate University of the Ozarks expects student-athletes to dedicate themselves to achieving their potential. Student-athletes must manage their busy schedules, keep up with class work and face the same challenges as the rest of the student-body.

Men’s Soccer American Southwest Conference The American Southwest Conference, one of the largest intercollegiate athletic conferences in NCAA Division III, is in its second decade of providing quality athletic experiences for its student-athletes, coaches and administrators. Founded in May 1996 to provide a structure for intercollegiate athletics among member institutions, the American Southwest Conference includes former members of the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association (TIAA) and other institutions from outside the Texas borders. From the eight founding institutions to today’s present group of 12 college and universities, the ASC encompasses institutions sharing similar educational and athletic philosophies. The roster of American Southwest Conference members includes Concordia University Texas, East Texas Baptist University, Hardin-Simmons University, Howard Payne University, LeTourneau University, Louisiana College, University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, McMurry University, University of the Ozarks, Sul Ross State University, University of Texas at Dallas and University of Texas at Tyler. ASC championships are conducted in 16 sports (8 men, 8 women). Men’s championships are offered in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis and track and field. Women’s championships are offered in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field and volleyball.
