Coaching Staff
Matt Torok Head Coach Matt Torok enters his second season as head coach following a five-year stint as the assistant coach. Torok posted an impressive firstyear campaign as he was named the 2014 American Southwest Conference Coach of the Year. Torok orchestrated a three-game improvement in conference play from the previous season, and helped the program to a third-place conference finish behind a mostly freshmen squad. Torok guided Ozarks to the playoffs, leading the team all the way to the semifinals of the conference tournament. Ozarks had signature wins over conference foe Hardin-Simmons University and St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference power Westminster College during the regular season. Down the stretch, Ozarks won seven of its final 11 matches, highlighted by a four-match win streak, to qualify for the playoffs. Starting as many as seven freshmen, Torok’s team recorded their most overall wins since 2009, finishing 108-2 overall. The Eagles went 5-3-1 in conference play. Aside from his coaching duties, Torok also serves the department as the Assistant Athletic Director, a position he took on in early 2015. Torok oversees compliance for the university’s 15 NCAA III sports. As the assistant coach, Ozarks made a pair of post-season appearances, and under his guidance, Ozarks’ goalkeepers have been among the most productive in the ASC as four of his goalkeepers have earned All-Conference honors. As a head coach and assistant coach with the program, 27 players have been All-Conference and another 44 have made the ASC All-Academic Team. In 2014, he had the conference Defensive Player of the Year and the conference Freshman Defensive Player of the Year. The Eagles have earned the NSCAA Team Academic Award twice in six years. Prior to Ozarks, he was an assistant coach at Southwestern University for four seasons where he helped the Pirates to their three most successful finishes in school history. The Pirates went a combined 24-11-5 in conference matches during that span. Torok, a native of Reading, Pa., served as the assistant men’s and women’s soccer coach from
2
2003-2004 at Defiance College. He was later promoted to interim head men’s coach. He helped the team to a school record 14 wins during the 2003 season. He also recruited and coached a pair of conference Freshmen of the Year as well as the conference Goalkeeper of the Year. Previous to Defiance, he spent one year as the assistant men’s coach at Albright College. At Southwestern, Defiance and Albright, Torok coached a number of NSCAA AllRegion and All-Conference players. Torok has served as an Arkansas ODP Head Coach working at academy camps and training sessions for boys and girls. Torok has taken multiple ODP teams to the Region 3 camp in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Torok played at Syracuse University four seasons and then played two seasons professionally with the Reading Rage. He holds a NSCAA Advanced National Diploma and a NSCAA Goalkeeping Level 2 Diploma. Torok received his bachelor’s degree in sociology and psychology from Syracuse University in 2001. He has a master’s degree in education with a concentration in sports science from Defiance College. He and his wife, Carol, who is the Associate Head Volleyball Coach at the University of Arkansas, were married in December 2008. The couple are the parents of two children, Jaxen and Kaden.
Shaun Keane Student Assistant Coach Shaun Keane enters his first season as the student assistant coach after starring for the program the past four seasons. Keane ranks among the most dynamic players in program history, earning AllConference honors all four years. As a captain his senior season, Keane received All-Conference Second Team honors after scoring five goals and recording two assists. A native of Rockwall, Texas, Keane ranks ninth in school history with 17 career goals. He is also sixth in program history with 63 career shots on goal. He is currently finishing his degree in Physical Education.

Universit y of the Ozarks 2015 Preview
Eagles Eye Another Playoff Run Excitement is building for the men’s soccer team, which enters the 2015 season with nine returning starters and 22 new faces, after a successful stint a year ago. Seven freshmen starters and a new head coach didn’t faze the program in 2014 as it advanced all the way to the semi-finals of the American Southwest Conference (ASC) Tournament. Under first-year Head Coach Matt Torok, the Eagles posted a 5-3-1 record in the ASC, good enough for a third-place finish, and a 10-8-2 overall record. It was a banner year for individual honors as well with six players earning All-Conference and three earning Player of the Year awards. Even with the returning experience and talent on the roster, Torok is focusing on the program’s foundation. “I expect us to work on the foundation of our program - effort, unity and discipline,” he said. “That is the basis for what we do. We are trying to do better than we did last year. That is the expectation.” The Eagles’ defense was one of the best in the ASC last season ranking third in shutouts (7) and fifth in goals against average (1.21). Among the players fueling the defense in 2015 will be senior defender Travis Leach, who was named the Conference Defensive Player of the Year, sophomore defender Daniel Valencia, who was named Conference Freshman Defensive Player of the Year, and senior goalkeeper Austin Benner, who was named All-Conference. “We will lean on Travis and Austin,” said Torok. “They are the foundation of everything that goes on with the team right now. They are the leaders. I told them it is their team. They need to take ownership. Daniel has put in the effort over the summer and looks good at left back. And Tony Ramos will give us outstanding senior leadership. We have four out of the five in the back returning, so I expect us to be strong defensively.” Perhaps the team’s biggest challenge is early development as a unit. “We are a different team than last year,” said Torok. “It will take some time to gel and develop team chemistry. It will take some time to find who we are and where guys go.” Similar to last year, a number of new players will play into the mix in 2015. “I think the freshmen class is comparable to last year’s class,” said Torok. “I think there is some real talent. And, we brought in some really good transfers. But we have to get them acclimated to the college game. It is bigger, faster and stronger. Even for some
of the transfers, it will be a different style in this conference. I do see a lot of incoming contributions.” And with more talent comes improved competition within the team. “There is more competition this year, the most since I’ve been here,” said Torok. “There are a lot of spots open. A few positions have been locked down, namely Travis and Austin. Everything else is up for competition.” On the attack, the Eagles have junior forward Thomas Mills, who was named First Team All-Conference last season after scoring five goals and tallying three assists. Sophomore forward Bryce Young posted a team-best six goals, and senior midfielder Matt Weaver added four goals a year ago. Sophomores Alex Ross, Rondney Lo, Layne Garcia, Emilio Vega, Daniel Arend and Austin Hedgpeth saw significant minutes last season. “I look for Thomas to have a big season,” said Torok. “I hope we can find him more balls that he can put in the back of the net. With the new players and some of the returners that have improved, I hope to get better on the attack.” There are no guarantees for another playoff appearance for the tradition-rich program, according to Torok. “We have to find ourselves just like we had to last year,” said Torok. “We are a totally different team. We have to come together. We have to work hard to be in consideration for the playoffs. It is a different year.”

From the eight founding institutions to today’s present group of 13 college and universities, the ASC encompasses institutions sharing similar educational and athletic philosophies. The roster of American Southwest Conference members includes Belhaven University, Concordia University Texas, East Texas Baptist University, Hardin-Simmons University, Howard Payne University, LeTourneau University, Louisiana College, University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, McMurry University, University of the Ozarks, Sul Ross State University, University of Texas at Dallas and University of Texas at Tyler.
