He then signed with the McKinney (Texas) Blue Thunder and finished his first pro season with a 1.16 ERA. Dixon signed with the Big Bend Cowboys in Alpine, Texas, in his second professional season and was voted to the Continental League All-Star Game. Prior to his pro career, Dixon made national news when he was named the Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball after tying a conference record with 14 K’s in a game. The McAlester, Okla., product graduated with honors from Ozarks as a political science major. He was named to the ABCA All-Region Team and All-Conference Team in 2008. His career school records include strikeouts (205), innings pitched (256.2), wins (24) and games started (46).
Robert Mummey Assistant Coach Robert Mummey is in his second season as an assistant coach. Mummey started for Ozarks during the 2008 season and earned All-Conference honors. Mummey was among the team’s top hitters as the starting first baseman, ranking third on the team in homers (12) and fourth in RBI (46). Mummey’s .585 slugging percentage placed him fifth on the team and his 76 total bases placed him sixth. Mummey also saw action at third base and on the mound. His steady glove in the field produced a .978 fielding percentage. The Flower Mound, Texas, native played two seasons at Cedar Valley College in Texas where he helped the team to a third-place conference finish his sophomore campaign. He graduated from Ozarks with a degree in physical education. He and his wife, Tiffany, were married in 2009.

David Smith Assistant Coach David Smith is in his first season as an assistant coach. Smith was a four-year standout for Ozarks and ended his career ranked among the most productive players in school history. He ranks in the top-5 at Ozarks in a number of career offensive categories, including games played (144), at bats (526), hits (178), total bases (255) and stolen bases (43). He is the career leader at Ozarks in runs (138), doubles (42) and sacrifice hits (32). Smith also excelled in the outfield where he earned the school’s first-ever gold glove award from the American Baseball Coaches Association in 2008. He earned Second Team All-Conference honors following the 2009 season, and was named Honorable Mention All-Conference his junior season. The Rowlett, Texas, native graduated from Ozarks with a degree in physical education.
Lonnie Qualls In the early 1950s, Lonnie Qualls starred in three different sports at Ozarks, including football where he earned All-Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference honors for four years and conference Back of the Year in 1953. After graduating from the university, he went on to coach at Clarksville High School and led the Panther football team to an undefeated season in 1961. In 1962, Qualls was hired to coach football at Ozarks. He coached the football program from 1962 until the college dropped the sport in 1965. Over the next 30 years, Qualls coached baseball, tennis, cross country, soccer and bowling as well as taught in the physical education program. He was named NAIA District 17 Baseball Coach of the Year in 1976 and was elected to the Ozarks Sports Hall of Fame in 1990. He retired from Ozarks in 1995 after a 33year career at the university. Qualls and his wife Levada are both 1955 graduates of Ozarks. In 2005, the baseball field was named Lonnie R. Qualls. 2010 Baseball Media Guide - 5
2010 2010 SEASON PREVIEW
EAGLES FOCUSED ON FINISHING STRONG After earning their third straight trip to the post-season a year ago, the Eagles aim for a stronger finish after faltering late in the year and taking an early exist from the playoffs. When the Eagles take the field for the 2010 season, they will no doubt remember how 2009 ended. Ozarks lost seven of its last nine games, two of which came in the playoffs. While Head Coach Jimmy Clark realizes there is satisfaction in qualifying for post-season play, his focus in 2010 will revolve around finishing stronger. “We were not happy with the way things finished out last year,” said Clark. “We will try to use that as motivation. It’s now how you start, it is how you finish. We want to be consistent and not have the ups and downs. Our goal will be to play on an even keel all year long.” Ozarks went 17-25 overall and 9-9 in the American Southwest Conference East Division, good enough for third place in the East Division. The Eagles made the playoffs, but Clark’s club fell to Texas Lutheran in the first round. “Make no mistake about it, we had an off year last year and we weren’t happy,” said Clark, who enters his ninth year at Ozarks. “We are developing a little bit of a tradition and that is something the program didn’t have sev6 - 2010 Baseball Media Guide
eral years ago. Hopefully, we can make the playoffs again and make a run in it. Our goal is the same every year. We want to win the conference tournament, advance to regionals and then go to the World Series. But we have to get hot at the right time.” In order to improve their post-season aspirations and finish stronger as the season winds down, Clark knows his club must get a better performance on the mound, and his hitters must display more patience at the plate. Clark will likely call on three juniors to figure into the conference weekend rotation. The staff is anchored by hard-throwing right-hander Bobby Osburn. Fellow juniors Jonathan Cox and Travis Conner will also vie for a spot in the conference rotation. Osburn, who appeared in 18 games, second-most on the staff, finished with a 2-1 record. The 6-foot-1 right-hander recorded 21 K’s in 31.2 innings of work and posted a 6.82 ERA. “Bobby has a live arm,” said Clark. “He keeps the ball down and has a lot of movement. He has a great slider. He has been a reliever in the past, but we want him to be a starter. This fall he was our most consistent pitcher. We hope he can step into the conference rotation and go deep into the game.” Cox, who will also see time in the outfield, started three games on the mound and finished with a 0-1 record. Clark felt confident enough in Cox to start him in game one of the playoffs against Texas Lutheran.
“With Jonathan, everything he throws is down and it moves,” said Clark. “He was a guy that we anticipated a big year out of last season but he got hurt. He didn’t have the chance to pitch many innings for us.” Conner started in six games and posted a 1-2 record. In 11 appearances, he fanned 24 and logged 34.2. Conner had a standout game against Arkansas Tech University when he went 7.2 innings and struck out three. “Travis is a typical left-hander,” said Clark. “He has movement and keeps the ball down. He showed the most improvement of any pitcher we had last year. He threw as good a game against Arkansas Tech as anybody threw for us all season. I think he has a chance to be very good.” Clark believes his starters must go deep into the game in order to be successful. “We ask our starters to give us seven innings or more,” said Clark. “If they can do that, it shortens our bullpen up and we can have a lot of success. I am happy about those three guys.” Senior right-hander Bill Smith leads the pack out of the bullpen. Smith, who averages one strikeout per inning, has demonstrated the ability to be successful late in games. Fellow seniors John Phillips and Tad Turner will provide depth to the pitching staff. “Bill’s numbers have been good the past two seasons,” said Clark. “Hopefully, he can assume a bigger role this year.”
2010 2010 SEASON PREVIEW Smith went 2-1 with a 8.62 ERA in 15.2 innings of work. He logged 2.1 innings and struck out three in the first round of the playoffs. Phillips and Turner saw spot duty a year ago. Also figured into the mix is junior right-hander Brett Wood, who went 2-0 in 2008. He has logged 60.1 innings in his career. “We have to pitch better than we did last year,” said Clark. “We have to figure out the roles of our relievers. Casey Carlson has a chance to be good for us. There will be other freshmen in that mix as well.” After finishing among the ASC’s top hitting teams in 2008, the Eagles dropped to last in team batting average (.280) in 2009. “We need to be more patient at the plate,” said Clark. “As a team, we don’t like to walk a lot. We want to have productive at-bats every time at the plate. I am more interested in scoring runs. We’ve had guys in the past that may not have had high batting averages but still drove in runs. Our run production will be better than last year, but scoring is still not going to be an easy thing for us. I think it could be if we have some guys in the bottom of the order produce like they are capable of.” Run production and hitting for average are certain to improve as Ozarks boasts the top shortstop and the top two hitting catchers in the entire league. Cory Briggs, Jeremy Hogan and Scott Dietz are potentially the best middle-of-the-order hitters in the ASC. Briggs, a 2008 Second Team All-America shortstop, was named to the ASC All-East Division Second Team last year. He hit .280 with 21 runs and 17 RBI in 30 games. He was the ASC East Division Preseason Player of the Year going into last season but missed several games due to an injury. “Cory will be as good as anyone around,” said Clark. “I think he probably put some added pressure on himself last year. Hopefully, he will let his ability take over. He is definitely one of the top players to ever play here and could be the best after it is all said and done. Jeremy and Scott will be very good. We will have good hitting in the middle of the order. I’m excited about that, but we need some of our young guys to come through and produce, too.” Hogan’s numbers proved he was among the top catchers in the region. The junior led the team in batting (.357), home runs (11), RBI (44), slugging percentage (.700), hits (50), onbase percentage (.443) and total bases (98). He ranked second with 13 doubles. He hit
safely in 31 games and finished the year with a 13-game hit streak. Dietz, a junior catcher, played in only 11 games due to an injury. Hit .394 with 20 total bases and posted a .606 slugging percentage. Dietz was a major part the Eagles’ success in 2008 when he was named First Team All-Confference. “Both Jeremy and Scott are big, strong kids and competitors,” said Clark. “I’m excited about the potential of those two. We have had the best catchers in the conference recently and this year will be no exception. That is a good problem to have. We need to figure out how to get both of them in the lineup. They will probably both play a second position. With Zac (Mitchell) and Sam (Davidson), we have some depth. Hopefully, we can groom them as we go.” Dietz could fill in as a designated hitter, but another player to keep an eye on as a potential designated hitter is Michael Prusator, who Clark described as having the most power on the team. Prusator hit .294 in 11 games. Clark’s team will remain among the top defensive clubs in the conference. Ozarks finished with a .970 fielding percentage in conference play, the highest in the 15-team league. “Playing defense is as important as your pitching staff,” said Clark. “At our park, you have to rely on catching the baseball and we do a good job of that. We make a conscious effort to work on that in practice. We will be as good if not better defensively as we were last year.” Briggs anchors the infield at short, while Dietz or a newcomer could play at first base. Second base and third base are question marks, but there are a number of viable candidates, including a group of newcomers, who could fill in the rest of the infield. “Cory is the anchor at short,” said Clark. “We have some viable candidates at third. Ian (Bryan) looked the best in the fall. Mitchell (Powers) could play there and so could
Ashdon (Ayling). All three of those guys could play second as well. Jacob (Robbins), a junior college transfer, could help at first.” The outfield will again have both speed and top-notch defensive ability. Sophomore center fielder Chris Driedric returns after having an error-free rookie season. The left-hander started in 31 games and hit .234. He did not commit an error in 37 games played. Rounding out the outfield positions could be Cox, Hogan, Arturo Perez, or perhaps a first-year player. Perez has a keen eye at the plate and has five starts under his belt. He hit .235 in 13 games. “Chris is as good defensively as we have had here,” said Clark. “He has made some strides offensively. He has a year under his belt and will be improved. Cox’s versatility could land him in left field. He is good defensively. He is fast and can steal some bases. He is a lead-off type guy. Freshman Mike Schmeck won the right field job in the fall. Arturo will be in the mix, too. We will try a lot of different guys out at first and third and the corner spots in the outfield to see how it all works out. We are looking for our best nine.” While there may be a few unknowns heading into the season, Clark does have options around the diamond. “We have a lot of things up in the air,” said Clark. “The first month of the season we will probably platoon and see who does the best job. Hopefully this will allow us to develop some depth. I’m excited about this freshman class as a group. It is one of the more talented classed we have brought in.” Consistency, too, is a key to the 2010 team, something the Eagles must improve on from last year’s up-and-down season. “We didn’t do a very good job playing game-to-game last year,” said Clark. “You can’t live on what you’ve done in the past and we tried to do that a little bit last year. We have some potential and I’m excited about the talent we have, but we still have a lot of work to do.” 2010 Baseball Media Guide - 7

2010 2009 REVIEW Eagles Make It Three Straight The Eagles advanced to the American Southwest Conference playoffs for the third straight season under head coach Jimmy Clark. The Eagles were the No. 4 seed from the East Division and took on the West Division champion Texas Lutheran University last season. Texas Lutheran took the best-of-three series to eliminate Ozarks from post-season action. In 2008, the Eagles made it to the first round only to see their season end with a game-three loss to Concordia University Texas. In 2007, Clark led the club to the program’s first ASC postseason appearance, advancing all the way to the championship round.
Preseason Honors For Briggs, Cameron Teammates Cory Briggs and Bruce Cameron shared the American Southwest Conference East Division 2009 Preseason Player of the Year honor. Briggs, a shortstop, hit .467 in 2008 to win the ASC batting title, and also produced 8 home runs, 19 doubles and 54 RBIs. Cameron, an outfielder who also pitches, batted .410 with 14 homers, 12 doubles and 49 RBIs. In 2008, he also posted an .827 slugging percentage. He went 5-1 on the mound with a 3.35 ERA in 48.1 innings of work. Additionally, Cameron was selected to the 2009 D3baseball. com Preseason All-America Second Team. Cameron was named to the preseason list as a utility player. Academics Recognized On Team Two members of the baseball team were named to the 2009 American Southwest Conference All-Academic Team. To be eligible for ASC All-Academic honors, student-athletes must have lettered in the 2009 season, be in at least their second academic year at their institution, and carry a career grade-point average of 3.00 or better. Junior shortstop Cory Briggs, an early childhood education major from Greencastle, Pa., and sophomore designated hitter/outfielder Arturo Perez, a management major from Caracas, Venezuela, received the honor. Eagles Top Nationally-Ranked Opponent Ozarks’ All-America Bruce Cameron stymied UT-Tyler in a 3-1 win March 22 in Clarksville. Cameron worked seven innings, fanned four and allowed just three hits against the top hitting team in the conference and the No.4 ranked NCAA III team in the country. UT-Tyler held a 1-0 advantage for five and one-half innings before the Eagles’ offense went to work for Cameron. With a 3-1 lead, it was up to the right-handed Cameron to finish off the Patriots in the final inning. He forced a grounder against his first batter, and then allowed a walk. But Cameron’s gem stayed intact when he got Chris Tucker to strike out swinging for the second out. Cameron then recorded another strikeout to end it.

For 175 years, University of the Ozarks has approached education with an unyielding search for truth. That search led our founders to establish the first co-educational college west of the Mississippi. It set the stage for the first Arkansas woman to receive a college degree. And because truth often defies convention, ours was the first historically white college in the state to admit African-Americans. Every day, our history inspires Ozarks students to discover their own individual truths. But we won’t expect you to find the answers alone. Through every step of your search, we’ll stand by you as true scholars, mentors, and friends. Founded in 1834 as Cane Hill School, University of the Ozarks is a private, four-year comprehensive university affiliated with the Presbyterian Church. Located on 30 acres in Clarksville, Arkansas (pop. 7,500), Ozarks is home to about 675 students from 22 states and 20 countries. More than 80 percent of our faculty hold the highest degrees in their fields. Because we’re small by design, our average class size is 14 and the student/ faculty ratio is 13:1. More than 60 majors, minors, and preprofessional degrees, from Composite Science to Strategic Communications are offered. Many Ozarks graduates also go on to top graduate programs in law, medicine, and engineering.
The central mall of campus is flanked by historic Munger Chapel and Walker Hall, a $7 million facility that houses a television studio, radio station, and state-of-the art editing suites. The 38,000-square-foot Robson Library houses more than 175,000 items for reading and research. Seventy-five percent of students live on campus in one of six residence halls that feature such perks as recreation rooms and in-room computer connections. At roughly half the national average for a private, liberal arts education, University of the Ozarks’ tuition offers exceptional value. About 95 percent of students receive some type of financial aid, including scholarships, grants, loans, and work study. Over $7.7 million in financial aid is distributed annually. You may have heard that a liberal arts education is all about mental agility, intellectual prowess, service to others, and critical thinking. We couldn’t agree more. But at Ozarks, we’re also steeped in the tradition of preparedness – for your career, for graduate school, for life. A key part of being prepared is knowing when to ask for help. Ozarks’ Student Support Services (SSS) provides free tutoring, a 24-hour computer lab, resume assistance, career and grad school strategies, and more than a dozen other services to help students achieve their very best. Internships are an essential part of the college experience, allowing you to practice newfound skills “in the field” and try a career (or two)
THE UNIVERSITY OF THE OZARKS
on for size. Ozarks interns are doing research in polymer chemistry, working with the forest service, and volunteering for national political campaigns. Just how much can one student get involved? One Ozarks student landed internships at both the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. and the FOX News Network in Manhattan and created films for Little Rock’s “48 Hour Film Festival” as well as the Cinequest Film Festival. Once Ozarks graduates get out into the world, there’s no stopping them. Our alumni pursue a truly incredible array of careers, from writing for ad agencies and practicing clinical psychology to working for the Secret Service. And if you’re interested in furthering your education, expect to be in good company. More than 85 percent of Ozarks students who apply are accepted to top graduate, medical, and law schools. If you’re not accustomed to personal interaction with your instructors, you’ll get used to it soon enough. Both in and out of class, Ozarks faculty demand accountability (don’t be surprised if you get a phone call from your professor when you miss class). That sort of “personal attention” is just one example of our genuine concern for each individual student’s progress. Our faculty is known for inspiring remarkable acts. With their help, students are studying abroad in Strasburg, Florence, and Hong Kong. They’re learning about new forms of international currency trading from experts in the field, and using their Latin skills to enhance research papers on medieval
drama. If this sounds more like master’s work than undergraduate, it’s no accident. Because University of the Ozarks is small by design, professors have the time to delve deeply into every student’s interests – and help make the most of their talents. In the political science program, Dr. Gil Parks’ students are researching national human rights legislation at American University in D.C. and taking on internships with the National Republican Senatorial Committee. They’re also attending law schools nationwide, including Notre Dame, Pepperdine, and Georgetown. Similarly, Dr. Sean Coleman encourages his pre-med students to take full advantage of the liberal arts, with foreign language minors, and immersion trips to countries like Mexico and Italy. With over 40 clubs and organizations to choose from, it isn’t hard to find one you’re truly passionate about. For some, it’s a club with academic affiliations like Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) – a global, non-profit organization that helps members develop leadership, teamwork, and communication skills by championing free enterprise and community service. Others pursue more personal passions by joining Amnesty International, College Republicans, or Young Democrats. And if you’re simply looking to have fun, you won’t be disappointed. In the student
center, ping-pong matches have been known to go on for hours, and you never know when a soccer game might break out in the quad. Movie nights often hit the big screens in the residence halls, where camaraderie and community come together. At Ozarks, serious sports fans have a lot to cheer about. As a member of NCAA Division III and the American Southwest Conference, our teams square off against competitors from Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Mississippi. Our teams make the playoffs and our student-athletes consistently earn All-America and All-Conference honors. Our Eagles compete academically, too. They regularly appear on ASC all-academic rosters and are recognized for high marks by national organizations. Fans pack the house for home basketball games at charming Mabee Gymnasium. The student section is well-known by opposing teams as vocal and energetic, giving the Eagles a true home court advantage.
