Laurie Adkins Head Coach Laurie Adkins begins her first season at the University of the Ozarks. Adkins has softball experience ranging from the NCAA I college ranks to high-level summer travel teams. Adkins, a native of Farmington, spent the 1998 and 1999 seasons at the University of Arkansas as a volunteer assistant and then went to Northwest Arkansas Community College to serve as the head coach of their club team. From 2001-2002, Adkins was the head coach at Fayetteville High School where she quickly turned the program into a winner, leading the Lady Bulldogs to back-to-back state tournaments. Adkins, who has never experienced a losing season as a head coach, was instrumental in the development of fastpitch softball in Arkansas. She has been a head coach of travel teams, given private softball lessons and taught at a number of regional softball clinics for more than a decade around the state. “I’m excited about selling the University of the Ozarks,” said Adkins. “The campus is beautiful and the school has a lot to offer academically. I think the fact that we have such a diverse academic offering is appealing. The 13:1 faculty/student ratio is also a selling point. The faculty here are top-notch, too.” Adkins believes all aspects of the game must be in place in order to develop a winning program. “I want to have all the pieces to the puzzle,” said Adkins. “I believe if you don’t have every aspect of the game covered you have a chink in your armor. We are fortunate that we play in such a strong conference. We don’t have to go far away to get good competition. We know where we need to be. We are in building mode and my expectations are to start the building process. We have a long way to go, but we’ll get there with some dedication.” Adkins received her bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from University of Arkansas in 1999. She is currently pursing her master’s degree in kinesiology from Texas Women’s University. She is a member of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. Adkins has four children: Annie (27), Madi (23), Ben (19) and Jake (18). Chelsea Joslin Assistant Coach Chelsea Joslin enters her second year as an assistant coach at Ozarks. Joslin, a native of Claremore, Okla., had a recordsetting four-year playing career at Ozarks. A first baseman and catcher, Joslin was among the elite power hitters in the American Southwest Conference from 2005-2008. She is second all-time in the ASC in home runs with 32. Joslin owns career school records in home runs, batting (.378), slugging percentage (.647), RBI (131) and total bases (281). She owns a number of single-season offensive records at her alma mater. She was named to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Region Team in 2008 and was a four-time All-Conference player. During her career, she was also a member of the ASC All-Academic Team. Joslin received her bachelor’s degree in Physical Education in 2008. She is currently pursuing her master’s degree in Kinesiology from UT-Permian Basin.

Sarah Otteman Veteran Adkins Takes Over Softball Program New University of the Ozarks head softball coach Laurie Adkins is anxiously engaged in developing a competitive team for the 2011 season. Adkins faces the task of rebuilding a program that hasn’t had a winning season in six years. The Lady Eagles posted a 9-31 overall record and a 3-21 record in the American Southwest Conference last season. And, competition is abundant within the ASC, easily the top NCAA III softball conference in the nation. ASC East Division opponent East Texas Baptist University captured the national title in 2011 and three other teams within the league finished in the top-25. But Adkins welcomes the challenge, and has an expectation of making strides in her first season. The team boasts a solid recruiting class filled with impact players to go along with an experienced group that has battled in the ASC. In all, seven starters return for Adkins. “I’m excited because we have a lot of youth on the team, but we also have a lot of experience,” said Adkins, who turned Fayetteville High School into a state contender. “I am excited about the young talent we have. We have the experienced players to anchor us in the ASC. We seem to be jelling really well. We all have the same vision for the team. We want to build and be strong competitors in the ASC.” Leading the way for Ozarks is a trio of All-Conference players. Senior Sarah Otteman, junior Kelsey Mefford and sophomore Ali Mathis form a nucleus to begin Adkins’ transformation process. Otteman is the team’s lone senior and has been a two-time All-Conference player. Otteman, a first baseman, hit .250 with two doubles and 6 RBI in 30 games. She led the team with seven stolen bases and ranks eighth at Ozarks in career hits (94). Mefford, a pitcher and third baseman, led the team in nearly every offensive category, Ali Mathis including batting (.369), hits (38), home runs (6), RBI (28), doubles (12) and slugging percentage (.680). Her home run total tied her for fourth in the ASC and her slugging percentage placed her sixth. Mathis, a left fielder, led the team in triples with three. The left-handed hitter finished second on the team in doubles (11), RBI (19), hits (37), runs (23), slugging percentage (.471) and total bases (57). She was third in batting (.306). “Kelsey and Sarah have shown they have some power and smarts,” said Adkins. “Sarah makes contact with the ball. She will pull out some multi-base hits. Mathis is solid. She is exciting to watch.” That trio, along with the incoming class, will play major roles under Adkins. No doubt a concern for Adkins is the potential for inconsistency with so many freshmen likely to play. “A young team will ride a roller coaster,” said Adkins. “You win games you shouldn’t and you lose games you shouldn’t. I think this a dynamic class. It is difficult to narrow them down to a certain word because we do have experience,

pitching and versatility. But the potential is there and we are excited for the challenges this year. It will be fun.” Otteman and junior Kelsey Stephens are battling for time at first base. Stephens hit .293 in 40 starts and drove in 17. Both can hit to the gaps. “Who plays first will depend on how productive they are at the plate,” said Adkins. “If one is not playing first, the other will probably see some time at the plate anyway. We want to keep those two bats in the game.” At the other corner, Mefford, and freshmen Casey Mays and Heather Roberts are battling for playing time, according to Adkins. Junior Morgan Goates is the returning starter at second base, but could be pushed by a number of players, including freshmen Arlisa Arwood and Michelle Pelley. Goates finished second on the team in batting (.308), and produced seven doubles and 11 RBI in 2011. “Morgan was productive last season for the team,” said Adkins. “Arlisa can hit so it would be smart to keep her in the game. Pelley can play second, too.” The shortstop position could fall to a newcomer. Freshman Whitley Borin is a talent there with a strong arm and Arel Ferguson has the ability to step in and be a factor. “Whitley has a lot of skills at shortstop and is leading the pack,” said Adkins. “Arel has also gotten some work there. She showed us in the fall she is a gamer.” Mathis leads an outfield that includes Colbey Russo in center field. Russo, a junior, started in 40 games and has good speed. Rebecca Groff, a junior, is among a collection players competing for time in right field. “Ali and Colbey anchor the outfield,” said Adkins. “They are experienced players. Colbey is willing to do whatever it takes for the team. She can be productive. Rebecca gives a lot out there. Molly Bowman has done a great job in the outfield. She is very fluid and is a great base runner and a contact hitter. She has a lot of potential. Ashley Bush will sacrifice for the ball. She is always in the right spot.” The pitching staff is centered on a pair of returning players and three freshmen. Mefford and junior Kaci Foster return in the circle and will be joined by freshmen Britnee Summers, Arlisa Arwood and Tabitha Porter. Mefford struck out 25 in 59.2 innings of work and posted two wins. Foster tossed a no-hitter and helped throw a combined no-hitter last season. She went 2-5 in 42.0 innings. “We have five pitchers on the staff,” said Adkins. “Obviously, our freshmen will see some time this year. I think both Kelsey and Kaci have improved. Kaci throws harder now and Kelsey is hitting her spots more accurately. We have different kinds of pitching. I think we are going to be able to pull off what we need.” The catching duties will fall to freshman Kelsey Hallman. “Kelsey is ready to step up,” said Adkins. “The backup position is open. Casey is a possibility, and so are Arel and Heather.” Adkins has created a new brand at Ozarks Kelsey Mefford that has produced an eagerness to make Ozarks competitive. “We have a goal to be better every day,” said Adkins. “As long as we continue to improve, there are no limits. Everyone is committed. Our broad goal is to be competitive in the ASC, and I think with this group of kids it is a good goal to have. The players have worked hard. There is not an option in that regard. We have already made a lot of progress.” Ozarks must improve its defense to be among the ASC’s elite. The Lady Eagles committed 90 errors in the field in 2010. “I think one of the keys is to insist that errors not happen,” said Adkins. “When you start thinking, you get slower and start making mistakes. You need to do what your body is used to. We have girls that have been in some highly competitive situations, and playing as freshmen should not shake them. I fully expect to see improvement in the field.” Another concern for Adkins is the lack of team speed. Ozarks stole only 39 bases last season. “We don’t have a lot of speed,” said Adkins. “We need people to emerge as strong base runners. Molly, Colbey and Michelle have some speed. We have some fast girls, but only a few of them.” Offensively, Adkins expects to use a variety of ways to generate runs. “We think we will have to mix it up,” said Adkins. “I firmly believe you take what you have and maximize it. I really think it will be a combination of short and long. We do have some heavy bats that can be beneficial.”

Three Named To All-Conference Team
Junior shortstop Sarah Otteman, sophomore third baseman/pitcher Kelsey Mefford and freshman outfielder Ali Mathis were named to the 2010 American Southwest Conference All-East Division Honorable Mention Team. Otteman, a native of Lockport, Ill., hit .250 with two doubles and 6 RBI in 30 games. The right-hander led the team with seven stolen bases. She had five multiple-hit games. Her most productive game of Sarah Otteman the season came against Howard Payne University when she went 2-for-2 with 4 RBI. Otteman, who owns a .396 career on-base percentage, ranks eighth at Ozarks in career hits (94) and is the career leader in hit by pitch (14). Mefford, a native of Clarksville, made the All-Conference Team as a utility player. Mefford led the team in nearly every offensive category, including batting (.369), hits (38), home runs (6), RBI (28), doubles (12), total bases (70), runs (28), slugging percentage (.680) and on-base percentage (.449). Her home run total tied her for fourth in the ASC and her slugging percentage placed her sixth. Mefford produced eight multiple-hit games and hit safely in 28 games. Her best game of the season came against Hillsdale Baptist when she homered twice and drove in 5 runs. In the circle, Mefford struck out 25 in 59.2 innings of work. The right-hander posted two wins. Mathis, from Lebanon, Mo., led the team in triples with three. Mathis, who started in all 40 games, finished second on the team in doubles (11), RBI (19), hits (37), runs (23), slugging percentage (.471) and total bases (57). She was third in batting (.306). She produced a 2-for-3, 3-RBI performance against Blackburn College. The left-handed hitter, who played left field, had a team-best 11 multiple-hit games and produced two or more runs seven times.
Foster Makes ASC All-Academic Team
Kaci Foster, a sophomore economics major from Decatur, Ark., was named to the 2010 spring American Southwest Conference All-Academic Team. To be eligible for ASC All-Academic honors, studentathletes must have lettered, be in at least their second academic year at their institution, and carry a career gradepoint average of 3.00 or better. Foster
also excelled in the circle, pitching the school’s second no-hitter.
Foster Makes History In The Circle Kaci Foster had a memorable sophomore season as she pitched the school’s second no-hitter, and then later in the year was part of another. The sophomore right-hander from Decatur, Ark., was making her third start of the season against Blackburn College March 8 in Clarksville and Kaci Foster tossed the only no-hitter by a single pitcher in program history. She did not issue a walk and allowed just two base runners in the five inning contest, both of which came on errors. Blackburn’s biggest threat came in the second inning when a base runner reached on an error, and eventually made it to third. However, Foster quickly erased the threat by forcing a groundout to end the frame. With the no-hit feat intact going into the fifth inning, Foster got two easy outs and then completed the no-hitter and shutout with a strikeout. Just eight days later, Foster combined with Stephany Henson for a no-hitter against Hillsdale Baptist College March 16. Foster went the final two innings and did not issue a walk. Henson Rewrites Record Books
Right-handed pitcher Stephany Henson ended her four-year career on the softball team with a number of school records following the 2010 season. She has thrown 501.1 career innings, most in school history, and has the career record in appearances (100) and starts (80). She is second with 208 strikeouts. Henson’s reputation as a hard-nosed player was evident in her willingness to play through pain. She never missed a game due to an injury. Henson garnered AllConference honors after finishing seventh in the American Southwest Conference in shutouts (3) and eighth in complete games (15) her freshman seaStephany Henson son. She posted ten wins that season and had a perfect game through six innings against Hendrix College. She led the team in nearly every pitching category throughout her fouryear career.
