Wiseman Optimistic About 2012 Season

Women’s Preview Info

With the talent already present and the ushering in of new players, the Lady Eagles hope to improve on what they accomplished last year and make more history in the process. Head Coach Shaun Wiseman says his expectations for this season are to make it to the playoffs.

T h e Lady Eagles

“We have consistently been fourth in the conference since I’ve started coaching,” Wiseman said. “I’m looking forward to continuing our progress as a program and a team. I’m really excited for this upcoming season and my expectations are for these girls to make it to the playoffs.”

T h e Eagles

Only the top three teams in the division qualify for the playoffs. UT-Tyler and UT-Dallas are nationally ranked and they will be Ozarks toughest competition.

Ozarks

Ozarks Eagles

The captains for the Lady Eagles are Chelsea Glasscock and Tara Richards. They both came in as freshman and have stayed and continued to grow through the program. In 2010, both Glasscock and Richards received ASC All-East Division Honorable Mention Team honors for doubles. Sophomore Whitney Lewis is also considered a leader for the Lady Eagles. Lewis has a work ethic that is unrivaled. “She is out there in 20 degree weather hitting against the backboard and running sprints on the courts in the middle of December. You don’t see that kind of commitment much and it is wonderful as a coach to see that,” Wiseman said. “It puts a smile on your face.” According to Wiseman, “We have a closer-knit group on the women’s side than we have ever had.” Wiseman’s goal is to have a family oriented team that is centered on academics first, then social development, and then athletics. They have the highest team grade point average since his arrival and the highest quality caliber of tennis players. Tennis fans can get their first glimpse of the Lady Eagles February 11 at the Hendrix College Invitational.

Season Review Ozarks finished fifth (1-4) in conference and 5-9 overall. Chelsea Glasscock was the only member of the women’s team to receive the ASC All-Academic award. To be eligible for ASC All-Academic honors, student-athletes must have lettered in the 2011 season, be in at least their second academic year at their institution, and carry a career grade-point average of 3.00 or better. Glasscock and Cook posted a team-best 4-4 doubles record. 14

Freshmen Expected to Lead Eagles

Expectations are high for the freshmen as the Eagles head into the Spring season. Head Coach Shaun Wiseman says his expectations for this season are to qualify for the playoffs. His team has finished fifth the last three years.

T h e Eagles

“We definitely have the talent to improve, but these guys are young and they are hungry and they are willing to do anything and I believe that this year they are up there with the East Division’s top three,” said Wiseman. “The team this year is full of potential and talent.”

Ozarks

Coming into this spring season, the Eagles have six freshmen: Bishop Bass, Bill Blake, Corey Dillard, Bryant Ford, Greg Knaggs, and Todd Turner. According to Wiseman, these players know their game really well. Five out of the six freshmen are in the singles line-up. “That’s a scary thing for any coach but these guys play so much beyond their years that there is a calming maturity about them that you don’t normally find in freshmen,” said Wiseman. “I keep waiting for the reality to hit that they are a just a bunch of 18-year old guys, but the truth is these guys are mature and are like 18-year old men already.” The Eagles want to continue to get better and lean on the leadership of their captains, Matt Arant and Tanner Holman. Arant had a successful season last year, receiving Capital One Academic All-American (All-District) team honors. He looks to be a strong competitor and leader this season. Arant came in as a freshman and Wiseman has enjoyed watching him grow up and become a man. Wiseman is hopeful that the team can reward the seniors for sticking with the program, especially Arant who has been with the program all four years. Arant and Holman cannot carry the team alone, however, and will need the support of their teammates to be successful. “The biggest thing is that we have a closer-knit group on the men’s side than we have ever had,” said Wiseman. Wiseman’s goal is to have a family oriented team that is centered on academics first, then social development, and then athletics. The Eagles have the highest team grade point average since his arrival and the highest quality caliber of players. Optimism is high as the Eagles start off the new season February 11th at the Hendrix College Invitational.
