Carl Ramsey Head Coach Carl Ramsey begins his third season as Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Ozarks. Ramsey made the jump to his alma mater after building one of the top high school girl’s basketball programs in Arkansas. In year two at Ozarks, Ramsey led the Lady Eagles to the playoffs and posted the program’s first winning record in nearly a decade. Ramsey orchestrated a seven-game improvement from his first season to his second. Ozarks ended the 2010-11 season with a 14-12 overall mark, the first winning record since 20012002. His 2010-2011 team was the top three-point shooting team in the conference and ninth-best in NCAA III, hitting nearly eight per game. His team also led the league in assists per game (17.0) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.1). Four of his players earned Player of the Week honors during that season. He has had a combined five players earn All-Conference honors and two earn All-Freshmen Team honors the past two years. Three players have been voted to the prestigious Academic AllAmerica Team, and 11 of his players have been on the All-Academic Team during his tenure at Ozarks. Over 29 years at Lamar, Ramsey’s senior high teams averaged 22 wins during his career and he has posted a 660-227 (.744) overall record. He led Lamar to eight state tournament appearances during his tenure, including a stretch of four straight years where the Lady Warriors played for the state championship (1987-1991). He won state titles in both 1988 and 1991. 19 of his teams produced more than 20 wins. He coached 22 AllState players and five who played in the Arkansas Activities Association All-Star Game. Ramsey, who never had a losing season at Lamar, guided his teams to 24 regional tournament appearances. Six of his teams went to the regional championship game, with three of those winning the title. In addition to his coaching career, he served as the school’s athletic director for 24 years. Additionally, Ramsey was voted the Conference Coach of the Year 10 times and was a five-time KARV Dream Team Coach of the Year honoree. In 1990, he was the head coach of the West team in the Arkansas Activities Association All-Star Game. Ramsey received his bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from Ozarks in 1979. Ramsey and his wife, Kathy, are the parents of one son and one daughter.

Expectations At A Fever Pitch Expectations are at a fever pitch for Carl Ramsey’s Lady Eagles following a postseason appearance and the return of all five starters. The Lady Eagles have their sights set high after orchestrating a seven-game improvement from the previous season under Ramsey. The 2010-11 team posted its first winning record in nearly a decade and broke a three-year playoff drought. Spurred by the momentum of last season, the Lady Eagles appear primed to challenge for a divisional title. “We got a taste of success last year and that makes the players hungry,” said Ramsey, who was voted American Southwest Conference East Division Coach of the Year. “Qualifying for the playoffs left a good taste in their mouths. The players believe they deserve to be there and we tried to prove that last year.” Ramsey has five seniors to work with and 90 percent of his scoring back. It is a senior class that is attempting to go from worst to first over a four-year span. The 2008-09 team went 5-20 and finished last in the East Division. Three years later, the Lady Eagles are expected to compete for a shot to host the playoffs as the No. 1 seed from the Division. “We are going into this season looking at it as a challenge and an opportunity for these seniors to go out in style,” said Ramsey. “They have been through a lot. They’ve paid a price. I think they are hungry and excited. The entire team has been ready every day.” The senior class includes ASC Preseason

Player of the Year Sabrina Goddard, April Young and Lacey Phillips, both All-Conference players, and Ashley Teague and Alison Villines. The 6-foot-1 Goddard, who averaged 15.5 points, 7.9 rebounds and 2.8 blocks per game, is expected to be a go-to player again this season. Goddard, who was a Second Team All-Conference pick a year ago, was named ASC Player of the Week three Goddard times. “Sabrina gives us such a presence inside defensively,” said Ramsey. “Offensively, she can shoot with either hand and spin either way. And that makes her awfully difficult to guard. But she is not the only player we have.” Goddard no doubt benefits from one of the NCAA III’s top three-point shooting teams as Ozarks ranked ninth in three-pointers per game (7.9) last season. Ozarks possesses three of the league’s top fifteen three-point shooters in Young, Phillips and junior Chelsea Glasscock. Young hit a team-best 58-of-139, while Phillips (28-of-73) and Glasscock (43-of-107) assist in forming a potent outside attack for Ozarks. “Our identity is that we are a three-point shooting team,” said Ramsey. “The fact that we can shoot the three makes it difficult to pack it in on Sabrina. I think those two things complement each other. I think the fact that Young she is a presence inside is a reason we get so many three-pointers. We have a + 2011-12 Media Guide +

balanced attack offensively. We will take what the defense gives us.” That balance was a key to last year’s success, and will again play a big part of this year’s push for the playoffs. “I don’t feel like you can point to just one player and say that is the reason we were successful,” he said. “Everyone brings something different to the table. If everyone accepts their roles, we will have a good situation. It will not be a one man game.” On the perimeter, Ozarks returns Glasscock and Villines at the point guard position. Glasscock started in all 26 games and averaged 7.4 points, 2.4 assists and 1.5 steals per game. The savvy Villines had three starts and Villines averaged 4.8 points and nearly two assists per contest. “They play a different style at the point,” said Ramsey. “Chelsea does a good job of keeping us in an offense while Alison pushes the ball a little more. Alison has overcome a lot of injuries and is now playing the best I have seen her play.” The shooting guard spot belongs to the prolific Young, who earned All-Conference Second Team honors last season. Young is a career 34 percent shooter from three-point range. She has hit 130-of-375 from long range and ranked second on the team in points per game (11.3) last season. The versatile Phillips is a solid all-around performer who possesses a career 8.6 point per game average. Phillips, too, earned All-Conference Second Team honors last season after leading the team in assists (4.9), while averaging 8.8 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. “Lacey is a great slicer and can shoot from the perimeter,” said Ramsey. “She can also get to the rim. April has a quick release and can come off screens and shoot the three.” Assisting inside and out Phillips is Teague, who started in all 26 games and netted 7.8 points per game last season. Athletic sophomore forward Ashley Barry is expected to play an expanded role this season. Barry was named to the ASC East Division All-Freshman Team after scoring 5.3 points and grabbing 4.3 rebounds per game. Transfer Jordyn Ferrell is a talented junior who can play a number of positions. “Ashley Teague is more of a three-point type shooter,” he said. “But she is physical and goes all out. Ashley Barry is an athletic player who can go get the ball off the boards.”

+ 2011-12 Media Guide +

The veteran coach sees it important that the Lady Eagles improve their rebounding efforts and decision making throughout the season. With added depth, Ramsey plans to utilize his guards to push the ball more. “We still need to be a better rebounding ball club,” he said. “We need to do more blocking out and be better at the fundamental part of it. We need to get Teague good position and not count on athletic ability.” “This year we are trying to push the ball up a little more and play up-tempo, but at the same time we need to be disciplined. We would like to do some things with our defense to create some easy shots. We need to be disciplined enough to know when the fast break is not there.” Success, according to Ramsey, hinges on finding the right balance of players and team chemistry. Last season the Lady Eagles posted a 14-12 overall mark and a 10-10 mark in conference play. “Playing as a unit and being cohesive will be important,” he said. “Team chemistry will be imperative. I think we have to be ready to play. You have to keep working and going. The cumulative factor of playing 40 minutes every night can wear players down. We can rest kids in games and be a little fresher towards the end of the season with that depth.” Qualifying for postseason play is always difficult in the competitive ASC, and Ramsey believes this year will be no different. “Last year, we talked about going to the playoffs,” said Ramsey. “I believe you set goals high and set goals that push you. This year, I don’t want to cheat the kids and not try for the best. We can’t get complacent. This is a tough league.”

Goddard, a 6-foot-1 native of Stroud, Okla., finished sixth in the conference in scoring (15.4), eighth in rebounding (7.9) and second in blocks (2.8). Goddard started in all 26 games and was the team-leader in all the aforementioned categories and free throws (93). She led the team in scoring 15 times and rebounding 17 times. Goddard reached double figures in scoring 22 times and produced at least 20 points in nine games. Additionally, she posted five double-doubles. Against Howard Payne University November 29, she scored a career-high 34 points and went 14-of-18 from the free throw line. She was named ASC Player of the Week three times. Young, a 5-foot-7 native of Deer, led the ASC in three-pointers per game (2.2) and three-point percentage (41.7%). She finished seventh in assists (3.2) and twenty-third in scoring (11.3). Young was second on the team in scoring, rebounding and assists. She hit 58-of-139 from the three-point line and her three-point percentage placed her nineteenth in NCAA III. She reached double figures in scoring 17 times, including a 26-point outburst against Texas-Tyler February 19. She made at least two three-pointers in 19 games, including a season-high five against Hendrix College. Phillips, a 5-foot-8 native of Clarksville, finished in the top-15 in five different categories among ASC players. She finished second in assists (4.9) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.7), twelfth in field goal percentage (46.4%), thirteenth in steals (1.3) and fourteenth in three-pointers per game (1.3). She averaged 8.8 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. She hit 28-of-73 from the three-point line and 26-of-32 from the free throw line. Against Mississippi College January 22, she nearly had a triple-double, scoring 12 points, grabbing 10 rebounds and dishing out nine assists. She earned Player of the Week honors from D3Hoops.com for that performance. Barry, a 5-foot-8 native of Hallsville, Texas, played in all 26 games and averaged 5.3 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. Barry’s rebound average ranked second on the team. She reached double figures three times during the season and had five or more rebounds 15 times. She had 13 points and eight rebounds in her first career game at Ozarks.

Carl Ramsey was named the American Southwest Conference East Division Coach of the Year following the 2010-11 season. Ramsey, who led the Lady Eagles to the playoffs in just his second season, posted the program’s first winning record in nearly a decade. Ramsey orchestrated a sevengame improvement from the previous season and the Lady Eagles qualified for the playoffs for the first time since the 20062007 season. Ozarks ended the year with a 14-12 overall mark, the first winning record since 2001-2002. Ramsey’s team pulled out wins against ASC champion Howard Payne University November 29 and swept Mississippi College for the first time ever. The Lady Eagles finished conference play with a 10-10 record, good enough for fourth-place in the East Division. Ozarks started the season 6-0 and ended the year winning four of its last five to qualify for the post-season. His team was the top three-point shooting team in the conference and ninth-best in NCAA III, hitting nearly eight per game and 36.1 percent of their attempts. His team also led the league in assists per game (17.0) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.1). Four of his players earned Player of the Week honors during the season. He has had a combined five players earn All-Conference honors and two earn All-Freshmen Team honors the past two seasons. Three players have been voted to the prestigious Academic All-America Team, and 11 of his players have been on the All-Academic Team during his tenure at Ozarks. He was named Conference Coach of the Year at Lamar High School ten times during his 29-year career.

Postseason Bound The Lady Eagles qualified for the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament as the No. 4 seed from the East Division and took on Howard Payne University. A playoff-clinching win over Texas-Tyler on February 19 put Ozarks in the tournament for the first time since the 2006-2007 season. In just his second year at Ozarks, Head Coach Carl Ramsey not only led the Lady Eagles to post-season play, but also guided the program to its first winning season in nearly a decade. Ozarks started the season 6-0 before suffering a four-game losing skid. Ozarks then played well late in the year, capped by winning four of its last five games to qualify for the playoffs. Ozarks was the top three-point shooting team in the ASC, hitting eight per game and making over 36 percent of its shots from long-range. Howard Payne defeated the Lady Eagles 59-42 in Brownwood, Texas, in the first round.
