Jason Zastrow Head Coach Jason Zastrow begins his second season as head men’s wrestling coach after starting the program last year. Zastrow landed a talented recruiting class for the 20152016 season to bring even more promise to the young program. Zastrow, a native of Coon Rapids, Minn., brought NCAA Division III championship experience from wrestling powerhouse Wartburg to Ozarks. Wartburg is the most dominant NCAA Division III men’s wrestling program in the country having won 11 national titles. Zastrow served as the assistant from 2010-2013 where he helped Wartburg to three consecutive NCAA Division III titles. The Knights also won three National Wrestling Coaches Association dual titles at the national level and three Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles. The Knights posted a 56-1 record during his time there. During his tenure, the program produced seven individual NCAA Division III titles, 22 All-Americans and 17 Academic AllAmericans. Prior to Wartburg, he was the assistant coach at NCAA Division III Central College from 2007-2010, where he helped turn the program around. His first season as an assistant, the Dutch went 0-12, but by his third year, the program posted a ten-win season. After Central College, he went to Springdale Har-Ber High School, where he served as the assistant coach during the 2013-2014 season. In his one season there, the Wildcats won a conference title and finished third in the state championships.

Zastrow was accepted into the prestigious National Wrestling Coaches Association Leadership Academy in 2015. Zastrow was part of an elite group of collegiate wrestling coaches chosen by the NWCA to help grow the sport. As a collegiate wrestler, Zastrow thrived at Wartburg lettering four seasons and qualifying for nationals his senior year. Zastrow received his bachelor’s degree in history from Wartburg in 2007. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in athletic administration from Coker College. He and his wife, Jenny, were married in 2011.
Jason Schweer Assistant Coach Jason Schweer was named the new assistant wrestling coach at the University of the Ozarks in August (2015). Schweer, a native of Waverly, Iowa, brings national championship experience from Grand View University in Des Moines. Schweer served as a volunteer assistant coach for two seasons, helping the program to a pair of National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national championships. In his time there, the program produced 24 national qualifiers, 20 All-Americans and six individual national champions. Grand View also experienced success at the Cliff Keen National Dual championships as the Vikings won it twice. In 2014, the team tied a national point record total with 193 points. He wrestled at North Iowa Area Community College for two seasons helping the 2008 team to a fourth-place finish at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Tournament. In 2009, he helped the program to a second-place finish at the NJCAA National Duals. While wrestling at Grand View, Schweer helped the program to the 2012 NAIA national title and earned the university’s Champion of Character award. During his collegiate career, he was a two-time NJCAA Academic AllAmerican and a NAIA Daktronics Scholar Athlete. He earned his bachelor’s degree in sports management from Grand View in 2012.

Eagles Begin Year Two Of Program With Promise The University of the Ozarks men’s wrestling team will start its second year of existence with more talent and experience under Head Coach Jason Zastrow. In its inaugural season a year ago, the Eagles competed in eight matches with numerous freshmen. This season, the Eagles return four letterwinners and have 15 newcomers. “The guys are excited for a new year,” said Zastrow. “We have a great group of kids. It is still a daily process learning how to fight and go hard every day. But now I have guys that know the process and know what I want. They know what to expect and it has made the transition to year two much easier. This group sees the big picture of what we are trying to build. I like how our guys are growing and coming together as a group.” Zastrow wants to see improvement every day. “If we are getting better every day, we are getting closer to the end goal,” said Zastrow. “I think we are going in the right direction. These are young guys, so it is an adjustment. We have good days and bad days and the key is to fight through those bad days.” Zastrow is emphasizing with his guys making the right choices, on and off the mat. “If every guy learns how to fight, makes the right choices and lives a championship lifestyle, I would be happy at the end of the season,” said Zastrow. “I want them to be the best student and person they can be. If you can do the right things in school and in your personal life, you will become a better wrestler. It all works together. Everything we talk about with wrestling is also applied to life.” Zastrow hopes to build a mentally tough team this season. “You have to be mentally tougher than your opponent,” he said. “There are times when talent will take over, but if you have two guys that are equally talented, the guy that is mentally tougher will win. Ours guys need to fight until the last second. Learning how to do that is a process and it doesn’t happen overnight. You have to be willing to do it every single day.” Ozarks will also host its first wrestling match in school history January 27 against Bacone College.
“It will be really exciting,” said Zastrow. “I think there are a lot of people looking forward to it. It should be a tremendous environment. It will be a good opportunity for people on campus to watch us. I’m hoping we can fill the place up. But we have a lot of work to do before then.” Ozarks will open the year at the Hatcher Duals in Arkadelphia November 7.
