Star is a pretty gray American Bobtail born about July 2010. She landed in a high kill shelter with her kitten, fortunately a volunteer offered to foster them for us and we were able to rescue her. Star is very social, she likes people and gets along well with other cats. She’s very playful, we think the Tailless Cat Rescue vet may have overestimated her age when she was spayed, she acts like she still has a lot of kitten in her. And she’s spunky with that waggly little bobtail! She is vaccinated, vetted, wormed, spayed, microchipped, and is FeLV/FIV and heartworm negative. For more information visit www.taillesscatrescue.com or email taillesscatrescue@hotmail.com, n Harley is a fawn female Pug who is eleven years old. She is very overweight and it is hard for her to get around as she is very small framed. She needs a home that can understand she cannot use her back legs and needs a wheelchair. She’s great with other dogs and is a happy little girl. Harley is up-to-date on routine shots, spayed and heartworm negative. Fostered near High Point, NC. Please put in your application at our website: www.pugrescuenc.org. Please note, Harley’s adoption fee is waived for the perfect family, just asking for a small tax deductible donation.

The Fort Rescue

Say hello to Pluto! He is good with other dogs, cats and absolutely LOVES children!! He is crate-trained and house-trained. Pluto is two years old and he is definitely one of the funniest dogs ever! No, he still hasn’t gotten over the fact that Pluto is no longer a planet. However, he has joined the movement to have it reinstated as one. Pluto really enjoys going on walks, but he is also very laid back and loves to snuggle on the couch with you. He is up-to-date on shots and flea/tick medication.

If you are interested in making Pluto part of your family, contact The Fort at thefortrescue@gmail.com. n

Her family consists of sons, Lance and Brandon and also includes several four-legged members.

Spring Brings “Tick Season”!

S

pring is here and that means it is almost “tick season” around the Triad area! We’ve already seen numerous patients with ticks at our practice within the past month. Ticks are hardy parasites that are always looking for a blood meal, whether it is on your dog, cat or wildlife, such as deer.

provides 100% protection. The companies that manufacture these products, advise consumers that there is usually a 95% efficacy rate. This means that if your pet were to run through the woods and be exposed to 100 ticks, while under the treatment of a flea and tick topical, they would still “pick-up” at least 5 ticks. If you find a tick attached to your pet, simply grasp the head of the tick with tweezers as close to the skin as possible and pull, using a straight out, steady motion. Don’t be concerned about leaving the head in the skin, as this rarely happens. “Squish” the tick inside a tissue, so you don’t touch any fluid that may come from the tick and then flush it down the toilet and wash your hands. Many times after removing an engorged tick, a welt-like bump remains for several weeks. This is known as a tick bite granuloma. If it persists for more than a few weeks or seems painful, let us take a look at the area.

The deer population has grown in the United States over the past few years, and they are a major host for ticks. One deer can support the development of 500,000 new ticks each year!

Most veterinary practices carry a range of quality products that help kill and repel fleas and all stages of deer ticks, brown dog ticks, American dog ticks, and Lone Star ticks. There are various topical products for dogs and cats that are effective and come in easy-to-use applicators. Ensure you use a product labeled for cats, as some dog products are very toxic to cats. The most recent advancements in tick protection for dogs include NexGard and Bravecto, which are oral medications given either once monthly or every three months.

After ticks feed on the blood of deer, they fall onto the ground and some will look for a new meal, while others lay thousands of eggs. Ticks can lie and wait for a passing animal or person, latch on, and immediately begin feeding. Ticks can transmit several dangerous diseases to your pet, including Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Anaplasmosis, Ehrlichiosis, and Cytauxzoonosis. These ticktransmitted diseases have devastating effects on your pet. They could suffer from chronic pain, debilitation, paralysis and in some cases, even death. That being said, there is no reason to panic if you find a tick on your pet. Your pet could potentially be bitten by many ticks during its lifetime and never contract one of these diseases, but that’s no reason to “play the odds”. Prevention is key when it comes to ticks, however no product

Brownie, Adopted

Delivering Hope to Those Who Need it Most The Humane Society of Alamance County offers programs that assist both animals and their human companions. By Leigh Ann Whittle

I

f you step inside the Humane Society of Alamance County’s (HSAC) office in Burlington, you’re bound to quickly see a tiny cream-colored ball of fur bounding toward your feet. That ball of fur gazes at you expectantly with enormous dark eyes and an infectious smile, beckoning you to pet him or throw around a toy. His tail wags wildly as he hops around on three feet. A missing leg doesn’t slow this pup down, nor does it diminish his happiness. This, friends, is what joy looks Felix was decked out for the like. And joy answers to the holidays. He is bouncy, happy name “Brownie.” and full of life. All he needs is a The unofficial HSAC mascot, forever home! Brownie has been part of three of the organization’s five key programs: Emily’s Fund, Rescue/Foster, and Education.

A Four-Decade Mission Formed in the early 1970s, HSAC has always advocated for spay/ neuter. Volunteers once transported animals to spay/neuter clinics outside the county so Alamance County residents could benefit from a low-cost spay/neuter program. Today, HSAC continues to promote spay/neuter services and offers a low-cost program to qualifying individuals and families. Animal advocates know that spaying/neutering can improve an animal’s life, decrease shelter overpopulation, and prevent feral dog and cat colonies from forming. While overpopulation and feral colonies are an ongoing issue in all communities, HSAC has made quite a dent in the local problem: In 2015, it provided more than 700 spay/neuter surgeries, totaling over $37,000 in subsidized operations.

A Source of Rescue Over the years, HSAC has offered foster homes to countless dogs and cats, along with a cat adoption center at the Burlington PetSmart. The 251 animals HSAC placed in 2015 transitioned easily into their

12

April 2016 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails

adoptive homes due to the love, care, basic training, and attention they received in foster care. Attention is worth its weight in gold to an animal who was otherwise unwanted, abandoned, abused, or forced to live on the streets. Just ask Denver and Henry Ford. In early January, this puppy duo roamed the streets of Graham near County Ford. Starving for food and attention, the dogs found salvation from some kind HSAC volunteers who rescued the dogs, fostered them, and sent them to their fur-ever homes. Despite being part of a backyard breeder operation, Abby and Remi were thrilled to greet the HSAC rescuers who found these abandoned pregnant Labradors. The dogs only wanted love and hope, and HSAC provided just that. Sadly, some of Abby and Remi’s puppies died early because the mothers’ bodies were simply too worn out from birthing an estimated 100 to 200 puppies combined in their short lives. Today, Abby, Remi, and their surviving puppies are happy, healthy, and placed in loving homes. Even Brownie can attest to the HSAC Rescue and Foster program’s power. When Brownie’s leg was amputated, he became too fragile for his family to care for him. They surrendered him to HSAC, and HSAC Executive Director Kelly Ronnow fostered him for about a month before she decided Brownie should permanently join her home. Like Abby, Remi, Denver, Henry Ford, and many other animals, Brownie found hope and a bright future.

A Human’s Friend Animals aren’t the only ones who find hope in HSAC. As every pet owner knows, animal catastrophes can be painful to our animals, our hearts, and our wallets. When a pet encounters a serious accident or illness, Alamance County pet owners turn to HSAC for its Emily’s Fund medical assistance program. The grant-

based program has some qualification criteria, but it subsidized more than $13,000 in medical bills for 53 animals last year. For instance, when Brownie’s leg injury required amputation, his family received assistance from Emily’s Fund. Other animals have benefitted from the community’s generous support through donations toward their medical needs. Last Father’s Day, Peanut limped along the shoulder of Interstate 85/40 in Burlington, nursing a broken leg. Several Good Samaritans, including Burlington Animal Services and HSAC, helped Peanut receive the medical attention necessary to repair his leg and place him on a different road – the road to recovery. After placement in foster care, Peanut has fully recovered and is now enjoying his permanent home.

A Hope for the Hungry Not only do financial issues affect pet owners during an animal’s illness or injury, but financial woes also affect daily animal care responsibilities, such as purchasing food. Too often, heartbroken families who can no longer afford pet food are forced to surrender their animals. Through the “No More Empty Bowls” food pantry, stocked through donations by individuals, companies, and organizations, HSAC provides qualifying families with monthly food distributions, keeping people and their animals together. After all, when times are tough, we need the love of our companions.

A Mission to Educate Providing hope for animals and humans doesn’t stop with a few simple acts today; it continues by educating future generations of proper animal ownership and safety. HSAC’s educational programs increase public awareness of animal ownership, covering topics such as general pet care, recommended vaccinations, and animal safety. Whenever Ronnow travels to schools, churches, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and other community groups, Brownie entertains and endears the audience. As a HSAC ambassador, Brownie provides happiness to all he meets, and makes the message more memorable for those involved. HSAC’s work continues beyond its five key programs. It regularly hosts community fundraisers to raise awareness about its work. Its community events, such as Wags, Whiskers, and Wine, Miles4Mutts, and Woofstock, enable Alamance County residents to relax and recreate for a good cause. And providing hope for those who need it most is certainly a good cause. Hope has a face, and that face has big dark eyes, a cold wet nose, and a tongue ready to give kisses. Whether hope walks on four paws or fewer, whether it barks or mews, whether its fur is short or long, hope is in the face of every animal that has benefitted from the Humane Society of Alamance County. Just ask Brownie.

I am an active boy who needs plenty of exercise. I need a home where I can run around the yard and play. Also, I am friendly with cats.

If you think Sweetie would make a good addition to your home, please email us at: arsc2004@gmail.com. n

We believe the last weeks, days, and moments that an owner has with a pet are the most cherished times, and should be handled with dignity and love. By providing veterinary hospice and pet euthanasia services in the home, the human-animal bond is less disturbed, making a much more peaceful closing to a shared bond.

Vet’s Corner Examples of imminent diseases are osteosarcoma (bone cancer) or hemangiosarcoma (usually a tumor on the spleen or heart base). Examples of intermediate diseases are chronic renal failure, lymphoma and nasal tumors. Non-imminent diseases are conditions like arthritis, degenerative muscular diseases and many types of cancer. Often times with imminent diseases, owners that are not yet ready to say goodbye are faced with the possibility of a crisis situation. We often leave emergency pain injections in case that crisis does occur so that the pet will be more comfortable in the time it takes to get to the emergency clinic, regular vet or have the hospice veterinarian return to the home for a peaceful euthanasia. This is also an option for some pets with intermediate and non-imminent conditions, however most cases do well on a new pain-management protocol prescribed by the hospice veterinarian or palliative therapy like subcutaneous fluids. Palliative therapy is specific for the condition. Hospice veterinarians help implement a care plan for your pet, educate clients about pain recognition and treatment, help with supplementary nutrition guidelines, management of incontinence and assist with bandage or wound care. Hospice veterinarians are tasked with helping to determine a pet’s QOL and with finding out what is important to the family. Specifically, we address what concerns the family shares about the end-of-life process, what they are afraid of happening and how they would like to say goodbye. Additionally, we provide support before, during and after the loss of a pet. In Greensboro, Lap of Love began providing a support group for those dealing with end-of-life care issues and pet loss. Our group is called the Pet Life & Loss Support Group of the Piedmont and it is completely free. We are a panel of industry professionals: an end-oflife care veterinarian, an animal chaplain, a grief recovery specialist and bereavement director. This group meets on the first and third Tuesday of every month at 6:30pm. More details are available online on our Meetup site: www.meetup.com/Pet-Life-Loss-Support-Group-of-the-Piedmont or by calling Ron Grillo at 336-686-6806. One of the most important roles of a hospice veterinarian is to help you in evaluating your pet’s QOL. Lap of Love has created a free, interactive scale that weighs the typical factors we use to judge a pet’s QOL - like hunger or mobility - differently according to their condition. You can even upload pictures of your pet and videos that you can later use for comparison. This can be very helpful in many situations as making the decision to euthanize is not a simple one. You can find this free tool online at: www.pethospicejournal.com.

Dr. Sara Fletcher is from Greensboro. She graduated from Page High School in 1995, and received degrees in Animal Science and Zoology from North Carolina State in 1999. She graduated with the class of 2003 at the North Carolina State College of Veterinary Medicine. Her first nine years of practice were spent in emergency medicine. She has been practicing mobile end-of-life care with Lap of Love Veterinary Hospice & In-Home Euthanasia since 2012. She lives in downtown Greensboro with her husband Jeremy, their daughter Millie, two dogs Buster Brown and Bearey, Sara Fletcher, DVM plus two cats Tulip & Violet.

VETERINARY HOSPICE: Caring Beyond A Cure

Veterinary Hospice is a family centered, medically supervised, team oriented service dedicated to preserving the Human-Animal Bond (HAB) by maintaining comfort and Quality of Life (QOL) for the terminally ill or chronically ill patient until the patient passes away unassisted or the family elects peaceful euthanasia, usually performed in the home. This specific type of veterinary care focuses on the comfort of your pet, not on curing the disease. Hospice is not about prolonging suffering or increasing medical expenses. It is about caring beyond a cure.

Veterinary Hospice is not a place where you take your pet and leave them, the only place involved is the comfort of their own home surrounded by what and whom they love. Hospice is not Anti-Euthanasia, it is Pro-Quality of Life. Hospice veterinarians follow a medical model similar to human hospice; the primary difference is our ability to end the suffering of our animals when the time is appropriate. An in-home veterinary hospice visit provides the family with the tools and support needed to navigate end-of-life care. This usually occurs after the family’s veterinarian reaches a diagnosis, options are discussed and nothing more will be done. However there is something more that can be done by a hospice veterinarian; caring beyond a cure - keeping your baby comfortable until the time is right to say goodbye. Veterinary hospice is not geared towards treating or curing a disease, it is about managing the symptoms and providing comfort. One of the most important things a hospice veterinarian does is the in-home observation and exam. We spend about an hour observing and learning about your pet and discussing behavior, changes or other issues that you may face in the end stage of life. This consult includes advice, tips and resources to help maintain a better quality of life for your friend and the rest of your family. We will assist you in implementing a plan that will meet your pet’s needs and respect your family’s wishes. Because we are in the pet’s most comfortable environment, we can observe them while they are completely at ease. We may be able to point out small things, like a pet’s hesitation to drink water on a slippery tile floor, and help you make necessary changes to ensure your pet stays hydrated. Hospice veterinarians provide education about the condition your pet has been diagnosed with, and how this disease process will progress, and what the early, advanced and end-stages will look like. Most end-of-life diseases can be classified as imminent (critical stages or a crisis may occur at any moment), intermediate (transitioning to end-oflife stages), or non-imminent (end-of-life is somewhat distant in the future).

Joss is a short and stocky girl (60 pounds and strong!), estimated to be around 3-5 years of age. She enjoys cuddling, walks, and belly rubs galore! When she’s really happy, she lets you know by making the cutest snorts you’ve ever heard! She does well with medium sized dogs or larger, but finds smaller animals (toy breeds, cats, birds, etc.) to be a little too much for her and would do best in a home without such distractions. She is crate and house-trained.

Laci is a darling 5 pound long-haired Chihuahua and possibly Papillon mix who loves to soak up affection and sun, and roll in the grass. She is people-oriented and wants to be your constant companion. Laci is missing a portion of her rear right leg, but it does not impact her ability to run and play and she does not seem to notice that she is a tripod. She is very quick and loves to race around the yard, so we are requiring a home with a fenced yard. Laci is 1 year old, spayed, current on all shots and microchipped.

ANIMAL RESCUE & FOSTER PROGRAM 336.574.9600 / www.arfpnc.com

Meet Dixie. She is an uber sweet 2-3 year old Terrier/Border Collie mix who came to ARFP with four babies who have all now been adopted. Dixie loves to run and play and would prefer to have a fenced yard in her forever home. She loves everyone she meets and has even done some pet therapy at a local nursing home. To find out more call ARFP at 336-574-9600. n

Niko.

Joni's

middle name is PLAY. She loves to chase balls and loves small fuzzy toys. She will get the small toys in her mouth and talk to them. One of Joni’s best traits is that she is a great cuddler. Speaking of talking, her purr is as smooth as her namesake, Joni Mitchell. Joni has been a delightful foster kitten in her foster home. She gets along well with the other cats and dogs and is, for the most part, a team player. Joni was born on 6/18/15 and has been spayed, vaccinated, and is negative for feline diseases. Joni was rescued from a local shelter where she was abandoned. She was very sick when she came to us but is now a thriving kitten. Call ARFP at 336-574-9600 for more information. n

Monet.

Born February 2013, this handsome man has lived a rough life. He was born into a hoarding situation where he was banned to backyard living. Thanks to animal control and area rescue groups, Niko was given a second chance at the good life. Niko, weighing 7.8 pounds, has now been neutered, is up-to-date on his shots, and only steps outside for potty and play time. Niko gets along with all animals, and prefers to be in the lap of any human that he encounters!

Are you ready to play? Monet is! You might not be able to tell it just from looking, but I’m a world class toy catcher. Top ranked in both catching toys thrown over my head and the game of fetch, I’m getting ready to go pro! And that doesn’t even begin to cover my skills in tail-chasing. That’s a tough one, I tell you. But, if you want to be great, you have to work at it. And I work so hard that when the training day’s over, I fall asleep in the nearest lap. Those post workout massages get me every time. I’ve been training since April 2015. I don’t use performance enhancing substances, but I am current on all my vaccines and have been neutered (they say it reduces my drag coefficient).

Rosie

is a 10 month old spayed female pot bellied pig who came to us from Solutions for Animals, another rescue group. They took her in when her original owner could no longer care for her. Rosie was raised as an indoor pig but is now happily living the outdoor farm life that pigs need. She is very sweet and social. If you are interested in adopting Rosie, please visit our website, www.reddogfarm.com. n

Fern

was found as a stray. She is your typical rabbit. She is very sweet and social, loves to play and explore new things. She loves to lay on her side and stick her feet out of her cage. She doesn’t mind being picked up or petted, and loves kids too. Her favorite toy is a paper grocery bag! If you are interested in adopting Fern, please complete the adoption application at www.reddogfarm.com. n

Piper may be an older gal, but she still has plenty of love to give. She has wonderful manners and is a sweetheart. She loves other dogs, cats, and all people! If you are interested in this pretty girl, please fill out an application at www.reddogfarm.com. n

Marley

is such a great guy, but is simply inconsistent under saddle. One day he is perfect, and the next day he is quite spooky. Marley would make a really fun project for someone interested in Natural Horsemanship as he is sweet and very willing, but has a spooky side as well. He would also be a great companion horse or lead line horse for kids as he has had a ton of love and training. He is SUCH a handsome guy and loves attention – he’d also make a gorgeous pasture ornament! If you are interested in meeting Marley, please visit our website, www.reddogfarm.com. n

Penelope

came to us after being abandoned by her owner. Someone found her and realized she was pregnant and about to give birth. She came into our program right after giving birth to her 4 kittens. She is a total purr machine and loves to be loved on. She’s a fantastic mama and doesn’t mind us humans giving her a helping hand with her babies. She will need to be with her kittens for a few more weeks before they can be separated. Visit www.reddogfarm.com to apply to adopt Penelope. n

Trixie

is 9 years young! This girl loves to go places and is social with people and kids. She is an all-around great girl. Trixie came to us after being left at a local shelter and needed some extra help to find her forever family. She is a typical hound dog, her nose drives quite a bit of her day-to-day activities. As long as there is no cat around, Trixie is all for lots of love, affection, and adoration from her humans. She doesn’t mind other dogs! Visit www.reddogfarm.com for more information. n

Beau.

One blue eye, one brown. And all about the snuggles. We found Beau in the shelter the day he came in as a stray wearing his new bright red collar. We couldn’t believe no one came to look for him and went back to get Beau when no one else did. He is sweet and playful, does great with other dogs and doesn’t mind the cats. He is going to be a big boy (Blue Heeler and Bernese Mountain dog). His foster parents say he’s been a mellow, polite puppy - he restricts his chewHaley Graves Foundation ing to his toys only. But he also has a fun, goofy personality. Most of all, they say this sweet boy is all about the snuggles. Beau’s adoption fee is $200. SPCA OF THE TRIAD 336.375.3222 / www.triadspca.org

Ashley

is a beautiful 8 year old Tortoiseshell kitty that came to the SPCA when her humans had a baby who was severely allergic. She is quiet and shy among other kitties and tends to keep to herself, but when she is with people she comes out of her shell. At that point Ashley becomes curious and loving. Ashley likes children and doesn’t seem to mind dogs or other cats. She also loves to play, especially with string and laser lights, and she loves to get head rubs and lots of petting too. She is spayed, up-to-date on vaccines and microchipped. If you think you have the loving home where Ashley would fit perfectly, then contact SPCA of the Triad at 375-3222 and see how you can make her a part of your family! n

Speedy

(AKA Mr. Toes) got this nickname because he is a solid black cat except for the cute little white toes on his back feet. He was originally adopted from the SPCA but his owner developed a cat allergy and had to surrender him back to us. Speedy is a handsome cat and a true gentleman. You never find him being rowdy or picking fights with the other cats or kittens. He loves to find a cozy spot to nap the afternoon away, but he’s always there to greet you when you pass by and say hello. Speedy loves attention and always accepts loving head rubs. He’s a super-sweet cat that would make a great addition to any home! If you think you can give Speedy a second chance at a loving, furever home please contact the SPCA of the Triad at 375-3222. n

Lady

is a beautiful 2-year-old female Boxer mix that loves to go on walks and is a great trail hiker. She is very smart and loves to play. Lady has a very sweet temperament but she can be somewhat selective in getting along with other dogs. It just depends on the dog. When she finds the right match she plays for hours on end! Also, Lady does not care for cats, so a home with a cat is not a match for sweet Lady. Lady needs a structured home with a routine and her adoption does require a fenced-in yard for exercise and playtime. We also require a 2 week trial placement before adoption. Such a great dog, all Lady needs is her forever human. Contact the SPCA of the Triad at 375-3222 and see about meeting this wonderful girl. n

Julianne

is super sweet and affectionate. She is a solid black, one-yearold kitty that has been spayed, is up-to-date on vaccines, microchipped and ready to find her forever home. Julianne is a great fit for almost any family because she is laid back, loving and affectionate, but also curious and playful. She does well with other cats and would be a great snuggle buddy. Julianne loves petting and will return the favor with love and a soft purr. All she desires is a home and a person to call her own. If you think Julianne is the one for you, then contact the SPCA of the Triad at 375-3222 to see how to meet this sweet little girl! n

Indigo

is a Lab/Chow mix who is about three years old. She is spayed, up-to-date on vaccines and microchipped. She arrived at the SPCA with her sister, Velvet, because their owner was moving and could not take the two of them along. Quiet and shy, Indigo is just starting to explore her new world and blossom. All she needs now is someone patient and kind who will help her learn to trust. Once she does that, her confidence will begin to grow and she will come out of her shell. Indigo is a sweet, playful and gentle dog that just needs someone who can give her a little love and attention. Come out and meet Indigo today and see if she could be the best thing that ever happened to you. Call SPCA of the Triad at 375-3222 for more information. n

Peyton

is an 8-yearold Lab/Shepherd mix that is spayed, up-to-date on vaccines and microchipped. She is such a sweet dog and is often overlooked by potential adopters. What they are missing is a true gem! She has such a playful and goofy side but she also likes to go on walks and loves petting and human attention. Payton would fit into a lot of homes as long as she didn’t have to share her new place with a cat. Cats are just not Payton’s thing. Payton is a wonderful dog who would make a great couch potato, bed warmer, confidant and secret keeper and all around best friend. Once you meet her you will wonder how you have lived without her! Call SPCA of the Triad at 375-3222 for more information. n

Birdie. Wouldn’t you love to have a good ol’ hound dog? Meet Birdie! This great dog is about 2-½ years old and about 52 pounds. She is very good with other dogs and with cats too. Out in the yard or inside with you, this is one friendly, happy dog. Juliet’s House Rescue

Socks was found as a stray, heartworm positive, emaciated and homeless. A kind veterinarian and her family took him in, helped him get well, and kept him until a foster or forever home could be found. Socks is about 5 years old and is now happily settled in with his foster family which includes fur siblings and a child. He is very smart, and loves to go places and meet people! He walks decently on a leash, and we are working on making him an expert. Socks loves people, and wants to hang out with you all the time. He is now healthier than ever and can’t wait to get belly

Dog Poop: More Than Just a Nuisance by Susan Gelatka – President, Doodie Free Zone

D

og Poop - more than just a nuisance…You hate to see it and you hate to step in it, but, if you have a dog you need to pick it up and here are a few undisputable reasons why. Obviously there is the fact that it’s poop, I mean really, if your dog could talk, he’d probably ask you to help him out and clean up that stinky mess. Then, there’s the real health issue for you and your dog because there’s a lot of crap in that poop. What kind you ask? Let’s learn a little more….. Dog poop is a significant contributing factor to the spread of diseases, bacteria, and protozoa such as Roundworm, Tapeworm, Salmonellosis, Giardia, and E. Coli, just to name a few. Kids run the greatest risk of illness from these because they’re prone to play in the grass or dirt then put their hands in their mouths or rub their eyes. Even just unknowingly stepping in the dog poop and then walking into your home will track in potential parasites and bacteria where it will contaminate your

carpet and floors, and those who come in contact with them. Parasitic infections can make humans extremely sick, and for pregnant women - can pose a serious harm to their unborn child. Many people think that dog poop “just goes away”. Not so! If the poop is not picked up it will break down but still lay in the ground for years. Now, when it rains, and the ground gets saturated, the bacteria and parasites will run off into the storm drains which run into the rivers and streams and eventually, our drinking water. Pet poop has been considered responsible for almost one fourth of the fecal contamination of the waterways -those very same waterways from which we get our drinking water. A lot of dog parents simply do not have the time in their busy days to schedule regular dog poop clean-up, or maybe they simply cannot stomach this most dreaded chore. This is where the professional service known as a “Pooper Scooper service” will make your life a lot easier healthier and cleaner. This affordable weekly or twice weekly clean-up service will assure that your yard is a clean and healthy environment for you, your family and your bff, that’s Best Furry Friend. www.triadhappytails.com April 2016

Little Miss Fancy Pants

Hi! My name is Fancy! My foster mom calls me Miss Fancy Pants because I’m cute, funny, playful and well... pretty darn sweet! I’m house-trained, crate-trained and good with other dogs. I know basic commands, do very well on a leash and ride great in the car. I’m fine to lay on the couch by myself but I REALLY love to cuddle. I like all people that I meet, especially the real little people. They are closer to my level and I can love on them better! I haven’t had many toys to play with until now so I’m learning how to enjoy life and have fun! Contact the Humane Society of Alamance County at 336-438-2023 or email hsacinfo@gmail.com if you’d like to meet me. I know you’ll simply LOVE me!

Minnie.

Felix,

If you’re looking for a spunky gal to call your own, Minnie is the dog for you! She is very food motivated and loves long walks, balls and snuggles. She takes direction well and wants nothing more than to please her people. Minnie is not good with other animals and would do best as your only love bug. She is very sweet and very smart. Minnie is a relaxed girl when not overstimulated. She crates beautifully with not even a whimper. She is very gentle taking treats, loves to chew on bones and gives kisses. Minnie is currently in foster care where she receives lots of love and attention. She is spayed, up-to-date on vaccines and microchipped!

affectionately called ‘Big Head’, is a 3 year old, housetrained Pit Bull/Mastiff mix. Felix is currently recovering from knee surgery but that doesn’t slow him down at all! He thinks he is a lap dog and loves to lounge on the couch with his people. Felix is a very strong boy who forgets how big he is and can sometimes get a little over-excited; therefore, a home without small children would probably be best. He would absolutely love to have a doggy companion as he loves to play with his canine foster siblings. Felix would also love to have a sturdy fenced-in yard to run around and play in! This boy is waiting for a forever family of his very own to love and cherish. Adopt him today!

Sonny.

is a sweet girl nicknamed Miss Piggy! Yes, she snorts like a pig. She is very cute and is good with other dogs after a proper introduction. In her foster home, she lives with 5 other dogs and in fact needs to be in a home with canine companions. She is good with all people and listens to redirection, learning new things quickly. She is a great leash walker and is also off-leash trained. She naps most of the day away but is always game for a good hike. She is completely house-trained but does not do well in crates and if left alone, she gets a little anxious. She is a great dog and if her foster mom didn’t have a house full, she’d probably keep her! Photo courtesy of Laurie Merritt Photography!

I am very shy and wary until I get to know you, so give me time in a safe place, like my crate, to settle into my surroundings. Once I get used to my new home, you will find out how sweet I am. My foster mom enjoys lifting me onto her lap and snuggling with me and I don’t mind! I love to play with toys on a string, but my favorite thing is a canvas shopping bag. I like to play with the straps, and crawl inside. You will often see me use my front feet as if I am sharpening my claws, but don’t worry about anything because I am declawed. If you come home and can’t find me anywhere, just look under a blanket - it is my favorite place to snuggle!

Mitzi loves to be petted and brushed (especially under her chin) and responds very well to her full name “Mitzi Roo”! Although she doesn’t like being picked up or having her belly touched, she does like to be right next to her people and will come running up to her foster mom to get attention and love. She does love to eat and prefers her hard food. Mitzi is still spunky for her 9 year old self, loves to chase the cat streamer and plays well with her youngest feline foster sibling! Training Your Pet

Dog Massage and the Benefits for Your Pet!

by Linda Hofmann, Mt. Tabor Boarding & Grooming

Training your dog to accept and enjoy massage yields many benefits

L

ike humans, dogs have feelings of pain, fear, loneliness, stress, confusion and love. Their feelings like ours, are based on what they have experienced earlier in their lives and memories of previous events. Touch is a powerful transmission of love, security, happiness and healthiness for dogs and people. Dr. Michael W. Fox, a renowned veterinarian and author of a national syndicated newspaper column, “Animal Doctor”, expressed the importance of massage with a quote, “Massage has so many physical benefits for your dog that you can almost call it an essential of healthcare, like grooming, feeding and exercise.” The benefits of dog massage are the same as the benefits to humans. Massage reduces swelling and decreases muscle spasms and tension. It can also increase muscle tone, reduce healing time after an injury and help to reduce excessive scar tissue formation. Massage can also help with behavioral problems like anxiety and stress by relaxing the nervous system and releasing endorphins to improve positive emotions and overall wellbeing. Dog massage can be a gentle rubbing by their owners or a thorough treatment by a trained canine massage therapist. Always consult your veterinarian before conducting canine massage yourself, this will ensure your pet does not have any existing physical issues that could be aggravated or worsened by massage, such as cancer, recent fractures or certain skin conditions. Puppies to Senior Dogs Benefit from Massage Puppies - Receiving massage between 8-12 weeks show more love and trust plus are easier to train. Adults - Receiving massage reduces stress, improves muscle tone and circulation and enhances positive mood and emotions. Seniors - Receiving massage reduces pain in stiff joints, improves flexibility, digestion and sleep patterns. A General Dog Massage This typically begins with long petting strokes from head to toe. Allow the dog to lay comfortably on a padded surface

lying upright until she begins to accept and encourages you to continue. Once she relaxes gently pull and massage ears from base to tip, continuing onto head, neck and chin muscles in a circular motion with fingertips. Continue onto each leg from shoulders to toes and hips to toes. Finish massage by massaging tail from base to tip. There are many resources to learn more about canine massage from personal pet massage to courses for becoming a trained canine massage therapist. Fox - Dog Massage a Whiskers to Tail Guide to Your Dog’s Ultimate Petting Experience by Mary Jean Ballner - Training in Animal Massage by Northwest School of Animal Massage - NWSAM.com Canine massage has many benefits that can improve your pet’s overall health and wellness. Massage should be a part of the essential care you provide for your cherished canine friend. Linda Hofmann, has been the owner of Mt. Tabor Boarding & Grooming for over 15 years. She is a Veterinary Medical Technologist, Pet Stylist for dogs and cat and lover of all animals. She recently completed a continuing education course for Canine Massage at the Atlanta Pet Fair and Conference.

ake a look at all the sweet faces in this publication, and you’re bound to ask: “How can I help?” There are many ways to help animal shelters and rescues save an animal’s life, but one of the most enjoyable and rewarding ways is to foster a dog or cat in your home. Fostering literally saves lives because it creates an open spot at a shelter or rescue. Sadly, our animal shelters are bursting at the seams due to the influx of litters of puppies and kittens, the offspring of dogs and cats who have not been spayed or neutered. Rescues desperately try to help with the overflow, and most rely on foster homes to house the animals they rescue. Fostering for either a shelter or a rescue is a winwin situation for both foster home and foster animal. Some folks foster because they love dogs or cats, and it’s an easy way to share that love with multiple animals. Fostering as a family gives children the opportunity to learn how to care for an animal, and introduces them to the responsibility that goes along with it. If you’re interested in dog ownership and don’t know which breed would be best for you, foster for a breed-specific rescues and find out! If you’re a retired person, fostering an animal can provide companionship , exercise (particularly with a dog) and interaction with others. Even elderly folks can foster an older, more laid-back dog or cat, again providing companionship, a sense of accomplishment and that all-important empty spot for another needy animal. “What’s so special about foster homes?” All animals benefit from being in a home as opposed to a shelter. Animal shelters often need foster homes for litters of puppies or kittens to protect their developing immune systems. Sometimes a litter comes in without the mother, so the foster home gives round-the-clock care that the mother would normally provide. These youngsters also gain the socialization that prepares them to be a family’s cherished pet. Adult dogs and cats learn how to be part of a family, and benefit from training in basic house manners, which is impossible in the shelter environment. Imagine the shock of

a senior dog or cat entering a shelter when Baby AND older animals all they’ve need fosters! known is a loving home with an owner now deceased. What a mercy a foster home would be for that dog or cat! “So what’s involved with fostering?” Most rescues pay for all vetting, flea and tick medicine, and heartworm prevention, many shelters do the same. The Guilford County Animal Shelter, for example, provides their foster homes with vetting, medicines, guidance, and support. Some shelters or rescues ask their foster homes to publicize the animal or find it a permanent home, while some have a website to promote their animals and adoption coordinators to process applications. Take a look at the shelter or rescue websites in this publication and you’ll find that all are desperate for foster homes and outline the details. “But I can’t foster because I’d get too attached to my dog/cat and want to keep it.” So how do seasoned foster parents take an animal in time after time, love and nurture it, and then watch it walk away with someone else? Some say they have a mindset that the animal isn’t there to stay, but is merely on a stopover on the way to their forever home. Some focus on how happy the animal will be in their forever home. Others realize that there’s a limit to the number of animals they can have, and reaching that limit means they must say “no” to fostering and saving another life. So would you like the satisfaction of having a dog or cat but not the expense? Could you find a nook or cranny in your heart and home to accommodate a needy animal? If so, you would be giving an animal the gift of life, and a shelter or rescue the opportunity to help one more. Even if you can’t foster, spread the word to friends and family that they can make a difference by fostering. photo co urtesy

Carmelo.

Meet Carmelo! If you’re looking for a strikingly handsome, affectionate, sweet guy who’s never met a stranger, then Melo is your man! This incredible boy loves belly rubs, cuddling up next to his people, and chasing his laser pointer. He is looking for a family who will have patience to work with him, and to love and encourage him. While he loves all Blue Ridge Boxer Rescue people, Carmelo would probably do best in an only dog household, where he can soak up your attention and repay you with a lifetime of laughs and love. If you think Carmelo would make a great addition to your family, visit www.blueridgeboxerrescue.com to learn how to adopt! n

Third Grade Class Teaching Valuable Lessons

Cupcakes always have

Nestled in a quiet neighborhood in Winston-Salem is a very special place. Our magazine had received an invitation to come and speak with Ms. Carie McCarthy’s third grade class about our publication and responsible pet ownership. We had gladly accepted their gracious invitation, and a couple of weeks later, I proceeded to pull up in front of their school. Like most schools these days, there is a main structure and scattered about on the grounds clusters of mobile classrooms. This situation is prevalent all over the Triad, an indicator that need for space has outpaced our ability to supply new classrooms. At first I felt a little sad that the kids attended classes in these spaces, but once inside, my concerns disappeared. Upon entering Ms. McCarthy’s classroom, 21 beaming faces turned my way, and immediately told me these young people were happy to be where they were and with the staff at HallWoodward Elementary School. Ms. McCarthy, her teaching assistant, Ms. Bloom, the Principal, Mrs.Tribby and the Assistant Principal, Ms. Linville were all there to greet me and welcome me to their school. The third graders had been using our magazine to practice their reading skills and other school assignments - most kids love animals and enjoy the stories and photos. Plus, they were

learning about the importance of properly caring for pets and when pets are right for a family and when they are not. Many pets are given at holidays and special events in family life, but sometimes it’s just not a good fit. Ms. McCarthy so graciously commented, “I am so happy you were able to see the joy your publication brings to our class. We use it for informational and persuasive writing. They love ‘adopting animals’ and making plans for the types of pets they will have as adults. Many of our students can only dream of having a guinea pig or potbelly pig and your magazine helps them make plans for the future. Also, it has debunked many myths students have about certain animals, most notably cats. At the beginning of the year, students will often tell me they don’t like cats because they’re mean. After being exposed to articles about cats, the next thing you know they are ‘adopting cats’. The pictures and writing I sent you involved students taking their knowledge and compassion for animals to the next level because they now know enough about the responsibility it takes to care for a forever friend.” Anyway, I wanted to make a good impression, so brought along the cupcakes just in case. Most bumbling presentations can be saved through the use of sweets, so had my backup plan in place. The class gathered around me as I settled into a chair and they

began to ask questions they had prepared. These were well thought-out questions about animals and their care, plus some I had not expected. One girl asked who was my best friend, so I replied my cat, Sparky and my business partner, Jennifer. Another student asked the very mature and thoughtful question of how we “made” our magazine. After our session, I broke out the cupcakes. Everyone settled down and enjoyed the sweet treat (sorry about the sugar rush Ms. McCarthy) and reluctantly I said, “Good-bye” to the class. I came to the school hoping to give something to the class, but I got far more back from this class. I hope the kids had as much fun as I did!

ONE GOOD TURN

by James Colasanti, Jr.

Miracles happen every day and in every way to all kinds of people, yet most go unobserved. Those people who do not believe in miracles have actually experienced many such occurrences: they simply lack the presence of mind to realize what is transpiring. The miracles are simply viewed as an eddy in the ebb and flow of time.
