ON THE COVER: Mickey and his mother (since adopted) were dumped and suffered from severe mange and neglect. He is shy, and takes a little longer to trust someone new, but is incredibly sweet once he feels safe. He loves to snuggle but is also content to lay beside you and chew on an antler. He much prefers a life of lounging on the sofa over traveling and seeing new places. Mickey would benefit best in a home with a confident dog to help show him the ropes. Under two years old, good with kids, cats and other dogs. All vetting is up-to-date. Microchipped and neutered. Visit www.ruffloverescue.com/adopt to adopt Mickey!

Dr. Christine E. Hunt received her B.S. in Zoology from N.C. State University, cum laude, followed by her veterinary doctorate from Oklahoma State University. ats are great at hiding signs of illness and Brutus is a prime example of how subtle geriatric diseases can have a great impact on the aging cat’s quality of life. Supercat, Brutus has been an extremely athletic rodent manager for his family farm. Until this year, he has been faster than a speeding rabbit and able to leap tall bushes in a single bound. All of his previous annual exams and blood work have been normal. Now at 11 years of age (64 in human years), Brutus has recently exhibited signs of arthritic pain such as decreased activity and leaping skills. Radiographs revealed advanced arthritis in his spine and elbows. Short term pain management and feline specific NSAIDS were prescribed, but Stem cell therapy was the best option for Brutus’s restoration to normal activities. However, his pre-stem cell diagnostics revealed several new medical issues. He had weight loss, a palpable thyroid nodule with abnormal blood work that suggested hyperthyroid disease and a low potassium level. Before he can proceed with his Stem cell therapy, Brutus needs his underlying medical issues resolved. Additionally, one of Brutus’s upper fangs was slightly longer than the opposing tooth and had increased mobility. This condition is called a super eruption and is indicative of dental disease with infection below the gum line. It is also unusual for a cat with normal renal function who eats a high quality, balanced diet to have a low potassium level. In cats, adrenal gland tumors can produce too much Aldosterone which in turn causes low potassium levels. An abdominal ultrasound showed normal adrenal glands and no other organ abnormalities, but a benign thyroid nodule was confirmed in his neck. A small percentage of cats can have microscopic Aldosterone secreting cells in their adrenal glands that don’t show up on routine ultrasounds. Cats with

this condition need daily potassium supplements to maintain normal electrolyte levels. Brutus’s current treatment plan will include testing Aldosterone levels, presurgical antibiotics with extraction of his infected fang and Radioactive I-31 Therapy which will selectively destroy his over productive thyroid nodule. Once Brutus has stabilized and returned to his normal body weight, his umbilical fat will be surgically collected. Topper

Project Pearl

2-year old Topper is ready to shine in his new home. Topper is a lovely little dog that enjoys walks and cuddling on the couch. A former medical foster who was adopted in 2017, he was returned to our program this summer after his mom lost her battle to cancer. Topper currently lives with other dogs and cats and would be terrific as a family dog. Full of character and personality, this nub-tailed, 20-pound mix breed looks forward to finding his forever home.

by Carol Moeser

uff Love Rescue is a no-kill, 501(c)3 Non-Profit Organization and is a licensed Department of NC Agriculture private animal shelter. Founded by Sue Rogers in 1999, Ruff Love Rescue is completely funded by donations and run entirely by volunteers. Ruff Love saves the dogs no one else will —the severely injured, sick, elderly, starved and neglected dogs that have no other chance. We get calls, emails and messages every day asking for help, and it never stops because there is always another life to save. Ruff Love makes a special effort to rescue black dogs that would otherwise be overlooked. Black dogs are the victims of “black dog syndrome”— they are the last to be adopted and often the first to be euthanized at shelters. Black dogs don’t photograph as well as lighter colored dogs in poorly lit shelters, superstitions about black animals still exist, and the human eye is drawn to lighter colors. Regardless, a dog’s coat color has nothing to do with his or her personality, and black dogs are just as playful, loving and loyal as any other dog! Ruff Love loves black dogs, and we try to educate our potential adopters on the myths surrounding them. Mickey (on the cover), is shy but very sweet, and he would love to find his forever home! Our cat division, Feline Friends of Ruff Love Rescue, focuses on finding forever homes for current fosters and helping control overpopulation by spaying/neutering. They have saved many cats that no one else would but have to turn down so many A dog’s color has more because “kitten season” nothing to do with his/her personality. lasts all year. Foster homes are Black dogs are just desperately needed! as playful, sweet, Pet overpopulation is a huge loving and loyal as problem in our community, any other dog ! and far too many animals are euthanized every year in shelters. Spay/neuter is the only solution: we can’t rescue,

adopt or foster our way out of it! To help alleviate the problem, Ruff Love has partnered with Davidson County Animal Alliance to create “Spay Neuter Instead of Pregnancy in Davidson County.” SNIP-DC offers low cost spay/neuter services to Davidson Co. residents only for $20 per pet; SNIP-DC covers the rest of the cost. Launched in January, SNIP-DC has sponsored 314 spay/ neuters through June 30; at an average five per litter, this is 1,570 less animals born in an already overpopulated area. Donations are needed to continue and expand this much needed program!

All photos courtesy of Laurie Merritt Photography Ruff Love Rescue has grown so much in 19 years! We always need more foster homes—please consider opening your home to a pet in need. Volunteers are needed as well. Financial support is our biggest need; vet bills are our largest operating expense. Our dogs and cats are spayed/neutered and fully vetted, and we take in many medical emergencies and hospice cases. Please consider donating today; your donation is tax-deductible under IRS rules.

Training Your Pet

THE JUMPING DOG! By Kaitlyn Jones, Certified Trainer, Handler

W

hy does my dog jump up? The question I get most often is about jumping on people, furniture and car doors, or counter surfing, the list is a long one. Jumping on people can give a dog a bad name. It seems there’s nothing worse than a hyper, jumping dog. Dogs often enter into a state of hyper-emotionality after they have been separated from their human pack, anticipating a journey, or returning to the “den” (your home) or meeting new human/pack members. All of these are jumping triggers for our fine domesticated friends. Dogs have a low ceiling of visibility. Ever see a dog chase a flying disc only to run right under it if the disc catches the wind and rises? Dogs jump to get a human vantage point and increase that ceiling of visibility, smart doggie! Some dogs jump to be dominate, hmm, bad doggie! To retrain or properly train your dog to not jump try these:

So don’t share affection with a dog unless he’s got “four on the floor”! Ignore your dog when he’s in a hyper state and only show affection or attention when your dog is calm.

The Bark & Fly Ranch opened in the early 1990’s as a canine disc club, and has morphed into an all around dog wonderland with many services and features.

• Use the sit command. Praise only when dog is in a sit-stay, scratch under chin and pet from head toward tail. This will train your dog to sit for greeting and look upward from that position to increase visibility ceiling. • Be consistent! Never allow your dog to be on your physical person, always redirect to sit or standing. Off is the correction, sit or four on the floor is the redirection, followed by praise only when the dog is not jumping. • Don’t allow puppies to jump on you. This is setting a conditioning precedent, actually teaching a dog at a young age to jump on people. • Don’t allow your dog to jump on friends or relatives! This can be tough because you say “off ” and granddad says “it’s OK, I love my little buddy”! Problem here is the next one your dog jumps on can be a child or elderly person who can be injured easily, though not intentionally. In the dog’s mind, he thinks hey jump on ‘em like grandpa, get some affection… see my point!

Arthur

Dudley

is laid-back and easy like Sunday morning! Though he is only around 2 years old, he has the look of an old soul. He isn’t loud, or over-exuberant, and won’t jump on you when he comes out of his kennel. Arthur doesn’t show a lot of interest in toys or running around, and just likes to be loved on and to hang out with you. We think Arthur would make an excellent companion for someone who would like a TV-watching buddy, a garage or workshop companion or a co-pilot to help run short errands. Arthur is neutered, current on all vaccines and ready to become your sidekick.

is a very friendly boy with a big, happy personality. He is about three years old and came in as a stray back in May. He can appear a little wild and excited at first glance, but he really isn’t. Volunteers have worked with him and once he runs around and settles down, he is a great dog! He truly wants to please. Dudley knows basic commands and is very food motivated. He is smart and picks up concepts quickly. Dudley tested positive for heartworms but don’t let that keep you from adopting him—it’s very treatable.

Ruger is 9 years young and is

little shy. She is three years old and hasn’t had an easy life. Before she came to BAS, she was hooked to a heavy logging chain. Now Audrey is learning how to be a happy girl and loves running around the play yard and being free when volunteers take her outside. Our wish is for Audrey to be adopted by a loving and caring family that will include her in their daily life and love her the way she deserves to be loved. She is spayed, current on vaccines and ready for a happily-ever-after ending to her story.

such a sweet, gentle older guy. He came to us as a stray and with a little TLC, he will be the most wonderful friend. Being a senior, Ruger is pretty laid back and he won’t care much about chewing your things, chasing and fetching a ball, or demanding a lot of your attention. In fact, he will be happy simply being with you. Ruger has many good years ahead of him and simply needs a second chance at love and happiness.

Doby

is a 4 year old boy who has been waiting since early May for his special person to adopt him and that is much too long! Doby is a nice boy who just wants to be with people and be loved. If you’re sitting on a chair or sofa, he will gladly help himself to sharing it with you. He enjoys going in our play room and picking out his own toys to play with. If it’s a squeaky toy, he will be sure to make it squeak-less! Doby can act like a fool in his kennel, but once he comes out, he is a happy camper. Shenandoah is a pretty 8 year old brown tabby girl who would love nothing more than a new loving family and home. Due to health problems, her last owner could no longer care for her. This little girl is very friendly and affectionate! She especially loves being brushed and petted. Shenandoah also seems to enjoy climbing and exploring her surroundings and would probably love some sunny windows to take some long sun baths. She is spayed, fully vaccinated and ready to meet you at Burlington Animal Services, 221 Stone Quarry Rd., Burlington or call 336-578-0343 for more information. n

Willie is a handsome grey and white Manx mix boy born around October 2015. He originally had a home, but when his humans had a baby, the cats were abandoned. Willie loves to be petted around his head and neck. He loves to play and is just happy lounging near a person. However, he does Tailless Cat Rescue not like other cats or dogs and would like to be the only pet in a home. He is neutered, up-to-date on vaccinations, has been wormed and treated for fleas, microchipped, and tested FeLV/FIV and heartworm negative. For more information about him visit www.taillesscatrescue.com or email taillesscatrescue@hotmail.com. n

Jackson is a male Beagle, estimated date of birth to be 2010. He came to us as a stray. He is a very sweet boy and loves everyone! He must have had a previous home with children because he loves kids! He Spay Stokes does best with larger female dogs, no small or male dogs. He is neutered, heartworm negative and on monthly prevention, up-to-date on all vaccinations, microchipped and on monthly Nexgard. A home with a fenced yard is preferable, but will consider a home without, if someone works from home. If you would like more information on Jackson, please email us at arsc2004@gmail.com. His adoption fee is $125.00. n

Monarch. **Adoption fee partially sponsored** Born approximately 4-5-2018, Monarch was diagnosed with a “fixable” heart condition, patent ductus arteriosus. If he didn’t receive expensive openchest surgery within 2-4 weeks, he would die of congestive heart failure. If he underwent the procedure, his prognosis was excellent. Sheets Pet Clinic immediately began a fundraising campaign and in less than a week raised over $4000 from kind souls. Monarch had surgery at 10 weeks old, was a perfect patient, healed rapidly, and is playing and doing all kinds of normal kitten things now. He received a follow-up on July 20 and his heart is functioning normally. His heart is fixed and he will NOT have to have special treatment or meds. He is highly social and happy-go-lucky. Sada & Daddie are a bonded pair and will not be separated. This loving and beautiful Dober pair are truly inseparable. They came to us from an owner who recently had several surgeries and could no longer give them proper care. That fact was reflected in their condition on arrival - fleas, dental needs, and heartworm. They also needed to be neutered and spayed. Thankfully, all their needs have been treated, so they’re fit and ready for a new home at this time. They are very bonded and best of Doberman Rescue friends. One of our volunteers said, “Their of the Triad temperaments and personalities couldn’t be any calmer or sweeter. They both get into the car on their own and love to go for rides. They listen to their humans and follow each other around.” Read about Sada and Daddie at www.doberman-rescue.com. HUMANE SOCIETY OF ALAMANCE COUNTY 336.438.2023 / www.hsaconline.org

Winnie is a very loving and

Binx.

faithful dog who thinks she is a lap dog! She is active during the day and enjoys games of tug-of-war and fetch, but at 8 pm, she turns into a pumpkin and just wants to cuddle and sleep. Hiking, running, and swimming are just a few of her favorite activities. She is extremely smart--she’ll ring a bell on the door to let you know she needs to go out and she would make a wonderful companion for a family, couple or single person with older children or teens. Are you ready to be her forever family?

I am Binx! I’m a frisky, clever little girl and I figure things out pretty quickly. I love to play. but with a bit of ear rubbing, I calm down and turn into a little purr ball. So far, I’ve only met other cats and people---I like both! My foster home has two older cats and while I love chasing around the house with the 1 year old, the 9 year old is taking some time to get used to me so I’m being polite and giving her space. I’d love to find a great family with another cat in the home for me to play with and having sweet kids to pay me attention wouldn’t be too bad either!

Playful, Happy, Obedient, Energetic, Beautiful, Enchanting...those are just a few words to describe this absolute wonder of a pup! Phoebe is a gorgeous soul who loves to interact with people, dogs and cats of all ages! She is very smart, very connected and just a joy to be around. A hug and a cuddle from this girl is sure to lift anyone’s spirits and any family would be lucky to have her join their home!

is a young boy who is full of energy, but most especially, love! He absolutely adores people and the company of other dogs, preferring to run around and play all day then follow that up with a long cuddle session on the couch. He is true to his Labrador characteristics-he lives to be in the water, swimming and splashing around! He is such a sweet boy with a wonderful disposition who deserves to have a wonderful, loving family that will give him the very best life has to offer, always.

Marissa.

I’m Marissa, a senior girl who enjoys jogging around the neighborhood with my foster mom so I would do great with an active family who also loves to run and play! I’m great with other dogs but haven’t had much interaction with cats, though I’m really easygoing and smart, so I could probably learn to love them. My favorite thing is evening cuddle time with my foster parents. I’m cratetrained, leash-trained and house-trained. I’m a Boston Terrier mix...and I am true to that breed so a forever person experienced with my personality would be great. Please find it in your heart to give my sweet soul a chance to have you love me throughout my days! GUILFORD COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER 336.641.3400 / www.myguilford.com/animal-shelter

Hubba Bubba, A004647, is a 6 year old, brown and white Bully mix. He is up-to-date on all his vaccinations, and is also neutered and microchipped. He loves people and walks well on the leash but needs to be an “only” dog. Hubba is also heartworm-positive but it is curable and your veterinarian can give you all the information about treatment and post-treatment care.

Hubba Bubba’s adoption fee is $50 at the Guilford County Animal Shelter! n

Wendy,

A007010 – a very stylish (although robust at 12 lbs.), two year old Tuxedo girl, is our diva! She has been at the shelter since June 20, 2018, after living on her own in the wilds of Guilford County. But Wendy is now ready to move into her forever home with a loving family who will appreciate her diva ways, giving her attention on demand, and then waiting on her paw and foot. Wendy’s adoption fee is also $25, covering her spay, up-to-date vaccinations and microchipping. Meet Wendy at the Guilford County Animal Shelter today! n

Bulwinkle,

A006797 – is a sweetheart of a cat! He is pure white, about two years old, and weighs 9 lbs., so he is a healthy-sized fellow. Bulwinkle was quite interested in the faux-fur-feathered toy, as well as being extremely photogenic. He would add class and distinction, and just that special touch of decoration, to any loving home!

Bulwinkle has been neutered, is up-to-date on all his vaccinations, and has been microchipped. His adoption fee is $25 at the Guilford County Animal Shelter today! n

Andromeda, A007162 – Miss Andromeda is a lovely, brown/orange tabby (her coat reminds you of a wild rabbit’s), who came to the shelter as a stray on June 26, 2018. She is just under two years old, and is a petite girl at 6 lbs. Andromeda is quite friendly and enjoys being stroked. Her adoption fee, $25, covers her spay, up-to-date vaccinations and microchipping. Meet Andromeda at the Guilford County Animal Shelter today! n

Theo,

A005350, is such a very handsome gentleman! Although not fond of being held, Theo does like to have his face rubbed and will let you know when he has had enough. He’s more of a “go away but not too far” kind of guy. However, he may very well warm up and get in touch with his softer side with the right person. Theo was surrendered on April 26, 2018. Theo’s adoption fee is also $25, covering his neuter, up-to-date vaccinations and microchipping. Meet him at the Guilford County Animal Shelter today! n

Miss Piper was surrendered at GCAS by her owner on July 18, 2018. Piper is a large (i.e., overweight at this time) spayed, female, DSW, approximately 3 years old, with a lovely caramel/light brown/white coat. She is very affectionate and friendly. She will need to be put on a diet, as Piper is currently a robust 15.5 lbs., and exercise (vigorous play) wouldn’t go amiss! Her $25 adoption fee covers her spay, up-to-date vaccinations, and microchipping. Meet Miss Piper at the Guilford County Animal Shelter today! n

Phantom. Can you get cuter than this?? Little Phantom earned her name because she kept eluding her rescuers. Their persistence paid off and now Phantom has Triad Independent Cat Rescue transformed into one sweet little girl. Her picture doesn’t do the beautiful swirls of her classic tabby markings justice. Phantom has tested negative for Felv/ FIV/Heartworm, is up-to-date on her vaccines, and will be spayed prior to adoption. Go to www.triadcat.org and put in an application if you want Phantom or contact Triad Independent Cat Rescue at triadcat@yahoo.com. n

Sky

is a (10 yr. old) Tennessee Walking Horse that was surrendered to us when his owner could no longer afford to take care of him. Sky was loved by his owner and she enjoyed trail riding this sweet boy for several years before she made the hard decision to let him go. Sky loads on a trailer, stands to be clipped and stood quietly for the vet and farrier. We have found that Sky does better when turned out with other geldings as opposed to mares or in a mixed herd. Sky will stand in a stall but does get a little worried about being separated from his friends so we continue giving him time to sort out the benefits of a stall (i.e. fans on a hot day). Sky also needs some more work on his ground manners (something his previous owner let us know) and is enjoying time working with a wonderful volunteer that owns Joan Mahaffey Horsemanship. After each session Joan is always happy to report how wonderful this guy is and how he improves each time. Learn more online at www.reddogfarm.com. n

Maxine.

This sweet young mama cat was found on a Goodwill Truck with her two newborn kittens. Maxine was a great mom and her daughters, Myrtle and Mattie are now weaned, 14 weeks old, and also available for adoption. However her babies are going to be bigger than her very soon. Maxine tops the scale at just a little over 5 pounds, talk about a cute “Permanent Kitten!” Maxine is still a little shy but is very comfortable in a calmer home. Learn more online at www.reddogfarm.com or stop by Crooked Tail Cat Cafe to meet her today. n

Tutti Fruiti.

This sweet girl came to us from a large hoarding situation with several other rabbits. Tutti is a Lionhead Rabbit and around 6 years old. She is a sweet female rabbit who is looking for a low key female to retire with. She is litter box trained and enjoys all her treats and chew toys in her current foster home. If interested in her fill out an application at www.reddogfarm.com and her adoption fee is $30. n

Edy is as sweet as the ice cream she’s named after. This large puppy has lots of energy to burn. She is very playful and needs an active family that will exercise her and continue her obedience training. She loves to play with other dogs but can be too much at times. Edy has not learned to read other dog’s clues as to when playtime is over. Edy thinks everyone is as active as her and could go for miles and miles. This young girl is looking for her forever family. Apply today to meet her at www.reddogfarm.com. n

Ethel.

Meet Ethel! This adorable piggy has tons of personality and is super sweet. She came to us through our local animal shelter as a stray and now hopes to find her forever home. We do not know any of her history since she was a stray so we aren’t 100% sure of her breed, but we do know she has unusually long legs for a pot belly pig so we think Ethel is a cross of some sort. What we do know is that when she trots up to you for a scratch or a treat she will win your heart! We estimate her age to be approximately 1.5 years and she is very healthy. Ethel is UTD on her vaccines. Visit www.reddogfarm.com to read our Red policies and information regarding adopting potbellied pigs. n

Jake.

Triad Golden Retriever Rescue

Hey it’s Jake! I am a 7 year old Golden Retriever with a lot of personality. I like to play fetch, or just play in general, but when I’m done, I’ll curl up next to your feet and just chill. I do okay in the car and okay on a leash, but I do need to be the only dog in the household! I’d do best with someone who is a strong leader, because I can be a little strong-headed at times! Overall I’m a catch though!

As a member of the family, your pet deserves the very best possible care...

Buffy! Here is a sweet, loving, and very lonesome girl with a beautiful buff color and amber eyes. Alone in a bedroom, she rushes to the door to greet me. Other cats give her a hard time. She has a playful spirit with feathers, and has a touch of mischief too. She’s up-to-date on vaccinations, microchipped and FIV negative. $25 adoption donation and would like vet references.

Please contact Purrfect Friends Cat Rescue at 336-615-0140 if you’re interested in Buffy. n

Bocephus

is a good old country boy who was picked up as a stray and found himself at the Rockingham County Animal Shelter. He is a smaller gentleman who we estimate to be around 7 years old. Bo is leash-trained, crate-trained, loves other dogs, enjoys leisurely walks, chewing toys, car rides, and being with people he loves. SPCA OF THE TRIAD 336.375.3222 / www.triadspca.org

Kodiak. Look at this big ball of love! Kodiak is a Husky mix, almost 3 years old, who loves to frolic and play. His different colored eyes are the first thing you notice about him. Kodiak has a lot of energy and enjoys settling down and being brushed. He has fun with adults and children but would be best as an only dog. If you are interested in adopting Kodiak, call SPCA of the Triad at 375-3222 for more information. n

Patrick. Handsome. This 3 -1/2 month old orange tabby kitty can be described in that single word. He was rescued with his Mom and one sibling off the street. He is still learning to play and romp and would love someone to bring him home and show him the world can be a fun place for a kitty! If Patrick is the kitty you have been searching for, please call SPCA of the Triad at 375-3222. n

Brodey. Take a look at this pup! Brodey is about 1 year old, and the sweetest dog you have ever met. He gets along with all two-legged and four- legged creatures. He likes to go for walks, play, sit in the sun, the list goes on. We have not found anything he doesn’t enjoy! Brodey is a very happy boy just looking for someone to love him. If Brodey has caught your interest, please call SPCA of the Triad at 375-3222 for more information. n

Sienna. This princess is the epitome of a lap cat. She is a very calm girl, some say she is the perfect feline. Sienna likes to sit on a shelf in the cat room and watch the antics of the kittens. She is an adult cat in a teenage kitty’s bod who gets along well with the other cats, stays in her lane and co-exists nicely. Sienna is very fond of gazing out the window. If you like Sienna as much as we do, please call SPCA of the Triad at 375-3222 for more information. n

Mano.

How can you resist this face? Mano is a 1 year old Chihuahua mix that is patiently waiting for a home of his own. He is very curious and mindful of things that go on around him. Mano settles down quickly and will make a great couch companion. He seems to be good for any family, likes people and does OK with other dogs. If Mano has peaked your interest, please call SPCA of the Triad at 375-3222 for more information. n

Morgan. Are you ready to make a difference in life for one soul? This gray tabby girl is approximately one year old. Morgan wandered up into a local yard alone and hungry. She was brought to our Center where she is learning to trust a little more each day. Her favorite thing is a loving scratch behind the ears and a soft gentle voice telling her how special she is. If Morgan seems like the kitty you have been looking for, please call SPCA of the Triad at 375-3222. n

Cara is a wonderful and smart girl who is looking for her most perfect forever family! She is good with other dogs and is learning many new things in her foster home. They are working diligently on manners and basic training with her. This silly girl is about 4 years old, spayed, cratetrained, walks well on a leash, and loves to run zoomies in her Blue Ridge Boxer Rescue yard. Cara is super friendly and has a good amount of energy so a fenced yard would be preferred. If you think Cara would make the perfect addition to your family, please visit www.blueridgeboxerrescue.com for more information and to apply! n

Chillie

Laila: I was found in a crawl space

wandered up to a house a few months ago with no microchip or collar and after trying to find an owner the folks took her in and did all her vetting and she is now ready for a forever home. Chillie wants to be a part of a family and enjoy the great INDOORS more than outdoors! No hunting for this sweet girl; she just wants to be with her people!

under a vacant house looking for a safe place to have my six babies. I am a beautiful tuxedo girl with a matching personality… sweet, gentle, affectionate and playful. I haven’t had much exposure to my foster siblings (other cats and dogs) yet, but so far I am rather leery of them because I am protective of my babies. I am looking for a special someone or family who will give me an indoor home, treat me like a member of the family and allow me time to gradually acclimate to possible new cat or dog siblings. For all the love you give me, I’ll give it back to you tenfold. Estimated DOB 4/2017.

You can meet Chillie on Saturday between noon and 3 at 311 Harvey Street in Winston Salem. Due to a home visit she cannot be adopted outside a 45 minute radius from Winston Salem. n

Visit many of our cats at the AARF House (311 Harvey St, Winston Salem) during our adoption fair hours. Go to www.aarfanimals.org for info about our adoption fair hours and adoption process. n

Dalton:

Leo

I was found next to a school and given to an AARF foster. I had lots of medical stuff going on and the volunteer vet at AARF helped me recover. My foster syringe fed me, and oh, how I love kitten milk! I eat FancyFeast pate now and kitten chow. I enjoy running the house with lots of foster kittens and mom’s 4 cats and 3 small dogs. We love to chase coils and springs and each other. I enjoy sleeping in the cat bed next to mom and the dogs or cuddling with mom. I would love to be with one of my housemates - Chew Chi, Krissy, Boone, Wilmington, or Cary. Please make me a part of your family. DOB 5/7/18.

was rescued from a shelter in western North Carolina by a rescue group who had no foster home for him, so they boarded him for a month until someone felt sorry for him and took him to foster. He was adopted and after just a few days the adopter realized he just did not have the time to give a pet, so he was brought back and placed back in boarding until the same person took him and he was then brought to AARF. He is a great, high-energy two year old who loves to play, but NO CATS!

Visit many of our cats at the AARF House (311 Harvey St, Winston Salem) during our adoption fair hours. Go to www.aarfanimals.org for information about our hours and adoption process. n

Squeak

is a 2 year old Pomeranian whose owner passed away. He is house and crate-trained. He loves to give kisses and is fine with the other small dogs in his foster home. He is adorable! Come meet Squeak at AARF’s Saturday adoption fairs at 311 Harvey Street from noon to 3pm in the backyard. Due to a home visit being part of the adoption process, applicants must live within 45 minutes of Winston-Salem. n

Duchess

is a calico female who was born April 30, 2018. She was found in a car lot on top of a tire filthy from head to toe, eye infection, full of fleas and scared to death! She has completely turned the corner and has become a lap cat. As soon as you sit down, she is right there wanting your attention. She may be named Duchess but she thinks she is the Queen!!! She is a cuddle bug. She is current on age appropriate shots and does well with other cats. Meet and visit with many of our cats at 311 Harvey St, Winston Salem during our adoption fair hours. Go to www.aarfanimals.org for information about our adoption fair hours and adoption process. n

Emily was born on February 25th, 2018. She is only 14 weeks old and weighs approx. 3 lbs. We received Emily’s mom from a bad hoarding situation and a couple of days later, Emily was born. We think that she is a Jack Russell/Chihuahua mix. She is a typical puppy, full of energy and she Chihuahua Rescue loves to play with her two sisters and three brothers. She will be foster-to-adopt until she is spayed and CRT will pay for her remaining DHPP and Rabies shots as well as her spay if one of CRT’s vets is used. To submit an adoption application for sweet Emily visit our website: http://chihuahua-rescue.com/adoption-application/. n

FORSYTH HUMANE SOCIETY 336.721.1303 / www.forsythhumane.org

Filly is a five year old girl with a beautiful soul. She has been in our care since the first day we began our partnership with Forsyth County. Filly was heartworm positive, had mange, and allergic reactions which caused most of her fur to be worn away. On top of her skin conditions, she was left to live outside attached to a chain with her puppy. Despite the odds, Filly is a very friendly and loving dog. She loves to be with people. These days, Filly is optimistic. She knows her loving and forever home is right around the corner. Could it be with you? To meet Filly or find out more information, please call Forsyth Humane Society at 336-721-1303. n

Baloo

is a six year old, but you wouldn’t guess it when he is ready to play fetch! He’s got the perfect energy level for a home with a young couple or a single household. He has the definition of puppy-dog eyes. He is completely potty-trained, too! This sweet boy is a staff favorite, and we can’t wait to see him go home! If you would like to meet Baloo please call Forsyth Humane Society at 336-721-1303. n

Chilly

is a beautifully marked, marble tabby who is playful and curious. She has an engaging personality and enjoys playtime. She likes to be petted, but is somewhat of a diva when she is not the center of attention or when she is put back into her kennel before she is ready. Chilly might best enjoy a home where she is an only cat and can be given all of the attention to which she feels she is entitled. She can be expected to become a beloved house pet. To meet Chilly or find out more information, please call Forsyth Humane Society at 336-721-1303. n

Coco was a shy two year old when she came to Forsyth Humane Society. Coco has since come out of her shell. She is highly motivated by treats, and loves attention from people. She will need a home with owners who are prepared to keep this smart dog entertained and learning. She has done well with other dogs, and would likely love to have a puppy sibling to play with. To meet Coco or get more information, please call FHS at 336-721-1303. n

Panther

is a petite female with striking yellow-green eyes. She is a friendly tabby who deserves so much love. This girl was an absolutely wonderful mother to her four boys and to a foster kitten who she lovingly cared for as her own. She would do best in a quieter home where she can get the attention she deserves. She is a bit scared of new environments at first, but warms up quickly. She will co-exist with a calm dog who is willing to give her space. If you would like to meet Panther or find out more information, please call Forsyth Humane Society at 336-721-1303. n

Xena is an all-around great cat. She was a wonderful, patient, nurturing mother. She even warmed up to another set of kittens and their mother. She is the kind of cat that will walk right up to you and ask for love. She enjoys sitting on the window sill and watching the world go by. She will be a great cat for a household with calm and mature children. To meet Xena or find out more information, please call Forsyth Humane Society at 336-721-1303. n

Canada Goose Control with Working Border Collies

oose Masters is a local family-owned and operated goose control service company that utilizes trained border collies to control nuisance Canada Geese throughout the Carolinas and Northern Florida. With over 55 years of dog handling and training experience, our dogs help move nesting pairs, families and large flocks of geese from manicured lawns, picnic areas, playgrounds, marinas, lakes, streams, and retention ponds. The goose control techniques that are utilized by Goose Masters are approved by the USDA Wildlife Services and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. In addition, the Humane Society and PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) recommend the use of working Border Collies for Canada goose control. When asked what set Goose Masters apart from other goose control companies Gwen Kuykendall said, “I guess you could really say what makes us superior to everyone else is that our whole family was built around these dogs and for us it goes much deeper than just the business. Back when Kent and I were dating he gave me Salt, my first border collie, and the rest is history. Here we are nearly three decades, two children, and a few hundred dogs later and still going strong. We are successful because our customers are successful! That’s the Kuykendall’s Border Collies’ motto!” President and Head

Goose Master Kent Kuykendall said, “Working together as a family and in conjunction with our staff, we have the experience, facility, and scope to offer the best dogs and service in the goose control industry. Some of our handlers are even fourth generation family members. We may not be the biggest, but we’re the best!” Goose Masters is unique when compared to other goose control services because it is a direct service of Kuykendall’s Border Collies. The Kuykendall’s have been in the Border Collie business longer than any other goosedog company in operation. With over 55 years of breeding world class Border Collies, including 3 national champions, it’s safe to say they know this breed of dog better than anyone else in the goosedog industry. The Kuykendall’s originally started with training dogs to work livestock and although they knew what was going on in the industry in the realm of goosedogs, they did not branch out that way until the Asheboro Country Club reached out to them in the early 90’s. They realized that there was a need for goosedogs in their own back yard. They started training goosedogs and thus the seed for Goose Masters was planted. Now with over 25 years of uninterrupted service to the goose control industry, Goose Masters is servicing properties all across the Southeast and providing goosedogs to properties all across the country.

Meet Nial

Shelter staff believe that Nial is of British extraction, due to his calm and steady demeanor (though never stuffy or pretentious)... until the toys come out! He is great fun to play with and quite enthusiastic about trying to catch the feather-thing-on-a-stick. Nial is a beautiful, black and white neutered male, just a very little over one year old. His adoption fee is $25 and covers his neuter, up-to-date vaccinations and microchipping. Ask for Nial, ID A007627, at the Guilford County Animal Shelter! Visit www.myguilford.com/animal-shelter for hours and information or call 336-641-3400.
