ON THE COVER: Macguyver decided to give up his TV career and settle down in Winston-Salem. Just like his TV show, Macguyver knows how to fix any problem. He protects shy cats and teaches kittens what life is all about. Macguyver had a rough start but now he’s on a mission to help those in need. He had one of his front legs amputated due to an injury, but you’d never know it, nothing slows him down. He’s a real love bug who enjoys being held, a favorite of all who meet him.

Judy Fradenburg rescued Macguyver, please read his compelling story on page 12.

Make the Holidays Happy, Not Hazardous!

T

he holiday season is upon us and we all want to include our furry family member in each and every festivity, but are we being safe and responsible pet parents?

While some of the more common threats, like chocolate, are better known, there are many other holiday dangers you should be aware of to help prevent accidents and trips to the emergency room.

Toxic Plants: Decking the halls with boughs of holly may not be so jolly for your pets. Make sure to keep your pets from ingesting these commonly misunderstood plants: poinsettia, mistletoe, holly, Christmas trees and Christmas cacti. While these plants are considered to be less toxic, they can cause mild, usually self-limiting vomiting and diarrhea. Other highly toxic plants, such as lilies, can cause severe kidney failure and death in cats, even with the smallest exposure. Vomiting and lethargy usually develop within several hours and your pet can rapidly deteriorate. In these cases, you should seek medical attention for your pet immediately. Holiday Treats and Snacks: That plate of cookies doesn’t only look and smell tempting to us humans. Most dogs wouldn’t hesitate to scarf down a delicious holiday treat or the whole plate if given the opportunity. Be sure to keep these treats away from your pets: chocolate, xylitol sweetener, fatty foods, grapes, raisins, onions, nuts, alcoholic beverages and other harmful leftovers. You take a bite of a cookie or baked good and your pet looks at you with those big brown eyes. What’s one bite going to hurt right? Wrong! Artificial sweeteners contained in some gums, toothpastes, puddings, peanut butters and baked goods can cause severe hypoglycemia and liver problems even with a very low exposure. A small piece of leftover turkey sandwich may not cause problems for the otherwise healthy pet; however, pancreatitis and GI upset is the #1 reason for emergency veterinary visits during the holiday season. Small pets and animals with sensitive systems can develop serious illness

Brooke Townsend, DVM Sedgefield Animal Hospital and Dental Center Dr. Brooke is a Greensboro native and has worked at Sedgefield Animal Hospital and Dental Center for six years. A graduate of North Carolina State, she has been practicing veterinary medicine for 12 years. Her interests include internal medicine, soft tissue surgery, dermatology and geriatrics. Dr. Brooke enjoys working closely with pet owners to provide all of her patients with the best quality of life and medical care.

from only a small amount of holiday treats. It’s best and a lot safer to skip the “people food” altogether. Decorations: They help spread the holiday cheer but if ingested by your four-legged friend that holiday cheer will cost you more than you bargained for. Tinsel, ornaments, garland, ribbons and bows are just a few new inviting toys for your pets. Why they would eat them is beyond us, but it never fails, some are bound to try. Liquid potpourri is another attractive dangerous item to pets. Potpourri can cause irritation and ulceration of the skin and GI tract. Snow globes can contain ethylene glycol (antifreeze), so be sure to keep these out of reach. We know your pet can’t live in a bubble but be sure to keep decorations up high, place a baby gate to keep them out of a certain room, or only allow them access to decorated areas of the house while being supervised. Toys and Gifts: ‘Tis the season! Yes, we give gifts and stockings with treats to our pet family too. There are a few misconceptions about toys and treats that can cause more damage to your pet, especially his teeth. Tennis balls (and similar toys covered in feltlike fabric) can actually wear down tooth enamel, causing defects and other problems. Hard balls and bones can actually fracture and break your pet’s teeth. Dogs were actually not designed to chew animal bones, antlers, cow hooves, hard plastic bones or anything else that is hard and rigid. A dog’s enamel is thinner than a person’s and yet they have 4-10 times the bite force as a human. So, if they bite down on a hard substance with no ‘give’ (or flexibility) to it, the tooth will break. Know your pet, if he/she has a tendency to tear up toys or ingest items, avoid giving them toys, especially if left unsupervised. Obstructions and “foreign body ingestions” are far more common this time of the year than any other time. We all want to have a great holiday season and our pets deserve the best too. Just remember safety should come first and consult with your veterinarian if you have any concerns. Enjoy spoiling your pet this year and be sure to support those pets in our community still looking for their forever families. Remember a great gift idea for any pet lover and animal friend would be donating or sponsoring a shelter or rescue pet on their behalf!

Marilyn

is ready for her forever family! This girl came to us emaciated, naked from fleas and with a vertebrae sticking out of the tip of her tail. That is all behind her now, and she is absolutely thriving! Marilyn has been in foster care for over a year and is one of the resident favorites. She is in great health, is cratetrained, and knows basic commands. Her energy level is moderate, meaning that she enjoys a good walk and has an The Fort Rescue occasional spurt of energy, but would be happy to curl up in bed as well. She will make a wonderful addition to her forever family. Marilyn is about 3 years old and would do best as the only dog in the home. She is current on vaccinations and heartworm/flea/tick preventative. She has been spayed and microchipped. If you are interested, please contact thefortrescue@gmail.com.

Ariel is a beautiful Manx/ Siamese mix cat. She’s a stumpy and is a tortie point in color. She was born about July 2009. She arrived emaciated. We had her spayed and some teeth removed, she has gained weight and she looks beautiful. Tailless Cat Rescue Ariel is a very quiet and gentle cat She does fine with other gentle cats but can be bullied. She loves to play with a fishing pole toy, loves cardboard scratchers, and likes to be near people. She’ll sit in your lap for a bit, but prefers being near you. She also loves to play with the ipad! She will need a dental supplement to maintain the health of her remaining teeth. We like periosupport and will send some home with her. Ariel is vaccinated, vetted, wormed, spayed, microchipped and is FeLV/ FIV negative. For more information visit www.taillesscatrescue.com or you can email: taillesscatrescue@hotmail.com. n

Vet’s Corner SO HOW DO YOU KNOW YOUR PET HAS A PROBLEM?

Stacey Chappell, DVM Dr. Stacey Chappell is a seasoned veterinarian with over 20 years’ experience with small animals. He spent most of his earlier career as the owner and medical director of a veterinary emergency hospital, gaining vast experience in diagnosing, treating critical care patients and performing advanced surgical procedures.

Most of the time it is “painfully obvious” such as:

After taking over Animal Medical Centre of Greensboro, PA, in August 2014, Dr. Chappell now enjoys forming lasting relationships with his clients and patients based on lifetime preventive care.

• Odor and/or discharge from the ear(s)

Doggy Ear Health: What’s Going on in There?

• Shaking or tilting of the head • Crying out and pawing at the ear (or neck and cheek area) • Redness (inflammation) of the ear flap and the canal

NOW LET’S CHARACTERIZE THE TYPE OF PROBLEM:

What do the head shaking and scratching really mean?

• Acute (sudden/first time) or chronic (recurrent or persistent)

Your dog is shaking his head and scratching at his messy, smelly ears……AGAIN!!! Do you wonder what to do? Well, don’t feel bad, you aren’t alone! Ear problems are consistently the number one reason people seek veterinary care for their pets. VPI (Veterinary Pet Insurance) reports more than 60,000 claims per year for ear problems. Second on their list is skin allergy and third is skin infection. Most of these could likely be lumped together under “atopy” (classic allergies, specifically dermatitis). I want to make sure we make clear the association between the two.

• Cause: infectious, inflammatory (allergic), parasitic or sometimes foreign object/tumor/polyp • Underlying factors: mainly allergies, thyroid disease HOW DO WE PROCEED? DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT: Your veterinarian will thoroughly examine your pet, not just the affected ear and obtain a history, especially about previous ear problems. Typically a cotton swab is introduced into the ear to help characterize the type of debris present and assess how painful your pet’s condition is.

I would like to share some information that will hopefully help you better understand your dog’s ear and the some of the problems they commonly encounter.

SEDATION IS COMMONLY NEEDED TO COMPLETELY AND, AS PAINLESSLY AS POSSIBLE, OBTAIN SAMPLES FOR FURTHER ANALYSIS AND TO CLEAN AND APPLY INITIAL MEDICATION

Dog’s ears make a sharp turn upward and open from the “vertical canal” (see diagram). This makes

trapped moisture and

debris and a much more difficult path for goop working its way out of the canal.

TO THE EARS! • The cornerstone of ear treatment is complete cleaning of the ear followed by application of a medication that typically includes an anti-fungal (to manage yeast that is so prevalent), an antibiotic to manage bacteria that is commonly associated (either Staph species as an opportunistic infection or Pseudomonas species….and others that can be primary causes of ear infection). • If this is a recurrent problem it is best to obtain cultures to make sure we know exactly which organism is present and that we have an appropriate medication to effectively eliminate the infection, AND CONSIDER OTHER CONTRIBUTING FACTORS. Conclusion: Ear infections in dogs are exceedingly common and most

often involve infection with a bacteria and/or yeast. Ear problems that

are recurrent should be evaluated for underlying causes, mainly aller-

flow, more trapped moisture and debris, and a much more difficult path for goop working its way out of the canal. The “tympanic membrane” is the ear drum. Infection from here to the outside is called “otitis externa”. Infection deeper within the ear is called “otitis media” (middle ear) and “otitis interna” (inner ear). For the most part we are discussing external ear infection, but the others can be an extension of external ear infection if left untreated.

Harley

and Houdini are five month old siblings. Chi Chi is a sweetie who loves people so much she usually starts purring the minute you pick her up. She loves to snuggle and lay with you and give you licks on the nose. They both are social and great with new people and animals. Can’t say enough good things about these cats - so sweet and loving!

has had quite a few accomplishments since coming to HSAC. Due to being in a home with a great foster family she is now house-trained, crate-trained, knows “sit”, “down” and if she gets into something she shouldn’t all you have to do is tell her no! If she feels that you aren’t giving her enough attention at any given time she will just come lay by your feet and roll onto her back and paw you until you pet her. She enjoys going on hikes at Cedarock Park, playing with the dogs and the kids in the backyard. Harley is such a loving, caring dog and will be a great addition to some lucky family.

Bones. Hello! My name is Bones and I am 4 years old (DOB 3/1/11). I came from a hoarding situation where there were 40 other dogs and who knows how many cats? I didn’t get much individual attention so when I first came into rescue, I wasn’t quite sure about being held or being Chihuahua Rescue petted. My pupils stay dilated all of the time so I am “legally blind” but I get around just fine. My teeth were so bad that I had to have two dental procedures and now I don’t have a lot of teeth, but feel much better. I weigh 5-6 lbs.

Joni's

middle name is PLAY. She loves to chase balls and loves small fuzzy toys. She will get the small toys in her mouth and talk to them. One of Joni’s best traits is that she is a great cuddler. Speaking of talking her purr is as smooth as her namesake, Joni Mitchell. Joni has been a delightful foster kitten in her foster home. She gets along well with the other cats and dogs and is, for the most part, a team player. Joni was born on 6/18/15 and has been spayed, vaccinated, and is negative for feline diseases. Joni was rescued from a local shelter where she was abandoned. She was very sick when she came to us but is now a thriving kitten. Call ARFP at 336-574-9600 for more information. n

Lizzie

was born in June 2015. She was found in an abandoned building weighing only 12 ounces. She was very hungry and wanted to be rescued. Lizzie loves to play, loves to eat, and gets along well with dogs and other cats. She is a dainty looking cat with beautiful orange and grey markings. Lizzie is ready to snuggle in her forever home. Are you ready for a snuggler? Contact ARFP at 336-574-9600 for more information. n

Kyle

Gilda.

Born April 11, 2015, this teenage girl is an explorer that is trying to figure out this so called life. She has a quiet personality, yet loves to join the party when the moment hits her. Gilda loves to play with her foster sisters and brothers. She is always willing to allow one of the other cats to be the leader and she follows along in the action. Gilda is looking for a home that will love her forever and ever. Do you have room for this bundle in your life? Gilda is spayed, up-to-date on shots and negative for feline diseases. Call us today at 336-574-9600. n

Trixie.

Four months old and a little Diva is what she already thinks she is. Trixie aka Sassy Pants is a Chihuahua mix with spunk, personality, moxie, attitude, and a pure zest for life! She is so funny to watch when she is playing with all of her friends. This little girl NEVER meets a stranger and loves other animals. Of course, she makes up the rules as she goes. Trixie would make a fun addition to any small dog loving home. Call ARFP at 574-9600 for more information. n

Monet.

is looking for a forever home. She has been with a wonderful family for several months and they love her dearly, however, she needs a younger set of parents that are on her energy level. Kylie is about a year of age and is currently in part 2 of her obedience training with a reputable trainer. She loves people, loves her crate, and is good with other dogs. Kylie weighs less than 50 lbs and is a spayed female Lab mix. Did you ever know that gregarious kid that wanted to be friends with everyone and wasn’t the best listener? That’s Kylie!.

You might not be able to tell it just from looking, but I’m a world class toy catcher. Top ranked in both catching toys thrown over my head and the game of fetch, I’m getting ready to go pro! And that doesn’t even begin to cover my skills in tail-chasing. That’s a tough one, I tell you. But, if you want to be great, you have to work at it. And I work so hard that when the training day’s over, I fall asleep in the nearest lap. Those post workout massages get me every time. I’ve been training since April 2015. I don’t use performance enhancing substances, but I am current on all my vaccines and have been neutered (they say it reduces my drag coefficient).

RED DOG FARM ANIMAL RESCUE NETWORK www.reddogfarm.com For a current list of upcoming events please visit our website at www.reddogfarm.com.

Maverick and his buddy, Goose, were originally rescued as small kittens from the Surry County Animal Shelter back in July. When the person that pulled them was unable to find them forever homes they came to Red Dog Farm. These two teenagers are very social and sweet. Maverick LOVES to cuddle and to be held. Maverick and Goose are ready to be your wingmen and go home with you today. Please complete the adoption application online at www.reddogfarm.com if interested in adopting these handsome fellas. n

Honey

came to us when her owners could no longer care for her. She had an abscess that has been treated but she still has a scar from it. It is right under her chin and you can’t even tell that it is there. She is afraid that it may prevent someone from adopting her but we assured her that personality means so much more when looking for a family. Honey is very sweet and would make a great pet for just about any family. If you are interested in adopting her, please visit www.reddogfarm.com. n

When the person that had pulled them was unable to find them forever homes they came to Red Dog Farm. These two teenagers are very social and sweet. Goose is a curious guy and LOVES to explore the world but will settle for a lap every now and then. They get along well with other cats and do not have to be adopted together but would do best with a playmate. Maverick and Goose are ready to be your wingmen and go home with you today! Vinny

is a 4 year old La Mancha goat that was bottle-raised and is extremely tame and friendly. He has been neutered and is up-to-date on vaccines. He is in a foster home with other goats and potbellied pigs and gets along with both. Vinny is looking for a herd of his own, visit www.reddogfarm.com to adopt this sweet boy! n

Madeline

came to us as an owner surrender through animal control. He had a body score of 1 on a 1 to 10 scale – he was totally emaciated. Today, you can’t tell that Spirit was ever that bad, he is doing great in his foster care and put weight back on nicely. Spirit has a really nice personality, his foster parents report that he walks with them every morning when they take the dogs out. He now spends all day with his “foster herd” (4 mini donkeys and 1 horse). We have begun doing some ground work with him as well. He is absolutely the sweetest horse ever!

came to us from the Guilford County Animal Shelter with several other miniature horses. She is a 5 year old mare. Madeline is by far the sweetest and most socialized of the bunch. Madeline is always the first to greet her foster mom. She stood well while being groomed and did very well for our farrier too.

Please visit www.reddogfarm.com to adopt this beautiful horse! n

SPCA OF THE TRIAD 336.375.3222 / www.triadspca.org

Abigail

Sophie

was found as a feral kitty but was much too sweet to send back out into the wild. She is about 3 years old and is a DSH cat whose coat is black, white and orange. The orange and black patches are arranged in the most unique markings on her white coat. Abigail is beautiful, affectionate, and loves other animals. She is curious and likes to follow people around to see what they are doing. Abigail enjoys play time and is very affectionate. She has been spayed, is up-to-date on all shots and has a microchip.

came to the SPCA of the Triad after being freed from a long-time situation that was slightly better than living on the street. Sophie’s owners had a baby and feared the kitty would hurt the child, so they put Sophie in a room alone where she received little interaction with anyone. Their fear was completely unfounded, especially since she is de-clawed, yet Sophie lived like this for years. Despite all she went through, this 10 year old, Tuxedo beauty didn’t let her isolation sour her spirit! She is still a sweet kitty and loves to receive attention and petting. Slowly she is opening up and learning to explore. Sophie has been spayed, is up-to-date on her vaccines and has a microchip. She also gets along with other kitties.

Tabitha is a very special an-

Abner

gel. Not only is she a beautiful 3 year old Calico kitty, but she is also blind. She has the biggest heart and gentlest nature you’ve ever met! Tabitha is looking for a home where the focus is on her and what she needs, a special human that can help her live a happy, healthy and love-filled life. She is a great lap cat and loves cuddles but her life needs to be more. She would do well in a calm environment with lots of love. She would be best with someone who stays at home and may not mind another cat, but we need to ensure her world is just as full as a kitty that can see. Tabitha has been spayed, is up-to-date on her shots and has a microchip.

is about 2 years old and is a male Canaan/ Malamute mix with light tan and white fur. He is smart, curious and would easily pick up any training. He likes to play but also loves getting affection and approval from his human. He is good with other dogs and enjoys going for walks. Abner is a good fit for an active home and would benefit from a fenced yard. One look at his deep set eyes and his little grin and you will be in love.

Winston,

aka Bucky, is a sweet little 9 year old Schnauzer. Such a good little boy, he gets along well with other dogs and people. Winston can’t wait to meet his forever family and is hoping for a new warm bed and lots of snuggles and attention. He is currently being fostered at Dog Days in Greensboro and comes with a 20-day daycare pass. Winston is a great dog who would do best in a home where his humans are a little older and are home most of the time. Call SPCA of the Triad at 375-3222 for more information. n

Da Vinci

is a very loving white and tan Jack Russell/Rat Terrier Mix. He is about 5-6 months old and was part of a litter of four. He does very well with other dogs and enjoys getting praise. Da Vinci is smart and loves to play. He would love a fenced yard to run in and a friend, not too big, to romp and play with. He is a good boy who would do well with older children or an older couple. He craves companionship and needs a friend and/or a stay at home human.

Sammy’s Story

W

inter is here and the days grow shorter in so many ways. December 10, 2013 marked the passing of our beloved Sammy. It’s cold in Syracuse, New York, and the snow comes early covering the ground and trees with a chilly white blanket. Not a good place to live outside. Sammy found himself at the SPCA again for the second time. The tender age of one found him back at a shelter with no time left. His previous adoptions had failed and he was literally at the end of the line. My Judy had been volunteering at the rescue, but had not planned on going by that day. On a whim, she stopped in to see if she could help. She walked in and was immediately smitten. Barely three pounds, but with soulful eyes and floppy ears, he was there. She swept him up and brought him home. Fate had intervened and we had a new family member, small in statue but blessed with an extraordinary personality! His emotions were always on display. We all have our ways of expression, but his were in those incredible ears! Those were oversized, always channeling, letting anyone know how he felt. The first few years were trying, as he brought memories of the scars he bore from his previous abuse. It was hard for him to trust again. Being rejected leaves its mark and he struggled so hard to open his huge heart and let someone come in and give him the love he so richly deserved. The seasons passed and with the turning of the world, he began to believe again. His confidence grew and he became quite proud of himself. We saw it every day in his prancing, which became known as his “Happy Walk”. His emotions were freely given, our boy was learning what love really means and we were learning too! One of the most endearing habits Sammy had was to get our attention while we were watching TV. The tiny little feet would tip toe up our chest and gently position himself two inches from our faces, staring directly into our eyes. If this ploy failed to rouse us, he became more creative. Next he would give us “nose kisses” pressing his moist little button nose into our noses as to His ears always betrayed his feelings. Try as he might, he never could will them to stand up straight. Emotions were transmitted through those oversized antennae. The tops of his ears flopped over, giving him a comical appearance. Before long he picked up the nickname “Sugarface” that somehow conveyed that adorable, bedeviling personality.

All he knew of people was hurt and rejection. Judy’s unwavering love allowed Sammy to believe again, and thrive in our home.

say, “Hey, I’m here you know!” Finally if all failed to get some reaction, he pulled out all the stops. Then came the irresistible, “nose nibbles”, where those tiny teeth gently nibbled on our noses, reducing us to willing victims to his whims. He got his desired result, Pupperonis! Judy and I had become his personal valets, a position we humbly accepted. Sammy had figured out the art of living with the human race. His intelligence with dealing with life had us constantly asking, “Did he just do that”? We have had many dogs, but this one was one in a million. Brilliant was ordinary to Sugarface. Lying on the sand at the beach on a lazy summer day, he would get lost in the moment. His black, shiny nose would be up in the air sniffing and taking in the salty air , floppy ears tuning into the cries of the seagulls. I swear he was loving it as much as we were. That wonderful face expressed a calm joy and contentment, which was his signature way of thanking us for everything. We were thanking him in return for the joy of his essence. The truth is, he made our lives better and we will carry his special spirit in our memories forever. It is our sincere hope that our “Sammy Story” will in some way shed a light on the life changing experience waiting for you at your local animal shelter or rescue group.

Long may you run!

Training Your Pet By Megan

PRACTICE Makes Perfect By Megan MacKenzie, Moms 4 Paws

he saying, “practice makes perfect” is a cliché for a reason. When you think about it, every individual who wins a competition, wins it for the same reasons that your dog becomes well-mannered and well-behaved. It’s all about consistency in training and conditioning. Too often people will adopt a puppy or rescue an adult dog and they will train their new dog in those first few weeks. When a routine is developed, the training tends to waver off or stop completely—or so we think. After some time has passed, your new dog won’t sit consistently when commanded to do so. You might find yourself saying “Sit” more than once, sometimes even more than five times before your dog will respond. We all get distracted with work, children, or our daily life in general. Certain behaviors are sometimes allowed and we don’t even realize it’s happening. Before you know it, it seems as though your once very well-trained dog now seems to have selective hearing, and only hears the sound of the plastic bag that holds their treats! The more consistent you are on training your dog, the better your training sessions will be. Set aside a few minutes daily to work on the basics that both you and your dog already know. Ten to fifteen minutes of training daily will make a world of difference in your dog. Not only will this sharpen your dog’s skills, but it will also help strengthen the bond between you and your dog. Training, when done correctly, is a lifelong experience. All too often, we think that after our dog has graduated from basic obedience class, we can go back home and expect excellent behavior for the rest of the dog’s life. This simply is not the case. Even when you’re not in a controlled environment and ask your dog to sit, you are still training. Have you ever been sitting at your computer or watching the television, while absentmindedly petting your dog? Then, if you stop, your dog will nudge your hand or paw at you until you start again? Again, the outcome is consistent, and you start to notice it happening every single time you sit down. Your dog is training you and has you well-trained. Bella learning “place”.

Over the next couple of weeks, get into the habit of doing mini refresher courses with your dog at home and while you are out and about. Even with a hectic schedule, you can still find a few minutes here and there where you can incorporate training. You can start to have your dog sit and wait while brushing your teeth in the morning, sit before going in and out of the house, sit and wait for their food, sit to be petted and have him or her work on laying down while you eat dinner. Remember to have fun. Don’t be stressed out or in a bad mood while working with your dog. Your energy level is very important when training your dog and it’s a great stress reliever. The more you practice, the better behaved your dog will be.

TIME and LOVE to RE-HOME and RESCUE

Great Treasures for the Home and Heart!! THE TREASURE HOUSE:

Smart and Stylish Living by Upcycling and Repurposing A Unique Shop

to have her own upscale re-sale/re-purpose business in her retirement AND help rescue and re-home small dogs. Both are great treasures for the home and heart!!! Mary Anne has traveled full circle. While growing up in Burlington, she would ride and show horses at the Alamance Saddle Club. After graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill, Mary Anne worked on a shrimp boat in South Carolina, a ski resort in North Carolina and did a little acting and modeling in California. She was on the final season of The Dating Game, a popular national television show in the 1970s hosted by Jim Lang. Through her experiences and international travels, she grew to appreciate the many treasures she found at estate sales, auctions and yard sales that were priced way below their value. She started her own booth at The Treasure House in 2007 and was then hooked, especially when she found a Persian rug for $25 and sold it at the Mebane Antique Auction for $850.00. In May of 2013 Mary Anne moved the business to downtown Burlington into two, back to back, adjoining historic buildings which she had purchased in 2010. Next time you visit, make sure you take notice of The Treasure House life-size zebra mascot named Oreo. Mary Anne says, “This is a thrilling business—to hunt and find exciting one-of-akind, pre-owned treasures and antiques, way below their market value, then pass the savings on and wow the customer is so exciting.”

The Treasure House Shoppes on Worth, LLC, better known as The Treasure House, is an upscale re-sale and re-purpose store in Historic downtown Burlington. It features over 30 intriguing dealers, fine consignments, several interior designers and a man cave, which all have their own designated space to exhibit their daily changing, vintage, one-of-akind furniture, home décor, jewelry, art, garden décor, collectibles and more. The Treasure House is located in two beautiful century-old buildings in which Above, The Treasure House entrance at the connecting walls have been removed to 346 South Worth Street, decorated for make one large, long building, extending from 2015 Christmas. Below, 347 South Main Worth Street to Main Street. The Treasure Street, circa 1950s (the other entrance to House has been awarded the Minetree Pyne The Treasure House). Historic Preservation Award. In the early 1900s, downtown Burlington’s very first gift shop was located in this same building when it was Kirk Holt Hardware. Today, The Treasure House is the only building downtown to have an atrium between two original buildings with the same century-old glass. The original architecture of these two historic buildings remains the same, even down to the original shoe bins from Marilyn Shoe Store in the 1960s. These original shoe bins are now used for the display of a large selection of Re-Home and Rescue crystal, silver-plate, brass and copper treasures. It is even more thrilling and life changing to help re-home a little The Treasure House is also special, in addition to the very diverse pet or rescue a pet from a bad situation. The Treasure House has given and unusual menagerie of treasures arriving daily, in that this fun store Mary Anne an expanded network of people to help with re-homing takes a collective team approach with a WIN WIN WIN attitude. She says, “By re-homing and rescuing little pets AND home love the opportunity to help you find the treasures you are looking for, furnishings, I get to play an important part in the great treasures for and if not found at The Treasure House, you are given a map of the the home and heart!!!” local consignment shops. Mary Anne began rescuing and re-homing pets in 2000. Her first About the Owner “re-home” was Chica, a little Chihuahua who was rescued by friends from Hurricane Floyd. Then there was the little brindle Chihuahua The Treasure House opened in 2007 and moved to another location that was left on the side of busy Edgewood Avenue in Burlington in in 2009 across from the City Park. Mary Anne Butler bought the his dog bed. Mary Anne and her sister rescued him and found him a business in July 2009 after retiring from a career in sales, beginning wonderful home in Chapel Hill. There was also Levi, who went to a with a class ring company for several years, then a contact lens loving home in 2007, Diva the Pomeranian mix, re-homed to Evelyn company for about 20 years and a lighting company for a couple of Shipley in 2007, Pepper the Shih Tzu, rescued in 2007 and Oscar the years. Mary Anne gained practical business experience while working Chihuahua, re-homed in 2008. Lexie and Peedee Pooh, both Shih in sales at a time when very few women worked in that field. and Meg Huffman rescued two Dachshunds from a family in Rowan County in 2010. The family could not afford veterinary and pet food expenses. The Huffmans went to get Molly the Dachshund and saw Stuart, her son, and took both dogs. Treasure House dealer, Joann Gwynn rescued Bentley from the Alamance County Shelter in 2012 and dealer, Marilyn Perkey rescued Lucy, a Black Lab mix. Close to Mary Anne’s heart is the Kindred Spirits Wildlife Center in Graham, NC, run by Peter and Dana Sims. They have been rescuing local wildlife for years through their center, which is donation-based. Peter and Dana also adopted their dog, Brennan in 2005. When Brennan was eight months old she was hit by a speeding car on Front Street at 7:00 am in the morning. Brennan was in critical condition and in tremendous pain. Her owners called Animal Control to take her to the shelter to be euthanized because they did not have the funds to help her. Mary Anne intervened and asked that the dog be taken to Dr. Brown’s Veterinary Clinic and she would take care of the bill. Brennan had many broken bones and one leg had to be amputated. She has been the lucky dog of Peter and Dana Sims for 10 years and is doing well. Sasha was a divine intervention. She was deathly sick and her veterinarian told her owner in August 2010, that it would be extremely expensive for her to be treated. So her owner thought the best thing would be to take her to the shelter where she shockingly found out that Sasha would be euthanized, due to her illness. Mary Anne received a call about Sasha and told them to bring the little dog to The Treasure House, then she would take her to her veterinarian, Dr. Ann Brady, get her well and find her a great home. Sasha had seven very large stones in her bladder and Dr. Brady removed them all successfully. Sasha was then adopted by Frank and Lee Longest. The following year Mary Anne rescued and fostered little Max, a small black and white Shih Tzu. Max was re-homed with Frank, Lee and Sasha Longest. Before Sasha, Mary Anne kept the Longest family’s beloved first pet, Mopsey, a Lhasa Apso, over several years when they needed a pet sitter. After sweet Mopsey died, the family was so brokenhearted they could not think of adopting another pet. There was so much heartbreak they did not want to even see a cute little Shih Tzu named Millie, that Mary Anne had rescued. Little Millie went to a great home and she is now Millie Coker. Several months later Sasha came in to Mary Anne’s life and she knew this was the perfect little pet for Frank and Lee, but still knew that Lee would not want to see her because they were still so brokenhearted. Mary Anne decided she would take Sasha in for a surprise visit to see Frank and Lee at work. Sasha ran right into Lee’s arms and it was such a wonderful moment in life. The rest is history. When Mary Anne took care of Mopsey in her very elder years, she thought of her as her own, dear Neaka, and now that Neaka is gone she truly understands the all encompassing pain of losing the unconditional love of such an extraordinary pet.

It Runs in the Family

Rescue runs deep in Mary Anne’s blood. Her sister, Anita, adopted Milo from Pomeranian Rescue in the fall of 2014. She brought him back to health and they are loving life together. Anita has rescued and re-homed so many dogs over the years, making this world a better place for so many pets and people. But there’s more. Anita rescued a four pound white rabbit from the Alamance County Animal Shelter. She intended for her mom to foster “Wabbit” but Wabbit became her mom’s beloved pet and lived a dream life and very long, wonderful life.

See many of the pets and people that have touched Mary Anne’s life on next page.

We have only mentioned a few of the loving pets and loving people that have been part of the journey in Mary Anne’s life. Without a doubt, these rescued and re-homed pets have enriched the lives of so many people. As for the pets, there is an old saying, “Saving one

animal may not save the world, but it will save the world for that one animal.” Mary Anne is so passionate about rescue. She has many more stories to tell and knows there will be many more to come. www.triadhappytails.com December 2015

He is best with older children that know to leave him alone or no kids in the home. Ollie is a great Pug and would do best in a low key to moderate home where he can get lots of attention. Mr. MacAfee’s Magical Mischief

r. MacAfee’s 8-yearold dog, Mischief, stared through the frosted window pane. She uttered gutteral growls, a warning meant to protect her territory from all potential intruders. Through the curtain of snow, she could see the outline of a young man sitting on the park bench across the street. The iridescent chocolate Labrador Retriever smushed her snout against the cold glass trying to get a better look. Her noises captured Walter’s attention bringing him to the window to see what all of the fuss was about. “What ya seein’ there, Girl?” Mischief cocked her head in Walter’s direction, as always, cognizant of and responsive to the old man’s voice. Here was a dog who knew that the most important part of life was not “things” but people. Eighty-four year old Walter peered out the window as he stood behind Mischief. He could see the lone man in what appeared to be a uniform being covered by the falling snow. “Come on, Girl; let’s go see if this fella needs our help.” The dog barked in agreement. Walter was a gentle old soul who cared more for other people and animals than himself. He and Mischief crossed through the street traffic to the park where the man was sitting. Walter’s long winter coat skirted the top surface of the banks dragging the snow behind them. As they approached the man, Walter spoke, “Are you all right, Son?”, then remembered that he should have introduced himself. “I’m Walter—Walter David MacAfee. And the one with her head in your lap is Mischief. She’s not my dog; she’s my best friend.” Mischief rested her head in the man’s lap looking up at him with her golden eyes. Walter could see a crystalized track that had streamed down the man’s cheek to form a nearly perfect tear drop in his week’s growth of beard. Slowly, the man’s gaze met Walter’s. “I’m Samuel—Sam— Captain Samuel Clark Sheffield—U. S. Army.” “Well, Sam, whataya doin’ out here so late on this snowy night?” Staring out into the darkness, Sam said, “I lost my best buddy in Afghanistan, and he took a bullet meant for me. I’m having trouble dealing with it.” “You know, Son, the night my wife, Ethel, died I came to this very park to get away. I sat on this very same bench. It was pouring

the story of one Christmas Eve... where two lost souls, an old one and a young one, bond together because of a dog whose love forges their eternal friendship.

rain, and I was soaked to my everlovin’ core. “Ethel and I had been married for 52 years. It wasn’t just love, it was an enduring friendship, or so I thought. While I was sitting mourning my loss, a chocolate Lab came up to me and put her head in my lap. “I used to sit on the sofa and Ethel would come over and lie down beside me with her head in my lap. That was the way she liked to talk to me. “The dog didn’t have a collar or any tags. Deep down, I knew she had been sent to me by my wife, a guardian angel to watch over me and to keep me company. I named her Mischief because she was, and that’s the way it

has been ever since that night. “What say we get you back to my house to get you warm and dry, okay Sam?” The welcoming warmth wafted over them as they entered the old man’s house. The smell usually associated with an old person’s home dissipated quickly leaving a feeling of comfort and contentment in its wake. “I’ve got a sweatshirt and pants that should fit you. Here Sam, put these on. They belonged to my son, Jeremy. He used to love jogging in warm-ups. We lost him in Vietnam. “Bathroom’s down the hall.” When Sam came back to the living room, Walter had hot cups of tea and a basket of biscuits sitting on the coffee table in front of the sofa. Walter pointed to the food and said, “Help yourself, Son. In a way, you remind me of him—my son. “Jeremy was our sunshine, Ethel’s and mine. And when he died it was like someone snuffing out a candle flame leaving us in the dark. It is the pain no parents should ever feel—losing a child. “Jeremy had a dog named Shep. That dog could read his mind. He lived to be at Jeremy’s side. “My son used to tell me, ‘A dog’s paws are the entrance to his heart.’ The two of them—they were totally in sync. Jeremy would look down at Shep without saying a word and Shep would immediately sit. Jeremy would then raise his little finger, and Shep would give him his right front paw to shake. It was a bond that would make them inseparable. “The first night of Jeremy’s wake at the funeral parlor, Ethel and I brought Shep with us so he could say goodbye. Shep went right over to Jeremy’s casket. Sat. Looked up. And then he raised his right front

We both cried a lot that night. “Well, I need to stop talking—we both need some sleep. I know I’m tired, and you must be too. You sleep here on the sofa in front of the fireplace. I always sleep in the recliner. I’ve done that ever since Ethel died.” A loud crack pierced the still night. A flash of fire was headed straight for Sam—a round from a sniper’s rifle. The bullet meant for him cut through the air, but struck his friend, Charlie, who shielded him. In a flash Charlie was gone. Sam held him as his last breath escaped. Sam’s tears indented the sand at his feet. Another shot rang out, this time a loud crack as the wood in the fireplace shifted. Sam bolted upright on the sofa and screamed. His recurring dream was all too real. Walter awoke in the recliner and rushed to Sam’s side. Sam recounted the dream to Walter, who listened intently. When he had finished, Walter said to him, “Sam, sometimes a person’s soul is not about perfection. It’s about a plan, a continuation. It’s about the journey we must all travel. Charlie knew you hadn’t finished that journey and he was there to make sure you could. “Just before you woke me, I had a dream about Ethel. She seemed so real, like she was right here with me. She still had those piercing blue eyes. Ethel was in our bedroom packing my big suitcase. She always liked to travel when we were young. We’d go anywhere at the drop of a hat. She folded my good Sunday suit laying it on top with my fancy tie, and looked at me saying, ‘Walter, you have your hair.’ “She just kept repeating it, ‘Your hair, Walter, you have your hair. You don’t need to keep looking.’” Walter ran his long bony fingers through his long white hair as if mimicking what he was trying to understand. “But to be honest with you, I didn’t understand what she meant. I didn’t have a clue. Why would Ethel care anything about my hair. It just didn’t make any sense to me. “She spoke to me one last time, ‘Walter, you have your heir.’ That’s when I finally understood.” A loud snore interrupted the flow of Walter’s conversation putting an end to his speech. Sleep had once again overtaken the exhausted soldier sending him back into a deep slumber state. But Walter knew. He knew he had the responsible person he needed and he knew the suitcase was Ethel’s way of readying him for his final journey. The room was quiet, amazingly so. The embers in the fireplace had long since lost their glow; their crackle gone with the night. The morning sun pierced the darkness of Captain Sam’s sleep. He awoke with a start. Mischief had her snout on the edge of the sofa, looking up at him as if waiting for him to wake. Walter was sitting upright in the old recliner seemingly asleep. Only now, his head was leaning to one side. Sadly, Sam knew Walter had left him sometime during the early morning hours. He had gone to join Ethel. He covered the old man with the wool blanket from the sofa. As he looked toward the mantel, a piece of paper sticking out of one of the

Christmas stockings caught his eye. It was an envelope with his name on it: SAMUEL CLARK SHEFFIELD. TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: ON THIS CHIRSTMAS EVE NIGHT, I, WALTER DAVID MACAFEE, BEING OF SOUND MIND DO HEREBY DECLARE THIS TO BE MY LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT. I LEAVE ALL OF MY WORLDLY POSSESSIONS (INCLUDING MY HOUSE AND ITS CONTENTS) TO CAPTAIN SAMUEL CLARK SHEFFIELD. I ALSO BEQUEATH TO HIM MY DOG AND BEST FRIEND, MISCHIEF. HE MUST KEEP MISCHIEF SAFE FROM ALL HARM AND MUST SHOW HER THE UNCONDITIONAL LOVE AND RESPECT THAT SHE WILL SHOW HIM. RESPECTFULLY, WALTER DAVID MACAFEE Underneath was a second sheet of paper with the very same distinctive handwriting. To my new found friend, “Sam,in the few hours I have spent with you, you have proven to me that you are a caring and loving human being, and I am trusting in my heart that what I am now doing is right for everyone concerned. “Also, I have included a note to Father James Martino to help you obtain suitable employment. I am not now nor have I ever been a preacher or philosopher. I’ve just been around the block a few hundred times more than most. “Life has its moments—moments that make us laugh, moments that make us cry, and moments when we come together to help one another. My home is now your home—unconditional love resides within. It is where your new journey begins. Make some new memories. “Be good to Mischief—the love of a dog knows no boundaries. Search for the good in people, the beauty of places, and the true value of things. You have a long road ahead, my friend. Please drive carefully.” Sam’s tears stained the folded sheet of paper as Mischief looked up at him. “Finally Sam, my brave boy, thank you for your service.” Then Mischief barked and held out her right front paw to Sam—and to another person in the room only she could see. came to GSRA when, due to unforeseen life changing circumstances, his family was no longer able to care for him. He is the perfect elderly gentleman, as long as cats are not around. Duke loves to go for car rides, play with squeaky toys, chase the spots flashlights make and the company of other dogs. He has not had much command training but is very food motivated and wants to do nothing more than please his people. Please visit www.gsdrescue.org for more information. n

Digger

is a 1 year old Pug-Jack Russell Terrier mix named after the basketball coach. He was found as a stray in rural NC and brought to a local shelter. His owner never came forward to claim him. Upon arriving to the rescue, Digger was neutered and microchipped. He is heartworm negative and up-to-date on vaccinations. Digger is loving and Finding Great Homes kind and has a heart of gold and for Jack Russell Terriers a warm, outgoing and friendly personality. He is wonderful with other dogs and small children and is crate-trained, leash-trained and house-trained. Digger’s adoption fee is $350, plus $10.99 to register his microchip into his new owner’s name for life. To give Digger a great home, contact Robin at 336-414-1373 or Robin@insightrecruiters.com. n

Pete is a beautiful dog in need of a loving home with another balanced dog, or no dog. He is sweet, loving and enjoys getting his silky smooth coat groomed. Pete warms up to you quickly but his manners need work. He is currently in training for basic obedience commands and is learning quickly. He will react to any aggressive dog so would do best in a home Triad Golden Retriever Rescue with a large fenced yard and someone who has time to work with him. Please consider fostering to help Pete or, even better, adopting.

Tarheel Weimrescue

Jersey is a 9-year-old girl looking for a forever home! Jersey came to Tarheel Weim Rescue with emotional and medical needs after a car accident several months prior. This has left her blind in one eye. Jersey is sweet and well-mannered, but nervous and needs a calm and supportive home to give her the best final years of her life. She prefers a home with females and no children. All she needs to make her life complete is a home for the holidays!

If you are interested or would like more information, please go to our website at www.tarheelweimrescue.org to apply today. n

Angel came to us recently from a good home, but sadly that home experienced hard times financially, complicated by divorce, and concessions have had to be made. She loves company, easily enters Doberman Rescue of the Triad and exits the SUV, and is very strong on leash. She loves car rides, gets along with other dogs, and is OK with children, too. In short, she’s a beautiful girl with a sweet personality who probably won’t take a moment to adjust to her new home. She’s just full of love and good will and will be thrilled to be in a new home and routine as soon as possible. Read more about Angel at www.doberman-rescue.com. Make an appointment to meet her after your application has been approved. n
