Patriot Rovers - What We Do Patriot Rovers is a nonprofit 501(c)3 that provides canine therapy using trained Psychiatric Service Dogs for military veterans who suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and/or Traumatic Brain Injury.
The program is free for veterans. This training is vital in order to ensure the dog is fit and ready to perform all assistance required of a Psychiatric Service Dog. We train all dogs to perform specific tasks under the American with Disabilities Act (ADA). These tasks include, but are not limited to, brace, get help, lights, doors, pull, dress, retrieve, reverse – all standard service dog tasks. Additional Psychiatric Service Dog tasks include medical alert and response, tactile stimulation, alerting, interrupting, stabilizing, calming, waking, initiate activity, initiate interpersonal interaction, and the creation of personal space. Additional non-task functions include providing a veteran with constant 24-hour reassuring, unconditional love and companionship.

Training Your Pet
A Canine House Guest for the Holidays by Jan Wilson, Dog-Gone Fun Dog Daycare & Training
C
hristmas is a time for friends and family to get together and celebrate. If you plan on bringing your dog with you to celebrate out of town, it is wise to plan ahead and think it through. The experience can be a great one, or a disaster. I have put together some tips from experience and stories I have been told by clients.
Is this the right situation to bring your dog? There are some questions to ask your hosts and yourself, before bringing your dog into their home. 1) Is everyone comfortable with your dog accompanying you? 2) Is anyone allergic to dogs within the household? 3) If there is a dog living in the household, will both dogs be comfortable with the arrangement? It is important to consider the size and age of both dogs. For example, Grandma’s Maltese may be stressed when you bring your 6 month old Lab into the picture. 4) Will you be able to relax and enjoy the holiday?
Dog to Dog Introductions How you introduce your dog to a dog who lives within the household is important. Both dogs must have the space to move away if they are uncomfortable. The resident dog should not feel like he must be protective. The method of introduction depends on the size, age and behavior of both dogs. Bringing any dog straight through the front door to meet a resident dog is not a good idea. Even the best of dogs will be surprised at the intrusion and become territorial. One method for most well-mannered dogs would be to bring both on a leashed walk. This gives both dogs a chance to check each other out in a low-pressure environment. Dogs that are social may do well greeting in the backyard. For the initial greeting in a fenced area, drop the leashes and let the dogs interact naturally. Restraining the dogs on a leash causes unnatural body language leading to tension in both dogs. Make sure that the introduction is supervised and watch for signs of anxiety in both dogs. Common signs of anxiety include excessive panting, shaking, drooling, trying to hide or crouching low to the ground. If either dog is anxious, a slower introduction or separation may be needed.
go a long way in keeping the visit incident free 1) Food is a big part of the holidays. Having access to dog food in a common area is impossible in this situation. They should not be fed together and after feeding time is over, pick up their bowls so no one gets possessive. During human mealtimes and party buffets, the dogs should be watched closely and prevented from sitting under the food tables. This a highly valued spot in a dog’s opinion. 2) Have a separate sleeping area for your dog. A crate is ideal. In the very least have a separate room, where your dog can relax. As long as the weather cooperates, some dogs could even be comfortable taking a nap in your car. It is familiar and quiet and they can be certain you will not leave without them. Never leave the dogs unsupervised together and leave the house. Why take the chance of a disagreement? 3) The best time to let your dog play with his holiday toys is when he is in his crate or when you get home. Try to spend some alone time with your dog each day with an activity he enjoys and he will burn off some nervous energy. A few vigorous walks and a game of fetch may be what you both need to help manage family and the holidays. Be respectful in your host’s home and make sure you and your dog are good guests. Keep your dog well-groomed and clean during your stay. Make sure you pick up after them in the yard. Leaving your environment cleaner than when you arrive is always a good rule of thumb. With any luck your dog could be welcome back next year and it can become a tradition.

PET INSURANCE MYTHS DEBUNKED! The following are actual statements made by local pet owners regarding pet insurance.
Myth #1: All pet insurance carriers are the same. There are currently 16 pet insurance carriers in the United States and all of them differ based upon their quality of service, monthly premiums, reimbursement percentages, deductibles, and payout limits. The best advice would be to take time to research each of the pet insurance carriers and compare them to one another. The most helpful and user friendly web resource that we have found is www.petinsurancereview.com. This website will help you find the right pet insurance for you and your pet through quick and easy comparative sheets and tools.
Myth #2: I do not need pet insurance because I have no problem paying for general pet care. Pet insurance is not designed to cover general and wellness care, which can be budgeted for. It is intended to be used for unexpected pet health issues, such as illnesses or accidents. For example, a pet that was seriously injured after being hit by a car may require extensive medical care, surgery, and days of hospitalization. The total cost of care can be significant (thousands of dollars). Wouldn’t it be easier to make the decision to treat your pet if you knew you would be getting up to 90% of your money back?
Myth #3: My pet is indoors only, so I would never have the need for emergency services or pet insurance. The majority of patients seen for illnesses or accidents spend most of their time indoors with their owners. Indoor pets still chew up toys and ingest inappropriate items, get into the trash, receive table scraps, ingest human medications, suffer traumatic injuries, develop systemic disease
10
December 2017 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails
(i.e. kidney disease, heart disease, cancer), and so on. The medical care required to treat all of these problems and many others would be covered by pet insurance.
Myth #4: My pet is 10 years old. He is too old to qualify for pet insurance. Most pet insurance carriers have plans for senior pets, as long as they are enrolled before 14 years of age. While pet insurance often excludes pre-existing conditions, there are many senior pet health issues that would still be covered by pet insurance.
Myth #5: I have a Great Dane. Because of his breed, he is predisposed to bloat and would not be approved for coverage by pet insurance carriers. Pet insurance companies do not exclude specific breeds from being covered. However, they often exclude coverage for specific conditions that are high risk in certain breeds (i.e. bloat in Great Danes). These specific medical exclusions vary between pet insurance companies. This should not stop you from getting pet insurance for your Great Dane. Since there are so many other health issues that can occur with any pet, their breed or certain excluded conditions should not keep you from getting pet insurance.
Myth #6: I have a Dachshund that had back surgery or a Labrador who had knee surgery, so he would not be eligible for pet insurance. In both of these cases, the problems arose and the surgeries were performed prior to the owner applying for pet insurance. Therefore, these specific problems would be considered pre-existing conditions and would not be covered under any pet insurance policy. However, there are numerous other health issues that would be covered by the pet insurance including: vomiting, diarrhea, allergic reactions, traumatic injuries, heart disease, and kidney disease, just to name a few. Preexisting conditions should not stop you from getting pet insurance.
Myth #7: My cat has had urinary issues before, so he would not be eligible for pet insurance. Like the Dachshund and the Labrador in the previous example, this cat would not be covered for any medical issues relating to his urinary tract problems because they would be considered a pre-existing condition. However, other health issues that he might develop would be covered. Examples of such potential problems include: a corneal scratch; bite wounds; abscesses; vomiting caused by eating a toxic indoor plant; or foreign body surgery. There are many more medical problems that would also be covered by pet insurance. With all veterinarians accepting pet insurance and the realization that up to 90% of your unexpected veterinary bills for your sick or injured pet could be covered, what are you waiting for? By having your pet covered by pet insurance, you will be able to give them the necessary medical care without worrying about the cost. Remember to visit the website www.petinsurancereview.com to compare all the pet insurance carriers. If you are looking for a suggestion, we frequently recommend Trupanion Pet Insurance. Visit www.Trupanion.com for more details or call (855) 591-3103 to take advantage of their free 30-day trial.

ove doesn’t come to us in a box; it doesn’t come in a greeting card; real love comes in softly on four paws. In my heart I know that no dog deserves to be forgotten, especially not this one. But sometimes it saddens me during the holidays when I pass by our living room. I view our stately Christmas tree standing tall in the corner and immediately think about the dog. There, draped up at the top just under the glowing star, is the dog’s collar. That’s where it is every year, and where my grandson, Andy, says it has to be. The attached red leash winds its way down and around the dark green branches. This woven cord was not a means of restraint, but rather a bond of friendship that would remain with me long after that friend was gone. So very enduring is this camaraderie that my eyes often tear up when it comes to mind. She wasn’t just a dog: she was family. As we all know, everything is about family: helping one another to succeed, or just being around when the need arises. This dog possessed all these traits and more. The pine fragrance that permeates the room reminds me of that day in the woods, that day coming back from camping. It was the day we found her, or, more likely, she found us. We were driving home through the woodland campgrounds where we had had a family picnic. My wife, Margaret, shouted, “Frank, stop the car! There’s something underneath the picnic table by that tree over there. Stop the car!” As our vehicle got closer I could just make out two smaller-sized dogs underneath: a black one who appeared to be lying down and a rust-colored dog standing watch. I got out of the car and slowly approached the dogs, not wanting to scare them off. It was then that I realized that the black dog had passed away and the other dog had her paws on him refusing to leave his side. Carefully, I sat down on the picnic bench trying not to alarm the dog. I slowly reached down and petted the rust-colored dog on the head while talking to her and explaining that it was okay. The more I

petted her, the more she looked up at me with those mournful eyes. I could see and feel her pain. She jumped up on the seat next to me, and I could tell she wanted to be closer. The dog wanted her fear removed. She wanted someone to comfort her over the loss of her best friend. So I put my arms around her while reassuring her that everything would be okay. As I held her, I started to cry. I looked back at my wife. “Marge, is there any food left in the cooler? Anything I can give a dog?” She looked at me with that sparkling twinkle in her eyes that I had grown to know and love: something I had seen over and over again during our many years of marriage. “There’s Jell-o ,” she replied. I looked back at her not really believing what I was hearing. I waited. I knew full well what was about to come next. I waited for her to say it. She always did, without fail. She knew I hated it, and yet, she always, always said it. I waited. “There’s always.” It was coming. I just knew it was. Plus Marge knew I hated Jell-o. I had always hated it. Still, it was always in the fridge without fail. You’d think after 32 years it would stop. But no, it continued; only the flavors changed. And there were a gazillion. But Marge proved me wrong that day. She said something that literally amazed me. “We could name her Jello. She would make a great companion to Domino; he needs a friend, and a girlfriend would be even nicer.” Domino was our Sheltie-mix. We both thought that he would like a new friend in his life. And we knew that he got along well with other dogs. I took the small emergency shovel I always kept in the trunk of the car, and dug a small hole next to the tree. We buried Jello’s companion. We then coaxed her into the car, and we headed toward her new home. Thus began our kinship. We first knew that Jello was a “special” dog when we caught her in our grandson’s crib. Our daughter, Mandy, had just given birth to our first grandson, Andy. She had come to live with us while her husband, Michael, a marine, served overseas. We had come back inside from visiting our vegetable garden, and Mandy had gone into the nursery to check on her newborn. There, she witnessed a truly remarkable sight. Our dog, Jello, was in Andy’s crib, lying on top of him, almost as if she was holding him down. “Mom, Dad,” Mandy called out from the bedroom. She was alarmed, but somehow knew that the dog was not trying to hurt the baby. Our grandson, Andy, began a slight shaking motion, the beginning of an epileptic seizure. The doctor later explained to us that our grandson was giving off an “aura” (actually, electrical impulses) prior to having his seizure. The dog, sensing this, was holding Andy in an attempt to lessen the severity of the seizure. Our dog, Jello, was a natural born service dog. The doctors thought the dog was a medical oddity. But a dog trainer told us that some canine senses are more highly developed than those of humans. Jello was just following her instincts to save her “little brother.” Every year her acuity improved. My daughter and my grandson lived with us for many years during her husband’s deployment. The dog and my grandson became one. Andy was always prepared with his medicine when Jello sprang into action. He knew that she was never wrong, and his pills provided a safe and secure measure to deal with a mild seizure. Jello was almost always with Andy—always. But during moments that she felt safe leaving him, she would come over to me. She never
forgot being rescued, and, whenever possible, conveyed her love for us. Time took its toll on us all. We went through life together each day getting older, and each day slowing down a little more. Andy had gotten a new service dog. Of course, Jello remained living with us. At night she always slept in Andy’s bed. And as she got older, I would lift her into her sleeping spot. She always licked my hand, every time, every night, as a way of saying thank you. One morning when I had slept past my usual time, I heard Marge calling my name from down the hall. “Frank, Frank, come here please. Hurry, please.” She sounded upset, and I wondered to myself what could be wrong. Marge pointed into Andy’s bedroom. Tears were streaming down her face making me afraid to look. But I did. Jello was curled up on Andy’s pillow as she had done for so very many years. But everything was still. She did not look up; she did not move. She had left us during the night. I couldn’t look back at Marge; the tears just wouldn’t let me. We wrapped Jello in Andy’s bedsheet. We drove her out to the tree where we had buried her good friend so many years ago. We knew that if she couldn’t be with us, she would want to be with her first best friend. Marge cried a lot that day; withholding tears was not an option. As I stood there staring at the Christmas tree, I sensed Marge coming up behind me. She wasn’t trying to be sneaky; rather, she was respecting my space. She knew I was thinking about the dog, and she knew how upset I always got. Remembering always took its toll on us both. My thoughts were always projected on my sleeve; I could not hide them. Marge put one of her hands on my waist, and the other hand on my shoulder. I knew she missed Jello as much as I did, maybe even more. And I also knew that she would never admit that to me. Jello had been a wonderful dog, for sixteen years a great friend. She had been a blessing for my grandson, and I couldn’t have asked for much more. Sometimes I wondered if I ever really explained to this dog just how much she meant to me and to us or just how glad I was to have had her in my life. But I never realized at the time while rescuing her that her love would be returned to us so many times over. Marge leaned into me, hugging me as she whispered in my ear, “Merry Christmas, Frank.” I turned while saying, “Merry Christmas, Marge.” Looking back at me with her eyes twinkling she replied, “And Frank, there’ll always be room for Jello.”

Vet’s Corner Katherine Wallace, DVM King’s Crossing Animal Hospital Dr. Katherine Wallace received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Health Science from Guilford College in 2011, and a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Ohio State University in 2017. She is very excited to join King’s Crossing Animal Hospital as she previously worked for years with Dr. Fuller before entering veterinary school to pursue her lifelong dream. Dr. Wallace is committed to providing outstanding care to her patients and their families, and is particularly interested in pain management and end-of-life care. In her spare time, she enjoys hiking, playing doubles tennis and spending time with her husband BJ, their dog Indie and their cat Hobbes.
THE WOES OF AGING… Managing Arthritis SHOULD I BE CONCERNED? Does this sound familiar? Fluffy has a hard time getting up in the morning or moving around after long naps. She used to love to take five-mile hikes and now seems to get stiff or sore after a onemile trot. Maybe you have noticed that she plays less and naps more. Sometimes, she may be reluctant to go up and down stairs or has difficulty getting into the car. You may wonder, “Is my pet feeling a lot of pain, or is this a normal change associated with aging? Could this be arthritis?” It can be difficult to determine how much pain our pet is experiencing. Your veterinarian is the best person to evaluate your pet for arthritis and to steer you to the right treatment to help keep Fluffy moving and grooving for as long as possible. WHAT IS ARTHRITIS? Arthritis is a painful joint disease that tends to worsen over time, and it can affect both dogs and cats. Arthritis can affect any or multiple joints such as the knees, elbows, hips, shoulder or back. As the bodies of our pets age, normal wear and tear can damage parts of the joints. Deterioration of joints also can be hastened by obesity, previous injury, or other orthopedic conditions. This deterioration results in inflammation and eventually pain. You may see this expressed in your pet as slower movement, stiffness, decreased activity, or in severe cases, limping.
WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS ONCE MY PET IS DIAGNOSED WITH ARTHRITIS? Most owners have heard about prescription pills that help with arthritis-associated pain. However, many people don’t realize there are other good options that may work for your pet. Not every dog and cat is the same. Below are some options that you may want to discuss with your veterinarian. LASER THERAPY Laser therapy is a therapeutic treatment that uses light energy to reduce inflammation and block pain. Laser therapy does not take a lot of time, and there is no heat, redness or swelling during or after the treatment. Most owners notice positive results after one to three treatments. Chronic conditions such as arthritis can be controlled or improved with regular laser therapy sessions. ASSISI LOOP The Assisi Loop is a device that uses low-level pulses of electromagnetic energy to help improve pain, increase mobility, reduce swelling, and decrease the need for pain medication in an animal with arthritis. It is a loop that you put around the area of pain and leave on for 15 minutes. The Assisi Loop can be used at your home and works well in combination with other arthritis treatments or on its own. SUPPLEMENTS Supplements, including Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate (Dasuquin, Cosequin), Adequan injections, Omega fatty acids (fish oil), and Vitamin E help lubricate your pet’s joints and thus protect the joint cartilage from further wear-and-tear. Studies show these supplements also may provide a slight antiinflammatory benefit. Overall, these products won’t hurt your pet and are a good addition to other arthritic therapies. ANTI-INFLAMMATORY MEDICATIONS Anti-inflammatory medications, specifically NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications), are commonly prescribed for arthritic pets because they have the most consistent noticeable beneficial effects. You may have heard of these products (Rimadyl, Metacam, Previcox, Deramaxx), which work by reducing swelling, stiffness, and joint pain. It is important for your pet to have routine blood work done while on these medications because potential long-term side effects can include stomach ulcers, and liver and kidney problems. There is a new anti-inflammatory medication on the market called Galliprant which may be associated with less severe side effects. Don’t forget, any extra weight on your pet can worsen arthritis pain. Always talk with your veterinarian to make a plan that is right for you and your pet.
HOW IS ARTHRITIS DIAGNOSED? Your veterinarian starts by taking a detailed medical history and then performing a thorough examination. Sometimes blood tests 7607 NC Hwy 68 N., St. E, Oak Ridge and other diagnostics such as X-rays are recommended to diagnose 336-644-7606, www.kingscrossinganimalhospital.com arthritis and to rule out other diseases and orthopedic conditions.

LOVING PET INN ADOPTIONS 336.393.0000 / www.lovingpetinnadoptions.org
Sophie
Scout
is a darling low shedding pup who is about 7-8 years old and 11 pounds. She was dumped at a shelter, matted and dirty, with a huge bladder stone and bladder infection, poor girl! We took her in and promptly had the stone surgically removed, treated the infection, and gave her a hair cut and she is doing great! She is very friendly, loving, snuggly, and such a doll. She is good with other little dogs and loves going for walks on the leash. She still needs a frequent potty schedule and needs a new owner who is home a lot since she adores people and gets lonely. Adoption donation $150.
is a very handsome 71 pound pup, probably around 3 years old, who looks like a yellow Lab or mix. He is healthy and fit, with strong muscles and a thick coat. He bonds quickly and highly values his family and friends. He has lots of energy and needs an active family that will provide the physical and mental stimulation that he craves as well as structure. He does well with older children. He does need more leash manners training. Scout likes some dogs but not others so would be best as an only dog. He already knows how to sit and army crawl, and he is housetrained and crate-trained. Adoption donation $175.

Pixie.
Clancy
Darling little Pixie is a sweet 6 pound, 7 year old Chihuahua who was found at a trash dump. Pixie was just spayed and had a dental cleaning, too, with only 4 teeth removed so she is in great shape and ready to come home with you. She is a spry Chihuahua and appears to be healthy. She is a sweet, friendly little girl who cherishes lap time and being close to her people. She is great on the leash and keeps her room perfectly clean. She is fine around other little dogs. Adoption donation $150.
was adopted from a shelter as a 5 month old puppy but now, at 1 year old, he finds himself homeless again since his human mom got cancer. He is 45 pounds of bouncy puppy and looks like an Aussie mix. His multi-hued fur is very silky and lovely, wonderful to stroke. He is very friendly and affectionate and loves to play, especially fetch. Since Clancy is still really just a puppy and has a LOT of energy, true to his breed mix, he will need an active new family that can give him plenty of exercise, adventures and mental stimulation. He may be best as an only dog. Adoption donation $175.

Ashley
Bambi.
is a cuteas-a-button 7-8 month old kitten who was found as a stray but appears to have been well cared for. She is happy, sociable and sweet as can be! Her gorgeous fur with unique markings is soft and full. She loves attention and is friendly to everyone. She has a gentle, pleasing confidence. Ashley makes great eye contact and is a communicator, letting you know when you make her happy, which is pretty easy. Adoption donation $40.
Well, if you like your Chihuahuas super snuggly and loving, Bambi wants to meet you! She is about 18 months old and 8 pounds. She and her 4 month old look-alike puppy were found as strays. Bambi is submissive natured with people and a friendly girl. She loves being touched and cuddled and bonds quickly. She loves to go for leash walks. She has been fine with the other dogs here but would probably love to be your one and only since she adores attention. She is fine with well mannered children. She keeps her room spotlessly clean, no accidents. Adoption donation $175.

Three year old Zara (Boxer-Lab mix) came to our shelter with her four puppies, but Zara did not qualify for adoptions due to testing positive for heartworm disease (she was also emaciated and very sick). RED DOG FARM ANIMAL RESCUE NETWORK www.reddogfarm.com
Autumn
is brand new to Red Dog Farm. She is a young Dachshund, possibly mixed with Chihuahua, that was recently pulled from a local shelter. So far she is good with other dogs, kids and interested in cats! Autumn is a very sweet girl and is learning all of her doggie manners well. Visit www.reddogfarm.com for more information or to apply to adopt her today. n
Sully
came to RDF when his owner started grad school and realized she did not have the time he deserved. He is now here to find his forever home! So far Sully’s foster reports that he is house-trained, knows basic commands, has a good energy level and loves to play fetch! He also is good with other dogs, tested well with cats and has been good around chickens. He is working on his crate-training and better leashwalking skills. Since he does have a good energy level, he will need a home willing to exercise and go on walks regularly. He would do very well with a family with a fenced yard (although not required). Sully is very sweet boy and we love his tan “freckles” on his fur! If you are interested in adopting this fun, loving boy, please visit www.reddogfarm.com. n
Snowflake
Ollie.
This kitty is such a sweetheart! Ollie came to RDF after he was found outside by a very concerned woman who wanted to make sure he got the care he needed. He needed some treatment for severe allergies when he first came in. He had a bad reaction to bug and fly bites. He is now feeling a lot better! Ollie does well with the dog and other small furry critters in his foster home. We will be requiring an indoor home for this chill dude only because of his allergies that seem to be aggravated when he was outside. Ollie is a great cat who loves to be loved on and likes to “talk” to his humans! If you are interested in adopting Ollie, please apply online at www.reddogfarm.com. n
Benji
is a really sweet, beautiful albino rabbit. She is approximately 5-7 pounds. She is working on litter box training currently, which is going really well. She loves to sit on your lap or hop about the room. This sweet girl even likes to go for little walks on her harness outside. Learn more or apply to adopt Snowflake at www.reddogfarm.com. n
Jane
has made the transition from house pig to farm pig with no problem. He LOVES the mud hole and was introduced to the other pigs at his foster home with no problem. Benji is now living with Hamlet the piggy and they are the cutest two piggies together!! These boys are still young and growing, both are now about a year old. They have gone to a few of our recent adoption events and are becoming quite the pair.
is one of the sweetest horses we have had the honor of spending some time with. She is a 20 year old roan mare that is a registered Paint Horse. Jane is doing great in her foster home and her foster mom reports she continues to be a very sweet mare. She is not sound enough for riding due to arthritis in her front knees. She is sound at the walk but not at any faster of a pace. Jane will be best suited to be adopted as a companion animal and could be used for small children as a lead line horse. She is current on her shots and has a current coggins. Due to Jane’s lameness her adoption fee will be waived to the perfect home.

Buffy is a lovely, sweet kitty. She was a great mother to four babies, all were adopted. Buffy has been in a room with another great cat, but they are not the best of friends. Given some patience and a little time to adjust, she’ll make a nice addition to a home. She has a little bit of mischief to her nature, but that makes her interesting! Popeye. Hi my name is Popeye, I am a 10 year old fawn male Pug but my foster home thinks I look much younger in the face. I guess I am aging well. I was just rescued from a NC shelter when my owner decided they could no longer afford a dog. I am good with the other Pugs in rescue but unsure about cats. Pug Rescue of NC I do have limited vision and need eye drops. I was covered in fleas so glad they are all gone now. I am sure my skin and hair will do better now. He’s under 2 years old, good with kids, cats and other dogs. Adoption donation $200. All vetting is up-to-date, he’s microchipped, neutered and on flea/tick and heartworm preventative. CJ is a special Shih Tzu who will bring as much love to her adopter’s life as they will to hers. CJ is 9 lbs. and around 10 years old. She was dumped at a shelter looking pretty ragged, in desperate need of a groom and medical care. CJ has had comprehensive veterinary care including a dental cleaning and teeth extractions, bloodwork and cardiac evaluation. CJ is affectionate, happy and craves attention but doesn’t really want to share it with Hart-2-Heart Rescue other dogs, but she is fine with cats. CJ has a heart murmur, but NO heart enlargement so she does NOT need medication at this time but will need monitoring. She has some mobility limitations due to patella luxation (not surgically repairable) but can get around fine. CJ is spayed, current on shots, heartworm tested and on heartworm prevention. Her adoption fee is $300. Visit www.hart2heartrescue.petfinder.com to learn more about CJ and our other dogs or email h2hadoptions@gmail.com. n

Paul Meadow.
Hi. My name is Paul. I was abandoned when I was born so I was bottle-fed by a nice lady at AARF along with my siblings. I am a very adventurous boy. I was the first one to leave the nursery and explore the rest of the house. I get along with everybody and have never met a stranger. I love to run through the house, playing with the other kittens, then settle down for a nap in the sun. DOB: 6/22/2017. Blossom
(born 05/2017) Female, DSH. She wears a unique, striking black and white patterned coat with a large black button on her white chest, and her heart-melting smile and twinkling green eyes. Cookie is in awe of older, larger cats, but is unafraid to initiate a contest. She is happy to scamper about independently, or play with others. Cookie talks to her human, and will watch in anticipation of a reply. She adores positive interaction with her human and kitty counterparts.
is a funny girl!! When you look at her she looks like Grumpy Cat because she has no eyebrows!! Of course she sees no humor in that! Blossom came from an overcrowded environment and has already had babies. She was severely neglected and is so happy to be in a place where she is loved and fed well. She has a funny personality and is definitely a lap cat. After she is fed she likes to clean out the wet food can and get it all over her face. Too cute!! Blossom is spayed and current on all vaccinations.

is nothing like her role at the Hogwarts School who was sorted into Slytherin House. Heck, she really doesn’t like snakes, so forget the Slytherins. After bailing on “snaky people”, she hitched a ride across the big pond and ended up at our shelter. Now she’s ready to work her good magic on a nice person/ family who will take her home for the holidays. Pansy is a sweet, three year old hound, mostly brown and full of love. To meet Pansy stop by the shelter and ask for #A367192 or go online and see her bio on our website. n

Lucy, (TGRR #171033) is a seven year old, 85 lb. Golden Retriever mix with a loving personality. She prefers a calm environment and would do best as an only dog. Energetic kids make Lucy anxious so we feel she needs a family without kids. She needs to lose some weight and would benefit from long walks and regular exercise, in addition to a healthy diet. Lucy is learning to walk Triad Golden Retriever Rescue on a leash but pulls in her excitement to explore. She’s playful, sweet and a champion cuddler. Koda
is a handsome 8 years young man who is hoping and praying that Santa will help him find his new special person. He is a well-mannered boy who would enjoy a nice walk each day, a fenced yard to sniff around in and a spot on the sofa to snuggle up next to you. Champ may have some hearing impairment, but it won’t keep him from being a great companion for a lucky person. He is neutered, current on vaccines and ready to go!

Groucho,
Arabella.
#2536, is a beautiful male black and white kitten with the cutest mustache. When he first came to HSAC, he was very shy, scared and uncertain when his next meal would be. Today, he is a normal kitten who is just as happy playing as he is cuddling up on the couch with humans and other pets. He is confident and will purr his heart out for an ear or chin rub. He is dog and cat friendly. Overall, he has a pretty laid back personality and is always the last one to walk in at feeding time. He will do well in any home who will show him the love and affection he deserves.
Confident, sweet, petite, energetic and independent are a few words that describe Arabella (#2534). She’s not fond of being held for long, she has things to do. Whether it’s playing with toys, other pets or exploring her surroundings, she’s busy. She is pretty chatty while you are getting her food ready. When the end of the evening comes, she’s content to curl up on your lap or next to you on the couch, at least for a bit. At bedtime, she’ll cuddle up on the bed but not before a little playtime with your toes. She is dog and cat friendly and will do well in any home.

Onyx,
#2559, is a young kitten who loves to play with his brothers, Storm and Midnight, but also values his independence. He enjoys a good game of laser tag followed by a good nap taken in his cat tower. He is smart, very social and appreciates a treat now and then as a reward. Onyx loves to cuddle with his favorite humans, especially those of the younger variety, ready and willing to shower him with love. Call 336-438-2023, visit www.hsaconline.org or send an email to hsacinfo@gmail.com for more information. n
Bruce. Hello, World! My name is
Coral.
My name is Coral (#2547) and I am a sweet bundle of fun! I so love belly rubs and love to play in water: a ditch full of water after the rain is no match for me! I am a very smart girl who will sit for meals and treats. I am learning to walk nicely on leash and my foster mom says I’m getting better every day! I get along with other dogs after proper introductions are made and kids love to spend time with me. Where, oh, where is my forever family? Don’t they realize that I’ve been waiting for them to scoop me up and take me home? Photo courtesy of Angie V Photos. Call 336-438-2023, visit www.hsaconline.org or send an email to hsacinfo@gmail.com for more information. n
Jacques,
Handsome Bruce (#2548) and I am an amazing boy who loves to socialize and get everyone energized! I am super duper smart, athletic and learn things very quickly, especially when treats are involved. I love to run and jump! I’m learning to walk nicely on leash and get along well with other dogs. I would probably do well with cats as well since I seem to be curious but accepting of them. Kids absolutely love spending time with me and watching me show off my tricks! I’d love to find a forever home soon, with a nice fenced in yard for me to run and play in and a family that will spoil me rotten and love me unconditionally. Are you the family for me?
#2545, is a sweet and thoughtful boy who is quite content to lean or snuggle into your side while watching his siblings roughhouse together. He will reciprocate when the moment strikes him but much prefers to be a spectator within the loving embrace of his favorite human. He is very, very smart and catches on to tricks pretty quickly with his ability to focus. He is housebroken, crate-trained and gets along well with other dogs. Jacques has also spent quite a bit of time with children and has done beautifully. He really is the perfect package! Photo courtesy of Angie V Photos.

Sammy’s Story
W
inter is here and the days grow shorter in so many ways. December 10, 2013 marked the passing of our beloved Sammy. It’s cold in Syracuse, New York, and the snow comes early covering the ground and trees with a chilly white blanket. Not a good place to live outside. Sammy found himself at the SPCA again for the second time. The tender age of one found him back at a shelter with no time left. His previous adoptions had failed and he was literally at the end of the line. My Judy had been volunteering at the rescue, but had not planned on going by that day. On a whim, she stopped in to see if she could help. She walked in and was immediately smitten. Barely three pounds, but with soulful eyes and floppy ears, he was there. She swept him up and brought him home. Fate had intervened and we had a new family member, small in statue but blessed with an extraordinary personality! His emotions were always on display. We all have our ways of expression, but his were in those incredible ears! Those were oversized, always channeling, letting anyone know how he felt. The first few years were trying, as he brought memories of the scars he bore from his previous abuse. It was hard for him to trust again. Being rejected leaves its mark and he struggled so hard to open his huge heart and let someone come in and give him the love he so richly deserved. The seasons passed and with the turning of the world, he began to believe again. His confidence grew and he became quite proud of himself. We saw it every day in his prancing, which became known as his “Happy Walk”. His emotions were freely given, our boy was learning what love really means and we were learning too! One of the most endearing habits Sammy had was to get our attention while we were watching TV. The tiny little feet would tip toe up our chest and gently position himself two inches from our faces, staring directly into our eyes. If this ploy failed to rouse us, he became more creative. Next he would give us “nose kisses” pressing his moist little button nose into our noses as to His ears always betrayed his feelings. Try as he might, he never could will them to stand up straight. Emotions were transmitted through those oversized antennae. The tops of his ears flopped over, giving him a comical appearance. Before long he picked up the nickname “Sugarface” that somehow conveyed that adorable, bedeviling personality.
by Jim Stratton
All he knew of people was hurt and rejection. Judy’s unwavering love allowed Sammy to believe again, and thrive in our home.
say, “Hey, I’m here you know!” Finally if all failed to get some reaction, he pulled out all the stops. Then came the irresistible, “nose nibbles”, where those tiny teeth gently nibbled on our noses, reducing us to willing victims to his whims. He got his desired result, Pupperonis! Judy and I had become his personal valets, a position we humbly accepted. Sammy had figured out the art of living with the human race. His intelligence with dealing with life had us constantly asking, “Did he just do that?” We have had many dogs, but this one was one in a million. Brilliant was ordinary to Sugarface. Lying on the sand at the beach on a lazy summer day, he would get lost in the moment. His black, shiny nose would be up in the air sniffing and taking in the salty air, floppy ears tuning into the cries of the seagulls. I swear he was loving it as much as we were. That wonderful face expressed a calm joy and contentment, which was his signature way of thanking us for everything. We were constantly thanking him in return for the joy of his essence. The truth is, he made our lives better and we will carry his special spirit in our memories forever. It is our sincere hope that our “Sammy Story” will in some way shed a light on the life changing experience waiting for you at your local animal shelter or rescue group.
Long may you run!
