Letter from the Editors

Welcome to Jennifer Frazier

I

t ’s a magical time of year. No matter what your beliefs, we all should take a cue from nature and enjoy the winter’s respite from the hurried rush of the busy year. Time to reflect on family, friends and times gone by, to savor memories and traditions passed down from previous generations. We are stewards of the earth and it is up to us to protect and preserve all its gifts. We will lose something too valuable to replace if we do not nurture and care for all the animals and plants with whom we share this planet. Please take time to remember those with no homes, the innocents who depend on us to do the right thing. If you can’t adopt, please volunteer or donate to our shelters and rescue groups. These organizations see a huge influx of unwanted animals during and after the holiday season, so they especially need help this time of year. We had a wonderful time at the Bark for Life event last Saturday, November 13. Met some old friends and made some new ones. The Bark for Life website stated there were approximately 250 participants, plus their dogs. The event raised more than $15,000 for the American Cancer Society. Kudos to all who contributed to the fight to save human lives, while experiencing a great outing with their canine friends. We will publish some of our photos in the January issue for all to enjoy.

This is our sixth issue and we can’t believe we have been publishing for half a year! Our generous advertisers make it possible for us to offer free space to around 24 shelters and local rescue groups each month. We cannot stress how much we appreciate our advertisers and their commitment to boosting animal adoption rates in our area. If not for them, we could not offer these pages. Please support them whenever you can. We all have a lot to be thankful for, most of us have plenty to eat, warm lodging, friends and family. Triad Happy Tails Magazine is thankful for all the devoted people we have met over the last months. Many have gone out of their way to educate us as to how the vast rescue support system works. It’s hard to be cynical when you daily witness the love and devotion these men, women and children show towards our fellow creatures. Last but not least, we are thankful for the animals who we have encountered, who freely give back love even after suffering abuse and neglect. We could all learn a lot about forgiveness from them. Our hope is that some day they will all find the peace and happiness they so richly deserve.

Happy Holidays!

Cover Story

NC Cat Adoption Team What Should You Do When You Find a Cat? by Linda Schwoeppe with contributions from Lorraine Marshall and Cindy Parker

N

C Cat Adoption Team is comprised of a small group of volunteers dedicated to improving the lives of cats and kittens. NC Cat rescues cats and kittens from high kill shelters and bad situations and places them in loving homes. Upon intake, each cat or kitten is given medical treatment, flea and tick treatment, de-worming, and nutritional support as indicated by their health status. Spay/neuter surgery, micro-chipping, vaccinations, wellness checks and all necessary veterinary care are provided to every individual cat or kitten. Then every cat and kitten is provided a foster home of safety, love, and socialization until the time of their adoption. Our kitties are “home-ready” for adoption and just waiting for you!

I Found a Cat; Now What? At NC Adoption Team we receive dozens of calls every week from people with this very question. Because different

Mouse 8

situations warrant different actions, we will discuss each individually.

A Cat Came up to My Home; What Do I Do? If the cat is friendly and will allow you to handle it, place it into a carrier and take it to the vet to be scanned for a microchip. Vets will do this at no charge. Hopefully you will be able to reunite it with its owner! If you cannot approach the cat, it is most likely feral. In this instance, you will need a humane trap. These can be borrowed from FCAP (Feral Cat Assistance Program 336-378-0878). The Humane Society (336-299-3999) will spay or neuter the animal and administer a rabies shot for $35.00. If you have it in your heart to feed this animal and give it shelter, you will know that it will not be contributing to the overpopulation that has become such a massive and tragic problem for our society. As soon as you put a plate of food down for a stray cat, you have taken responsibility for it. “If you feed it, fix it.” Please!

You might try sending photos to local rescue groups - please see our website, www.nccat.net, for links. Bear in mind that unless the cat is an exotic or longhaired breed, the likelihood of placement of an adult cat is low. Rescue groups and shelters have difficulty placing adults because there are few families willing to adopt mature cats.

A Pregnant Cat Came to My House; Now What? If the cat is pregnant, it is most important to call us at 336-342-1131 or email us at cats@nccat.net immediately. We can then advise you based on the specifics of the case.

A Cat Had Kittens on My Back Porch; Now What? If it is a feral cat, provide dry and canned kitten food and water for the mama and a safe place for them to stay. As the kittens become ready to wean, they will begin to show interest in the food. When the kittens are 5 weeks old and ready to be weaned, you can then trap the mama cat to

Noel & Elf be spayed (see above). Do not remove the kittens before weaning if possible. If you do, the kittens’ health will be seriously compromised and the mother will go back into heat and will produce more kittens. Try to handle and socialize the kittens as much as possible. If they learn to trust humans they will become more adoptable. At this point, digital photos can be enormously useful- email them to rescue groups who might be able to help with the placement of the kittens. If the mama cat is friendly, it is best to gather her and the kittens and place them in a spare bedroom, bathroom, or other safe place. Be sure to flea treat the mama with a Capstar pill and topical flea treatment (available at veterinary clinics) prior to bringing her in. At 5 weeks of age, the kittens can be turned over to a rescue group and the mama can be spayed. (See above for tips on placing the adult cat.) DO NOT GIVE CATS OR KITTENS COW’S MILK! It will give them diarrhea, which can be fatal.

I Found an Orphaned Kitten(s); Now What? Take the kitten inside to keep it warm and safe. Use a heating pad on low and a blanket or hold it against your body. Being cold will kill a kitten. Also, never feed a cold kitten as this too will kill it. If the kitten is tiny and too small to

eat solid food, you will need to feed it kitten milk replacement formula (available at pet stores or vet offices). Some good information can be found online at www.animalalliancenyc.org/nycfci/infokittensnew.php and www.feralcat.com (click on “raising orphaned kittens”). After bottle feeding, hold the kitten against your heart and gently pat its back to burp it. As young kittens will not eliminate on their own, their bottoms need to be stimulated by gently patting with a moist paper towel. Viva brand is very soft. Again, check the websites listed above for more “How to Tips”. A trip to the vet, if possible, is a good idea. If the kitten is able to eat on its own, provide canned kitten food several times a day and leave out dry kitten kibble and water. A warm, safe spot for it to curl up

is also needed; a trip to the vet will help insure the kitten’s good start in life. Call rescue groups for assistance in placing the kittens if you cannot provide them with a loving home. Please check our website at www.nccat.net for a link to rescue groups in our area. As a final thought, rescue groups, shelters, and vet clinics alone cannot solve the problem of pet overpopulation. Each and every citizen needs to do their part to solve this tragedy. The only way to empty the shelters is for every owner to spay or neuter their pets, and for every person who sees an abandoned or unwanted animal to use the information provided above to “do the right thing.” Albert Schweitzer once said, “Think occasionally of the suffering of which you spare yourself the sight.” These are words to live by.

My mom and younger brother brought the two hounds home, and when I went out to see Cheyenne, she immediately recognized me. Clark

There is not a sweeter boy in the world. He had a rough start in life, including a battle with Parvo, but today he is alive and kicking and not looking back! Benny loves, loves, loves, other dogs. He will play outside for hours if weather permits. Give him a chance and he will smother you with kisses. Benny loves his stuffed toys and is always a good boy to share with his sister Joon. Benny has been neutered and was born on June 1, 2010. He is crate trained but is still working on his housetraining. Benny is 8 pounds of love! No small children, please, due to how small he is. A fenced in yard is required for Benny.

lives among the humans as a mild-mannered bundle of love. Born in 2009, he wears his superman costume underneath his orange tabby coat. He enjoys afternoons of football (rushing around the room with his favorite mouse toy) and evenings of helping humanity (entertaining, purring and snuggling anyone that gives him attention). Having lost the only home he ever knew, Clark came to live at Next Step temporarily until he can find that purrfect forever family. He will add lots of love and energy for a lifetime to come and promises to use his superman strength only at times of need (in other words when he wants a good long rub).

Seth.

Trixie.

Someone committed to Seth at a young age to give him a forever home. Not everyone thinks of pets as being a forever part of the family because very quickly Seth found himself homeless. How can you abandon a kitten that purrs every time he is touched and one who loves ear rubs? Seth is just that kind of guy. He goes with the flow and gets along with anyone and anything that he meets. Seth was born in early August 2010, is now fully vaccinated, neutered, and ready to find his true forever home. This little orange tabby will make a wonderful addition to any home. He loves to play, yet he will curl right up and cuddle with you.

Have you ever wanted a totally devoted best friend? Beautiful and sweet Trixie would like to apply. Her qualifications include being a fine snuggler and kisser, as well as playfulness, permanent positive attitude, and dedication. That’s dedication to being your best friend. Trixie was Alice’s best friend in the 1950’s sit-com, “The Honeymooners”. They had lots of laughs and fun together. I guarantee this Trixie will take her job seriously. For healthy treats and playtime, Trixie will share a lifetime of adventures and discoveries with you. She was born on October 6, 2010. and is a pug and beagle mix. She is up-to-date on routine shots and will be spayed.

doned in Randleman, NC. They were lucky to end up at the home of an animal lover who made sure they all were placed safely with rescue groups. She now lives in an ARFP foster home with her brother Denver and the resident dogs. Zoey is a fun and playful black lab mix puppy! When it’s naptime though, she loves nothing more than to cuddle up on your lap. It takes Zoey a short time to become comfortable and playful in a new environment, but once she does she enjoys playing with her toys and does great with other animals. Zoey walks very well on a leash and her potty training has been very successful. She would love to find her forever home for Christmas this year.

Are you looking for a guy like Wade? Well look no more. Call 574-9600 for details. n

CAT CARE HOSPITAL

How can I tell that my cat has diabetes? The most common signs of a diabetic cat is excessive water consumption and urination. Cats usually do not drink very often and if they begin drinking large quantities, it is usually a sign that there may be something wrong. Cats that are usually secretive drinkers (drink water while the owners are not watching) will start drinking out of unusual places like the toilet bowl, kitchen sink or the bathtub. Excessive water consumption is usually followed by excessive urination. Most owners will notice that the clumps of urine in the box will be larger or that they have to scoop more frequently to keep the box clean. Another common sign of diabetes in a cat is an excessive or extremely good appetite. Diabetic cats usually act as if they are ravenous and will beg for food constantly. Despite this excessive appetite, most diabetic cats will also begin losing noticeable weight. Since most diabetic cats are overweight, this is one of the first signs seen by owners especially if the cat is not on a weight loss program. Some diabetic cats will also begin to act lethargic and depressed. Some may develop weakness in their legs, especially the hind legs and have difficulty jumping.

Q A

What is the treatment for a diabetic cat? Most diabetic cats will have to start on insulin injections. There are several different types of insulin that are available for cats and the choice of insulin depends on the severity of the diabetes, the presence of other concurrent diseases and also on how well the cat responds to the insulin. These decisions can be made by the cat’s veterinarian. Cats tolerate these injections very well and will barely take notice after they have been treated for a while. There are also prescription diets available specifically for diabetic cats. These diets help to regulate the cat’s blood glucose more consistently and in some cases, may even allow the cat to discontinue the insulin injections altogether. However, the decision to start the cat on the diet must be made cautiously as the high protein content of the diet may adversely affect some older diabetic cats that are already suffering from kidney disease. Again this is a decision that must be made between the owner and the veterinarian. There are now blood glucose meters that are made specifically for cats and dogs. These meters are easy to use and allows the owner to monitor the cat’s blood glucose at home, free from the stress of a visit to the veterinary clinic.

Q A

What is the prognosis for a diabetic cat?

Cat Friendly - Dog Free

Needle-Free Vaccinations Dentistry Behavioral Consultations Laser Therapy for Pain Hours of Operation Monday—Friday . . 7:30am - 6pm Saturday . . . . . . . . 8:00am - 12pm Sunday . . . . . . . . Closed Daily drop-off appointments are also available upon request.

The prognosis for most diabetic cats is good. Most diabetic cats respond well to treatment and as long as no complications arise from the diabetes, cats can continue doing well for years. Prevention is perhaps the most important issue. If your cat is gaining excessive weight, please discuss different weight loss options with your veterinarian. Frequent veterinary exams are also crucial to detect early signs of disease. Since some of the symptoms of diabetes mimic several other common diseases in cats, it is important to have your cat examined by a veterinarian if you should notice any of the signs listed above.

Diabetes and cats As the holiday season approaches our thoughts turn to family, friends, gifts and of course, food- lots of it. Unfortunately, our feline friends will also be sharing this celebration of fun and food. One of the fastest growing health concerns in feline medicine today is the overwhelming number of obesity cases. Obesity can lead to numerous diseases such as cardiac disease, early arthritis, liver disease and diabetes.

Feral Cat Assistance Program Please call to adopt us!

Crystal was found along with her sibling; their mother had been hit by a car. Her rescuer did not want to keep both kittens, so an FCAP foster parent took her in. At only 4 weeks old, she was full of energy, outgoing and had a mind of her own. She is a real character, playing with the big cats and making sure they know that she is the boss. She was born without a tail and when she gets excited the hair stands up in a fan shape where her tail should be. This gives her a unique, cute little bottom!! Crystal is up to date on vaccines, spayed, and microchipped. Crystal’s adoption fee is $110. She would love nothing more than to have a family to call her own. Call 378-0878 for details. n

She is very playful, outgoing, and sweet and is good around other cats and cat friendly dogs. Emmy Lou is up-to-date on shots and will be spayed and mircochipped before being adopted. Do you have room in your heart and home for this bundle of joy?

was abandoned, outside with nobody to care for her, her owner had passed away. Although Goldie lives with other cats now, she would be happiest as an only cat. Living with other cats stresses Goldie and her health has suffered. She is taking Prednisone daily for a condition called Stomatitis. Often a stress-free life can cause her condition to go into remission and she wouldn’t require medication anymore. Goldie’s affectionate personality makes her a wonderful companion for someone that wants a lap cat. Goldie is spayed, up to date on all her vaccines and microchipped.

She is extremely sweet-natured and will get along with other cats well. She also has a very calm disposition and would make a great companion. She likes to follow her foster mom around and loves attention. She is spayed, up-to-date on shots, and microchipped.

She is playful with her 3 siblings..... but when you pick her up she turns into a real purr girl. Polly Wog was born on or about April 25th, 2009. She is a little sweetie. Much smaller than her brothers, but still a big girl. Loves attention, likes to sit in your lap or curl up with you in bed. Polly is spayed, up to date on all vaccines and microchipped. Annabelle is a 4 year old peke who weighs 14 lbs. She was given up by a breeder because she only had one puppy. Poor Annabelle had her pup taken away and given to another mom. She was so sad when she first came to us. With some extra loving she has really started to perk up. She is a very quiet calm dog who would do well in any home environment. She would probably prefer to be a couch potato lap dog!! She is ready to go and even had her teeth cleaned so she can give lots of fresh kisses! Annabelle’s adoption fee is $175. Call 393-0670 if you would like to meet Annabelle. n

Eddie hit the doggie lottery when he was picked up by a kind person. Poor Ed had been wandering around for several weeks with his neck cut wide open!! He is the sweetest boy ever. It will always be a mystery as to how he got hurt. It looks like maybe he got hung up on some wire or fencing and ripped his skin. Eddie was a real trooper at the vet and is on the mend. He weighs 36 lbs. and loves to eat like a beagle. Eddie is probably about 3 years old and appears to be house trained. Eddie’s adoption fee is $100. Call 393-0670 to inquire about Eddie. n

Midnight.

Dear Santa, All I want for Christmas is a family to call my own. I have been a good boy all year. I walked very nicely in the Human Race and I was just in the Bark for Life walk too. My partner, Christy, said I was the best dog there! My foster family can not believe no one ever shows any interest in me. I guess it is just the way I look. I know there are a lot of dogs out there who look like I do. I am willing to dye my hair or wear clothes if that will help. My foster mom says I am perfect the way I am and the right family will come along. I am about 2 years old now and have been waiting for a year. My first family just did not have time to spend with me. My adoption fee is only $75. I am really worth a lot more than that! Hopefully you can grant my one wish. If not, I will try the Easter bunny in the spring! Love, Midnight. P.S. Call 393-0670 if anyone wants to meet me. n

Bella is an 18 month old terrier mix and weighs 10 lbs. This sweet girl suffered for 3 days (yes 3 days!) trying to have puppies. When she was finally given to our rescue, it was almost too late. She was rushed to the vet and had an emergency c-section. She lost all of her pups and she was so sad about that. After several weeks of TLC, Bella is raring to go! She was very shy and fear aggressive when she first came to us, but is starting to do better. She loves to play with other dogs and has become quite the wrestler. Bella would do best in a home without children due to her history of fear aggression. Bella’s adoption fee is $150. Call 393-0670 for more details. n

Eve is a 5 year old shih tzu who weighs 10 lbs. Eve was rescued from a breeder who did not take very good care of her. She needs a patient person to help her gain some confidence. She has never had any affection from humans, so it takes her a little time to accept it. With some love, we are sure Eve would make someone the perfect pet. She is a quiet dog who is not demanding at all. She would do best in a calm peaceful household.

Eve’s adoption fee is $175. Call 393-0670 if you would like to meet Eve and possibly give her the home she has deserved for so long. n

Safety Tips Some common foods and plants found around the home during the holidays and the rest of the year that could possibly make your pet sick or even cause death. Top 10 Toxins in the Kitchen Chocolate Grapes, raisins & currants Fatty table scraps Onions & Garlic Compost Human medications Macadamia nuts Household cleaners Unbaked bread, dough/alcohol

Poisonous Holiday Plants and Common Houseplants Amaryllis Azalea Bird of Paradise Buttercup Calla Lily Chrysanthemum

Crown of Thorns Dieffenbachia Easter Lily Elephant Ears Fern - B racken, Asparagus, Sprangeri Holly - English Hyacinth Hydrangea Ivy Mistletoe Philodendron Poinsettia Rhododendron Rhubarb Spinach Tomato vine Tulip Umbrella Plant

Symptoms will vary from animal to animal. Some may eat these items and will exhibit no symptoms. While others will exhibit local irritants such as drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, irritation to the mouth and skin, or swelling around the mouth. Extreme cases of poisoning may cause convulsions, tremors to the heart, respiratory and kidney problems and in the most extreme cases may cause coma or even death. It is good to note that most dogs and cats will vomit after chewing on plants. This probably does not mean poisoning. Severe or persistant vomiting is a danger sign especially when combined with one or more of the other symptoms.

not been adopted yet. After visiting her at her wonder-

ful foster home, I took her home a week later! But, I couldn’t leave without a companion for her. Now “Lily Pearl” and “Murphy” are the best part of coming home from work. I am beyond grateful for NC CAT, because my two kittens had such a rough start. Lily Pearl was in the middle of the road on a rainy night; she was nearly run over! Murphy was thrown out of a car window in Thomasville, and a kind person stopped to get him. But, it is NC CAT that took my cats in and helped them to be the funniest, friendliest and most beautiful cats I know. Not only that, the women at NC CAT have kept in touch with me and helped me out with questions I’ve

had as a new cat owner. They made my experience of adopting my cats even better!

Red Dog Farm

Please contact Red Dog Farm via website to find out how to adopt us!

Bert & Ernie just came to Red Dog Farm after being pulled from a not so great situation. They are happy, healthy, and social little fellows who just want someone to love. They have been vaccinated, neutered, and microchipped so they are ready to go to their new homes. Bert and Ernie are two of the sweetest cats you will ever meet. They have been the life of the party at their foster home and at two of our recent adoption events. If you are looking for a good natured, social kitten, Bert and/or Ernie are your men.

came to Red Dog Farm after being found on the front doorstep of a local business on Battleground Avenue. We believe that he may have been tossed out of a car window since he has road rash on his face. The veterinarians expect him to make a full recovery and have no permanent damage for his escapade. He is a happy and healthy kitten who has quite a purr. He will make a fantastic kitten and full grown cat for a loving family or individual.

owners because their apartment complex decided to no longer allow “bully breeds.” His ideal home would be somewhere where he would have a very active owner who wanted to run with him or a very active dog for him to play with. He has a lot of energy and needs a good outlet for it. Hooch is friendly and gentle with people and would probably do fine with children, but is not good with cats. If you rub his belly, he rolls over and gives it to you. Hooch is neutered, housebroken and crate trained. He has never been an outdoor dog and would be best suited for an indoor, active home. He is being fostered by Shiloh K-9, where he is working on nice manners so that he can control his energy and not jump up on people. He will be a great dog when finished with training.

situation in which her owners could no longer afford to care for her. Star is very sweet and has nice manners but her foster mom quickly noticed that she seemed to have to think for a minute before going through gates, finding her stall, etc. Our veterinarian examined Star and discovered that she has cataracts that severely limit her vision. Star was adopted last year but her adopters surrendered her back to us recently because they could no longer care for her. Star is a sweet girl with very nice manners and stands nicely when tied. At only 11 years old, Star could be a long-term partner for someone willing to take a little extra time with her. She would also do very well letting children ride her on a lead line while supervised by an adult.

rescued from a hoarding situation in SC where over 179 chihuahuas were living in a single house. They are a fantastic group of dogs. They were a little nervous at first but have settled into their foster homes and are now ready for adoption. They are learning that all humans, big or small, are fantastic. They don’t have a mean bone in their bodies. They are happy, healthy, and social. Their foster parents report that they are learning basic house manners and love to follow them around. Mona. Poor Mona. Her family adopted her from us in 2006 and recently found out their jobs will be transferring them out of the country. To make matters worse- no pets allowed; they had no choice but to bring her back to us. Mona is having some difficulty adjusting, having been in a home for so long. We want this to be as painless as possible for her, we want her to find a new forever home as soon as possible. Mona is just adorable and absolutely sweet as can be, even if she is a litle confused and distressed. She lived with a dog previous to coming back to us, and we feel a home with another dog would be best. Just take a look at her faceshe is so precious. She is spayed and up to date on vaccinations. Mona’s Home for the Holidays adoption fee is $100. Call 375-3222 if you would like to adopt Mona. n

Zoey. Hey! I’m Zoey! I was dropped off by my owner who was going overseas- I wasn’t able to come along. I am an 11 month old playful girl who loves to run. My best fit would be with an athletic, active family who loves the outdoors as much as I do. I would enjoy a fenced in yard, but will be fine with long walks! I came in scared and am still dealing with that. I am confused and don’t know who I can trust. Can I trust you? Will you be my forever companion? I’m spayed, on heartworm preventative, microchipped and up to date on vaccinations. . My Home for the Holidays adoption fee is $100. If you give me a chance, I will be yours forever. Call 375-3222 to find out more about me. n

Dear Santa, I know times are hard so I am not asking for anything this Christmas. Instead I am asking you to help someone else. Santa, would you please give my friend at the shelter a wonderful human just like mine? One who needs a cuddly, devoted companion? A human who will let him get on the sofa, laugh at his snoring and take him for rides in the car? A human just like mine who will be his best friend forever? If that’s asking too much could you at least give him a yard to run around in or a park to visit? I know he’d love that. Santa, could you give my friend at the shelter a soft bed to sleep on? The concrete looks so hard and I think of him every time I curl up on the fluffy cushion that my family has given me. And could you please, oh please, give him one of those red rubber things that repeatedly gets stuffed with cheese and dog treats? That thing is awesome! Oh Santa, just for Christmas, could you at least let him have a few more walks outside and maybe some play time with the other dogs? Could you please send some humans by his cage to tell him that he is worthy and that it isn’t his fault that he is in the shelter? The more I think of him the more I realize how blessed I am. Santa, if you can’t give him these things I will understand. But please, if his time is up, could you just give him a little love before he goes? Thank you and Merry Christmas!

Please remember to always discuss presenting someone an animal as a gift on any occasion. The intended recipient may not want or be able to care for a pet and could end up having to surrender it to a shelter. There are many types of animals who are in need of adoption, but they need to be welcomed into a home where they will live out their lives.

Charlie is a one year old, neutered male. He is up to date on his vaccinations and his heartworm preventative. Charlie is young and would benefit from further obedience training although he knows the basics and is eager to perform for yummy snacks. Charlie tends to be quite intimidated by new people and situations. Slow NC Airedale Rescue and steady will win the race with this boy. Charlie is looking for an alpha human to be his leader and protector. Charlie’s favorite activity is his morning walk. If you love the outdoors and are a runner, walker, or hiker this is the candidate for you.

Pumpkin. Hello my name is Pumpkin and my mom was rescued when she was pregnant and I was born under the care of CBHR. My mom was an adorable basset hound and my dad was just passing through...we don’t know what breed Dad was, but as cute as I am he must have been cute too. I am now in full blown puppyhood, headed into my Carolina Basset Hound Rescue teenage years. I love to play, play, play. While I prefer to play, I will need training and structure to grow into a loving well behaved adult. Can you give me a loving home with structure and lots of play, to grow into a great friend?

Please submit an online application at www.nc-airedalerescue.com or contact ncairerescue@yahoo.com. n

If interested in Pumpkin please apply at www.cbhr.com or contact rgering@triad.rr.com. n

Guido. Hello there, I’m Guido!

Chihuahua Rescue & Transport

I’m approximately 6 years old and currently weigh around 7-8 lbs. I’m a Chug (Chi/Pug mix) and a perfect gentleman. I even know how to sit and shake! I love to go on car rides and to sleep in bed with you. My current foster mom says that my only flaw is snoring while I am fast asleep. I get along with the other dogs at my foster house and love to go outside (unless it’s raining). I also love to go for walks.

Bella & Z are a bonded pair consisting of a precious female mini red long hair and a male mini red smooth. They are both around two to three years and weigh about 10 lbs. each. Surrendered to rescue Almost Home Dachshund Rescue when their family separated, these sweet dogs are stuck to each other like glue. They do everything together—play, sleep and eat. Understandably, they are in search of a home where they can remain together. Bella and Z enjoy running around and playing outside, but they will readily come inside and settle down for a nap on the couch with their favorite people. Bella and Z are crate-trained, walk well on a leash and are as sweet as can be. They are also spayed and neutered and up-to-date on their vaccinations. Visit www.almosthomerescue.org for more information. n

Blackberry has lived a fair amount of life already and is on the second half of her journey. We have no idea what her memories are because she apparently had been dumped on a rural road. Blackberry will benefit Doberman Rescue from being in a home where she of the Triad has plenty of exercise and a proper diet. Despite being a little older and somewhat overweight, she still is strong, interested, and eager, excitedly pulling on her leash on the promise of going somewhere and ably jumping in and out of the SUV, where she rides happily and calmly. She is easygoing and obedient, and of course house trained, and she has beautifully cropped ears.

Sasha is a 15 year old Quarter Horse/Morgan cross who would make an excellent trail partner for an intermediate rider. She is a smart girl and will try a new rider, but with a confident leader she will give you her all. She is sure-footThe United States Equine ed, sturdy, and not spooky. She is Rescue League, Inc. (USERL) not demanding and will get the job done. She is an easy keeper and good for the farrier, and at 14.2 H she is sturdy enough for a smaller adult rider. She is a wonderful mare who just needs a new forever home.

Gunn

Loki was born in GSRA’s foster care.

is a precious 10 month old boy who is also deaf! He loves to be around other dogs and plays so well with them. We are working on sign language with him. He loves to rub up and down your leg almost like a cat! He is your typical silly boxer boy that loves everyone. Gunn will need to be in a home with another dog that he can rely on for his “ears” or a family that is experienced with Four Seasons Boxer Rescue deaf dogs. Gunn is a sweetheart and once you meet him you will know that being deaf is not something that holds him back!

His mom, pure GSD, gave birth to a litter of pups soon after being put in the foster program. Dad is a big question mark, but he was definitely big and had floppy ears! Loki is very much a GSD on the inside despite how he looks on the outside. He’s very athletic, alert and VERY smart. PlayGerman Shepherd ing ball, running and wrestling with other Rescue & Adoptions dogs are some of his favorite things to do, but swimming is his all time favorite! Loki walks well on leash, is crate and house trained, rarely barks (except to alert - like every good watch dog should), gets along with other dogs and is fine with kids.

Gunn’s adoption fee is $275. Visit www.FourSeasonsBoxerRescue.com or email us at FourSeasonsBoxerRescue@gmail.com to adopt Gunn. n

If Loki sounds like the dog for you, visit www.gsdrescue.org for contact information. n

Jackson is a very handsome 1-1/2 year old male. He is friendly, very active and loves playing, running and eating. He loves people, including children, but is not fond of other dogs and has a dominant personality. Jackson would do best as the only dog in the house - we don’t know Triad Golden Retriever Rescue how he would do with cats, but there is a good chance he would chase them if they run. He needs an owner who establishes himself/herself as the alpha in the family so he doesn’t have to. If you would like to meet Jackson, contact us through our website, www.tgrr.org, to find out more. n

Knock-Knock is, a teeny-tiny, shorty JRT who is as cute as a button and weighs about 8 lbs. He is 3 years old and is as low-key a JRT as we’ve ever had in the rescue. Knock-Knock was rescued from the Greenville, SC animal shelter where his time was growing short. He loves people and his Finding Great Homes for tiny docked tail is wagging constantly. Jack Russell Terriers Knock-Knock doesn’t play nice with cats so the right home for him is one that is cat free. Knock-Knock has been neutered, microchipped and is up to date on all of his shots. He is crate, leash and house trained. Knock-Knock’s adoption fee is $250. To give Knock-Knock a great home contact Robin at 336-414-1373 or Robin@insightrecruiters.com. Training Your Dog

Take Me Out to the Dog Park? by Jan Wilson

D

og Parks have become very popular in recent years and have popped up in several locations throughout the Triad. They are a great place for dog owners to congregate, create friendships and share dog tips. However, dog parks are not appropriate for all dogs. A dog that has not been exposed to a social situation can become very stressed and traumatized. Following some basic guidelines and closely observing your dog’s behavior can make this experience a positive one. 1) Go to the dog park during off-peak hours when fewer dog are present. This is especially beneficial if you have not visited a dog park previously and are not sure of your dog’s reaction. Let your dog get accustomed to the surroundings. Call him to you often for some great treats. Practice some basic commands, such as sit. 2) Bring some great treats with you. Treats that will get your dog’s attention when you need it! The treats should be small enough so your dog does not have to chew them or spit them on the ground. Always pop them in your dog’s mouth and never put them on the ground. A treat on the ground can cause a fight with other dogs. 3) When visiting at a busy time, don’t immediately enter the fenced area. Hang

back and wait for your dog to settle a bit. When entering the fenced area, move away from the door as soon as you can and drop or remove your dog’s lead. Dog greetings can be stressful when you are the new kid. A tight lead can leave your dog feeling trapped and unable to greet other dogs properly. If possible, take a walk around the perimeter of the park, allowing your dog to relax. Remember this is his time, and it is important to make his transition with new friends stress free. 4) Observe your dog’s behavior and act accordingly. If you feel the experience will not be a positive one for your dog, it may be best to find another activity for the day. If he hesitates and won’t enter the park, trust him. He may not be ready for a high energy situation. It could be traumatizing for a shy dog. If it looks like your dog would have a blast, you will have a happy tired dog soon. 5) Notice the other dog’s behavior within the park. Are dog owners interacting with their dogs, or are they ignoring them to chat amongst themselves? When your dog finds some playmates, it is important to ensure the play is mutual. Dogs tumble and mouth each other frequently. They should be taking turns being on the top and neither dog should be the constant aggressor. A dog that is practicing bully behavior and frequently pinning others to the ground is not a popular playmate. It is important to call your dog out of a play situation often to insure it is a controlled situation. Dog’s play can become over excited easily if their play is not interrupted for a rest period.

6) Use toys with care. Not all dogs like to share toys and they can become very possessive. If there are toys in the park, pay extra close attention or if your dog does not like to share, it may not be a great play group. When your dog becomes tired… it is time to go. Like children, a tired dog can become cranky and their temper becomes much shorter. If possible, do not call your dog to you, but walk over to him and attach his lead. If you have been giving him breaks during his playtime, this will not alert him to anything but an additional treat and he will happily follow you from the park.

Jan Wilson is the owner of Dog-Gone Fun Dog Daycare and Training located in Kernersville. She has been fostering and training dogs professionally for over ten years, teaching group classes as well as private training. She has participated in dog related activities, including Search and Rescue, Therapy dog, flyball and agility. She resides in Greensboro with her 2 dogs, Tonka and Kiwi.

Tex is 11 months old and such a sweet boy. He has a ferocious lab appetite and no longer needs any encouragement to eat. Tex walks great on a leash and loves to ride in the car. He plays great with his foster dogs. He is NC Lab Rescue working on his manners and already knows sit. Tex likes to sleep close to his people and gets up at 7:00. He was incredibly shy around people but he’s improving greatly; he is still a tiny bit shy around strangers. Would you like to meet Tex? Visit www.labrescuenc.org for contact information. n

Bella is a pit bull mix that runs like the wind, can jump 5 feet in the air, loves to chase birds, play ball, and generally just makes you feel good to watch her energy and enthusiasm for life. She is a very smart dog who will retrieve a ball and will sit to command, and heels nicely on leash. She loves to play and run but wants to be by your side or in your lap during a thunderstorm or at the vet’s office. She can be timid when you first meet her but really loves Carolina Care Bullies people. Bella does not like cats and would be best in a home as the only dog or with one other bigger dog like herself. She needs room to run and play, so active families are a plus! Given the opportunity she will win over your heart. Contact Amanda at amanda@carebullies.org for details. n

Xena. Hi, my name is Xena and if you want a cuddle baby that will love on you all the time, I am the dog for you. I am 11 years young, housebroken, fully vetted and very well behaved. I get along great with kids, other dogs and even cats. I like lots of attention, so I am looking for a home with no more than 2 other dogs. I love to go for rides in the car and basically want to spend all my time with you.

If you are interested in learning more about me or want to give me my forever home, please contact my foster mom at info@rescueminpins.com or visit www.rescueminpins.com. She will have a hard time giving me up because we love each other, but since she works a lot, she just wants me to be in a loving home where I can get all the attention that I need. n

Becca, almost 2, has a cute little bobtail, which appears to be the result of an injury sometime in her past. TCR was asked to rescue this “Manx” from a shelter. By the time we discovered she wasn’t Tailless Cat Rescue a natural bobtail it was too late, we couldn’t send her back to die. She’s very affectionate and likes to put her nose against your nose and then just sit and hold it there without moving.. She has a great purr, and is petite, around 7.5 lbs. She likes to play, but if given the choice is just as happy curled up in your lap or next to you while you read a book or watch TV. She’d be happiest as an only cat. She is vaccinated, vetted, wormed, spayed, microchipped and is FeLV/FIV negative. Email taillesscatrescue@hotmail.com or visit www.taillesscatrescue.com for more information. n

Maddie & Zecke. Maddie is 4 years old and Zecke is 3. They are indoors most of the time, as the picture shows. Both have been spayed and neutered. Both are up to date on vaccines and heartworm treatment. Their parents had to move and could not take them. We Care Shepherd Rescue They are good with children and other dogs. They have lived together since Zecke was brought home at 6 weeks of age. We would like them to continue to live together if at all possible. These are lovable dogs, though Zecke is shy until you get to know him. If anyone has a big heart and room in their home these are two great catches that are available for love. Holiday To Do List – Buy Turkey, Invite Family and Friends, Bring the Dog to the Animal Shelter Press Release Submitted by Robin Manley

F

orty-four dogs and puppies are looking for a great home for the holidays since a local woman rescued them from four North Carolina Animal Shelters when they faced euthanasia. For these dogs and puppies, their former owners needed to prepare for Thanksgiving and according to their personal “to do list”- right after buying the turkey -was to drop Fido off at the shelter. What these people failed to realize is that when an owner surrenders a dog, the shelter is not obligated to hold the dog for any period of time. If there is no room at the shelter, the dog can be euthanized and never even make it to the adoption floor. Most people don’t adopt dogs prior to the holidays so when you take an animal to an already overcrowded shelter, and it is near a holiday, your animal faces a bleak future. For many of these animals, the truth is - they don’t stand a chance. And before you blame the animal shelters, think again. These shelter workers do the best they can with the limited resources they have to work with. There is no way any shelter could be prepared for the increase in unwanted animals surrendered just before a holiday. Finding Great Homes for Jack Russell

Terriers, a Jack Russell Rescue group located in the Piedmont Triad, opened their rescue to 44 dogs and puppies that include Soft Coated Wheaton Terriers, Beagles, Jack Russells, Chihuahua’s and Min Pins, Rat Terriers, Fox Terriers and German Shepherds and many, many more breeds in order to spare their lives. Each dog has been prepared for adoption by friends who have previously adopted dogs from Finding Great Homes Rescue. Local children and their parents have been walking and socializing the dogs while Planned Pethood, a low cost spay and neuter clinic, made sure that each dog was spayed or neutered; microchipped and received all of their vaccinations. “For the past year, I noticed a spike in the amount of dogs that would fill our shelters prior to each holiday, but this Thanksgiving season, the spike is ten-fold and Christmas is right around the corner. My rescue went from 14 dogs to 44 dogs overnight. Daily I am asked to save ten or more dogs from North Carolina shelters and sadly, we have run out of room. It breaks my heart to say that there is no space at the rescue until we can get these 44 dogs adopted. ” said Robin Manley of Finding Great Homes for Jack Russell Terriers Rescue. In the spirit of finding each of these 44 dogs a

home by the holidays, Manley will hold an adoption event daily at 1701 Pleasant Ridge Rd, Greensboro, NC from 10 am – 7pm starting December 1 and will continue this event until each of these dogs has found a great home. “Each of these dogs deserve a chance to be part of a family who would welcome them during the holidays and each day thereafter. “ And Manley’s not stopping there, “if we can get these 44 dogs adopted, we will rescue more dogs in order to save more lives.”

To Find Out More Individual photographs, along with more information about each dog, are available at http://www.findinggreathomesforjrt.petfinder.com To adopt one of the dogs or puppies, please email Finding Great Homes for Jack Russell Terrier Volunteer at Robin@insightrecruiters.com. Adoption fees will start at $200.00 per dog, which will be donated to provide future care for rescuing more dogs in need of great homes. Since July 2009, Finding Great Homes for Jack Russell’s Rescue has saved over 540 dogs and found each of them a great home.

Ellie came to us after a rescue organization saved her and her littermates from a high kill shelter. Upon adoption, Ellie had little to no domestic or social skills. Ellie eventually became more accustomed to her new home but was struggling to fit into our “pack.” We learned about Shiloh K-9 while on a camping trip almost a year before adopting Ellie. We had the pleasure of meeting an old Shiloh “camper” named Tank. Tank’s family was more than willing to provide us with their trainers name and we stored that information, vowing to contact Shiloh if the need arose. After talking with Valerie and Adam about their program, witnessing their love for animals and their desire for us to succeed as a new family our hearts and minds were at ease. Each time we visited Ellie at “camp,” we noticed a significant change in her confidence, ability to listen and desire to achieve the goals. But the true test came for all of us when she returned home for good. Today, Ellie is more vibrant, confident and unafraid. Before, she was enclosed in a shell of fear, anxiety and uncertainty. Today, after her training with Shiloh K-9, she is a vital member of the family, that is a joy to be around. I know her road to recovery was due to love, patience and the skills she learned while “camping” with Shiloh K-9. We are extremely grateful for the time and support Shiloh and it’s support team invested into Ellie, so that we can lead a more fulfilling life together as a family.
