We believe the last weeks, days, and moments that an owner has with a pet are the most cherished times, and should be handled with dignity and love. By providing veterinary hospice and pet euthanasia services in the home, the humananimal bond is less disturbed, making a much more peaceful closing to a shared bond.

Don’t Give in to Puppy Pressure: Developing a Strong Relationship with Your Dog By Mary Vanderlinden
Surprise! You’re a new mommy or daddy! The moment you
brought your new puppy home, you assumed the responsibility of a parent. Let’s get right to the point, rearing a puppy is very similar to parenting a child - you must be firm yet gentle while establishing leadership. In this article, I’m going to share how to avoid puppy pressure and nurture your new friend into a respectable dog. You may be asking, what is puppy pressure? It is the ability of your puppy to manipulate and train you to get what he wants. This happens when the puppy parent becomes reactive, loses the ability to be proactive, and gives in to the pup’s demands. The result - the puppy becomes master of the house, effectively ruling the roost while mom and dad become slaves to the canine. If the manipulation goes unchecked the behavior escalates and puppy may mature into an ill-mannered dog.
What does puppy pressure look like? Here are a few scenarios Lisa adopted Frenchie, an eight-week-old Bichon Frise, to be her new companion. At first, Lisa was determined to crate train Frenchie, but it turned into a nightmare at bedtime. Frenchie whimpered and whined. This prompted Lisa to look in on Frenchie to see if she was okay. Lisa let Frenchie out to cuddle and comfort her before gently putting her back in the crate. Lisa’s interaction resulted in Frenchie’s intensified crying. Eventually Lisa gave in to the sad eyes peering from the crate, and she let Frenchie on her bed. Now Frenchie never ventures near the crate and has a permanent spot sleeping right next to Lisa. Dave is training Rex, his German Shepherd. Dave is using high value treats which Rex really likes. While Rex is doing a wonderful job at mastering the skills that Dave wants, the treats are irresistible to Rex who is determined to eat the whole bag. Rex begins putting pressure on Dave with soft barks and a stare. Then, Rex begins to bark louder and with a more insistent tone. Rex makes a bold gesture and sits down with a thump in front of Dave. Dave reacts by petting Rex and giving him more treats to enjoy. George loves his American breed, Junior, and takes the dog everywhere. George often carries Junior, a small Poodle Shih Tzu mix. One day, George tries to walk Junior in the park but Junior was not into using his four legs. Junior lay spread-eagle on the ground,
refusing to budge. Mary Vanderlinden is an American Kennel Club George, feeling a (AKC) certified trainer and evaluator, and a member bit embarrassed by of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers, the Junior’s behavior, Carolina Dog Training Club, and Pet Partners. Contact Mary at friendlyhounds@gmail.com or online scooped him up and continued the at: www.friendlyhounds.com. walk. Who is really in control in each of these vignettes? Can you pinpoint where the puppy parent went awry? All three of these scenarios are similar to a child throwing a temper tantrum. And, why do children throw tantrums? To get what they want!
In each scenario the puppy parent was reactive and the biggest sin – the puppy parent gave in and overindulged! So, what do you do to resist puppy pressure and maintain your status as pack leader? Start taking pro-active and solution-oriented actions. You must determine what is and is not acceptable and establish boundaries. You can do this with firm and gentle guidance. Help the puppy to understand that the crate is his space and allow him to get used to going in/out on his own, and importantly sleeping in the crate. Remember that developing your puppy’s good behavior starts with you, Mom and Dad. Do not be a reactive puppy parent, analyze situations and research solutions if you are unsure of what to do. Set a routine that is healthy for both you and your puppy. Set times for daily exercise and training, this will essentially be the time when puppy gets treats for making progress on a command or task. Can you reward your dog for just being a great companion with a new toy or bone? You bet! But, you decide when the time is right to give a special something to puppy. As an involved puppy parent you will learn your dog’s cues. By involvement and observation, you will quickly begin to understand when puppy is demanding treats, attention, or taking control, versus asking to go out when he needs a potty break or signaling when he is going to be sick. One final and very important thought: always be positive and don’t get frustrated. Coax puppy with kindness and use such moments as a learning experience. Remember - do not to give in to temptation. Think ahead about how you want your pup to behave and work toward that goal!

Vet’s Corner Lane Songer, DVM Greensboro Veterinary Hospital Prior to becoming a veterinarian, Dr. Lane Songer enjoyed a successful career as a Registered Nurse for over 20 years. Dr. Songer obtained her BS in Nursing from Radford University in Virginia, and her DVM from the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine. She and her husband, T.J., have returned to North Carolina after many years, and currently reside in Greensboro with their cat, Miss PeePee, and their dog, Eddy. Their son, Cole, recently graduated from the University of Virginia with a degree in Computer Science Engineering and also resides in Greensboro, where he is employed by a software company and enjoys free-lance web development. Besides working in the profession she loves, Dr. Songer likes being outdoors, especially hiking, kayaking and fishing. Dr. Songer is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association, and the Virginia Veterinary Medical Association. With her experience in the human and veterinary medical fields, she possesses a strong interest in the One Health concept, “a worldwide strategy for expanding interdisciplinary collaborations and communications in all aspects of health care for humans, animals and the environment.” Her professional interests also include animal nutrition and preventive care, believing that proper nutrition and preventive medicine are vital for a pet’s health, well being and longevity. Dr. Songer not only enjoys working with animals, but with clients as well, especially in regards to educating clients about their pets, disease processes, and public health. She looks forward to working with and developing long-lasting relationships with you and your pets!
NUTRITION AND YOUR PET Proper nutrition is vital throughout all stages of your pet’s life, and your pet’s nutritional needs can change frequently. Regular visits with your veterinarian for preventive care, including a nutritional consultation, are of great value in keeping your pet happy and healthy. Nutrition is not just about giving your pet food every day. There are many factors to consider when thinking about your pet’s nutritional health, such as: AGE: A senior pet will have very different energy requirements than a growing puppy, as well as changes in mobility, brain function and muscle mass, which can all be aided by proper nutrition. Make sure to feed your pet a diet designated specifically for his or her age. SPECIES: A cat’s nutritional needs vary greatly from a dog’s. For example, the amino acid taurine is crucial for cats to prevent serious eye and heart problems. Commercially prepared cat foods provide this necessary nutrient. This is just one reason why cats should not be fed dog food. It is important to consult with a veterinary nutritionist if you are preparing a homemade diet for your pet to ensure that they are receiving the nutrients they need.
10
February 2017 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails
LACTATION/PREGNANCY: A dog or cat that is pregnant or nursing their young require increased caloric intake in order to maintain their own ideal body condition while providing proper nutrition for their young. ACTIVITY: A very active dog, such as a herding or athletic dog, will have very different caloric requirements than a sedentary one. DISEASE: A sick or injured animal’s nutritional requirements can vary greatly. The animal may have increased nutrient losses that must be replaced, such as losses from vomiting, diarrhea, abscesses, draining wounds or kidney disease. Or the animal may have increased nutrient requirements for healing, as in cases of trauma, fever, or chronic lung disease. WEATHER: Extremes in heat and cold can also affect your pet’s dietary needs. An animal may have limited activity during hot weather, requiring fewer calories, but require more energy to maintain body heat in the cold weather. Each pet is an individual and each individual’s nutritional needs must be addressed, met and maintained. Make sure to discuss your pet’s diet with your veterinarian at every visit to ensure your pet’s unique nutritional needs are being met. A key part of proper nutrition for your pet is maintaining optimal body condition and weight. Weight management in pets is crucial and can be quite difficult to manage - or quite easy. Excess weight in pets, just like with humans, can lead to serious health issues such as diseases of the joints, digestive tract, kidneys and heart. Maintaining a healthy, ideal weight will reduce stress on the body and help prevent serious disease. Feeding your pet twice daily instead of leaving a bowl of food out for all-day grazing is beneficial. This may take some “tough love” on your part, but your pet will not starve, despite the guilty looks you may receive for the first few days. At meal time, put your pet’s food bowl down and give him/her about 20-30 minutes to eat, then pick up the bowl. It won’t take long for your pet to realize that if he/she does not eat when the food is provided, then they will have to wait until the next meal. Decreasing the amount of food and treats fed daily can also help. Make sure to consult with your veterinarian regarding the amount of food your pet requires, and take into consideration your pet’s individual physiologic factors as well. It is important to give your pet high quality, nutritionally sound treats in proper amounts. There are many commercially prepared treats that are “empty calories” for your pet and will only serve to put weight on your pet while providing little to no nutritional value. Try treating your pet with baby carrots, cubed zucchini or green beans - raw or frozen even! Or use just a few pieces of your pet’s dry food as treats. Supplementing your pet’s diet with vegetables is another great way to help them feel fuller longer between meals; adding carrots, green beans or plain canned pumpkin (no spices!) to your pet’s diet will add extra fiber for satiety, without adding extra calories. Nutrition is just one key component for optimal health care for your pet. Talk with your veterinarian regularly about your pet’s diet. Feeding your pet properly and keeping your pet at a healthy weight are vital to ensuring you and your pets enjoy a long and happy life together!

O, the Joy of Rescue
By Janice Coltrane Freeman
W
Sometimes we rescue animals that really end up rescuing us. O, the joy of rescue! There is nothing like it.
inston was in serious trouble. He was in severe pain, and his young owners didn’t know what to do for the puppy they held in their arms. They had no money to get him to a veterinarian, and the rescue group from which he had been adopted offered no assistance. Without help Winston’s owners knew he would die. As luck would have it, or maybe even divine intervention, the little canine and his owners encountered an AARF associate in the parking lot where they stood. After a brief conversation, it was discovered that Winston, being a typical curious puppy, had swallowed a sock that was obviously stuck in a place where socks aren’t digested. Without hesitation, and with grateful spirits, the young couple handed Winston to the lady from AARF. Two surgeries later, and lots of TLC have produced an end result befitting a Hollywood ending. Winston has a great foster family and the promise of a permanent home in the very near future. O, the joy of the rescue experience! Winston has brought so much fun and happiness into his new foster home. Volunteering with an animal rescue group, caring for unwanted and abandoned cats and dogs can be one of the most rewarding and satisfying experiences imaginable. The unconditional love and gratitude of an animal whose life has been turned upside down cannot be explained by mere words. Paisley, a petite brown tabby, along with her three kittens, came into the AARF program from a local high-kill shelter. Watching

Paisley care for her babies, and later six additional orphan kittens, was amazing! The love of this tiny cat shown through her bathing these precious bundles of fur, nursing them for weeks, and teaching them to play and interact with each other brought so much fun to the foster family. If anyone wants to feel appreciated and fulfilled, the rescue experience is awaiting. Some of the most satisfying experiences of my life have been the times when I walk out of a high-kill shelter with a cat or dog who moments before sat huddled in the back of a cold, steel cage awaiting euthanasia. Somehow I believe that these animals know instinctively that their lives have been spared. O, the sheer joy that fills my soul when I place that carrier in the front seat of my car and peer into those frightened eyes, and I can say, “You’re going to be just fine. I will love and care for you, and I know you’ll do the same for me.” I recently saw a bumper sticker that read, “Who rescued who?” Sometimes we rescue animals that really end up rescuing us. O, the joy of rescue! There is nothing like it.
Adopt Winston
How You Can Know the Joy of Rescue AARF, the Animal Adoption and Rescue Foundation in Winston-Salem, is always looking for more volunteers. Many times the difference between our being able save a dog or cat from a high-kill shelter or a homeless situation lies in our ability to provide a foster home. One person can make such a difference in saving animal lives.
Fostering allows an individual an opportunity to provide a safe, loving home for cats and dogs while they await their permanent adoptive home. Veterinary care is made available through our partner veterinarians, and animal food is often donated from area businesses. If fostering an animal in your home is not an option, there are lots of opportunities to care for the resident cats and kittens at the AARF House, which is located at 311 Harvey Street in Winston-Salem. All foster dogs and puppies live in private homes, not at the AARF House. No non-profit animal rescue organization could exist without donations. As my grandmother used to say, “We know how to stretch a dollar like a rubber band!” How thrilled we are when we open the mail and there is a monetary donation, or when children decide to forgo gifts for a birthday party and choose instead to bring cat and dog food to help our animals. Knowing the joy of rescue takes many paths, but the results are the same. Animals’ lives are saved, and our community is better for it. If you are interested in becoming a partner in this experience called “rescue”, please call us at 336-768-7387 or go to our website at www.aarfanimals.org. You can see for yourself the joy of rescue.

Training Your Pet Vet’s Corner Angelique Fuller, DVM Dr. Angelique Fuller is the owner/veterinarian at King’s Crossing Animal Hospital in Oak Ridge, North Carolina. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Design and Production for Theater from The North Carolina School of the Arts in 1997, a Master of Science in Animal Health Science from The North Carolina Agricultural and Technical University in 2003 and a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from North Carolina State University in 2007. After graduation, Dr. Fuller worked full time at Guilford Jamestown Veterinary Hospital in Greensboro and as a relief emergency veterinarian at Carolina Veterinary Specialist and Emergency Services of Forsyth County. She is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association. Dr. Fuller has had a wide variety of life experiences and finds that her art and medicine backgrounds blend together seamlessly. Growing up, she has always had a love for animals and realized early that a pet’s health and well-being played an important role in the human-animal bond. Dr. Fuller, husband Brian and their son enjoy sharing their home with a cat named Burman and two dogs (Duncan and Goosie). They also have five beautiful chickens that they adore!
Lyme Disease –
It’s Here, But do We Need to Be in Fear? What is Lyme Disease?
Lyme Disease is caused by a bacterial infection transmitted by a tick bite. The name of the bacteria causing the disease is called Borrelia burdorferi. Lyme Disease is currently the most commonly reported human vector borne disease in the United States according to the Centers of Disease Control. However, even though it is the most common reported disease, the majority of the cases (95%) are from 14 out of the 50 states.
But can dogs get Lyme Disease?
Yes, but the majority of dogs who test positive never get sick (about 95%). Unfortunately, we have no way of predicting for sure which 5% will get sick. Most of the clinical signs do not begin for weeks or even months after infection. Most common signs are joint pain and stiffness and less likely fever. However, the most serious complication associated with Lyme Disease is its potential effect on the kidneys. It can cause glomerular nephritis, a life threatening and most often fatal kidney disease.
But I heard Lyme Disease was only in the northeast US?
It’s here also! I know everyone loves to research online, so if you want the most up to date stats for dogs check out Companion Animal Parasite Council (https://www.capcvet.org). The following picture shows the 2016 stats for Guilford County from capcvet.org. Lyme Guilford County 1 out of 30 Dogs tested positive for Lyme of

Companion Animal Parasite Council www.capcvet.org
My dog tested positive on a SNAP test… what does that mean?
Most veterinary hospitals routinely screen your dog for Lyme Disease and that is a good thing! The most commonly used in house
screening test is the 4dx SNAP test. This test detects C6 antibiotics but gives no quantitative number. A positive test indicates that tick with the Borrelia bacteria has been attached for at least 24 hours. In areas with lots of ticks and dogs that get to spend a fair amount of time outside there will be a high number who test positive at some point.
Next Steps?
If your dog tests positive you have options: 1 – do nothing, which I personally do not recommend; 2 – further testing, a quantitative C6 test (although there is dispute among veterinarians of its value); urine protein (as a screening of kidney damage); CBC, Chemistry profile to check for low platelets and organ function; 3 – treatment. Doxycycline has been shown to work effectively against the Lyme bacteria and treatment is typically four weeks. In an ideal world you do both steps 2 and 3. Your veterinarian will be able to help guide you through the decision making process and take into account your dog’s history and possible other health concerns.
How do I keep my dog from getting Lyme Disease?
Prevention, Vaccination, Environmental protection. Tick prevention is key in prevention. Here in North Carolina it is so important to treat your pet year round. Our “winter” is not cold enough or long enough to actually kill the tick population. And remember, not all tick preventions are equal in their effectiveness. Please ask your veterinarian what product is best for your dog. There are also effective vaccines against Lyme Disease. Your veterinarian can help you decide if vaccination is best for your dog. Studies have found that vaccinating positive dogs reduced the incidence of clinical signs by 60% compared to unvaccinated dogs and vaccinating negative dogs reduced the incidence of clinical signs by 85%, when compared to unvaccinated dogs.
FINAL THOUGHTS
This is definitely a disease that can be prevented, but can be challenging in tick infested areas. If your dog is unfortunate enough to develop kidney disease secondary to Lyme, the prognosis is grave. Because of this, I urge you to discuss options for prevention with your veterinarian and stay up-to-date on all problematic parasites at the Companion Animal Parasite Council website.

ready to go, my brother hit the road awhile ago. I don’t know why I’m still around. I’m cute as they come with my curly Shepherd tail and my Lab head and ears. I have a touch of white on my chest and that lanky Shepherd body. I’m the perfect combination of two awesome breeds. I’m smart, agile and love to play. I’m great with kids, housetrained and love other dogs. I walk well on a leash and have started my puppy training. I would benefit from someone completing my training. I have had all my appropriate vaccines, I’m spayed and microchipped. My adoption fee is $200.00.

Pumpkin was born in September of 2013. We don’t know how she wound up in a shelter pregnant and alone, but we rescued her three days before she gave birth to kittens. The kittens have all found homes and now it is Pumpkin’s turn! She is very sweet, loves to be petted and loves a catnip snake or mouse toy. We don’t think she’s a natural bobtail, but she Tailless Cat Rescue has the very round eyes and sweet purrsonality of one. She is very good with other cats, and seems to bond best with women. She would love to be your Valentine! She’s been wormed, treated for fleas, spayed, tested FeLV/FIV and heartworm negative, vaccinated, and microchipped. Pumpkin would be the perfect companion! Warren
is a handsome Poodle mix, maybe a MaltiPoo, who is 4 years old and 9.4 pounds. His owner had way too many dogs, mostly Poodle mixes, and she died, leaving the dogs alone in the house for nearly 3 months. Graham is a very sweet, totally unsocialized little guy who is frightened by everything. He is good with other dogs. He needs a new owner who is experienced with hoarder/breeder dogs, a family who has the patience to introduce this lovely, timid boy to the world. Fenced yard required, no small children. You must have a current sweet dog who can show Graham the ropes. Adoption donation $150.

Gordy,
Hudgins
a purebred Chinese Crested (powderpuff), was born July 2, 2011 and is 11 petite pounds of sweetness. Gordy is a friendly, active 5 year old who loves to take walks and is great on the leash. He already knows his basic commands such as sit and come and he likes to be obedient. He loves car rides. Gordy is affectionate and snuggly. He loves laps. He cherishes his people and thrives on praise, getting excited when he knows he has pleased you. He is good with other dogs but could also be your only dog. Adoption donation $175.
is a cute 7 year old, 20 pound boy who was found as a stray. He looks a lot like a Lhasa Poo to us and has the personality of a Lhasa. He seems to be non-shedding. He is a happy, sociable, playful, confident boy who makes new friends immediately. He loves being around people and is not a fan of being crated. Hudgins is such a confident dog that he can be tempted to be in charge if you let him, so he will be best in a home with an experienced owner. No small children in his new home since he can be a bit possessive over toys and can get irritated. He is a fun, cheerful little guy who will be fabulous in a new home with an alpha human. Luna
Well, we do not know if dogs come any sweeter than Hazel! She is a beautiful Aussie mix, about 5 years old and 39 pounds. She has a lovely, soft coat that is mostly a very deep, rich chocolate with pretty silvery highlights and lighter brown on her lower legs. Hazel is as kind and gentle as can be, a submissive girl who only wants to please. She is beautifully even tempered, humble and accepting. She looks to people for guidance and is totally cooperative. She is very affectionate and loves attention. She is house-trained and good with other dogs, too. Adoption donation $150.
is a 17 pound, 9 year old Rat Terrier mix who was found as a stray. She seems to have healthy joints and can spring up easily onto a chair or lap! She has a cute little old lady face but her body looks youthful and fit. She has a short tail. Luna acts like she has spent most of her life in a good home. She keeps her room clean and may be house-trained. She is cuddly and likes tummy rubs. Luna is submissive and friendly to new people but is frightened by little children so needs a child free home. She is fine with the other dogs but will be perfectly happy as your only dog. She loves to take walks. Adoption donation $100.

Jake
is a kind and gentle 13 year old Saddlebred/Quarter Horse cross that stands approximately 15hh. He was surrendered by his owners that could no longer afford to care for him. They knew Jake had sight problems and believed he was moon blind but when Jake was examined by our vet it was determined he is totally blind. He is now happily living in a paddock with a mini horse as a companion. We would love to see Jake and his companion (Malcolm also available through RDF) adopted together because they have bonded and are a great pair. The adoption fee for Jake will be waived in hopes of helping him find the perfect home. It is very rewarding to know this horse and sense what a gentle creature he is. Don’t let his blindness keep you from opening your barn to him! Visit www.reddogfarm.com. n
Cinnamon
is a very petite 2 year old female calico mix. They do not come much sweeter than this little girl! She came to us after her family moved leaving her abandoned. She was not spayed and had two litters of kittens at a young age which is why we think she may be so small. Luckily, the folks over at Piedmont Wildlife Rehab found her and gave her a warm place to stay until she could come to RDF to find her forever home! She is going to be spayed this week and have a tooth extraction but will be ready for her new family very soon. Cinnamon will be happiest as an indoor kitty but would be a great addition to almost any home. If you would like to adopt this lovely little girl, please visit us online at www.reddogfarm.com. n

Ruby,
named for her beautiful rubycolored eyes, is less than a year old. She came to us with her two babies, Mocha and Toffee (both are also now available for adoption too). Ruby is thin but has a good appetite. She enjoys lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, and strawberries. The babies love to run around the cage and “popcorn” with their mom. Guinea Pigs do best in pairs and Red Dog farm has over 18 available pigs in the program. Please visit www.reddogfarm.com for more information. n
Kevin Bacon
was found limping as a stray. He is now 2 years old and currently 80 lbs. and still growing. He loves belly rubs and is good around kids. Kevin is a very sweet pig who gets along great with other pigs. Potbellied pigs make great pets in the right environment, but quickly become unwanted when owners do not do their homework and have an appropriate home for pigs. Visit www.reddogfarm.com to learn more about pigs as pets and to read our policies regarding adopting potbellied pigs. n

Max is a happy-go-lucky kinda guy. He is very sweet! His previous owner abandoned him and a nice local vet tech found him and asked us to help find him a home! He does tend to be higher on the energy level scale. Max will need a family that has time to play with him and take him for walks. He does well with other dogs, children, and has also been OK with cats! Max is currently taking a training class with his foster mom to learn some more obedience commands and basic training techniques. Like all young dogs, Max will need someone patient and willing to show him how to be a well mannered dog. Visit www.reddogfarm.com to apply to adopt this happy boy today. n

SPCA OF THE TRIAD 336.375.3222 / www.triadspca.org
Meet Adidas.
Holly
He was adopted out as a kitten from another shelter and then brought to us because the owners could not keep him any longer. Adidas is a sweet kitty and loves to play and cuddle. He is about 5 months old. Morning times are for playing, afternoons are for napping. Adidas gets along with the other cats but is a little skittish with dogs. If exposed to them, he probably would get used to them. Adidas just needs that second chance to find his forever home.
was surrendered just before Christmas along with her mother, Sage. Holly is a young kitten born back in the spring or summer. Her owner had found homes for all the other kittens, but had decided to keep the mother, Sage, and her kitten, Holly. Now they are moving into an apartment where they cannot have the cats, so they asked the SPCA to find these felines homes. Sage and Holly are very bonded and love each other very much. It would be so nice if they could find a home together!

was adopted from us a couple years ago as a kitten. Due to unforeseen circumstances they had to bring him back. Now he is looking for his second chance at a fur-ever home. He has the cutest little mustache ever! Benjamin loves to be held and loved and would make someone a wonderful companion. Call SPCA of the Triad at 336-375-3222 for more information. n
Jack
is an 11 year old Beagle mix. He was abandoned at a vet by his owners because they did not want to care for him anymore. We were contacted and decided to take him into our rescue and find him a new home. He is a very calm, laid back dog that would like to just lay around and relax. Jack does not seem to have the patience for children. Do you think you might be the one to give this older gentleman a place to call home? Call SPCA of the Triad at 336-375-3222 for more information.

Lucky (TGRR #161144) is a 90-pound, seven year old purebred Golden who is eager to learn and to please. Lucky has lived his entire life outdoors on a chain and is ready to learn how to be an indoor family pet. While Lucky is easily corrected, he is a very strong boy in need of a family with a firm hand and plenty of time to devote to his training. He has been living with a dog training Triad Golden Retriever Rescue family who wholeheartedly believe his loving Golden nature will grow into a wonderful, well-behaved pet. He quickly mastered basic commands and just needs repetition and consistency to stay on track. Lucky would be happiest in a large, fenced in yard with another dog who isn’t too dominant. He is great with kids, especially older ones who wouldn’t have to worry about being knocked over by this big, slobbering lug. Long walks and exercise will be a must, as he is energetic and in need of dropping about 15 lbs. The time and patience any family puts into this beautiful boy will be rewarded ten-fold with his sweet disposition and desire to be close to his peeps. Miss Kitty.
Ophelia's
owner has two toddlers and a newborn and cannot keep her any longer. However, it is important that we find a good home for her. Ophelia is an indoor cat; she enjoys cuddling and sitting in someone’s lap. She has a sweet disposition and enjoys being petted. She has not had a lot of experience with children and is not a highly active cat. She does not usually climb or jump. Ophelia would do best with someone who is looking for an indoor cat who will give her love and affection and spend some quality time with her. She is healthy, up-to-date on shots, and spayed.
I’m a female tuxedo kitten born in the middle of the summer 2016. My foster mom found me living all alone in a vacant lot when I was very young but convinced me that people could be friends. Now I’m a growing girl and spend my time investigating things and playing with my cat toys. I like to get in a lap and take a good nap. Feel free to pay attention to me anytime. I am friendly with strange people and, although I live by myself, I have cat friends in my household that I spend time with. I am FIV/FeLV free and up-to-date on all vaccinations and am ready for a forever home

Meet Nana,
the little old lady of RCAS! Nana came in as a stray in December and instantly won the shelter staff over. This sweet girl is approximately 12 years old and a Shepherd mix with maybe some Chow or Akita. She walks great on a leash and is house-trained as far as we can tell. She loves her blankets and being talked to. You really couldn’t ask for a more low-key companion. Nana is heartworm negative and up-to-date on vaccinations. She will be microchipped upon adoption. Adoption fee is $75. Meet Nana today at the Rockingham County Animal Shelter! n
Bass.
As you can probably guess Bass loves to go fishing. If he could, he would spend every day out on the lake reeling them in. Bass is a 2 year old laid back, yet playful Bassett Hound/Plott Hound mix with a nice personality. He gets along great with other dogs and would love to go to a home that has another dog.
His adoption fee is $50. He will be neutered and microchipped upon adoption and is up-to-date on vaccinations. Come meet Bass today at the Rockingham County Animal Shelter! n
Jace.
Lady A

Lady A is a Retriever/ Terrier mix, roughly 1 year old and has been at the shelter since October 25. Her adoption fee is $25 and includes her spay, microchip, and upto-date vaccinations. Meet Lady A today at the Rockingham County Animal Shelter! n
Whiskey Tango is loud; Whiskey Tango is high-energy; Whiskey Tango is basically your typical hound dog. At approximately 2.5 years old, Whiskey Tango is still just a goofy puppy that needs someone to teach him manners .He would do best as a single dog with an owner that would let him get plenty of exercise. He is neutered, heartworm negative, microchipped, fully vaccinated and ready to go home. His adoption fee is $25. Meet Whiskey Tango today at the Rockingham County Animal Shelter! n
Sophie wants
One of the most playful kittens at RCAS happens to be Jace. He’s roughly 10 months old and loves entertaining the other cats with his silly antics. Jace also has an intellectual side. When he’s not being a jokester, he likes to study Greek and Roman mythology and teach it to all the new kittens that come to the shelter.
you to know she would make the purr-fect companion for Valentine’s Day or any other day of the year. This docile 1 year old domestic shorthair loves nothing more than curling up in your lap for a warm cat nap. Her other hobbies include bird watching and reading classic novels.
Jace’s adoption fee is $15 and incudes his neuter, microchip, and vaccinations. He’s ready to go home the day of his adoption. Meet Jace today at the Rockingham County Animal Shelter! n

Holiday & Toast. These two 1 year old dogs came to us from a home where they had lived together since pups. Their mom recently had surgery and could no longer give them the attention they needed. These are two very loving and sweet boys. Holiday sucks his blankie to go to sleep, is great at the dog park, and knows sit, come, no, sit, shake, down. So far he seems to be more at ease with women than men, but he warms up after a bit. Toast loves walks and is also great at the dog park. He knows Doberman Rescue to sit and shake on command and of the Triad especially likes to shake for treats. They can be walked together by one person. They feed off each other and each follows what the other one does. They’re both quite friendly and want to play with other dogs.

Three year old Jet has been a foster with Tarheel Weimaraner Rescue for several months. He has done well in a home with young children, but requires a lot of exercise and children that are dog savvy. Jet is a mix, which TWR does not typically get, but Jet won the lottery when he came to us! He loves to play and run. He still needs to work on leash walking but is working on basic manners in his foster home. Jet gets along with other dogs but has never met a cat.
If you are interested in meeting Jet, please go online for an application at: www.tarheelweimrescue.org. n
Spitfire was picked up as a stray by Guilford County Animal Control. She is super intelligent, very focused, and a quick learner, but due to the lack of guidance she has had, is a little socially awkward and in need of training. Spitfire is a working line dog and will only be placed with an experienced family. She loves toys and her people, is good with large dogs and older children, but has a very high prey drive so no cats, small dogs, or young children.

Hiya! I’m Jack (ID# 2439) and I am so excited to meet everyone! I am a young Labrador mix with plenty of energy and love to share. I love riding in cars and going on long drives. In fact, in my previous home, my dad and I drove across the United States in his big truck and I was the perfect passenger! I love children and other dogs of all ages and would love to have both in my new home! I get a little anxious when left alone or crated so having companions to keep me company would be fantastic! Are you looking for a sweet boy to travel with by day and snuggle with by night?
(ID# 2481) is incredibly energetic and will greet you at the door with a big hug! He is incredibly loving and doesn’t go to sleep until everyone is home because he wants to protect his loved ones. He is great to go on walks with and is very sociable with other dogs in the neighborhood. He is trained to relieve himself outdoors and doesn’t make a mess indoors. He loves to get back rubs but when you are tired of that, he will just curl up on his blanket and rest until you are ready to play again. Are you the loving forever home for this wonderful young boy?

R2.
Carra.
(ID#2458) Are you looking for a handsome boy with abounding energy and joy to greet you at the door when you come home from a long, stressful day? If so, look no further! My name is R2, but friends call me Raisin because I’m just so sweet! I am a Boxer/Labrador mix who loves to take long strolls or hike in a beautiful park. I so enjoy the outdoors and could use a little more leash training. I’m eager to learn if you’re eager to teach, especially if treats are involved! I enjoy spending time with my people, lounging on the couch after exercise. I’ll keep myself entertained while you’re out and about. I’m housebroken, upto-date on vaccines and ready to move in with you!
Ciao! My name is Carra (ID# 2430) and my foster family tells me that I am simply bellissima with my soft fur and calico colors. I am a shy girl that may take a bit to adjust to new surroundings but once I do, I love to play with toys and socialize, even with other cats. I also love receiving gentle pets and scratches from a favorite human so, per favore, keep that in mind! I like using my sweet voice to let you know my bowl needs to be filled, especially in the mattina when I’m ready for breakfast and I’m also litter box trained, spayed and up-to-date on vaccines. Si! I’m truly a catch! Carra in Italian means “beloved” and I certainly want to be...beloved by you!

Penelope
(ID# 2484). Are you looking for a dapper gentleman who always looks good in a tux? Well, then, look no further! I’m Tuxie and my name says it all! I’m a cuddly house cat with plenty of love to share, especially while sitting in your lap. I’m a smart cat who feels right at home with other felines and canines, once a slow and proper introduction has been made. I’m handsome and I know it, striking many grand poses for my beloved paparazzi. Are you up to the task of becoming my personal photographer? If so…apply here!
(ID# 2459). Just as Penelope was faithful to Odysseus in the Odyssey, I will be faithful to you! I am Penelope, hear me purrrrr! I love being around my people and will be so happy to see you when you come home from work that I will reward you with purring, hoping to entice you to pet and snuggle me. I definitely will want to be in the same room with you, basking in the warmth of the sun shining through a window or in my cat bed with my favorite mouse toy. I love to be brushed and play with toys on strings! Aren’t I an incredible goddess? Call the HSAC to find out more about me today!

CAMP BOW WOW A Cool Place to Be a Dog
M
eet Lucky and Luke Jackson. These two have been frequent campers at Camp Bow Wow® Greensboro for the last five years. Lucky and Luke have sniffed out every corner and played in every yard. They’ve made oodles of friends, both four-legged and two-legged, including every one of the Camp Bow Wow® Team Counselors. If these two dogs could talk, we’re sure they would say, “Yap! This is a cool place to be a dog!” Lucky and Luke, along with their parents, Adriana and Rusty Jackson, are now the proud owners of Camp Bow Wow® Greensboro. It’s a dog’s dream come true! Camp Bow Wow® is a national franchise, but all locations are independently owned and operated. Each location operates under strict guidelines, set after many years of experience from the various locations around the country. Since Camp Bow Wow® Greensboro is locally owned it is able to offer personalized services that small businesses are known to offer. The best of two worlds! On any given day, you will find owners Adriana and Rusty running around making sure that everything is just perfect for you and your Canine Camper.
BENEFITS
Camp Bow Wow® will provide regular exercise for your dog, helping him or her maintain a healthy weight. It will help to eliminate your dog’s boredom, separation anxiety or destructive behavior at home. After a long day of play, dogs become calmer and more focused. Your dog will benefit from being around other dogs and people, improving his socialization skills, as well as increasing his quality of life. Best of all, your Canine Camper will love, love, love coming to Camp Bow Wow® Greensboro! And parents love sending their dogs to Camp Bow Wow®. They feel confident knowing their dog is happier, healthier and well-cared for in a safe and secure environment. It is a great option for busy parents who have to leave their dogs alone at home.
Luke and Lucky
So, what does Camp Bow Wow® have to offer your dog? A safe place where your dog will love to romp and play. Camp Bow Wow® offers Dog Day Care, Dog Boarding and Dog Grooming. There are three large indoor and outdoor play areas monitored by Camp Bow Wow® Counselors and webcams, as well as a comfy lounge for older dogs that like to be lazy and a Tea Cup Room designed exclusively for smaller dogs.
